Rumours spread slowly in a small world spatial network
Published • View PublicationBIB
Rumour spreading is a protocol for modelling the spread of information through a network via user-to-user interaction. The Spatial Preferred Attachment (SPA) model is a random graph model for complex networks: vertices are placed in a metric space, and the link probability depends on the metric distance between vertices, and on their degree. We show that the SPA model typically produces graphs that have small effective diameter, i.e. $O(\log^2 n)$, while rumour spreading is relatively slow, namely polynomial in $n$.

Deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithms for partition functions and graph polynomials
Published in SIAM J. Comput., 46(6), 1893-1919 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show a new way of constructing deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithms for computing complex-valued evaluations of a large class of graph polynomials on bounded degree graphs. In particular, our approach works for the Tutte polynomial and independence polynomial, as well as partition functions of complex-valued spin and edge-coloring models. More specifically, we define a large class of graph polynomials $\mathcal C$ and show that if $p\in \cal C$ and there is a disk $D$ centered at zero in the complex plane such that $p(G)$ does not vanish on $D$ for all bounded degree graphs $G$, then for each $z$ in the interior of $D$ there exists a deterministic polynomial-time approximation algorithm for evaluating $p(G)$ at $z$. This gives an explicit connection between absence of zeros of graph polynomials and the existence of efficient approximation algorithms, allowing us to show new relationships between well-known conjectures. Our work builds on a recent line of work initiated by. Barvinok, which provides a new algorithmic approach besides the existing Markov chain Monte Carlo method and the correlation decay method for these types of problems.

Orbit Dirichlet series and multiset permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study Dirichlet series enumerating orbits of Cartesian products of maps whose orbit distributions are modelled on the distributions of finite index subgroups of free abelian groups of finite rank. We interpret Euler factors of such orbit Dirichlet series in terms of generating polynomials for statistics on multiset permutations, viz. descent and major index, generalizing Carlitz's $q$-Eulerian polynomials. We give two main applications of this combinatorial interpretation. Firstly, we establish local functional equations for the Euler factors of the orbit Dirichlet series under consideration. Secondly, we determine these (global) Dirichlet series' abscissae of convergence and establish some meromorphic continuation beyond these abscissae. As a corollary, we describe the asymptotics of the relevant orbit growth sequences. For Cartesian products of more than two maps we establish a natural boundary for meromorphic continuation. For products of two maps, we prove the existence of such a natural boundary subject to a combinatorial conjecture.

Eulerian polynomials, perfect matchings and Stirling permutations of the second kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we first present combinatorial proofs of a kind of expansions of the Eulerian polynomials of types A and B, and then we introduce Stirling permutations of the second kind. In particular, we count Stirling permutations of the second kind by their cycle ascent plateaus, fixed points and cycles.

Demazure flags, $q$--Fibonacci polynomials and hypergeometric series
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 5 (2018), no. 1, Paper No. 12, 34 pp • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of finite--dimensional representations of the hyperspecial parabolic subalgebra of the twisted affine Lie algebra of type $\tt A_2^{(2)}$. We prove that these modules admit a decreasing filtration whose sections are isomorphic to stable Demazure modules in an integrable highest weight module of sufficiently large level. In particular, we show that any stable level $m'$ Demazure module admits a filtration by level $m$ Demazure modules for all $m\ge m'$. We define the graded and weighted generating functions which encode the multiplicity of a given Demazure module and establish a recursive formulae. In the case when $m'=1,2$ and $m=2,3$ we determine these generating functions completely and show that they define hypergeoemetric series and that they are related to the $q$--Fibonacci polynomials defined by Carlitz.
Uniform measures on braid monoids and dual braid monoids
Published in Journal of Algebra, Elsevier, Volume 473, March 2017, pages 627-666 • View PublicationBIB
We aim at studying the asymptotic properties of typical positive braids, respectively positive dual braids. Denoting by $μ_k$ the uniform distribution on positive (dual) braids of length $k$, we prove that the sequence $(μ_k)_k$ converges to a unique probability measure $μ_{\infty}$ on infinite positive (dual) braids. The key point is that the limiting measure $μ_{\infty}$ has a Markovian structure which can be described explicitly using the combinatorial properties of braids encapsulated in the Möbius polynomial. As a by-product, we settle a conjecture by Gebhardt and Tawn (J. Algebra, 2014) on the shape of the Garside normal form of large uniform braids.

A two-sided analogue of the Coxeter complex
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any Coxeter system $(W,S)$ of rank $n$, we introduce an abstract boolean complex (simplicial poset) of dimension $2n-1$ that contains the Coxeter complex as a relative subcomplex. Faces are indexed by triples $(I,w,J)$, where $I$ and $J$ are subsets of the set $S$ of simple generators, and $w$ is a minimal length representative for the parabolic double coset $W_I w W_J$. There is exactly one maximal face for each element of the group $W$. The complex is shellable and thin, which implies the complex is a sphere for the finite Coxeter groups. In this case, a natural refinement of the $h$-polynomial is given by the "two-sided" $W$-Eulerian polynomial, i.e., the generating function for the joint distribution of left and right descents in $W$.
Total domination polynomials of graphs
Given a graph $G$, a total dominating set $D_t$ is a vertex set that every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to some vertices of $D_t$ and let $d_t(G,i)$ be the number of all total dominating sets with size $i$. The total domination polynomial, defined as $D_t(G,x)=\sum\limits_{i=1}^{| V(G)|} d_t(G,i)x^i$, recently has been one of the considerable extended research in the field of domination theory. In this paper, we obtain the vertex-reduction and edge-reduction formulas of total domination polynomials. As consequences, we give the total domination polynomials for paths and cycles. Additionally, we determine the sharp upper bounds of total domination polynomials for trees and characterize the corresponding graphs attaining such bounds. Finally, we use the reduction-formulas to investigate the relations between vertex sets and total domination polynomials in $G$.
The Wiener Index and the Hosoya Polynomial of the Jahangir Graphs

Let G be a simple connected graph having vertex set V and edge set E. The vertex-set and edge-set of G denoted by V(G) and E(G), respectively. The length of the smallest path between two vertices is called the distance. Mathematical chemistry is the area of research engaged in new application of mathematics in chemistry. In mathematics chemistry, we have many topological indices for any molecular graph, that they are invariant on the graph automorphism. In this research paper, we computing the Wiener index and the Hosoya polynomial of the Jahangir graphs $J_5,m$ for all integer number $m \geq 3$.

Whitney numbers of arrangements via measure concentration of intrinsic volumes
We verify the Rota-Heron-Welsh conjecture for matroids realizable as c-arrangements: the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the associated matroid are log-concave. This family of matroids strictly contains that of complex hyperplane arrangements. Our proof combines the study of intrinsic volumes of certain extensions of arrangements and the Levy--Milman measure concentration phenomenon on realization spaces of arrangements.

Upper bounds for sunflower-free sets
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, Volume 5, 2017, e15 • View PublicationBIB
A collection of $k$ sets is said to form a $k$-sunflower, or $Δ$-system, if the intersection of any two sets from the collection is the same, and we call a family of sets $\mathcal{F}$ sunflower-free if it contains no sunflowers. Following the recent breakthrough of Ellenberg and Gijswijt and Croot, Lev and Pach we apply the polynomial method directly to Erdős-Szemerédi sunflower problem and prove that any sunflower-free family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ has size at most \[ |\mathcal{F}|\leq3n\sum_{k\leq n/3}\binom{n}{k}\leq\left(\frac{3}{2^{2/3}}\right)^{n(1+o(1))}. \] We say that a set $A\subset(\mathbb Z/D \mathbb Z)^{n}=\{1,2,\dots,D\}^{n}$ for $D>2$ is sunflower-free if every distinct triple $x,y,z\in A$ there exists a coordinate $i$ where exactly two of $x_{i},y_{i},z_{i}$ are equal. Using a version of the polynomial method with characters $χ:\mathbb{Z}/D\mathbb{Z}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ instead of polynomials, we show that any sunflower-free set $A\subset(\mathbb Z/D \mathbb Z)^{n}$ has size \[ |A|\leq c_{D}^{n} \] where $c_{D}=\frac{3}{2^{2/3}}(D-1)^{2/3}$. This can be seen as making further progress on a possible approach to proving the Erdős-Rado sunflower conjecture, which by the work of Alon, Sphilka and Umans is equivalent to proving that $c_{D}\leq C$ for some constant $C$ independent of $D$.

A random walk on the symmetric group generated by random involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The involution walk is the random walk on $S_n$ generated by involutions with a binomially distributed with parameter $1-p$ number of $2$-cycles. This is a parallelization of the transposition walk. The involution walk is shown in this paper to mix for $\frac{1}{2} \leq p \leq 1$ fixed, $n$ sufficiently large in between $\log_{1/p}(n)$ steps and $\log_{2/(1+p)}(n)$ steps. The paper introduces a new technique for finding eigenvalues of random walks on the symmetric group generated by many conjugacy classes using the character polynomial for the characters of the representations of the symmetric group. Monotonicity relations used in the bound also give after sufficient time the likelihood order, the asymptotic order from most likely to least likely permutation. The walk was introduced to study a conjecture about a random walk on the unitary group from the information theory of black holes.
Koornwinder polynomials and the stationary multi-species asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries

We prove that the normalisation of the stationary state of the multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (mASEP) is a specialisation of a Koornwinder polynomial. As a corollary we obtain that the normalisation of mASEP factorises as a product over multiple copies of the two-species ASEP.

A universality theorem for nonnegative matrix factorizations
Let $A$ be a matrix with nonnegative real entries. A nonnegative factorization of size $k$ is a representation of $A$ as a sum of $k$ nonnegative rank-one matrices. The space of all such factorizations is a bounded semialgebraic set, and we prove that spaces arising in this way are universal. More presicely, we show that every bounded semialgebraic set $U$ is rationally equivalent to the set of nonnegative size-$k$ factorizations of some matrix $A$ up to a permutation of matrices in the factorization. We prove that, if $U\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is given as the zero locus of a polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$, then such a pair $(A,k)$ can be computed in polynomial time. This result gives a complete description of the algorithmic complexity of nonnegative rank, and it also allows one to solve the problem of Cohen and Rothblum on nonnegative factorizations restricted to matrices over different subfields of $\mathbb{R}$.
New Behavior in Legal Decompositions Arising from Non-positive Linear Recurrences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Zeckendorf's theorem states every positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. This result has been generalized to many sequences $\{a_n\}$ arising from an integer positive linear recurrence, each of which has a corresponding notion of a legal decomposition. Previous work proved the number of summands in decompositions of $m \in [a_n, a_{n+1})$ becomes normally distributed as $n\to\infty$, and the individual gap measures associated to each $m$ converge to geometric random variables, when the leading coefficient in the recurrence is positive. We explore what happens when this assumption is removed in two special sequences. In one we regain all previous results, including unique decomposition; in the other the number of legal decompositions exponentially grows and the natural choice for the legal decomposition (the greedy algorithm) only works approximately 92.6\% of the time (though a slight modification always works). We find a connection between the two sequences, which explains why the distribution of the number of summands and gaps between summands behave the same in the two examples. In the course of our investigations we found a new perspective on dealing with roots of polynomials associated to the characteristic polynomials. This allows us to remove the need for the detailed technical analysis of their properties which greatly complicated the proofs of many earlier results in the subject, as well as handle new cases beyond the reach of existing techniques.

Generalizations of Joints Problem
We generalize the joints problem to sets of varieties and prove almost sharp bound on the number of joints. As a special case, given a set of $N$ $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^6$, the number of points at which three $2$-planes intersect and span $\mathbb{R}^6$ is at most $CN^{3/2+ε}$. We also get almost sharp bound on the number of joints with multiplicities. The main tools are polynomial partitioning and induction on dimension.

Dual wavefunction of the Felderhof model
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 1235-1263 (107) 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Felderhof free-fermion six-vertex model, whose wavefunction recently turned out to possess rich combinatorial structure of the Schur polynomials. We investigate the dual version of the wavefunction in this paper, which seems to be a harder object to analyze. We evaluate the dual wavefunction in two ways. First, we give the exact correspondence between the dual wavefunction and the Schur polynomials, for which two proofs are given. Next, we make a microscopic analysis and express the dual wavefunction in terms of strict Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern. As a consequence of these two ways of evaluation of the dual wavefunction, we obtain a dual version of the Tokuyama combinatorial formula for the Schur polynomials. We also give a generalization of the correspondence between the dual wavefunction of the Felderhof model and the factorial Schur polynomials.

Robust Tverberg and colorful Carathéodory results via random choice
We use the probabilistic method to obtain versions of the colorful Carathéodory theorem and Tverberg's theorem with tolerance. In particular, we give bounds for the smallest integer $N=N(t,d,r)$ such that for any $N$ points in $R^d$, there is a partition of them into $r$ parts for which the following condition holds: after removing any $t$ points from the set, the convex hulls of what is left in each part intersect. We prove the bound $N=rt+O(\sqrt{t})$ for fixed $r,d$ which is polynomial in each parameters. Our bounds extend to colorful versions of Tverberg's theorem, as well as Reay-type variations of this theorem.

A kind of orthogonal polynomials and related identities

In this paper we introduce the polynomials $\{d_n^{(r)}(x)\}$ and $\{D_n^{(r)}(x)\}$ given by $d_n^{(r)}(x)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{x+r+k}k\binom{x-r}{n-k} \ (n\ge 0)$, $D_0^{(r)}(x)=1,\ D_1^{(r)}(x)=x$ and $D_{n+1}^{(r)}(x)=xD_n^{(r)}(x)-n(n+2r)D_{n-1}^{(r)}(x)\ (n\ge 1).$ We show that $\{D_n^{(r)}(x)\}$ are orthogonal polynomials for $r>-\frac 12$, and establish many identities for $\{d_n^{(r)}(x)\}$ and $\{D_n^{(r)}(x)\}$, especially obtain a formula for $d_n^{(r)}(x)^2$ and the linearization formulas for $d_m^{(r)}(x)d_n^{(r)}(x)$ and $D_m^{(r)}(x)D_n^{(r)}(x)$. As an application we extend recent work of Sun and Guo.
A width parameter useful for chordal and co-comparability graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate new graph classes of bounded mim-width, strictly extending interval graphs and permutation graphs. The graphs $K_t \boxminus K_t$ and $K_t \boxminus S_t$ are graphs obtained from the disjoint union of two cliques of size $t$, and one clique of size $t$ and one independent set of size $t$ respectively, by adding a perfect matching. We prove that : (1) interval graphs are $(K_3\boxminus S_3)$-free chordal graphs; and $(K_t\boxminus S_t)$-free chordal graphs have mim-width at most $t-1$, (2) permutation graphs are $(K_3\boxminus K_3)$-free co-comparability graphs; and $(K_t\boxminus K_t)$-free co-comparability graphs have mim-width at most $t-1$, (3) chordal graphs and co-comparability graphs have unbounded mim-width in general. We obtain several algorithmic consequences; for instance, while Minimum Dominating Set is NP-complete on chordal graphs, it can be solved in time $n^{\mathcal{O}(t)}$ on $(K_t\boxminus S_t)$-free chordal graphs. The third statement strengthens a result of Belmonte and Vatshelle stating that either those classes do not have constant mim-width or a decomposition with constant mim-width cannot be computed in polynomial time unless $P=NP$. We generalize these ideas to bigger graph classes. We introduce a new width parameter sim-width, of stronger modelling power than mim-width, by making a small change in the definition of mim-width. We prove that chordal graphs and co-comparability graphs have sim-width at most 1. We investigate a way to bound mim-width for graphs of bounded sim-width by excluding $K_t\boxminus K_t$ and $K_t\boxminus S_t$ as induced minors or induced subgraphs, and give algorithmic consequences. Lastly, we show that circle graphs have unbounded sim-width, and thus also unbounded mim-width.
