Metaplectic Ice
Published • View PublicationBIB
Spherical Whittaker functions on the metaplectic n-fold cover of GL(r+1) over a nonarchimedean local field containing n distinct n-th roots of unity may be expressed as the partition functions of statistical mechanical systems that are variants of the six-vertex model. If n=1 then in view of the Casselman-Shalika formula this fact is related to Tokuyama's deformation of the Weyl character formula. It is shown that various properties of these Whittaker functions may be expressed in terms of the commutativity of row transfer matrices for the system. Potentially these properties (which are already proved by other methods, but very nontrivial) are amenable to proof by the Yang-Baxter equation.
Perfect state transfer, graph products and equitable partitions
Published in International Journal of Quantum Information 9(3):823-842, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
We describe new constructions of graphs which exhibit perfect state transfer on continuous-time quantum walks. Our constructions are based on variants of the double cones [BCMS09,ANOPRT10,ANOPRT09] and the Cartesian graph products (which includes the n-cube) [CDDEKL05]. Some of our results include: (1) If $G$ is a graph with perfect state transfer at time $t_{G}$, where $t_{G}\Spec(G) \subseteq \ZZπ$, and $H$ is a circulant with odd eigenvalues, their weak product $G \times H$ has perfect state transfer. Also, if $H$ is a regular graph with perfect state transfer at time $t_{H}$ and $G$ is a graph where $t_{H}|V_{H}|\Spec(G) \subseteq 2\ZZπ$, their lexicographic product $G[H]$ has perfect state transfer. (2) The double cone $\overline{K}_{2} + G$ on any connected graph $G$, has perfect state transfer if the weights of the cone edges are proportional to the Perron eigenvector of $G$. This generalizes results for double cone on regular graphs studied in [BCMS09,ANOPRT10,ANOPRT09]. (3) For an infinite family $\GG$ of regular graphs, there is a circulant connection so the graph $K_{1}+\GG\circ\GG+K_{1}$ has perfect state transfer. In contrast, no perfect state transfer exists if a complete bipartite connection is used (even in the presence of weights) [ANOPRT09]. We also describe a generalization of the path collapsing argument [CCDFGS03,CDDEKL05], which reduces questions about perfect state transfer to simpler (weighted) multigraphs, for graphs with equitable distance partitions.
A Bijection between Atomic Partitions and Unsplitable Partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18 (2011) #P7 • View PublicationBIB
In the study of the algebra $\mathrm{NCSym}$ of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables, Bergeron and Zabrocki found a free generating set consisting of power sum symmetric functions indexed by atomic partitions. On the other hand, Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki studied another free generating set of $\mathrm{NCSym}$ consisting of monomial symmetric functions indexed by unsplitable partitions. Can and Sagan raised the question of finding a bijection between atomic partitions and unsplitable partitions. In this paper, we provide such a bijection.

On Complexity of Isoperimetric Problems on Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is aimed to investigate some computational aspects of different isoperimetric problems on weighted trees. In this regard, we consider different connectivity parameters called {\it minimum normalized cuts}/{\it isoperimteric numbers} defined through taking minimum of the maximum or the mean of the normalized outgoing flows from a set of subdomains of vertices, where these subdomains constitute a {\it partition}/{\it subpartition}. Following the main result of [A. Daneshgar, {\it et. al.}, {\it On the isoperimetric spectrum of graphs and its approximations}, JCTB, (2010)], it is known that the isoperimetric number and the minimum normalized cut both can be described as $\{0,1\}$-optimization programs, where the latter one does {\it not} admit a relaxation to the reals. We show that the decision problem for the case of taking $k$-partitions and the maximum (called the max normalized cut problem {\rm NCP}$^M$) as well as the other two decision problems for the mean version (referred to as {\rm IPP}$^m$ and {\rm NCP}$^m$) are $NP$-complete problems. On the other hand, we show that the decision problem for the case of taking $k$-subpartitions and the maximum (called the max isoperimetric problem {\rm IPP}$^M$) can be solved in {\it linear time} for any weighted tree and any $k \geq 2$. Based on this fact, we provide polynomial time $O(k)$-approximation algorithms for all different versions of $k$th isoperimetric numbers considered. Moreover, when the number of partitions/subpartitions, $k$, is a fixed constant, as an extension of a result of B. Mohar (1989) for the case $k=2$ (usually referred to as the Cheeger constant), we prove that max and mean isoperimetric numbers of weighted trees as well as their max normalized cut can be computed in polynomial time. We also prove some hardness results for the case of simple unweighted graphs and trees.
Basic and degenerate pregeometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pairs $(Γ,G)$, where $Γ$ is a 'Buekenhout-Tits' pregeometry with all rank 2 truncations connected, and $G\leqslant\mathrm{Aut} Γ$ is transitive on the set of elements of each type. The family of such pairs is closed under forming quotients with respect to $G$-invariant type-refining partitions of the element set of $Γ$. We identify the 'basic' pairs (those that admit no non-degenerate quotients), and show, by studying quotients and direct decompositions, that the study of basic pregeometries reduces to examining those where the group $G$ is faithful and primitive on the set of elements of each type. We also study the special case of normal quotients, where we take quotients with respect to the orbits of a normal subgroup of $G$. There is a similar reduction for normal-basic pregeometries to those where $G$ is faithful and quasiprimitive on the set of elements of each type.

Noncrossing Linked Partitions and Large (3,2)-Motzkin Paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
Noncrossing linked partitions arise in the study of certain transforms in free probability theory. We explore the connection between noncrossing linked partitions and colored Motzkin paths. A (3,2)-Motzkin path can be viewed as a colored Motzkin path in the sense that there are three types of level steps and two types of down steps. A large (3,2)-Motzkin path is defined to be a (3,2)-Motzkin path for which there are only two types of level steps on the x-axis. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of noncrossing linked partitions of [n+1] and the set of large (3,2)-Motzkin paths of length n. In this setting, we get a simple explanation of the well-known relation between the large and the little Schroder numbers.

Discrete series representations and K multiplicities for U(p,q). User's guide
This document is a companion for the Maple program : Discrete series and K-types for U(p,q) available on:http://www.math.jussieu.fr/~vergne We explain an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of an irreducible representation of U(p)x U(q) in a discrete series of U(p,q). It is based on Blattner's formula. We recall the general mathematical background to compute Kostant partition functions via multidimensional residues, and we outline our algorithm. We also point out some properties of the piecewise polynomial functions describing multiplicities based on Paradan's results.

Young classes of permutations
We characterise those classes of permutations having the property that for every tableau shape either every permutation of that shape or no permutation of that shape belongs to the class. The characterisation is in terms of the dominance order for partitions (and their conjugates) and shows that for any such class there is a constant k such that no permutation in the class can contain both an increasing and a decreasing sequence of length k.

Enumeration of Restricted Partition Pairs and Permutation Pairs via 0-1 Tableaux
We use the 0-1 tableaux as a tool for enumerating permutations and partitions with restricted minima. The method used is extended for permutation pairs and partition pairs generated by a bipartite 0-1 tableaux.

The Orbifold Topological Vertex
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and we develop a topological vertex formalism for computing them. The basic combinatorial object is the orbifold vertex, a generating function for the number of 3D partitions asymptotic to three given 2D partitions and colored by representations of a finite Abelian group G acting on C^3. In the case where G=Z_n acting on C^3 with transverse A_{n-1} quotient singularities, we give an explicit formula for the vertex in terms of Schur functions. We discuss applications of our formalism to the Donaldson-Thomas Crepant Resolution Conjecture and to the orbifold Donaldson-Thomas/Gromov-Witten correspondence. We also explicitly compute the Donaldson-Thomas partition function for some simple orbifold geometries: the local football and the local BZ_2 gerbe.

Recently, Andrews, Hirschhorn and Sellers have proven congruences modulo 3 for four types of partitions using elementary series manipulations. In this paper, we generalize their congruences using arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.

Partitions and Coverings of Trees by Bounded-Degree Subtrees
This paper addresses the following questions for a given tree $T$ and integer $d\geq2$: (1) What is the minimum number of degree-$d$ subtrees that partition $E(T)$? (2) What is the minimum number of degree-$d$ subtrees that cover $E(T)$? We answer the first question by providing an explicit formula for the minimum number of subtrees, and we describe a linear time algorithm that finds the corresponding partition. For the second question, we present a polynomial time algorithm that computes a minimum covering. We then establish a tight bound on the number of subtrees in coverings of trees with given maximum degree and pathwidth. Our results show that pathwidth is the right parameter to consider when studying coverings of trees by degree-3 subtrees. We briefly consider coverings of general graphs by connected subgraphs of bounded degree.

Proximity Drawings of High-Degree Trees
Published in International J. of Computational Geometry and Applications 23:213-230, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
A drawing of a given (abstract) tree that is a minimum spanning tree of the vertex set is considered aesthetically pleasing. However, such a drawing can only exist if the tree has maximum degree at most 6. What can be said for trees of higher degree? We approach this question by supposing that a partition or covering of the tree by subtrees of bounded degree is given. Then we show that if the partition or covering satisfies some natural properties, then there is a drawing of the entire tree such that each of the given subtrees is drawn as a minimum spanning tree of its vertex set.

Crossings, Motzkin paths and Moments
Published in Discrete Mathematics 311(18-19) (2011), 2064--2078 • View PublicationBIB
Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng, and Kim, Stanton and Zeng introduced certain $q$-analogues of Laguerre and Charlier polynomials. The moments of these orthogonal polynomials have combinatorial models in terms of crossings in permutations and set partitions. The aim of this article is to prove simple formulas for the moments of the $q$-Laguerre and the $q$-Charlier polynomials, in the style of the Touchard-Riordan formula (which gives the moments of some $q$-Hermite polynomials, and also the distribution of crossings in matchings). Our method mainly consists in the enumeration of weighted Motzkin paths, which are naturally associated with the moments. Some steps are bijective, in particular we describe a decomposition of paths which generalises a previous construction of Penaud for the case of the Touchard-Riordan formula. There are also some non-bijective steps using basic hypergeometric series, and continued fractions or, alternatively, functional equations.

Geometric representations of linear codes
Published in Advances in Mathematics 282 (2015) 1-22 • View PublicationBIB
We say that a linear code C over a field F is triangular representable if there exists a two dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ such that C is a punctured code of the kernel ker $Δ$ of the incidence matrix of $Δ$ over F and there is a linear mapping between C and ker $Δ$ which is a bijection and maps minimal codewords to minimal codewords. We show that the linear codes over rationals and over GF(p), where p is a prime, are triangular representable. In the case of finite fields, we show that this representation determines the weight enumerator of C. We present one application of this result to the partition function of the Potts model. On the other hand, we show that there exist linear codes over any field different from rationals and GF(p), p prime, that are not triangular representable. We show that every construction of triangular representation fails on a very weak condition that a linear code and its triangular representation have to have the same dimension.

Partitions, rooks, and symmetric functions in noncommuting variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Π_n$ denote the set of all set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider two subsets of $Π_n$, one connected to rook theory and one associated with symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Let $\cE_n\sbeΠ_n$ be the subset of all partitions corresponding to an extendable rook (placement) on the upper-triangular board, $\cT_{n-1}$. Given $π\inΠ_m$ and $\si\inΠ_n$, define their {\it slash product\/} to be $π|\si=π\cup(\si+m)\inΠ_{m+n}$ where $\si+m$ is the partition obtained by adding $m$ to every element of every block of $\si$. Call $τ$ {\it atomic\/} if it can not be written as a nontrivial slash product and let $\cA_n\sbeΠ_n$ denote the subset of atomic partitions. Atomic partitions were first defined by Bergeron, Hohlweg, Rosas, and Zabrocki during their study of $NCSym$, the symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We show that, despite their very different definitions, $\cE_n=\cA_n$ for all $n\ge0$. Furthermore, we put an algebra structure on the formal vector space generated by all rook placements on upper triangular boards which makes it isomorphic to $NCSym$. We end with some remarks and an open problem.

The spectrum of an asymmetric annihilation process
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent work on nonequilibrium statistical physics, a certain Markovian exclusion model called an asymmetric annihilation process was studied by Ayyer and Mallick. In it they gave a precise conjecture for the eigenvalues (along with the multiplicities) of the transition matrix. They further conjectured that to each eigenvalue, there corresponds only one eigenvector. We prove the first of these conjectures by generalizing the original Markov matrix by introducing extra parameters, explicitly calculating its eigenvalues, and showing that the new matrix reduces to the original one by a suitable specialization. In addition, we outline a derivation of the partition function in the generalized model, which also reduces to the one obtained by Ayyer and Mallick in the original model.

We give a $q$-analogue of some binomial coefficient identities of Y. Sun [Electron. J. Combin. 17 (2010), #N20] as follows: {align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}{m+k\brack k}_{q^2}{m+1\brack n-2k}_{q} q^{n-2k\choose 2} &={m+n\brack n}_{q}, \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor n/4\rfloor}{m+k\brack k}_{q^4}{m+1\brack n-4k}_{q} q^{n-4k\choose 2} &=\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}(-1)^k{m+k\brack k}_{q^2}{m+n-2k\brack n-2k}_{q}, {align*} where ${n\brack k}_q$ stands for the $q$-binomial coefficient. We provide two proofs, one of which is combinatorial via partitions.

Trivariate monomial complete intersections and plane partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the homogeneous components U_r of the map on R = k[x,y,z]/(x^A, y^B, z^C) that multiplies by x + y + z. We prove a relationship between the Smith normal forms of submatrices of an arbitrary Toeplitz matrix using Schur polynomials, and use this to give a relationship between Smith normal form entries of U_r. We also give a bijective proof of an identity proven by J. Li and F. Zanello equating the determinant of the middle homogeneous component U_r when (A, B, C) = (a + b, a + c, b + c) to the number of plane partitions in an a by b by c box. Finally, we prove that, for certain vector subspaces of R, similar identities hold relating determinants to symmetry classes of plane partitions, in particular classes 3, 6, and 8.

Higher Order SPT-Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews' spt-function can be written as the difference between the second symmetrized crank and rank moment functions. Using the machinery of Bailey pairs a combinatorial interpretation is given for the difference between higher order symmetrized crank and rank moment functions. This implies an inequality between crank and rank moments that was only know previously for sufficiently large n and fixed order. This combinatorial interpretation is in terms of a weighted sum of partitions. A number of congruences for higher order spt-functions are derived.
