Asymptotics for the number of standard tableaux of skew shape and for weighted lozenge tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove and generalize a conjecture in arXiv:1610.0474(4) about the asymptotics of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n!}} f^{λ/μ}$, where $f^{λ/μ}$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$ which have stable limit shape under the $1/\sqrt{n}$ scaling. The proof is based on the variational principle on the partition function of certain weighted lozenge tilings.

Characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals and signed graphs of classical root systems
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 79 (2019), 179-192 • View PublicationBIB
With a main tool is signed graphs, we give a full description of the characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals of classical root systems ($ABCD$) with respect to the integer and root lattices. As a result, we obtain a full description of the characteristic polynomials of the toric arrangements defined by these ideals. As an application, we provide a combinatorial verification to the fact that the characteristic polynomial of every ideal subarrangement factors over the dual partition of the ideal in the classical cases.

Two boundary Hecke Algebras and combinatorics of type C
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper gives a Schur-Weyl duality approach to the representation theory of the affine Hecke algebras of type C with unequal parameters. The first step is to realize the affine braid group of type $C_k$ as the group of braids on $k$ strands with two poles. Generalizing familiar methods from the one pole (type A) case, this provides commuting actions of the quantum group $U_q\mathfrak{g}$ and the affine braid group of type $C_k$ on a tensor space $M\otimes N \otimes V^{\otimes k}$. Special cases provide Schur-Weyl pairings between the affine Hecke algebra of type $C_k$ and the quantum group of type $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, resulting in natural labelings of many representations of the affine Hecke algebras of type C by partitions. Following an analysis of the structure of weights of affine Hecke algebra representations (extending the one parameter case to the three parameter case necessary for affine Hecke algebras of type C), we provide an explicit identification of the affine Hecke algebra representations that appear in tensor space (essentially by identifying their Langlands parameters).

On the polynomiality and asymptotics of moments of sizes for random $(n, dn\pm 1)$-core partitions with distinct parts
Published • View PublicationBIB
Amdeberhan's conjectures on the enumeration, the average size, and the largest size of $(n,n+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts have motivated many research on this topic. Recently, Straub and Nath-Sellers obtained formulas for the numbers of $(n, dn-1)$ and $(n, dn+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, respectively. Let $X_{s,t}$ be the size of a uniform random $(s,t)$-core partition with distinct parts when $s$ and $t$ are coprime to each other. Some explicit formulas for the $k$-th moments $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{2n+1,2n+3}^k]$ were given by Zaleski and Zeilberger when $k$ is small. Zaleski also studied the expectation and higher moments of $X_{n,dn-1}$ and conjectured some polynomiality properties concerning them in arXiv:1702.05634. Motivated by the above works, we derive several polynomiality results and asymptotic formulas for the $k$-th moments of $X_{n,dn+1}$ and $X_{n,dn-1}$ in this paper, by studying the beta sets of core partitions. In particular, we show that these $k$-th moments are asymptotically some polynomials of n with degrees at most $2k$, when $d$ is given and $n$ tends to infinity. Moreover, when $d=1$, we derive that the $k$-th moment $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ of $X_{n,n+1}$ is asymptotically equal to $\left(n^2/10\right)^k$ when $n$ tends to infinity. The explicit formulas for the expectations $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn+1}]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn-1}]$ are also given. The $(n,dn-1)$-core case in our results proves several conjectures of Zaleski on the polynomiality of the expectation and higher moments of $X_{n,dn-1}$.

Alternating sign trapezoids and a constant term approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that there is the same number of (n,l)-alternating sign trapezoids as there is of column strict shifted plane partitions of class l-1 with at most n parts in the top row, thereby proving a result that was conjectured independently by Behrend and Aigner. The first objects generalize alternating sign triangles, which have recently been introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and the author who showed that they are counted by the same formula as alternating sign matrices. Column strict shifted plane partitions of a fixed class were introduced in a slightly different form by Andrews, and they essentially generalize descending plane partitions. They also correspond to cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a triangular hole in the center. In addition, we also provide three statistics on each class of objects and show that their joint distribution is the same. We prove our result by employing a constant term approach that is based on the author's operator formula for monotone triangles. This paper complements a forthcoming paper of Behrend and the author, where the six-vertex model approach is used to show equinumeracy as well as generalizations involving statistics that are different from those considered in the present paper.

Line configurations and r-Stirling partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set partition of $[n] := \{1, 2, \dots, n \}$ is called {\em $r$-Stirling} if the numbers $1, 2, \dots, r$ belong to distinct blocks. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono constructed graded ring $R_{n,k}$ depending on two positive integers $k \leq n$ whose algebraic properties are governed by the combinatorics of ordered set partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks. We introduce a variant $R_{n,k}^{(r)}$ of this quotient for ordered $r$-Stirling partitions which depends on three integers $r \leq k \leq n$. We describe the standard monomial basis of $R_{n,k}^{(r)}$ and use the combinatorial notion of the {\em coinversion code} of an ordered set partition to reprove and generalize some results of Haglund et.\ al.\ in a more direct way. Furthermore, we introduce a variety $X_{n,k}^{(r)}$ of line arrangements whose cohomology is presented as the integral form of $R_{n,k}^{(r)}$, generalizing results of Pawlowski and Rhoades.
On a generalisation of spikes

We consider matroids with the property that every subset of the ground set of size $t$ is contained in both an $\ell$-element circuit and an $\ell$-element cocircuit; we say that such a matroid has the $(t,\ell)$-property. We show that for any positive integer $t$, there is a finite number of matroids with the $(t,\ell)$-property for $\ell<2t$; however, matroids with the $(t,2t)$-property form an infinite family. We say a matroid is a $t$-spike if there is a partition of the ground set into pairs such that the union of any $t$ pairs is a circuit and a cocircuit. Our main result is that if a sufficiently large matroid has the $(t,2t)$-property, then it is a $t$-spike. Finally, we present some properties of $t$-spikes.

Constant term formulas for refined enumerations of Gog and Magog trapezoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gog and Magog trapezoids are certain arrays of positive integers that generalize alternating sign matrices (ASMs) and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs) respectively. Zeilberger used constant term formulas to prove that there is the same number of (n,k)-Gog trapezoids as there is of (n,k)-Magog trapezoids, thereby providing so far the only proof for a weak version of a conjecture by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey from 1986. About 20 years ago, Krattenthaler generalized Gog and Magog trapezoids and formulated an extension of their conjecture, and, recently, Biane and Cheballah generalized Gog trapezoids further and formulated a related conjecture. In this paper, we derive constant term formulas for various refined enumerations of generalized Gog trapezoids including those considered by Krattenthaler and by Biane and Cheballah. For this purpose we employ a result on the enumeration of truncated monotone triangles which is in turn based in the author's operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row. As a byproduct, we also generalize the operator formula for monotone triangles by including the inversion number and the complementary inversion number for ASMs. Constant term formulas as well as determinant formulas for the refined Magog trapezoid numbers that appear in Krattenthaler's conjecture are also deduced by using the classical approach based on non-intersecting lattice paths and the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem. Finally, we review and partly extend a few existing tools that may be helpful in relating constant term formulas for Gogs to those for Magogs to eventually prove the above mentioned conjectures.

Patterns in words of ordered set partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
An ordered set partition of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is a partition with an ordering on the parts. Let $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ be the set of ordered set partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks. Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell defined $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)$ to be the set of ordered set partitions in $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ avoiding a permutation pattern $σ$ and obtained the formula for $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)|$ when the pattern $σ$ is of length $2$. Later, Chen, Dai and Zhou found a formula algebraically for $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)|$ when the pattern $σ$ is of length $3$. In this paper, we define a new pattern avoidance for the set $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$, called $\mathcal{WOP}_{n,k}(σ)$, which includes the questions proposed by Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell. We obtain formulas for $|\mathcal{WOP}_{n,k}(σ)|$ combinatorially for any $σ$ of length $ 3$. We also define 3 kinds of descent statistics on ordered set partitions and study the distribution of the descent statistics on $\mathcal{WOP}_{n,k}(σ)$ for $σ$ of length $3$.

Combinatorics of orbit configuration spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
From a group action on a space, define a variant of the configuration space by insisting that no two points inhabit the same orbit. When the action is almost free, this "orbit configuration space" is the complement of an arrangement of subvarieties inside the cartesian product, and we use this structure to study its topology. We give an abstract combinatorial description of its poset of layers (connected components of intersections from the arrangement) which turns out to be of much independent interest as a generalization of partition and Dowling lattices. The close relationship to these classical posets is then exploited to give explicit cohomological calculations.

A Tight Bound for Hypergraph Regularity I
The hypergraph regularity lemma -- the extension of Szemerédi's graph regularity lemma to the setting of $k$-uniform hypergraphs -- is one of the most celebrated combinatorial results obtained in the past decade. By now there are several (very different) proofs of this lemma, obtained by Gowers, by Nagle-Rödl-Schacht-Skokan and by Tao. Unfortunately, what all these proofs have in common is that they yield regular partitions whose order is given by the $k$-th Ackermann function. We show that such Ackermann-type bounds are unavoidable for every $k \ge 2$, thus confirming a prediction of Tao. Prior to our work, the only result of the above type was Gowers' famous lower bound for graph regularity. In this paper we describe the key new ideas which enable us to overcome several barriers which stood in the way of establishing such bounds for hypergraphs of higher uniformity. One of them is a tight bound for a new (very weak) version of the {\em graph} regularity lemma. Using this bound, we prove a lower bound for any regularity lemma of $3$-uniform hypergraphs that satisfies certain mild conditions. We then show how to use this result in order to prove a tight bound for the hypergraph regularity lemmas of Gowers and Frankl--Rödl. We will obtain similar results for hypergraphs of arbitrary uniformity $k\geq 2$ in a subsequent paper.

Cylindric symmetric functions and positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce new families of cylindric symmetric functions as subcoalgebras in the ring of symmetric functions $Λ$ (viewed as a Hopf algebra) which have non-negative structure constants. Combinatorially these cylindric symmetric functions are defined as weighted sums over cylindric reverse plane partitions or - alternatively - in terms of sets of affine permutations. We relate their combinatorial definition to an algebraic construction in terms of the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$ and a specialised cyclotomic Hecke algebra. Using Schur-Weyl duality we show that the new cylindric symmetric functions arise as matrix elements of Lie algebra elements in the subspace of symmetric tensors of a particular level-0 module which can be identified with the small quantum cohomology ring of the $k$-fold product of projective space. The analogous construction in the subspace of alternating tensors gives the known set of cylindric Schur functions which are related to the small quantum cohomology ring of Grassmannians. We prove that cylindric Schur functions form a subcoalgebra in $Λ$ whose structure constants are the 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that the new families of cylindric functions obtained from the subspace of symmetric tensors also share the structure constants of a symmetric Frobenius algebra, which we define in terms of tensor multiplicities of the generalised symmetric group $G(n,1,k)$.

Rado's theorem for rings and modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend classical results of Rado on partition regularity of systems of linear equations with integer coefficients to the case when the coefficient ring is either an arbitrary integral domain or a noetherian ring. In particular, we show that a system of homogeneous linear equations over an infinite integral domain is partition regular if and only if the corresponding matrix satisfies the columns conditions. The crucial idea is to study partition regularity for general modules rather than only for rings. Contrary to previous techniques, our approach is independent of the characteristic of the coefficient ring.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Volumes of Strata of Abelian Differentials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the large genus asymptotics for Masur-Veech volumes of arbitrary strata of Abelian differentials. Through a combinatorial analysis of an algorithm proposed in 2002 by Eskin-Okounkov to exactly evaluate these quantities, we show that the volume $ν_1 \big( \mathcal{H}_1 (m) \big)$ of a stratum indexed by a partition $m = (m_1, m_2, \ldots , m_n)$ is $\big( 4 + o(1) \big) \prod_{i = 1}^n (m_i + 1)^{-1}$ as $2g - 2 = \sum_{i = 1}^n m_i$ tends to $\infty$. This confirms a prediction of Eskin-Zorich and generalizes some of the recent results of Chen-Moeller-Zagier and Sauvaget, who established these limiting statements in the special cases $m = 1^{2g - 2}$ and $m = (2g - 2)$, respectively. We also include an Appendix by Anton Zorich that uses our main result to deduce the large genus asymptotics for Siegel-Veech constants that count certain types of saddle connections.

Partitions of hypergraphs under variable degeneracy constraints
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper deals with partitions of hypergraphs into induced subhypergraphs satisfying constraints on their degeneracy. Our hypergraphs may have multiple edges, but no loops. Given a hypergraph $H$ and a sequence $f=(f_1,f_2, \ldots, f_p)$ of $p\geq 1$ vertex functions $f_i:V(H) \to \mathbb{N}_0$ such that $f_1(v)+f_2(v)+ \cdots + f_p(v)\geq d_H(v)$ for all $v\in V(H)$, we want to find a sequence $(H_1,H_2, \ldots, H_p)$ of vertex disjoint induced subhypergraphs containing all vertices of $H$ such that each hypergraph $H_i$ is strictly $f_i$-degenerate, that is, for every non-empty subhypergraph $H'\subseteq H_i$ there is a vertex $v\in V(H')$ such that $d_{H'}(v)<f_i(v)$. Our main result in this paper says that such a sequence of hypergraphs exists if and only if $(H,f)$ is not a so-called hard pair. Hard pairs form a recursively defined family of configurations, obtained from three basic types of configurations by the operation of merging a vertex. Our main result has several interesting applications related to generalized hypergraph coloring problems.

Factorization theorems for classical group characters, with applications to alternating sign matrices and plane partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 165 (2019) 78-105 • View PublicationBIB
We show that, for a certain class of partitions and an even number of variables of which half are reciprocals of the other half, Schur polynomials can be factorized into products of odd and even orthogonal characters. We also obtain related factorizations involving sums of two Schur polynomials, and certain odd-sized sets of variables. Our results generalize the factorization identities proved by Ciucu and Krattenthaler (Advances in combinatorial mathematics, 39-59, 2009) for partitions of rectangular shape. We observe that if, in some of the results, the partitions are taken to have rectangular or double-staircase shapes and all of the variables are set to 1, then factorization identities for numbers of certain plane partitions, alternating sign matrices and related combinatorial objects are obtained.
