Congruences modulo powers of 3 for 2-color partition triples
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $p_{k,3}(n)$ enumerate the number of 2-color partition triples of $n$ where one of the colors appears only in parts that are multiples of $k$. In this paper, we prove several infinite families of congruences modulo powers of 3 for $p_{k,3}(n)$ with $k=1, 3$, and $9$. For example, for all integers $n\geq0$ and $α\geq1$, we prove that \begin{align*} p_{3,3}\left(3^αn+\dfrac{3^α+1}{2}\right) &\equiv0\pmod{3^{α+1}} \end{align*} and \begin{align*} p_{3,3}\left(3^{α+1}n+\dfrac{5\times3^α+1}{2}\right) &\equiv0\pmod{3^{α+4}}. \end{align*}

Dungeons and Dragons: Combinatorics for the $dP_3$ Quiver
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we utilize the machinery of cluster algebras, quiver mutations, and brane tilings to study a variety of historical enumerative combinatorics questions all under one roof. Previous work [Zha, LMNT14], which arose during the second author's monitorship of undergraduates, and more recently of both authors [LM17], analyzed the cluster algebra associated to the cone over $\mathbf{dP_3}$, the del Pezzo surface of degree $6$ ($\mathbb{CP}^2$ blown up at three points). By investigating sequences of toric mutations, those occurring only at vertices with two incoming and two outgoing arrows, in this cluster algebra, we obtained a family of cluster variables that could be parameterized by $\mathbb{Z}^3$ and whose Laurent expansions had elegant combinatorial interpretations in terms of dimer partition functions (in most cases). While the earlier work [Zha, LMNT14, LM17] focused exclusively on one possible initial seed for this cluster algebra, there are in total four relevant initial seeds (up to graph isomorphism). In the current work, we explore the combinatorics of the Laurent expansions from these other initial seeds and how this allows us to relate enumerations of perfect matchings on Dungeons to Dragons.

Counting partitions inside a rectangle
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the number of partitions of $n$ whose Young diagrams fit inside an $m \times \ell$ rectangle; equivalently, we study the coefficients of the $q$-binomial coefficient $\binom{m+\ell}{m}_q$. We obtain sharp asymptotics throughout the regime $\ell = Θ(m)$ and $n = Θ(m^2)$. Previously, sharp asymptotics were derived by Takács only in the regime where $|n - \ell m /2| = O(\sqrt{\ell m (\ell + m)})$ using a local central limit theorem. Our approach is to solve a related large deviation problem: we describe the tilted measure that produces configurations whose bounding rectangle has the given aspect ratio and is filled to the given proportion. Our results are sufficiently sharp to yield the first asymptotic estimates on the consecutive differences of these numbers when $n$ is increased by one and $m, \ell$ remain the same, hence significantly refining Sylvester's unimodality theorem.

Number of Vertices of the Polytope of Integer Partitions and Factorization of the Partitioned Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
The polytope of integer partitions of $n$ is the convex hull of the corresponding $n$-dimensional integer points. Its vertices are of importance because every partition is their convex combination. Computation shows intriguing features of $v(n),$ the number of the polytope vertices: its graph has a saw-toothed shape with the highest peaks at prime $n$'s. We explain the shape of $v(n)$ by the large number of partitions of even $n$'s that were counted by N. Metropolis and P. R. Stein. These partitions are convex combinations of two others. We reveal that divisibility of $n$ by 3 also reduces the value of $v(n),$ which is caused by partitions that are convex combinations of three but not two others, and characterize convex representations of such integer points in arbitrary integral polytope. To approach the prime $n$ phenomenon, we use a specific classification of integers and demonstrate that the graph of $v(n)$ is stratified to layers corresponding to resulting classes. Our main conjecture claims that $v(n)$ depends on collections of divisors of $n.$ We also offer an initial argument for that the number of vertices of the Gomory's master corner polyhedron on the cyclic group has features similar to those of $v(n).$

Periodicity of Grover walks on distance-regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Characterizations graphs of some classes to induce periodic Grover walks have been studied for recent years. In particular, for the strongly regular graphs, it has been known that there are only three kinds of such graphs. Here, we focus on the periodicity of the Grover walks on distance-regular graphs. The distance-regular graph can be regarded as a kind of generalization of the strongly regular graphs and the typical graph with an equitable partition. In this paper, we find some classes of such distance-regular graphs and obtain some useful necessary conditions to induce periodic Grover walks on the general distance-regular graphs. Also, we apply this necessary condition to give another proof for the strong regular graphs.

Universality of vector sequences and universality of Tverberg partitions
A result of Rosenthal says that for every $q>1$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$ there is $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every sequence of $N$ distinct positive numbers contains, after a suitable translation and possible multiplication by $-1$, a subsequence $a_1,\ldots,a_n$ that is either $q$-increasing (that is, $a_{i+1}>qa_i$ for all $i$) or $1/q$-decreasing ($a_{i+1}<a_i/q$ for all $i$). One of our main theorems extends this result to vector sequences. This theorem is then used to prove the universality theorem for Tverberg partitions which says that, for every $d$ and $r$, every long enough sequence of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in general position contains a subsequence of length $n$ whose Tverberg partitions are exactly the so called rainbow partitions.

Combinatorial Structures in Random Matrix Theory Predictions for $L$-Functions
Our results can be viewed as applications of algebraic combinatorics in random matrix theory. These applications are motivated by the predictive power of random matrix theory for the statistical behavior of the celebrated Riemann $ζ$-function (and $L$-functions in general), which was discovered by Montgomery (with regard to zeros of $L$-functions) and by Keating and Snaith (with regard to values of $L$-functions). The first results revolve around a new operation on partitions, which we call overlap. We prove two overlap identities for so-called Littlewood-Schur functions. The first overlap identity represents the Littlewood-Schur function $LS _λ(X; Y)$ as a sum over subsets of $X$, while the second overlap identity essentially represents $LS_λ(X; Y)$ as a sum over pairs of partitions whose overlap equals $λ$. Both identities are derived by applying Laplace expansion to a determinantal formula for Littlewood-Schur functions due to Moens and Van der Jeugt. In addition, we give two visual characterizations for the set of all pairs of partitions whose overlap is equal to a partition $λ$. The second result is an asymptotic formula for averages of mixed ratios of characteristic polynomials over the unitary group, where mixed ratios are products of ratios and/or logarithmic derivatives. Our proof of this formula is a generalization of Bump and Gamburd's elegant combinatorial proof of Conrey, Forrester and Snaith's formula for averages of ratios of characteristic polynomials over the unitary group. The generalization relies on three combinatorial results, namely the first overlap identity, a new variant of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule and an idea from vertex operator formalism. We conclude this thesis by explaining how this approach might lead to new number theoretic proofs.

Overlap Identities for Littlewood-Schur Functions
Our results revolve around a new operation on partitions, which we call overlap. We prove two overlap identities for so-called Littlewood-Schur functions. Littlewood-Schur functions are a generalization of Schur functions, whose study was introduced by Littlewood. More concretely, the Littlewood-Schur function $LS_λ(X; Y)$ indexed by the partition $λ$ is a polynomial in the variables $X \cup Y$ that is symmetric in both $X$ and $Y$ separately. The first overlap identity represents $LS _λ(X; Y)$ as a sum over subsets of $X$, while the second overlap identity essentially represents $LS_λ(X; Y)$ as a sum over pairs of partitions whose overlap equals $λ$. Both identities are derived by applying Laplace expansion to a determinantal formula for Littlewood-Schur functions due to Moens and Van der Jeugt. In addition, we give two visual characterizations for the set of all pairs of partitions whose overlap is equal to a partition $λ$.

Some inequalities for Garvan's bicrank function of 2-colored partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In order to provide a unified combinatorial interpretation of congruences modulo $5$ for 2-colored partition functions, Garvan introduced a bicrank statistic in terms of weighted vector partitions. In this paper, we obtain some inequalities between the bicrank counts $M^{*}(r,m,n)$ for $m=2$, $3$ and $4$ via their asymptotic formulas and some $q$-series techniques. These inequalities are parallel to Andrews and Lewis' results on the rank and crank counts for ordinary partitions.

A generalized Hardy-Ramanujan formula for the number of restricted integer partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive the asymptotic formula for $p_n(N,M)$, the number of partitions of integer $n$ with part size at most $N$ and length at most $M$. We consider both $N$ and $M$ are comparable to $\sqrt{n}$. This is an extension of the classical Hardy-Ramanujan formula and Szekeres' formula. The proof relies on the saddle point method.

A bound on judicious bipartitions of directed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Judicious partitioning problems on graphs ask for partitions that bound several quantities simultaneously, which have received a lot of attentions lately. Scott asked the following natural question: What is the maximum constant $c_d$ such that every directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs and minimum outdegree $d$ admits a bipartition $V(D)= V_1\cup V_2$ satisfying $\min\{e(V_1, V_2), e(V_2, V_1)\}\ge c_d m$? Here, for $i=1,2$, $e(V_{i},V_{3-i})$ denotes the number of arcs in $D$ from $V_{i}$ to $V_{3-i}$. Lee, Loh, and Sudakov %[Judicious partitions of directed graphs, Random Struct. Alg. 48 %(2016) 147--170] conjectured that every directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs and minimum outdegree at least $d\ge 2$ admits a bipartition $V(D)=V_1\cup V_2$ such that \[ \min\{e(V_1,V_2),e(V_2,V_1)\}\geq \Big(\frac{d-1}{2(2d-1)}+ o(1)\Big)m. \] %While it is not known whether or not the minimum outdegree condition %alone is sufficient, w We show that this conjecture holds under the additional natural condition that the minimum indegree is also at least $d$.

Ramsey Numbers of Interval 2-chromatic Ordered Graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2019) • View PublicationBIB
An ordered graph $G$ is a graph together with a specified linear ordering on the vertices, and its interval chromatic number is the minimum number of independent sets consisting of consecutive vertices that are needed to partition the vertex set. The $t$-color Ramsey number $R_t(G)$ of an ordered graph $G$ is the minimum number of vertices of an ordered complete graph such that every edge-coloring from a set of $t$ colors contains a monochromatic copy of $G$ such that the copy of $G$ preserves the original ordering on $G$. An ordered graph is $k$-ichromatic if it has interval chromatic number $k$. We obtain lower bounds linear in the number of vertices for the Ramsey numbers of certain classes of 2-ichromatic ordered graphs. We also determine the exact value of the $t$-color Ramsey number for two families of 2-ichromatic ordered graphs, and we prove a linear upper bound for a class of 2-ichromatic ordered graphs.

Biased partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^n$

Given a function $f$ on the vertex set of some graph $G$, a scenery, let a simple random walk run over the graph and produce a sequence of values. Is it possible to, with high probability, reconstruct the scenery $f$ from this random sequence? To show this is impossible for some graphs, Gross and Grupel, call a function $f:V\to\{0,1\}$ on the vertex set of a graph $G=(V,E)$ $p$-biased if for each vertex $v$ the fraction of neighbours on which $f$ is 1 is exactly $p$. Clearly, two $p$-biased functions are indistinguishable based on their sceneries. Gross and Grupel construct $p$-biased functions on the hypercube $\{0,1\}^n$ and ask for what $p\in[0,1]$ there exist $p$-biased functions on $\mathbb{Z}^n$ and additionally how many there are. We fully answer this question by giving a complete characterization of these values of $p$. We show that $p$-biased functions exist for all $p=c/2n$ with $c\in\{0,\dots,2n\}$ and, in fact, there are uncountably many of them for every $c\in\{1,\dots,2n-1\}$. To this end, we construct uncountably many partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ into $2n$ parts such that every element of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ has exactly one neighbour in each part. This additionally shows that not all sceneries on $\mathbb{Z}^n$ can be reconstructed from a sequence of values on attained on a simple random walk.

On the $k$-partition dimension of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
As a generalization of the concept of the partition dimension of a graph, this article introduces the notion of the $k$-partition dimension. Given a nontrivial connected graph $G=(V,E)$, a partition $Π$ of $V$ is said to be a $k$-partition generator for $G$ if any pair of different vertices $u,v\in V$ is distinguished by at least $k$ vertex sets of $Π$, \emph{i.e}., there exist at least $k$ vertex sets $S_1,\ldots,S_k\inΠ$ such that $d(u,S_i)\ne d(v,S_i)$ for every $i\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. A $k$-partition generator for $G$ with minimum cardinality among all their $k$-partition generators is called a $k$-partition basis of $G$ and its cardinality the $k$-partition dimension of $G$. A nontrivial connected graph $G$ is $k$-partition dimensional if $k$ is the largest integer such that $G$ has a $k$-partition basis. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be $r$-partition dimensional and we obtain several results on the $k$-partition dimension for $k\in\{1,\ldots,r\}$.

The number of independent sets in an irregular graph
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 138 (2019), 172--195 • View PublicationBIB
Settling Kahn's conjecture (2001), we prove the following upper bound on the number $i(G)$ of independent sets in a graph $G$ without isolated vertices: \[ i(G) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} i(K_{d_u,d_v})^{1/(d_u d_v)}, \] where $d_u$ is the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. Equality occurs when $G$ is a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs. The inequality was previously proved for regular graphs by Kahn and Zhao. We also prove an analogous tight lower bound: \[ i(G) \ge \prod_{v \in V(G)} i(K_{d_v+1})^{1/(d_v + 1)}, \] where equality occurs for $G$ a disjoint union of cliques. More generally, we prove bounds on the weighted versions of these quantities, i.e., the independent set polynomial, or equivalently the partition function of the hard-core model with a given fugacity on a graph.

Asymptotic results for Representation Theory
Representation theory of finite groups portrays a marvelous crossroad of group theory, algebraic combinatorics, and probability. In particular the Plancherel measure is a probability that arises naturally from representation theory, and in this thesis we consider three ramifications of asymptotic questions for random Plancherel distributed representations. First we recall irreducible characters of the symmetric group, which are indexed by integer partitions. We focus on the so called 'dual approach', in which the partition indexing a character is now considered to be the variable. We extend a famous result of Kerov on the asymptotic of Plancherel distributed characters by studying partial trace and partial sum of a representation matrix. We decompose each of these objects into a main term and a remainder, and in each case we prove a central limit theorem for the main term. We apply these results to prove a law of large numbers for the partial sum. In the second part we consider projective representations of the symmetric group by converting a multirectangular approach developed by Stanley for the classical case. In particular, we present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the renormalized projective character, written as a polynomial in a new set of coordinates. We prove the positivity for the leading term of the polynomial. In the last part of the thesis we recall the theory of supercharacters, which is an alternative tool to representation theory when the classical approach proves to be intractable. We show that a generalization of the Plancherel measure, called the superplancherel measure, arises naturally. We focus on a particular supercharacter theory for the upper unitriangular group in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions. We prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution.

Characterizing and decomposing classes of threshold, split, and bipartite graphs via 1-Sperner hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A hypergraph is said to be $1$-Sperner if for every two hyperedges the smallest of their two set differences is of size one. We present several applications of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs and their structure to graphs. In particular, we consider the classical characterizations of threshold and domishold graphs and use them to obtain further characterizations of these classes in terms of $1$-Spernerness, thresholdness, and $2$-asummability of their vertex cover, clique, dominating set, and closed neighborhood hypergraphs. Furthermore, we apply a decomposition property of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs to derive decomposition theorems for two classes of split graphs, a class of bipartite graphs, and a class of cobipartite graphs. These decomposition theorems are based on certain matrix partitions of the corresponding graphs, giving rise to new classes of graphs of bounded clique-width and new polynomially solvable cases of several domination problems.

Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra and root systems, II
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory, 23, no.4 (2020), 1487-1498 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a simple Lie algebra with a Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak b$ and $\mathfrak{Ab}$ the set of abelian ideals of $\mathfrak b$. Let $Δ^+$ be the corresponding set of positive roots. We continue our study of combinatorial properties of the partition of $\mathfrak{Ab}$ parameterised by the long positive roots. In particular, the union of an arbitrary set of maximal abelian ideals is described, if $\mathfrak g\ne\mathfrak{sl}_n$. We also characterise the greatest lower bound of two positive roots, when it exists, and point out interesting subposets of $Δ^+$ that are modular lattices.

An efficient algorithm to test forcibly-biconnectedness of graphical degree sequences
We present an algorithm to test whether a given graphical degree sequence is forcibly biconnected or not and prove its correctness. The worst case run time complexity of the algorithm is shown to be exponential but still much better than the previous basic algorithm presented in \cite{Wang2018}. We show through experimental evaluations that the algorithm is efficient on average. We also adapt Ruskey et al's classic algorithm to enumerate zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$ and Barnes and Savage's classic algorithm to enumerate graphical partitions of an even integer $n$ by incorporating our testing algorithm into theirs and then obtain some enumerative results about forcibly biconnected graphical degree sequences of given length $n$ and forcibly biconnected graphical partitions of given even integer $n$. Based on these enumerative results we make some conjectures such as: when $n$ is large, (1) the proportion of forcibly biconnected graphical degree sequences of length $n$ among all zero-free graphical degree sequences of length $n$ is asymptotically a constant between 0 and 1; (2) the proportion of forcibly biconnected graphical partitions of even $n$ among all forcibly connected graphical partitions of $n$ is asymptotically 0.
