On the diagonal hooks of a symmetric partition
Using only a symmetric p-core partition and p-quotient, we give an explicit formula for the set of diagonal hook lengths of the associated symmetric partition.

Generating functions for plane overpartitions are obtained using various methods such as nonintersecting paths, RSK type algorithms and symmetric functions. We extend some of the generating functions to cylindric partitions. Also, we show that plane overpartitions correspond to certain domino tilings and we give some basic properties of this correspondence.
Asymptotics for rank and crank moments

Moments of the partition rank and crank statistics have been studied for their connections to combinatorial objects such as Durfee symbols, as well as for their connections to harmonic Maass forms. This paper proves a conjecture due to Bringmann and Mahlburg that refined a conjecture of Garvan. Garvan's conjecture states that the moments of the crank function are always larger than the moments of the rank function, even though the moments have the same main asymptotic term. The proof uses the Hardy-Ramanujan method to provide precise asymptotic estimates for rank and crank moments and their differences.
On the symmetry of the partition function of some square ice models

We consider the partition function Z(N;x_1,...,x_N,y_1,...,y_N) of the square ice model with domain wall boundary. We give a simple proof of the symmetry of Z with respect to all its variables when the global parameter a of the model is set to the special value a=exp(iπ/3). Our proof does not use any determinantal interpretation of Z and can be adapted to other situations (for examples to some symmetric ice models).
Symmetric functions, codes of partitions and the KP hierarchy

We consider an operator of Bernstein for symmetric functions, and give an explicit formula for its action on an arbitrary Schur function. This formula is given in a remarkably simple form when written in terms of some notation based on the code of a partition. As an application, we give a new and very simple proof of a classical result for the KP hierarchy, which involves the Plucker relations for Schur function coefficients in a tau function for the hierarchy. This proof is especially compact because of a restatement that we give for the Plucker relations that is symmetrical in terms of partition code notation.
Major Index for 01-Fillings of Moon Polyominoes

We propose a major index statistic on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes which, when specialized to certain shapes, reduces to the major index for permutations and set partitions. We consider the set F(M, s; A) of all 01-fillings of a moon polyomino M with given column sum s whose empty rows are A, and prove that this major index has the same distribution as the number of north-east chains, which are the natural extension of inversions (resp. crossings) for permutations (resp. set partitions). Hence our result generalizes the classical equidistribution results for the permutation statistics inv and maj. Two proofs are presented. The first is an algebraic one using generating functions, and the second is a bijection on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes in the spirit of Foata's second fundamental transformation on words and permutations.
On Partitions of Finite vector Spaces
In this note, we give a new necessary condition for the existence of non-trivial partitions of a finite vector space. Precisely, we prove that, if V is a finite vector space over a field of order q, then the number of the subspaces of minimum dimension t of a non-trivial partition of V is greater than or equal to q+t. Moreover, we give some extensions of a well known Beutelspacher-Heden's result on existence of T-partitions.
The Logic of Partitions: Introduction to the Dual of the Logic of Subsets

Modern categorical logic as well as the Kripke and topological models of intuitionistic logic suggest that the interpretation of ordinary "propositional" logic should in general be the logic of subsets of a given universe set. Partitions on a set are dual to subsets of a set in the sense of the category-theoretic duality of epimorphisms and monomorphisms--which is reflected in the duality between quotient objects and subobjects throughout algebra. If "propositional" logic is thus seen as the logic of subsets of a universe set, then the question naturally arises of a dual logic of partitions on a universe set. This paper is an introduction to that logic of partitions dual to classical subset logic. The paper goes from basic concepts up through the correctness and completeness theorems for a tableau system of partition logic.
Extension of One-Dimensional Proximity Regions to Higher Dimensions

Proximity maps and regions are defined based on the relative allocation of points from two or more classes in an area of interest and are used to construct random graphs called proximity catch digraphs (PCDs) which have applications in various fields. The simplest of such maps is the spherical proximity map which maps a point from the class of interest to a disk centered at the same point with radius being the distance to the closest point from the other class in the region. The spherical proximity map gave rise to class cover catch digraph (CCCD) which was applied to pattern classification. Furthermore for uniform data on the real line, the exact and asymptotic distribution of the domination number of CCCDs were analytically available. In this article, we determine some appealing properties of the spherical proximity map in compact intervals on the real line and use these properties as a guideline for defining new proximity maps in higher dimensions. Delaunay triangulation is used to partition the region of interest in higher dimensions. Furthermore, we introduce the auxiliary tools used for the construction of the new proximity maps, as well as some related concepts that will be used in the investigation and comparison of them and the resulting graphs. We characterize the geometry invariance of PCDs for uniform data. We also provide some newly defined proximity maps in higher dimensions as illustrative examples.

Partitioning a graph into defensive k-alliances

A defensive $k$-alliance in a graph is a set $S$ of vertices with the property that every vertex in $S$ has at least $k$ more neighbors in $S$ than it has outside of $S$. A defensive $k$-alliance $S$ is called global if it forms a dominating set. In this paper we study the problem of partitioning the vertex set of a graph into (global) defensive $k$-alliances. The (global) defensive $k$-alliance partition number of a graph $Γ=(V,E)$, ($ψ_{k}^{gd}(Γ)$) $ψ_k^{d}(Γ)$, is defined to be the maximum number of sets in a partition of $V$ such that each set is a (global) defensive $k$-alliance. We obtain tight bounds on $ψ_k^{d}(Γ)$ and $ψ_{k}^{gd}(Γ)$ in terms of several parameters of the graph including the order, size, maximum and minimum degree, the algebraic connectivity and the isoperimetric number. Moreover, we study the close relationships that exist among partitions of $Γ_1\times Γ_2$ into (global) defensive $(k_1+k_2)$-alliances and partitions of $Γ_i$ into (global) defensive $k_i$-alliances, $i\in \{1,2\}$.

For a subfamily of multiplicative measures on integer partitions we give conditions for properly rescaled associated Young diagrams to converge in probability to a certain deterministic curve named the limit shape of partitions. We provide explicit formulas for the scaling function and the limit shape covering some known and some new examples.

Fully packed loop models describe the statistics of closely packed nested polygons on the square lattice. Many exact results can be obtained for these models, even for finite geometries, using their close relationship to alternating-sign matrices and the solvable six-vertex and O(n=1) lattice models. Some results for the exact partition function of fully packed loop models on various finite geometries are briefly reviewed, as well as the well-known order-disorder bulk phase transition present in these models.
A detailed study is presented of the distribution of boundary nests of polygons in fully packed loop models with mirror or rotational symmetry. The probability distribution function of such nests, as well as the average number of nests, are obtained analytically, albeit conjecturally. It is further shown that fully packed loop models undergo another phase transition as a function of the boundary nest fugacity. At criticality, we derive a scaling form for the nest distribution function which displays an unusual non-Gaussian cubic exponential behaviour.
Growth Diagrams for the Schubert Multiplication

We present a partial generalization to Schubert calculus on flag varieties of the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule, in its version based on Schuetzenberger's jeu de taquin. More precisely, we describe certain structure constants expressing the product of a Schubert and a Schur polynomial. We use a generalization of Fomin's growth diagrams (for chains in Young's lattice of partitions) to chains of permutations in the so-called k-Bruhat order. Our work is based on the recent thesis of Beligan, in which he generalizes the classical plactic structure on words to chains in certain intervals in k-Bruhat order. Potential applications of our work include the generalization of the S_3-symmetric Littlewood-Richardson rule due to Thomas and Yong, which is based on Fomin's growth diagrams.

n this paper I introduce a new description of the crystal $B(Λ_0)$ of $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_\ell}$. As in the Misra-Miwa model of $B(Λ_0)$, the nodes of this crystal are indexed by partitions and the $i$-arrows correspond to adding a box of residue $i$. I then show that the two models are equivalent by interpreting the operation of regularization introduced by James as a crystal isomorphism.

We address a number of conjectures about the ground state O(1) loop model, computing in particular two infinite series of partial sums of its entries and relating them to the enumeration of plane partitions. Our main tool is the use of integral formulae for a polynomial solution of the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation.
Non-crossing linked partitions, the partial order << on NC(n), and the S-transform

The paper establishes a connection between two recent combinatorial developments in free probability: the non-crossing linked partitions introduced by Dykema in 2007 to study the S-transform, and the partial order << on NC(n) introduced by Belinschi and Nica in 2008 in order to study relations between free and Boolean probability. More precisely, one has a canonical bijection between NCL(n) (the set of all non-crossing linked partitions of {1, ..., n}) and the set {(p,q) | p,q in NC(n), p<<q}. As a consequence of this bijection, one gets an alternative description of Dykema's formula expressing the moments of a noncommutative random variable a in terms of the coefficients of the reciprocal S-transform 1/S_a. Moreover, due to the Boolean features of <<, this formula can be simplified to a form which resembles the moment-cumulant formula from c-free probability.

Inspired by the study of community structure in connection networks, we introduce the graph polynomial $Q(G;x,y)$, the bivariate generating function which counts the number of connected components in induced subgraphs.
We give a recursive definition of $Q(G;x,y)$ using vertex deletion, vertex contraction and deletion of a vertex together with its neighborhood and prove a universality property. We relate $Q(G;x,y)$ to other known graph invariants and graph polynomials, among them partition functions, the Tutte polynomial, the independence and matching polynomials, and the universal edge elimination polynomial introduced by I. Averbouch, B. Godlin and J.A. Makowsky (2008).
We show that $Q(G;x,y)$ is vertex reconstructible in the sense of Kelly and Ulam, discuss its use in computing residual connectedness reliability. Finally we show that the computation of $Q(G;x,y)$ is $\sharp \mathbf{P}$-hard, but Fixed Parameter Tractable for graphs of bounded tree-width and clique-width.
