Roundness of grains in cellular microstructures

Many physical systems are composed of polyhedral cells of varying sizes and shapes. These structures are simple in the sense that no more than three faces meet at an edge and no more than four edges meet at a vertex. This means that individual cells can usually be considered as simple, three-dimensional polyhedra. This paper is concerned with determining the distribution of combinatorial types of such polyhedral cells. We introduce the terms \emph{fundamental} and \emph{vertex-truncated} types and apply these concepts to the grain growth microstructure as a testing ground. For these microstructures we demonstrate that most grains are of particular fundamental types, whereas the frequency of vertex-truncated types decreases exponentially with the number of truncations. This can be explained by the evolutionary process through which grain growth structures are formed, and in which energetically unfavorable surfaces are quickly eliminated. Furthermore, we observe that these grain types are `round' in a combinatorial sense: there are no `short' separating cycles that partition the polyhedra into two parts of similar sizes. A particular microstructure derived from the Poisson--Voronoi initial condition is identified as containing an unusually large proportion of round grains. This Round microstructure has an average of $14.036$ faces per grain, and is conjectured to be more resistant to topological change than the steady-state grain growth microstructure.
Algebraic functions with Fermat property, eigenvalues of transfer operator and Riemann zeros, and other open problems
In this note we list a number of open problems in the fields of number theory, combinatorics, and representation theory: algebraic functions with Fermat property; power product expansion of the generating function for the partition function; relation between the non-trivial Riemann zeros and eigenvalues of the transfer operator; functional equation related to norm forms; two problems from geometric combinatorics; a problem on the moments of the Minkowski question mark function; a question in representation theory; a problem on interpolating the moments of the Stern's diatomic sequence; an arithmetic properties of the binary composition function.

A Hamilton cycle in a directed graph $G$ is a cycle that passes through every vertex of $G$. A Hamiltonian decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. In the late $60$s Kelly conjectured that every regular tournament has a Hamilton decomposition. This conjecture was recently settled by Kühn and Osthus, who proved more generally that every $r$-regular $n$-vertex oriented graph $G$ (without antiparallel edges) with $r=cn$ for some fixed $c>3/8$ has a Hamiltonian decomposition, provided $n=n(c)$ is sufficiently large. In this paper we address the natural question of estimating the number of such decompositions of $G$ and show that this number is $n^{(1-o(1))cn^2}$. In addition, we also obtain a new and much simpler proof for the approximate version of Kelly's conjecture.
Gibbs partitions: the convergent case

We study Gibbs partitions that typically form a unique giant component. The remainder is shown to converge in total variation toward a Boltzmann-distributed limit structure. We demon- strate how this setting encompasses arbitrary weighted assemblies of tree-like combinatorial structures. As an application, we establish smooth growth along lattices for small block-stable classes of graphs. Random graphs with n vertices from such classes are shown to form a giant connected component. The small fragments may converge toward different Poisson Boltzmann limit graphs, depending along which lattice we let n tend to infinity. Since proper addable minor-closed classes of graphs belong to the more general family of small block-stable classes, this recovers and generalizes results by McDiarmid (2009).

Let $b(n)$ denote the number of cubic partition pairs of $n$. In this paper, we aim to provide a strategy to obtain arithmetic properties of $b(n)$. This gives affirmative answers to two of Lin's conjectures.

The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The invariant ideal $I_n$ is the ideal generated by all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. The quotient $R_n = \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_n}$ is called the coinvariant algebra. The coinvariant algebra $R_n$ has received a great deal of study in algebraic and geometric combinatorics. We introduce a generalization $I_{n,k} \subseteq \mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ of the ideal $I_n$ indexed by two positive integers $k \leq n$. The corresponding quotient $R_{n,k} := \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_{n,k}}$ carries a graded action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and specializes to $R_n$ when $k = n$. We generalize many of the nice properties of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$. In particular, we describe the Hilbert series of $R_{n,k}$, give extensions of the Artin and Garsia-Stanton monomial bases of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$, determine the reduced Gröbner basis for $I_{n,k}$ with respect to the lexicographic monomial order, and describe the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$. Just as the combinatorics of $R_n$ are controlled by permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, we will show that the combinatorics of $R_{n,k}$ are controlled by ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ with $k$ blocks. The {\em Delta Conjecture} of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the theory of diagonal coinvariants. We will show that the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$ is (up to a minor twist) the $t = 0$ specialization of the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture. It remains an open problem to give a bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $V_{n,k}$ whose Frobenius image is even conjecturally equal to any of the expressions in the Delta Conjecture; our module $R_{n,k}$ solves this problem in the specialization $t = 0$.

In this paper, we introduce the rhombic alternative tableaux, whose weight generating functions provide combinatorial formulae to compute the steady state probabilities of the two-species ASEP. In the ASEP, there are two species of particles, one heavy and one light, hopping right and left on a one-dimensional finite lattice with open boundaries. Parameters $α$, $β$, and $q$ describe the hopping probabilities. The rhombic alternative tableaux are enumerated by the Lah numbers, which also enumerate certain assemblées of permutations. We describe a bijection between the rhombic alternative tableaux and these assemblées. We also provide an insertion algorithm that gives a weight generating function for the assemblées. Combined, these results give a bijective proof for the weight generating function for the rhombic alternative tableaux, which is also the partition function of the two-species ASEP at $q=1$.
Graphs vertex-partitionable into strong cliques
A graph is said to be well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same size. In 1999, Yamashita and Kameda introduced a subclass of well-covered graphs, called localizable graphs and defined as graphs having a partition of the vertex set into strong cliques, where a clique in a graph is strong if it intersects all maximal independent sets. Yamashita and Kameda observed that all well-covered trees are localizable, pointed out that the converse inclusion fails in general, and asked for a characterization of localizable graphs.
In this paper we obtain several structural and algorithmic results about localizable graphs. Our results include a proof of the fact that every very well-covered graph is localizable and characterizations of localizable graphs within the classes of line graphs, triangle-free graphs, $C_4$-free graphs, and cubic graphs, each leading to a polynomial time recognition algorithm. On the negative side, we prove NP-hardness of recognizing localizable graphs within the classes of weakly chordal graphs, complements of line graphs, and graphs of independence number three. Furthermore, using localizable graphs we disprove a conjecture due to Zaare-Nahandi about $k$-partite well-covered graphs having all maximal cliques of size $k$. Our results unify and generalize several results from the literature.
Asymptotics of Pattern Avoidance in the Permutation-Tuple and Klazar Set Partition Settings
We consider asymptotics of set partition pattern avoidance in the sense of Klazar. One of the results of this paper extends work of Alweiss, and finds a classification for set partitions $π$ such that the number of set partitions of $[n]$ avoiding $π$ grows more slowly than $n^{cn}$ for all $c>0$. Several conjectures are proposed, and the related question of asymptotics of parallel ($k$-tuple) permutation pattern avoidance is considered and solved completely to within an exponential factor, generalizing Marcus and Tardos's 2004 proof of the Stanley-Wilf Conjecture.

For a vector $\mathbf a=(a_1,\ldots,a_r)$ of positive integers we prove formulas for the restricted partition function $p_{\mathbf a}(n): = $ the number of integer solutions $(x_1,\dots,x_r)$ to $\sum_{j=1}^r a_jx_j=n$ with $x_1\geq 0, \ldots, x_r\geq 0$ and its polynomial part.

Given a finite poset $P$, we associate a simple graph denoted by $G_P$ with all connected order ideals of $P$ as vertices, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they have nonempty intersection and are incomparable with respect to set inclusion. We establish a bijection between the set of maximum independent sets of $G_P$ and the set of $P$-forests, introduced by Féray and Reiner in their study of the fundamental generating function $F_P(\textbf{x})$ associated with $P$-partitions. Based on this bijection, in the cases when $P$ is naturally labeled we show that $F_P(\textbf{x})$ can factorise, such that each factor is a summation of rational functions determined by maximum independent sets of a connected component of $G_P$. This approach enables us to give an alternative proof for Féray and Reiner's nice formula of $F_P(\textbf{x})$ for the case of $P$ being a naturally labeled forest with duplications. Another consequence of our result is a product formula to compute the number of linear extensions of $P$.
Markov Chains from Descent Operators on Combinatorial Hopf Algebras
We develop a general theory for Markov chains whose transition probabilities are the coefficients of descent operators on combinatorial Hopf algebras. These model the breaking-then-recombining of combinational objects. Examples include the various card-shuffles of Diaconis, Fill and Pitman, Fulman's restriction-then-induction chains on the representations of the symmetric group, and a plethora of new chains on trees, partitions and permutations. The eigenvalues of these chains can be calculated in a uniform manner using Hopf algebra structure theory, and there is a simple expression for their stationary distributions. For an important subclass of chains analogous to the top-to-random shuffle, we derive a full right eigenbasis, from which follow exact expressions for expectations of certain statistics of interest. This greatly generalises the coproduct-then-product chains previously studied in joint work with Persi Diaconis and Arun Ram.

In this paper we study the Szeged index of partial cubes and hence generalize the result proved by V. Chepoi and S. Klavžar, who calculated this index for benzenoid systems. It is proved that the problem of calculating the Szeged index of a partial cube can be reduced to the problem of calculating the Szeged indices of weighted quotient graphs with respect to a partition coarser than $Θ$-partition. Similar result for the Wiener index was recently proved by S. Klavžar and M. J. Nadjafi-Arani. Furthermore, we show that such quotient graphs of partial cubes are again partial cubes. Since the results can be used to efficiently calculate the Wiener index and the Szeged index for specific families of chemical graphs, we consider $C_4C_8$ systems and show that the two indices of these graphs can be computed in linear time.

A matrix A is image partition regular over Q provided that whenever Q - {0} is finitely coloured, there is a vector x with entries in Q - {0} such that the entries of Ax are monochromatic. It is kernel partition regular over Q provided that whenever Q - {0} is finitely coloured, the matrix has a monochromatic member of its kernel. We establish a duality for these notions valid for both finite and infinite matrices. We also investigate the extent to which this duality holds for matrices partition regular over proper subsemigroups of Q.

We introduce and study s-lecture hall P-partitions which is a generalization of s-lecture hall partitions to labeled (weighted) posets. We provide generating function identities for s-lecture hall P-partitions that generalize identities obtained by Savage and Schuster for s-lecture hall partitions, and by Stanley for P-partitions. We also prove that the corresponding (P,s)-Eulerian polynomials are real-rooted for certain pairs (P,s), and speculate on unimodality properties of these polynomials.

We consider the two block stochastic block model on $n$ nodes with asymptotically equal cluster sizes. The connection probabilities within and between cluster are denoted by $p_n:=\frac{a_n}{n}$ and $q_n:=\frac{b_n}{n}$ respectively. Mossel et al.(2012) considered the case when $a_n=a$ and $b_n=b$ are fixed. They proved the probability models of the stochastic block model and that of Erd{ö}s-R{é}nyi graph with same average degree are mutually contiguous whenever $(a-b)^2<2(a+b)$ and are asymptotically singular whenever $(a-b)^2>2(a+b)$. Mossel et al.(2012) also proved that when $(a-b)^2<2(a+b)$ no algorithm is able to find an estimate of the labeling of the nodes which is positively correlated with the true labeling. It is natural to ask what happens when $a_n$ and $b_n$ both grow to infinity. We prove that their results extend to the case when $a_n=o(n)$ and $b_n=o(n)$. We also consider the case when $\frac{a_n}{n} \to p \in (0,1)$ and $(a_n-b_n)^2= Θ(a_n+b_n)$. Observe that in this case $\frac{b_n}{n} \to p$ also. We show that here the models are mutually contiguous if $(a_n-b_n)^2< 2(1-p)(a_n+b_n)$ and they are asymptotically singular if $(a_n-b_n)^2 > 2(1-p)(a_n+b_n)$. Further we also prove it is impossible find an estimate of the labeling of the nodes which is positively correlated with the true labeling whenever $(a_n-b_n)^2< 2(1-p)(a_n+b_n)$. The results of this paper justify the negative part of a conjecture made in Decelle et al.(2011) for dense graphs.
Schur partition theorems via perfect crystal
Motivated by spin modular representations of the symmetric groups, we propose two generalizations of the Schur regular partitions for an odd integer $p\geq 3$. One forms a subset of the set of $p$-strict partitions, and the other forms that of strict partitions. We prove that each set has a basic $A^{(2)}_{p-1}$-crystal structure. For $p=3$, it reproves Schur's 1926 partition theorem, a mod 6 analog of Rogers-Ramanujan partition theorem (RRPT). For $p=5$, it gives a computer-free proof of a conjecture by Andrews during his 3-parameter generalization of RRPT, which was first proved by Andrews-Bessenrodt-Olsson.

We study oscillations in the eigenfunctions for a fractional Schrödinger operator on the real line. An argument in the spirit of Courant's nodal domain theorem applies to an associated local problem in the upper half plane and provides a bound on the number of nodal domains for the extensions of the eigenfunctions. Using the combinatorial properties of noncrossing partitions, we turn the nodal domain bound into an estimate for the number of sign changes in the eigenfunctions. We discuss applications in the periodic setting and the Steklov problem on planar domains.
Pattern-Avoiding Polytopes

Two well-known polytopes whose vertices are indexed by permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are the permutohedron $P_n$ and the Birkhoff polytope $B_n$. We consider polytopes $P_n(Π)$ and $B_n(Π)$, whose vertices correspond to the permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ avoiding a set of patterns $Π$. For various choices of $Π$, we explore the Ehrhart polynomials and $h^*$-vectors of these polytopes as well as other aspects of their combinatorial structure.
For $P_n(Π)$, we consider all subsets $Π\subseteq \mathfrak{S}_3$ and are able to provide results in most cases. To illustrate, $P_n(123,132)$ is a Pitman-Stanley polytope, the number of interior lattice points in $P_n(132,312)$ is a derangement number, and the normalized volume of $P_n(123,231,312)$ is the number of trees on $n$ vertices.
The polytopes $B_n(Π)$ seem much more difficult to analyze, so we focus on four particular choices of $Π$. First we show that the $B_n(231,321)$ is exactly the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope. Next we prove that for any $Π$ containing $\{123,312\}$ we have $h^*(B_n(Π))=1$. Finally, we study $B_n(132,312)$ and $\widetilde{B}_n(123)$, where the tilde indicates that we choose vertices corresponding to alternating permutations avoiding the pattern $123$. In both cases we use order complexes of posets and techniques from toric algebra to construct regular, unimodular triangulations of the polytopes. The posets involved turn out to be isomorphic to the lattices of Young diagrams contained in a certain shape, and this permits us to give an exact expression for the normalized volumes of the corresponding polytopes via the hook formula. Finally, Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions allows us to show that their $h^*$-vectors are symmetric and unimodal.
Various questions and conjectures are presented throughout.

Given a countable graph, we say a set $A$ of its vertices is \emph{universal} if it contains every countable graph as an induced subgraph, and $A$ is \emph{weakly universal} if it contains every finite graph as an induced subgraph. We show that, for almost every graph on $\mathbb N$, $(1)$ every set of positive upper density is universal, and $(2)$ every set with divergent reciprocal sums is weakly universal. We show that the second result is sharp (i.e., a random graph on $\mathbb N$ will almost surely contain non-universal sets with divergent reciprocal sums) and, more generally, that neither of these two results holds for a large class of partition regular families.
