Monochromatic cycle partitions in random graphs
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 136-152 • View PublicationBIB
Erdős, Gyárfás and Pyber showed that every $r$-edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$ can be covered by $25 r^2 \log r$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles (independent of $n$). Here, we extend their result to the setting of binomial random graphs. That is, we show that if $p = p(n) = Ω(n^{-1/(2r)})$, then with high probability any $r$-edge-coloured $G(n,p)$ can be covered by at most $1000 r^4 \log r $ vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles. This answers a question of Korándi, Mousset, Nenadov, Škorić and Sudakov.

Digit sums and generating functions
Published in The Ramanujan Journal (2020): 1-12 • View PublicationBIB
We connect a primitive operation from arithmetic -- summing the digits of a base-$B$ integer -- to $q$-series and product generating functions analogous to those in partition theory. We find digit sum generating functions to be intertwined with distinctive classes of "$B$-ary" Lambert series, which themselves enjoy nice transformations. We also consider digit sum Dirichlet series.

The rational homology group of the order complex of non-even partitions of a finite set is calculated. A twisted version of the Goresky-MacPherson approach to similar homology calculations is proposed.

Mixed partition functions and exponentially bounded edge-connection rank
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study graph parameters whose associated edge-connection matrices have exponentially bounded rank growth. Our main result is an explicit construction of a large class of graph parameters with this property that we call mixed partition functions. Mixed partition functions can be seen as a generalization of partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227] and they are related to invariant theory of orthosymplectic supergroup. We moreover show that evaluations of the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph are examples of mixed partition functions, answering a question of de la Harpe and Jones.
Three local actions in $6$-valent arc-transitive graphs
It is known that there are precisely three transitive permutation groups of degree $6$ that admit an invariant partition with three parts of size $2$ such that the kernel of the action on the parts has order $4$; these groups are called $A_4(6)$, $S_4(6d)$ and $S_4(6c)$. For each $L\in \{A_4(6), S_4(6d), S_4(6c)\}$, we construct an infinite family of finite connected $6$-valent graphs $\{Γ_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ and arc-transitive groups $G_n \le \rm{Aut}(Γ_n)$ such that the permutation group induced by the action of the vertex-stabiliser $(G_n)_v$ on the neighbourhood of a vertex $v$ is permutation isomorphic to $L$, and such that $|(G_n)_v|$ is exponential in $|\rm{V}(Γ_n)|$. These three groups were the only transitive permutation groups of degree at most $7$ for which the existence of such a family was undecided. In the process, we construct an infinite family of cubic $2$-arc-transitive graphs such that the dimension of the $1$-eigenspace over the field of order $2$ of the adjacency matrix of the graph grows linearly with the order of the graph.

Attacks and alignments: rooks, set partitions, and permutations
We consider uniformly random set partitions of size $n$ with exactly $k$ blocks, and uniformly random permutations of size $n$ with exactly $k$ cycles, under the regime where $n-k \sim t\sqrt{n}$, $t>0$. In this regime, there is a simple approximation for the entire process of component counts; in particular, the number of components of size 3 converges in distribution to Poisson with mean $\frac{2}{3}t^2$ for set partitions and mean $\frac{4}{3}t^2$ for permutations, and with high probability all other components have size one or two. These approximations are proved, with preasymptotic error bounds, using combinatorial bijections for placements of $r$ rooks on a triangular half of an $n\times n$ chess board, together with the Chen--Stein method for processes of indicator random variables.

Linear relations on LLT polynomials and their k-Schur positivity for k=2
Published • View PublicationBIB
LLT polynomials are $q$-analogues of product of Schur functions that are known to be Schur-positive by Grojnowski and Haiman. However, there is no known combinatorial formula for the coefficients in the Schur expansion. Finding such a formula also provides Schur positivity of Macdonald polynomials. On the other hand, Haiman and Hugland conjectured that LLT polynomials for skew partitions lying on $k$ adjacent diagonals are $k$-Schur positive, which is much stronger than Schur positivity. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for $k=2$ by analyzing unicellular LLT polynomials. We first present a linearity theorem for unicellular LLT polynomials for $k=2$. By analyzing linear relations between LLT polynomials with known results on LLT polynomials for rectangles, we provide the $2$-Schur positivity of the unicellular LLT polynomials as well as LLT polynomials appearing in Haiman-Hugland conjecture for $k=2$.

The Hopf algebra of integer binary relations
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Resurgence, Moulds and Applications (CARMA), European Mathematical Society Publishing House, pp.299-344, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a Hopf algebra on integer binary relations that contains under the same roof several well-known Hopf algebras related to the permutahedra and the associahedra: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra on permutations, the Loday-Ronco algebra on planar binary trees, and the Chapoton algebras on ordered partitions and on Schröder trees. We also derive from our construction new Hopf structures on intervals of the weak order on permutations and of the Tamari order on binary trees.

$P$-Partition Generating Function Equivalence of Naturally Labeled Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $P$-partition generating function of a (naturally labeled) poset $P$ is a quasisymmetric function enumerating order-preserving maps from $P$ to $\mathbb{Z}^+$. Using the Hopf algebra of posets, we give necessary conditions for two posets to have the same generating function. In particular, we show that they must have the same number of antichains of each size, as well as the same shape (as defined by Greene). We also discuss which shapes guarantee uniqueness of the $P$-partition generating function and give a method of constructing pairs of non-isomorphic posets with the same generating function.

Vertex partition of hypergraphs and maximum degenerate subhypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2007 Matamala proved that if $G$ is a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$ not containing $K_{Δ+1}$ as a subgraph and $s, t$ are positive integers such that $s+t \geq Δ$, then the vertex set of $G$ admits a partition $(S,T)$ such that $G[S]$ is a maximum order $(s-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$ and $G[T]$ is a $(t-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$. This result extended earlier results obtained by Borodin, by Bollobás and Manvel, by Catlin, by Gerencsér and by Catlin and Lai. In this paper we prove a hypergraph version of this result and extend it to variable degeneracy and to partitions into more than two parts, thereby extending a result by Borodin, Kostochka, and Toft.

$P$-partitions and $p$-positivity
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2021, Issue 14, July 2021, Pages 10848-10907 • View PublicationBIB
Using the combinatorics of $α$-unimodal sets, we establish two new results in the theory of quasisymmetric functions. First, we obtain the expansion of the fundamental basis into quasisymmetric power sums. Secondly, we prove that generating functions of reverse $P$-partitions expand positively into quasisymmetric power sums. Consequently any nonnegative linear combination of such functions is $p$-positive whenever it is symmetric. As an application we derive positivity results for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, unicellular and vertical strip LLT polynomials, multivariate Tutte polynomials and the more general $B$-polynomials, matroid quasisymmetric functions, and certain Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, thus reproving and improving on numerous results in the literature.

Elementary proof of congruences modulo 25 for broken $k$-diamond partitions
Let $Δ_{k}(n)$ denote the number of $k$-broken diamond partitions of $n$. Quite recently, the second author proved an infinite family of congruences modulo 25 for $Δ_{k}(n)$ with the help of modular forms. In this paper, we aim to provide an elementary proof of this result.

Searching for dense subsets in a graph via the partition function
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$, we define its density $0 \leq σ(S) \leq 1$ as the ratio of the number of edges of $G$ spanned by the vertices of $S$ to ${|S| \choose 2}$. We show that, given a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and an integer $m$, the partition function $\sum_S \exp\{ γm σ(S) \}$, where the sum is taken over all $m$-subsets $S$ of vertices and $0 < γ<1$ is fixed in advance, can be approximated within relative error $0 < ε< 1$ in quasi-polynomial $n^{O(\ln m - \ln ε)}$ time. We discuss numerical experiments and observe that for the random graph $G(n, 1/2)$ one can afford a much larger $γ$, provided the ratio $n/m$ is sufficiently large.
A Geometric Interpretation of the Intertwining Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a connection between two statistics on set partitions, the intertwining number and the depth-index. In particular, results link the intertwining number to the algebraic geometry of Borel orbits. Furthermore, by studying the generating polynomials of our statistics, we determine the $q=-1$ specialization of a $q$-analogue of the Bell numbers. Finally, by using Renner's $H$-polynomial of an algebraic monoid, we introduce and study a $t$-analog of $q$-Stirling numbers.

Approximation Algorithms for Complex-Valued Ising Models on Bounded Degree Graphs
Published in Quantum 3, 162 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of approximating the Ising model partition function with complex parameters on bounded degree graphs. We establish a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function when the interactions and external fields are absolutely bounded close to zero. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of Ising models the partition function does not vanish. Our algorithm is based on an approach due to Barvinok for approximating evaluations of a polynomial based on the location of the complex zeros and a technique due to Patel and Regts for efficiently computing the leading coefficients of graph polynomials on bounded degree graphs. Finally, we show how our algorithm can be extended to approximate certain output probability amplitudes of quantum circuits.

Inhomogeneous Partition Regularity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that the system of equations $Ax=b$, where $A$ is an integer matrix and $b$ is a (non-zero) integer vector, is partition regular if whenever the integers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector $x$ with $Ax=b$. Rado proved that the system $Ax=b$ is partition regular if and only if it has a constant solution. Byszewski and Krawczyk asked if this remains true when the integers are replaced by a general ring $R$. Our aim in this note is to answer this question in the affirmative. The main ingredient is a new `direct' proof of Rado's result.
Neighbor-Locating Colorings in Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a $k$-partition $Π=\{S_1,\ldots,S_k\}$ of $V(G)$ into independent sets, called \emph{colors}. A $k$-coloring is called \emph{neighbor-locating} if for every pair of vertices $u,v$ belonging to the same color $S_i$, the set of colors of the neighborhood of $u$ is different from the set of colors of the neighborhood of $v$. The neighbor-locating chromatic number $χ_{_{NL}}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a neighbor-locating coloring of $G$. We establish some tight bounds for the neighbor-locating chromatic number of a graph, in terms of its order, maximum degree and independence number. We determine all connected graphs of order $n\geq 5$ with neighbor-locating chromatic number $n$ or $n-1$. We examine the neighbor-locating chromatic number for two graph operations: join and disjoint union, and also for two graph families: split graphs and Mycielski graphs.

Algorithmic Pirogov-Sinai theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop an efficient algorithmic approach for approximate counting and sampling in the low-temperature regime of a broad class of statistical physics models on finite subsets of the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$ and on the torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$. Our approach is based on combining contour representations from Pirogov-Sinai theory with Barvinok's approach to approximate counting using truncated Taylor series. Some consequences of our main results include an FPTAS for approximating the partition function of the hard-core model at sufficiently high fugacity on subsets of $\mathbb Z^d$ with appropriate boundary conditions and an efficient sampling algorithm for the ferromagnetic Potts model on the discrete torus $(\mathbb Z/n \mathbb Z)^d$ at sufficiently low temperature.

Product matrix processes as limits of random plane partitions
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We consider a random process with discrete time formed by singular values of products of truncations of Haar distributed unitary matrices. We show that this process can be understood as a scaling limit of the Schur process, which gives determinantal formulas for (dynamical) correlation functions and a contour integral representation for the correlation kernel. The relation with the Schur processes implies that the continuous limit of marginals for q-distributed plane partitions coincides with the joint law of singular values for products of truncations of Haar-distributed random unitary matrices. We provide structural reasons for this coincidence that may also extend to other classes of random matrices.

Product irregularity strength of graphs with small clique cover number
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $X$ without isolated vertices and without isolated edges, a product-irregular labelling $ω:E(X)\rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,s\}$, first defined by Anholcer in 2009, is a labelling of the edges of $X$ such that for any two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $X$ the product of labels of the edges incident with $u$ is different from the product of labels of the edges incident with $v$. The minimal $s$ for which there exist a product irregular labeling is called the product irregularity strength of $X$ and is denoted by $ps(X)$. Clique cover number of a graph is the minimum number of cliques that partition its vertex-set. In this paper we prove that connected graphs with clique cover number $2$ or $3$ have the product-irregularity strength equal to $3$, with some small exceptions.
