Jacobi's triple product, mock theta functions, unimodal sequences and the $q$-bracket
Published • View PublicationBIB
In Ramanujan's final letter to Hardy, he listed examples of a strange new class of infinite series he called "mock theta functions". It turns out all of these examples are essentially specializations of a so-called universal mock theta function $g_3(z,q)$ of Gordon-McIntosh. Here we show that $g_3$ arises naturally from the reciprocal of the classical Jacobi triple product -- and is intimately tied to rank generating functions for unimodal sequences, which are connected to mock modular and quantum modular forms -- under the action of an operator related to statistical physics and partition theory, the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov. Secondly, we find $g_3(z,q)$ to extend in $q$ to the entire complex plane minus the unit circle, and give a finite formula for this universal mock theta function at roots of unity, that is simple by comparison to other such formulas in the literature; we also indicate similar formulas for other $q$-hypergeometric series. Finally, we look at interesting "quantum" behaviors of mock theta functions inside, outside, and on the unit circle.

Complexity of inheritance of $\mathcal{F}$-convexity for restricted games induced by minimum partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G = (N,E,w)$ be a weighted communication graph (with weight function $w$ on $E$). For every subset $A \subseteq N$, we delete in the subset $E(A)$ of edges with ends in $A$, all edges of minimum weight in $E(A)$. Then the connected components of the corresponding induced subgraph constitute a partition of $A$ that we call $P_{\min}(A)$. For every game $(N, v)$, we define the $P_{\min}$-restricted game $(N, \bar{v})$ by $\bar{v}(A) = \sum_{F \in P_{\min}(A)} v(F)$ for all $A \subseteq N$. We prove that we can decide in polynomial time if there is inheritance of $\mathcal{F}$-convexity from $(N, v)$ to the $P_{\min}$-restricted game $(N, \bar{v})$ where $\mathcal{F}$-convexity is obtained by restricting convexity to connected subsets.

On Stanley's theorem and its Generalizations
In this paper we go on to discuss about Stanley's theorem in Integer partitions. We give two different versions for the proof of the generalization of Stanley's theorem illustrating different techniques that may be applied to profitably understand the underlying structure behind the theorem.

Perfect vector sets, properly overlapping partitions, and largest empty box
We revisit the following problem (along with its higher dimensional variant): Given a set $S$ of $n$ points inside an axis-parallel rectangle $U$ in the plane, find a maximum-area axis-parallel sub-rectangle that is contained in $U$ but contains no points of $S$. (I) We present an algorithm that finds a large empty box amidst $n$ points in $[0,1]^d$: a box whose volume is at least $\frac{\log{d}}{4(n + \log{d})}$ can be computed in $O(n+d \log{d})$ time. (II) To better analyze the above approach, we introduce the concepts of perfect vector sets and properly overlapping partitions, in connection to the minimum volume of a maximum empty box amidst $n$ points in the unit hypercube $[0,1]^d$, and derive bounds on their sizes.

The MacMahon $q$-Catalan is convex
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n\geq2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the convexity of the so-called MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials $C_n(q)=\frac1{[n+1]_q}\left[ 2n \atop n \right]_q$ as functions of $q$. Along the way, several intermediate results on inequalities are presented including a commentary on the convexity of the generation function for the integer partitions.

Correlation between Adomian and Partial Exponential Bell Polynomials
Published in Comptes Rendus Mathematique 355(9) (2017) 929-936 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain some recurrence relationships among the partition vectors of the partial exponential Bell polynomials. On using such results, the $n$-th Adomian polynomial for any nonlinear operator can be expressed explicitly in terms of the partial exponential Bell polynomials. Some new identities for the partial exponential Bell polynomials are obtained by solving certain ordinary differential equations using Adomian decomposition method.

Decomposition of a complete bipartite multigraph into arbitrary cycle sizes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph $G$, let $μ_G(xy)$ denote the number of edges between $x$ and $y$ in $G$. Let $λK_{v,u}$ be the graph $(V\cup U,E)$ with $|V|=v$, $|U|=u$, and \[ μ_G(xy)=\begin{cases} λ&\mbox{if $x\in U$ and $y\in V$ or if $x\in V$ and $y\in U$}\\ 0 &\mbox{otherwise.} \\ \end{cases} \] Let $M$ be a sequence of non-negative integers $m_1,m_2,\ldots,m_n$. An $(M)$-cycle decomposition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the edge set into cycles of lengths $m_1,m_2,\ldots,m_n$. In this paper, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an $(M)$-cycle decomposition of $λK_{v,u}$.
On semiring complexity of Schur polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Semiring complexity is the version of arithmetic circuit complexity that allows only two operations: addition and multiplication. We show that when the number of variables is fixed, the semiring complexity of a Schur polynomial $s_λ$ is $O(log(λ_1))$; here $λ_1$ is the largest part of the partition $λ$.

Coxeter-Catalan combinatorics and Temperley-Lieb algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce bijections between generalized type $A_n$ noncrossing partitions (that is, associated to arbitrary standard Coxeter elements) and fully commutative elements of the same type. The latter index the diagram basis of the classical Temperley-Lieb algebra, while for each choice of standard Coxeter element the corresponding noncrossing partitions also index a basis, given by the images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra of the simple elements of the dual Garside structure (associated to this choice of standard Coxeter element) of the Artin braid group on $n+1$ strands. We then show that our bijections come from triangular base changes between the diagram basis and the various bases indexed by noncrossing partitions, by explicitly describing the orders giving triangularity. These orders were introduced in a joint paper with Williams and provide exotic lattice structures on noncrossing partitions. Several combinatorial objects are introduced along the way, including an involution on the set of noncrossing partitions.
On Reay's relaxed Tverberg conjecture and generalizations of Conway's thrackle conjecture
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 25 (3), P3.16 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
Reay's relaxed Tverberg conjecture and Conway's thrackle conjecture are open problems about the geometry of pairwise intersections. Reay asked for the minimum number of points in Euclidean d-space that guarantees any such point set admits a partition into r parts, any k of whose convex hulls intersect. Here we give new and improved lower bounds for this number, which Reay conjectured to be independent of k. We prove a colored version of Reay's conjecture for k sufficiently large, but nevertheless k independent of dimension d. Requiring convex hulls to intersect pairwise severely restricts combinatorics. This is a higher-dimensional analog of Conway's thrackle conjecture or its linear special case. We thus study convex-geometric and higher-dimensional analogs of the thrackle conjecture alongside Reay's problem and conjecture (and prove in two special cases) that the number of convex sets in the plane is bounded by the total number of vertices they involve whenever there exists a transversal set for their pairwise intersections. We thus isolate a geometric property that leads to bounds as in the thrackle conjecture. We also establish tight bounds for the number of facets of higher-dimensional analogs of linear thrackles and conjecture their continuous generalizations.

$SO(N)$ Lattice Gauge Theory, planar and beyond
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lattice Gauge theories have been studied in the physics literature as discrete approximations to quantum Yang-Mills theory for a long time. Primary statistics of interest in these models are expectations of the so called "Wilson loop variables". In this article we continue the program initiated by Chatterjee (2015) to understand Wilson loop expectations in Lattice Gauge theories in a certain limit through gauge-string duality. The objective in this paper is to better understand the underlying combinatorics in the strong coupling regime, by giving a more geometric picture of string trajectories involving correspondence to objects such as decorated trees and non-crossing partitions. Using connections with Free Probability theory, we provide an elaborate description of loop expectations in the planar setting, which provides certain insights about structures of higher dimensional trajectories as well. Exploiting this, we construct an example showing that in any dimension, the Wilson loop area law lower bound does not hold in full generality.

Generalized Foulkes modules and maximal and minimal constituents of plethysms of Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves a combinatorial rule giving all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ such that the Schur function $s_λ$ appears in a plethysm of two arbitrary Schur functions. Determining the decomposition of these plethysms has been identified by Stanley as a key open problem in algebraic combinatorics. As corollaries we prove three conjectures of Agaoka on the partitions labelling the lexicographically greatest and least Schur functions appearing in an arbitrary plethysm. We also show that the multiplicity of the Schur function labelled by the lexicographically least constituent may be arbitrarily large. The proof is carried out in the symmetric group and gives an explicit non-zero homomorphism corresponding to each maximal or minimal partition.

On q-integrals over order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial study of multiple $q$-integrals is developed. This includes a $q$-volume of a convex polytope, which depends upon the order of $q$-integration. A multiple $q$-integral over an order polytope of a poset is interpreted as a generating function of linear extensions of the poset. Specific modifications of posets are shown to give predictable changes in $q$-integrals over their respective order polytopes. This method is used to combinatorially evaluate some generalized $q$-beta integrals. One such application is a combinatorial interpretation of a $q$-Selberg integral. New generating functions for generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and reverse plane partitions are established. A $q$-analogue to a well known result in Ehrhart theory is generalized using $q$-volumes and $q$-Ehrhart polynomials.

Squareness for the Monopole-Dimer model
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, Volume 24, Issue 2 (2020), 237-255 • View PublicationBIB
The monopole-dimer model introduced recently is an exactly-solvable signed generalisation of the dimer model. We show that the partition function of the monopole-dimer model on a graph invariant under a fixed-point free involution is a perfect square. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the square-root of the partition function for such graphs in terms of a monopole-dimer model on a new kind of graph with two types of edges which we call a dicot. The partition function of the latter can be written as a determinant, this time of a complex adjacency matrix. This formulation generalises T. T. Wu's assignment of imaginary orientation for the grid graph to planar dicots. As an application, we compute the partition function for a family of non-planar dicots with positive weights.

Topological recursion on the Bessel curve
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Witten-Kontsevich theorem states that a certain generating function for intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable curves is a tau-function for the KdV integrable hierarchy. This generating function can be recovered via the topological recursion applied to the Airy curve $x=\frac{1}{2}y^2$. In this paper, we consider the topological recursion applied to the irregular spectral curve $xy^2=\frac{1}{2}$, which we call the Bessel curve. We prove that the associated partition function is also a KdV tau-function, which satisfies Virasoro constraints, a cut-and-join type recursion, and a quantum curve equation. Together, the Airy and Bessel curves govern the local behaviour of all spectral curves with simple branch points.

Shifted symmetric functions and multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams
Published in Journal of Algebra, 483, pp. 262-305, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study shifted Schur functions $S_μ^\star$, as well as a new family of shifted symmetric functions $\mathfrak{K}_μ$ linked to Kostka numbers. We prove that both are polynomials in multi-rectangular coordinates, with nonnegative coefficients when written in terms of falling factorials. We then propose a conjectural generalization to the Jack setting. This conjecture is a lifting of Knop and Sahi's positivity result for usual Jack polynomials and resembles recent conjectures of Lassalle. We prove our conjecture for one-part partitions.

For fixed s, the size of an (s, s+1)-core partition with distinct parts can be seen as a random variable X_s. Using computer-assisted methods, we derive formulas for the expectation, variance, and higher moments of X_s. Our results give good evidence that X_s is asymptotically normal.

Combinatorial properties of symmetric polynomials from integrable vertex models in finite lattice
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 58, 091703 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study several combinatorial properties of a class of symmetric polynomials from the point of view of integrable vertex models in finite lattice. We introduce the $L$-operator related with the $U_q(sl_2)$ $R$-matrix, and construct the wavefunctions and their duals. We prove the exact correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials which is a quantum group deformation of the Grothendieck polynomials. This is proved by combining the matrix product method and an analysis on the domain wall boundary partition functions. As applications of the correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials, we derive several properties of the symmetric polynomials such as the determinant pairing formulas and the branching formulas by analyzing the domain wall boundary partition functions and the matrix elements of the $B$-operators.

Asymptotic results on Klazar set partition avoidance
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (March 19, 2018) dmtcs:3112 • View PublicationBIB
We establish asymptotic bounds for the number of partitions of $[n]$ avoiding a given partition in Klazar's sense, obtaining the correct answer to within an exponential for the block case. This technique also enables us to establish a general lower bound. Additionally, we consider a graph theoretic restatement of partition avoidance problems, and propose several conjectures.
