Growth partition functions for cancellative infinite monoids
We introduce the {\it growth partition function} $Z_{Γ,G}(t)$ associate with any cancellative infinite monoid $Γ$ with a finite generator system $G$. It is a power series in $t$ whose coefficients lie in integral Lie-like space $\mathcal{L}_{\Z}(Γ,G)$ in the configuration algebra associated with the Cayley graph $(Γ,G)$. We determine them for homogeneous monoids admitting left greatest common divisor and right common multiple. Then, for braid monoids and Artin monoids of finite type, using that formula, we explicitly determine their limit partition functions $ω_{Γ,G}$.
A stronger result on fractional strong colourings
Aharoni, Berger and Ziv recently proved the fractional relaxation of the strong colouring conjecture. In this note we generalize their result as follows. Let $k\geq 1$ and partition the vertices of a graph $G$ into sets $V_1,..., V_r$, such that for $1\leq i \leq r$ every vertex in $V_i$ has at most $\max\{k, |V_i|-k \}$ neighbours outside $V_i$. Then there is a probability distribution on the stable sets of $G$ such that a stable set drawn from this distribution hits each vertex in $V_i$ with probability $1/|V_i|$, for $1\leq i\leq r$. We believe that this result will be useful as a tool in probabilistic approaches to bounding the chromatic number and fractional chromatic number.
Well-covered and uniformly well-covered graphs
A graph $G$ is called well-covered if all maximal independent sets of vertices have the same cardinality. A well-covered graph $G$ is called uniformly well-covered if there is a partition of the set of vertices of $G$ such that each maximal independent set of vertices has exactly one vertex in common with each part in the partition. The problem of determining which graphs is well-covered, was proposed in 1970 by M.D. Plummer. Let $\cal G$ be the class of graphs with some disjoint maximal cliques covering all vertices. In this paper, some necessary and sufficient conditions are presented to recognize which graphs in the class $\cal G$ are well-covered or uniformly well-covered. This characterization has a nice algebraic interpretation according to zero-divisor elements of edge ring of graphs which is illustrated in this paper.

In this short note we construct a simple cut-and-join operator representation for Kontsevich-Witten tau-function that is the partition function of the two-dimensional topological gravity. Our derivation is based on the Virasoro constraints. Possible applications of the obtained expression are discussed.

We obtain the generating functions for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and left nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding three neighbor patterns (neighbor alignments, left nestings and right nestings) and set partitions avoiding right nestings via an intermediate structure of integer compositions. Such integer compositions are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with self-modified ascent sequences or $3\bar{1}52\bar{4}$-avoiding permutations, as shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev.
Decomposition of Geometric Set Systems and Graphs
We study two decomposition problems in combinatorial geometry. The first part deals with the decomposition of multiple coverings of the plane. We say that a planar set is cover-decomposable if there is a constant m such that any m-fold covering of the plane with its translates is decomposable into two disjoint coverings of the whole plane. Pach conjectured that every convex set is cover-decomposable. We verify his conjecture for polygons. Moreover, if m is large enough, we prove that any m-fold covering can even be decomposed into k coverings. Then we show that the situation is exactly the opposite in 3 dimensions, for any polyhedron and any $m$ we construct an m-fold covering of the space that is not decomposable. We also give constructions that show that concave polygons are usually not cover-decomposable. We start the first part with a detailed survey of all results on the cover-decomposability of polygons.
The second part investigates another geometric partition problem, related to planar representation of graphs. The slope number of a graph G is the smallest number s with the property that G has a straight-line drawing with edges of at most s distinct slopes and with no bends. We examine the slope number of bounded degree graphs. Our main results are that if the maximum degree is at least 5, then the slope number tends to infinity as the number of vertices grows but every graph with maximum degree at most 3 can be embedded with only five slopes. We also prove that such an embedding exists for the related notion called slope parameter. Finally, we study the planar slope number, defined only for planar graphs as the smallest number s with the property that the graph has a straight-line drawing in the plane without any crossings such that the edges are segments of only s distinct slopes. We show that the planar slope number of planar graphs with bounded degree is bounded.
On the growth of restricted integer partition functions

We study the rate of growth of $p(n,S,M)$, the number of partitions of $n$ whose parts all belong to $S$ and whose multiplicities all belong to $M$, where $S$ (resp. $M$) are given infinite sets of positive (resp. nonnegative) integers. We show that if $M$ is all nonnegative integers then $p(n,S,M)$ cannot be of only polynomial growth, and that no sharper statement can be made. We ask: if $p(n,S,M)>0$ for all large enough $n$, can $p(n,S,M)$ be of polynomial growth in $n$?
The Möbius function of partitions with restricted block size

We study filters in the partition lattice formed by restricting to partitions by type. The Möbius function is determined in terms of the easier-to-compute descent set statistics on permutations and the Möbius function of filters in the lattice of integer compositions. When the underlying integer partition is a knapsack partition, the Möbius function on integer compositions is determined by a topological argument. In this proof the permutahedron makes a cameo appearance.
Multiplicity-free Skew Schur functions with full interval support
It is known that the Schur expansion of a skew Schur function runs over the interval of partitions, equipped with dominance order, defined by the least and the most dominant Littlewood-Richardson filling of the skew shape. We characterise skew Schur functions (and therefore the product of two Schur functions) which are multiplicity-free and the resulting Schur expansion runs over the whole interval of partitions, i.e. skew Schur functions having Littlewood-Richardson coefficients always equal to $1$ over the full interval.

The notion of exponential Dowling structures is introduced, generalizing Stanley's original theory of exponential structures. Enumerative theory is developed to determine the Möbius function of exponential Dowling structures, including a restriction of these structures to elements whose types satisfy a semigroup condition. Stanley's study of permutations associated with exponential structures leads to a similar vein of study for exponential Dowling structures. In particular, for the extended r-divisible partition lattice we show the Möbius function is, up to a sign, the number of permutations in the symmetric group on rn+k elements having descent set {r, 2r, ..., nr}. Using Wachs' original EL-labeling of the r-divisible partition lattice, the extended r-divisible partition lattice is shown to be EL-shellable.
An integration of Euler's pentagonal partition
A recurrent formula is presented, for the enumeration of the compositions of positive integers as sums over multisets of positive integers, that closely resembles Euler's recurrence based on the pentagonal numbers, but where the coefficients result from a discrete integration of Euler's coefficients. Both a bijective proof and one based on generating functions show the equivalence of the subject recurrences.
Notes On U(1) Instanton Counting On $A_{l-1}$ ALE Spaces
In this note, we investigate the detailed relationship between the orbifold partition counting and the (l-quotient, l-core) pair counting. We show that the orbifold partition counting is exactly the same as the (l-quotient, l-core) pair counting.

We show that the discretized configuration space of $k$ points in the $n$-simplex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension $n-k+1$. This space is homeomorphic to the order complex of the poset of ordered partial partitions of $\{1,...,n+1\}$ with exactly $k$ parts. We compute the exponential generating function for the Euler characteristic of this space in two different ways, thereby obtaining a topological proof of a combinatorial recurrence satisfied by the Stirling numbers of the second kind.
Supplemental material to the article "Partitions of the triangles of the cross polytope into surfaces''
We present a constructive proof, that there exists a decomposition of the 2-skeleton of the k-dimensional cross polytope β^k into closed surfaces of genus \leq 1, each with a transitive automorphism group given by the vertex transitive Z_{2k}-action on β^k. Furthermore we show, that for each k \equiv 1,5(6) the 2-skeleton of the (k-1)-simplex is a union of highly symmetric tori and Möbius strips.
Quasi-randomness of graph balanced cut properties

Quasi-random graphs can be informally described as graphs whose edge distribution closely resembles that of a truly random graph of the same edge density. Recently, Shapira and Yuster proved the following result on quasi-randomness of graphs. Let $k \ge 2$ be a fixed integer, $α_1,...,α_k$ be positive reals satisfying $\sum_{i} α_i = 1$ and $(α_1,..., α_k) \neq (1/k,...,1/k)$, and $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. If for every partition of the vertices of $G$ into sets $V_1,..., V_k$ of size $α_1 n,..., α_k n$, the number of complete graphs on $k$ vertices which have exactly one vertex in each of these sets is similar to what we would expect in a random graph, then the graph is quasi-random. However, the method of quasi-random hypergraphs they used did not provide enough information to resolve the case $(1/k,..., 1/k)$ for graphs. In their work, Shapira and Yuster asked whether this case also forces the graph to be quasi-random. Janson also posed the same question in his study of quasi-randomness under the framework of graph limits. In this paper, we positively answer their question.
Radon partitions in convexity spaces
Tverberg's theorem asserts that every (k-1)(d+1)+1 points in R^d can be partitioned into k parts, so that the convex hulls of the parts have a common intersection. Calder and Eckhoff asked whether there is a purely combinatorial deduction of Tverberg's theorem from the special case k=2. We dash the hopes of a purely combinatorial deduction, but show that the case k=2 does imply that every set of O(k^2 log^2 k) points admits a Tverberg partition into k parts.

We define higher order infinitesimal noncommutative probability space and infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals. In this framework, we generalize to higher order the notion of infinitesimal freeness, via a vanishing of mixed cumulants condition. We also introduce and study some non-crossing partitions related to this notion. Finally, as an application, we show how to compute the successive derivatives of the free convolution of two time-indexed families of distributions from their individual derivatives.

Given non-negative weights w_S on the k-subsets S of a km-element set V, we consider the sum of the products w_{S_1} ... w_{S_m} for all partitions V = S_1 cup ... cup S_m into pairwise disjoint k-subsets S_i. When the weights w_S are positive and within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other, we present a simple polynomial time algorithm to approximate the sum within a polynomial in m factor. In the process, we obtain higher-dimensional versions of the van der Waerden and Bregman-Minc bounds for permanents. We also discuss applications to counting of perfect and nearly perfect matchings in hypergraphs.

Given a morphism from an affine semigroup Q to an arbitrary commutative monoid, it is shown that every fiber possesses an affine stratification: a partition into a finite disjoint union of translates of normal affine semigroups. The proof rests on mesoprimary decomposition of monoid congruences [arXiv:1107.4699] and a novel list of equivalent conditions characterizing the existence of an affine stratification. The motivating consequence of the main result is a special case of a conjecture due to Guo and the author [arXiv:0908.3473, arXiv:1105.5420] on the existence of affine stratifications for (the set of winning positions of) any lattice game. The special case proved here assumes that the lattice game has finite misére quotient, in the sense of Plambeck and Siegel [arXiv:math/0501315, arXiv:math/0609825v5].

The Laguerre symmetric functions introduced in the note are indexed by arbitrary partitions and depend on two continuous parameters. The top degree homogeneous component of every Laguerre symmetric function coincides with the Schur function with the same index. Thus, the Laguerre symmetric functions form a two-parameter family of inhomogeneous bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These new symmetric functions are obtained from the N-variate symmetric polynomials of the same name by a procedure of analytic continuation. The Laguerre symmetric functions are eigenvectors of a second order differential operator, which depends on the same two parameters and serves as the infinitesimal generator of an infinite-dimensional diffusion process X(t). The process X(t) admits approximation by some jump processes related to one more new family of symmetric functions, the Meixner symmetric functions. In equilibrium, the process X(t) can be interpreted as a time-dependent point process on the punctured real line R\{0}, and the point configurations may be interpreted as doubly infinite collections of particles of two opposite charges with log-gas-type interaction. The dynamical correlation functions of the equilibrium process have determinantal form: they are given by minors of the so-called extended Whittaker kernel, introduced earlier in a paper by Borodin and the author.
