Locally Markov walks on finite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Locally Markov walks are natural generalizations of classical Markov chains, where instead of a particle moving independently of the past, it decides where to move next depending on the last action performed at the current location. We introduce the concept of locally Markov walks and we describe their stationary distribution and recurrent states, and we prove several properties such as irreducibility and ergodicity. For a particular locally Markov walk - the uniform unicycle walk on the complete graph - we investigate the mixing time and we prove that it exhibits cutoff.

Slit-slide-sew bijections for oriented planar maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct growth bijections for bipolar oriented planar maps and for Schnyder woods. These give direct combinatorial proofs of several counting identities for these objects. Our method mainly uses two ingredients. First, a slit-slide-sew operation, which consists in slightly sliding a map along a well-chosen path. Second, the study of the orbits of natural rerooting operations on the considered classes of oriented maps.

Følner, Banach, and translation density are equal and other new results about density in left amenable semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In any semigroup $S$ satisfying the Strong Folner Condition, there are three natural notions of density for a subset $A$ of $S$: Folner density $d(A)$, Banach density $d^*(A)$, and translation density $d_t(A)$. If $S$ is commutative or left cancellative, it is known that these three notions coincide. We shall show that these notions coincide for every semigroup $S$ which satisfies the Strong Folner Condition. Using this fact, we solve a problem that has been open for decades, showing that the set of ultrafilters every member of which has positive Folner density is a two sided ideal of $βS$. We also show that, if $S$ is a left amenable semigroup, then the set of ultrafilters every member of which has positive Banach density is a two sided ideal of $βS$. We investigate the density properties of subsets of $S$ in the case in which the minimal left ideals of the Stone-Čech compactification $βS$ are singletons. This occurs in many familiar examples, including all semilattices and all semigroups which have a right zero. We show that this is equivalent to the statement that $S$ satisfies the Strong Folner Condition and that, for every subset $A$ of $S$, $d(A)\in \{0,1\}$. We also examine the relation between the density properties of two semigroups when one is a quotient of the other. The Folner density of a subset of $S$ is always determined by some Folner net in $S$. We show that an arbitrary Folner net in $S$ determines the density of all of the subsets of $S$. And we prove that, if $S$ and $T$ are left amenable semigroups, then $d^*(A\times B)=d^*(A)d^*(B)$ for every subset $A$ of $S$ and every subset $B$ of $T$.

Estimates on the decay of the Laplace-Polya integral
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Laplace--Pólya integral, defined by $J_n(r) = \frac1π\int_{-\infty}^\infty \mathrm{sinc}^n t \cos(rt) \mathrm{d} \, t$, appears in several areas of mathematics. We study this quantity by combinatorial methods; accordingly, our investigation focuses on the values at integer $r$'s. Our main result establishes a lower bound for the ratio $\frac{J_n(r+2)}{J_n(r)}$ which extends and generalises the previous estimates of Lesieur and Nicolas, and provides a natural counterpart to the upper estimate established in our previous work. We derive the statement by purely combinatorial, elementary arguments. As a corollary, we deduce that no subdiagonal central sections of the unit cube are extremal, apart from the minimal, maximal, and the main diagonal sections. We also prove several consequences for Eulerian numbers.

A partial proof of the Brouwer's conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges and let $k$ be a natural number such that $k\leq n.$ Brouwer conjectured that the sum of the $k$ largest Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ is at most $m+{k+1 \choose 2}.$ In this paper we prove that this conjecture is true for simple $(m,n)$-graphs where $n\leq m\leq \frac{\sqrt{3}-1}{4}(n-1)n$ and $k\in \left[ \sqrt[3]{\frac{8m^{2}}{n-1}+4mn+n^{2}}, n\right].$ Moreover, we prove that the conjecture is true for all simple $(m,n)$-graphs where $k (\leq n)$ is a natural number from the interval $\left[\sqrt{2n-2m+2\sqrt{2m^{2}+mn(n-1)}},1+\frac{8m^{2}}{n^{2}(n-1)}+\frac{4m}{n}\right].$
Ramsey-like theorems for the Schreier barrier
Published • View Publication • BIB
The family of finite subsets $s$ of the natural numbers such that $|s|=1+\min s$ is known as the Schreier barrier in combinatorics and Banach Space theory, and as the family of exactly $ω$-large sets in Logic. We formulate and prove the generalizations of Friedman's Free Set and Thin Set theorems and of Rainbow Ramsey's theorem to colorings of the Schreier barrier. We analyze the strength of these theorems from the point of view of Computability Theory and Reverse Mathematics. Surprisingly, the exactly $ω$-large counterparts of the Thin Set and Free Set theorems can code $\emptyset^{(ω)}$, while the exactly $ω$-large Rainbow Ramsey theorem does not code the halting set.

Parabolic restrictions and double deformations of weight multiplicities
We introduce some (p,q)-deformations of the weight multiplicities for the representations of any simple Lie algebra g over the complex numbers. This is done by associating the indeterminate q to the positive roots of a parabolic subsystem of g and the indeterminate p to the remaining positive roots. When p=q, we just recover the usual Lusztig analogues of weight multiplicities. We then study the positivity of the coefficients in these double deformations. In particular, the positivity holds when p=1 in which case the polynomials have a natural algebraic interpretation in terms of a parabolic Brylinski filtration. For the parabolic restriction from type C to type A, this positivity result was conjectured by Lee. We also establish this positivity, in any finite type and for any p, for a stabilized version of our double deformation. In addition, we study the double deformation obtained by replacing the pair (p,q) by (p+1,q+1), show it has nonnegative coefficients and admits a combinatorial description in terms of crystals.

Random Turán Problems for $K_{s,t}$ Expansions
Let $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$ denote the $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained from the graph $K_{s,t}$ by inserting $r-2$ new vertices inside each edge of $K_{s,t}$. We prove essentially tight bounds on the size of a largest $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$-subgraph of the random $r$-uniform hypergraph $G_{n,p}^r$ whenever $r\ge 2s/3+2$, giving the first random Turán results for expansions that go beyond a natural "tight-tree barrier." In addition to this, our methods yield optimal supersaturation results for $K_{s,t}^{(3)}$ for sufficiently dense host hypergraphs, which may be of independent interest.
$q$-deformation of chromatic polynomials and graphical arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We first observe a mysterious similarity between the braid arrangement and the arrangement of all hyperplanes in a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. These two arrangements are defined by the determinants of the Vandermonde and the Moore matrix, respectively. These two matrices are transformed to each other by replacing a natural number $n$ with $q^n$ ($q$-deformation). In this paper, we introduce the notion of ``$q$-deformation of graphical arrangements'' as certain subarrangements of the arrangement of all hyperplanes over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This new class of arrangements extends the relationship between the Vandermonde and Moore matrices to graphical arrangements. We show that many invariants of the ``$q$-deformation'' behave as ``$q$-deformation'' of invariants of the graphical arrangements. Such invariants include the characteristic (chromatic) polynomial, the Stirling number of the second kind, freeness, exponents, basis of logarithmic vector fields, etc.

The maximum sturdiness of intersecting families
Given a family $\mathcal{F}\subset 2^{[n]}$ and $1\leq i\neq j\leq n$, we use $\mathcal{F}(\bar{i},j)$ to denote the family $\{F\setminus \{j\}\colon F\in \mathcal{F},\ F\cap \{i,j\}=\{j\}\}$. The sturdiness of $\mathcal{F}$ is defined as the minimum $|\mathcal{F}(\bar{i},j)|$ over all $i,j\in [n]$ with $i\neq j$. It has a very natural algebraic definition as well. In the present paper, we consider the maximum sturdiness of $k$-uniform intersecting families, $k$-uniform $t$-intersecting families and non-uniform $t$-intersecting families. One of the main results shows that for $n\geq 36(k+6)$, an intersecting family $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ has sturdiness at most $\binom{n-4}{k-3}$, which is best possible.

Monochromatic odd cycles in edge-coloured complete graphs
It is easy to see that every $q$-edge-colouring of the complete graph on $2^q+1$ vertices must contain a monochromatic odd cycle. A natural question raised by Erdős and Graham in $1973$ asks for the smallest $L(q)$ such that every $q$-edge-colouring of $K_{2^q+1}$ must contain a monochromatic odd cycle of length at most $L(q)$. In here, we show that $L(q)=O\left(\frac{2^q}{q^{1-o(1)}}\right)$ giving the first non-trivial upper bound on $L(q)$.

VC-dimensions Between Partially Ordered Sets and Totally Ordered Sets
Published in Order 43, 9 (2026) • View Publication • BIB
We say that two partial orders on $[n]$ are compatible if there exists a partial order that refines both of them. This compatibility relation induces a natural set system structure between the collection $\mathcal{F}$ of all partial orders and the collection $\mathcal{G}$ of all total orders on $[n]$, where each order is associated with the set of orders compatible with it. In this note, we determine the VC-dimension of $\mathcal{F}$ with respect to $\mathcal{G}$, proving that $\operatorname{VC}_{\mathcal{G}}(\mathcal{F}) = \lfloor\frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$ for $n \ge 4$. We also establish bounds on the dual VC-dimension, showing that $2(n-3) \le \operatorname{VC}_{\mathcal{F}}(\mathcal{G}) \le n \log_2 n$ for all $n \ge 1$.

Equivariant Ehrhart Theory of Hypersimplices
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e178 • View Publication • BIB
We study the hypersimplex under the action of the symmetric group $S_n$ by coordinate permutation. We prove that the evaluation of its equivariant $H^*$-polynomial at $1$ is the permutation character of decorated ordered set partitions under the natural action of $S_n$. This verifies a conjecture of Stapledon for the hypersimplex. To prove this result, we give a formula for the coefficients of the $H^*$-polynomial. Additionally, for the $(2,n)$-hypersimplex, we use this formula to show that trivial character need not appear as a direct summand of a coefficient of the $H^*$-polynomial, which gives a family of counterexamples to a different conjecture of Stapledon.

On primality and atomicity of numerical power monoids
In the first part of this paper, we establish a variation of a recent result by Bienvenu and Geroldinger on the (almost) non-existence of absolute irreducibles in (restricted) power monoids of numerical monoids: we argue the (almost) non-existence of primal elements in the same class of power monoids. The second part of this paper, devoted to the study of the atomic density of $\mathcal{P}_{\text{fin}, 0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$, is motivated by work of Shitov, a recent paper by Bienvenu and Geroldinger, and some questions pointed out by Geroldinger and Tringali. In the same, we study atomic density through the lens of the natural partition $\{ \mathcal{A}_{n,k} : k \in \mathbb{N}_0\}$ of $\mathcal{A}_n$, the set of atoms of $\mathcal{P}_{\text{fin}, 0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$ with maximum at most $n$: \[ \mathcal{A}_{n,k} = \{A \in \mathcal{A} : \max A \le n \text{ and } |A| = k\} \] for all $n,k \in \mathbb{N}$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is the set of atoms of $\mathcal{P}_{\text{fin}, 0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$. We pay special attention to the sequence $(α_{n,k})_{n,k \ge 1}$, where $α_{n,k}$ denote the size of the block $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}$. First, we establish some bounds and provide some asymptotic results for $(α_{n,k})_{n,k \ge 1}$. Then, we take some probabilistic approach to argue that, for each $n \in \mathbb{N}$, the sequence $(α_{n,k})_{k \ge 1}$ is almost unimodal. Finally, for each $n \in \mathbb{N}$, we consider the random variable $X_n : \mathcal{A}_n \to \mathbb{N}_0$ defined by the assignments $X_n : A \mapsto |A|$, whose probability mass function is $\mathbb{P}(X_n=k) = α_{n,k}/| \mathcal{A}_n|$. We conclude proving that, for each $m \in \mathbb{N}$, the sequence of moments $(\mathbb{E}(X_n^m))_{n \ge 1}$ behaves asymptotically as that of a sequence $(\mathbb{E}(Y_n^m))_{n \ge 1}$, where $Y_n$ is a binomially distributed random variable with parameters $n$ and $\frac12$.

Non-Archimedean GUE corners and Hecke modules
We compute the joint distribution of singular numbers for all principal corners of a $p$-adic Hermitian (resp. alternating) matrix with additive Haar distribution, the non-archimedean analogue of the GUE (resp. aGUE) corners process. In the alternating case we find that it is a Hall-Littlewood process, explaining -- and recovering as a corollary -- results of Fulman-Kaplan. In the Hermitian case we obtain a `marginal distribution' of a formal Hall-Littlewood process with both positive and negative transition `probabilities'. The proofs relate natural random matrix operations to structural results of Hironaka and Hironaka-Sato on modules over the spherical Hecke algebra, yielding other probabilistic statements of independent interest along the way.

Arrangements of small circles for Morse-Bott functions
As a topic of mathematics, "arrangements", systems of hyperplanes, circles, and general (regular) submanifolds, attract us strongly. We present a natural elementary study of arrangements of circles. It is also a kind of new studies. Our study is closely related to geometry and singularity theory of Morse(-Bott) functions. Regions surrounded by circles are regarded as images of real algebraic maps and composing them with projections gives Morse-Bott functions: this observation is natural, and surprisingly, recently presented first, by the author. We present a systematic way of constructing such arrangements by choosing small circles centered at existing circles inductively. We are interested in graphs the regions surrounded by the circles naturally collapse. We have studied local changes of the graphs in adding these circles. These graphs are essentially so-called {\it Reeb graphs} of the previous Morse-Bott functions: they are spaces of all components of preimages of single points for the functions.

Some ergodic theorems involving Omega function and their applications

In this paper, we build some ergodic theorems involving function $Ω$, where $Ω(n)$ denotes the number of prime factors of a natural number $n$ counted with multiplicities. As a combinatorial application, it is shown that for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$ and every $A\subset \mathbb{N}$ with positive upper Banach density, there are $a,d\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $$a,a+d,\ldots,a+kd,a+Ω(d)\in A.$$

Sparse graphs with an independent or foresty minimum vertex cut
Published • View Publication • BIB
A connected graph is called fragile if it contains an independent vertex cut. In 2002 Chen and Yu proved that every connected graph of order $n$ and size at most $2n-4$ is fragile, and in 2013 Le and Pfender characterized the non-fragile graphs of order $n$ and size $2n-3.$ It is natural to consider minimum vertex cuts. We prove two results. (1) Every connected graph of order $n$ with $n\ge 7$ and size at most $\lfloor 3n/2\rfloor$ has an independent minimum vertex cut; (2) every connected graph of order $n$ with $n\ge 7$ and size at most $2n$ has a foresty minimum vertex cut. Both results are best possible.

On high genus extensions of Negami's conjecture
Negami's famous planar cover conjecture is equivalent to the statement that a connected graph can be embedded in the projective plane if and only if it has a projective planar cover. In 1999, Hliněný proposed extending this conjecture to higher genus non-orientable surfaces. In this paper, we put forward a natural extension that encompasses orientable surfaces as well; for every compact surface $Σ$, a connected graph $G$ has a finite cover embeddable in $Σ$ if and only if $G$ is embeddable in a surface covered by $Σ$. As evidence toward this, we prove that for every surface $Σ$, the connected graphs with a finite cover embeddable in $Σ$ have bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we show that these extensions of Negami's conjecture are decidable for every compact surface of sufficiently large Euler genus, surpassing what is known for Negami's original conjecture. We also prove the natural analogue for countable graphs embeddable into a compact (orientable) surface. More precisely, we prove that a connected countable graph $G$ has a finite ply cover that embeds into a compact (orientable) surface if and only if $G$ embeds into a compact (orientable) surface. Our most general theorem, from which these results are derived, is that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every surface $Σ$, there exists a decreasing function $p_Σ:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\lim_{g\to \infty}p_Σ(g) =0$ such that every finite cover embeddable in $Σ$ of any connected graph with Euler genus $g\ge c$ has ply at most $p_Σ(g)$.

On z-Superstable and Critical Configurations of Chip Firing Pairs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that there is a duality map between the superstable configurations and the critical configurations of a graph. This was extended to all M-matrices in (Guzmàn-Klivans 2015). We show a natural way to extend this to all $(L,M)$-chip firing pairs introduced in (Guzmàn-Klivans 2016). In addition, we study various properties of this map.
