Semidefinite bounds for nonbinary codes based on quadruples
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography, 84 (1) (2017), 87-100 • View PublicationBIB
For nonnegative integers $q,n,d$, let $A_q(n,d)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a code of length $n$ over an alphabet $[q]$ with $q$ letters and with minimum distance at least $d$. We consider the following upper bound on $A_q(n,d)$. For any $k$, let $\CC_k$ be the collection of codes of cardinality at most $k$. Then $A_q(n,d)$ is at most the maximum value of $\sum_{v\in[q]^n}x(\{v\})$, where $x$ is a function $\CC_4\to R_+$ such that $x(\emptyset)=1$ and $x(C)=0$ if $C$ has minimum distance less than $d$, and such that the $\CC_2\times\CC_2$ matrix $(x(C\cup C'))_{C,C'\in\CC_2}$ is positive semidefinite. By the symmetry of the problem, we can apply representation theory to reduce the problem to a semidefinite programming problem with order bounded by a polynomial in $n$. It yields the new upper bounds $A_4(6,3)\leq 176$, $A_4(7,4)\leq 155$, $A_5(7,4)\leq 489$, and $A_5(7,5)\leq 87$.
Metric Dimension of Bounded Tree-length Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of resolving sets in a graph was introduced by Slater (1975) and Harary and Melter (1976) as a way of uniquely identifying every vertex in a graph. A set of vertices in a graph is a resolving set if for any pair of vertices x and y there is a vertex in the set which has distinct distances to x and y. A smallest resolving set in a graph is called a metric basis and its size, the metric dimension of the graph. The problem of computing the metric dimension of a graph is a well-known NP-hard problem and while it was known to be polynomial time solvable on trees, it is only recently that efforts have been made to understand its computational complexity on various restricted graph classes. In recent work, Foucaud et al. (2015) showed that this problem is NP-complete even on interval graphs. They complemented this result by also showing that it is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) parameterized by the metric dimension of the graph. In this work, we show that this FPT result can in fact be extended to all graphs of bounded tree-length. This includes well-known classes like chordal graphs, AT-free graphs and permutation graphs. We also show that this problem is FPT parameterized by the modular-width of the input graph.

Improved Bounds for the Excluded Grid Theorem
We study the Excluded Grid Theorem of Robertson and Seymour. This is a fundamental result in graph theory, that states that there is some function $f: Z^+\rightarrow Z^+$, such that for all integers $g>0$, every graph of treewidth at least $f(g)$ contains the $(g\times g)$-grid as a minor. Until recently, the best known upper bounds on $f$ were super-exponential in $g$. A recent work of Chekuri and Chuzhoy provided the first polynomial bound, by showing that treewidth $f(g)=O(g^{98}\operatorname{poly}\log g)$ is sufficient to ensure the existence of the $(g\times g)$-grid minor in any graph. In this paper we improve this bound to $f(g)=O(g^{19}\operatorname{poly}\log g)$. We introduce a number of new techniques, including a conceptually simple and almost entirely self-contained proof of the theorem that achieves a polynomial bound on $f(g)$.

A convolution formula for Tutte polynomials of arithmetic matroids and other combinatorial structures
In this note we generalize the convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Etienne-Las Vergnas to a more general setting that includes both arithmetic matroids and delta-matroids. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of two positivity results for pseudo-arithmetic matroids and a combinatorial interpretation of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial at infinitely many points in terms of arithmetic flows and colorings. We also exhibit connections with a decomposition of Dahmen-Micchelli spaces and lattice point counting in zonotopes.

Spanning Trees and Mahler Measure
The complexity of a finite connected graph is its number of spanning trees; for a non-connected graph it is the product of complexities of its connected components. If $G$ is an infinite graph with cofinite free ${\mathbb Z}^d$-symmetry, then the logarithmic Mahler measure $m(Δ)$ of its Laplacian polynomial $Δ$ is the exponential growth rate of the complexity of finite quotients of $G$. It is bounded below by $m(Δ({\mathbb G}_d))$, where ${\mathbb G}_d$ is the grid graph of dimension $d$. The growth rates $m(Δ({\mathbb G}_d))$ are asymptotic to $\log 2d$ as $d$ tends to infinity. If $m(Δ(G))\ne 0$, then $m(Δ(G)) \ge \log 2$. An application to determinant growth rates of families of alternating links arising from planar graphs is given.

Graph parameters from symplectic group invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce, and characterize, a class of graph parameters obtained from tensor invariants of the symplectic group. These parameters are similar to partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207-227]. Yet they give a completely different class of graph invariants. We moreover show that certain evaluations of the cycle partition polynomial, as defined by Martin [P. Martin, Enumérations eulériennes dans les multigraphes et invariants de Tutte-Grothendieck, Diss. Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble-INPG; Université Joseph-Fourier-Grenoble I, 1977], give examples of graph parameters that can be obtained this way.

Proof of some divisibility results on sums involving binomial coefficients

By using the Rodriguez-Villegas-Mortenson supercongruences, we prove four supercongruences on sums involving binomial coefficients, which were originally conjectured by Sun. We also confirm a related conjecture of Guo on integer-valued polynomials.

$L^q$ norms of Fekete and related polynomials
A Littlewood polynomial is a polynomial in $\mathbb{C}[z]$ having all of its coefficients in $\{-1,1\}$. There are various old unsolved problems, mostly due to Littlewood and Erdős, that ask for Littlewood polynomials that provide a good approximation to a function that is constant on the complex unit circle, and in particular have small $L^q$ norm on the complex unit circle. We consider the Fekete polynomials \[ f_p(z)=\sum_{j=1}^{p-1}(j\mid p)\,z^j, \] where $p$ is an odd prime and $(\,\cdot\mid p)$ is the Legendre symbol (so that $z^{-1}f_p(z)$ is a Littlewood polynomial). We give explicit and recursive formulas for the limit of the ratio of $L^q$ and $L^2$ norm of $f_p(z)$ when $q$ is an even positive integer and $p\to\infty$. To our knowledge, these are the first results that give these limiting values for specific sequences of nontrivial Littlewood polynomials and infinitely many $q$. Similar results are given for polynomials obtained by cyclically permuting the coefficients of Fekete polynomials and for Littlewood polynomials whose coefficients are obtained from additive characters of finite fields. These results vastly generalise earlier results on the $L^4$ norm of these polynomials.
On the interplay between embedded graphs and delta-matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The mutually enriching relationship between graphs and matroids has motivated discoveries in both fields. In this paper, we exploit the similar relationship between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. There are well-known connections between geometric duals of plane graphs and duals of matroids. We obtain analogous connections for various types of duality in the literature for graphs in surfaces of higher genus and delta-matroids. Using this interplay, we establish a rough structure theorem for delta-matroids that are twists of matroids, we translate Petrie duality on ribbon graphs to loop complementation on delta-matroids, and we prove that ribbon graph polynomials, such as the Penrose polynomial, the characteristic polynomial, and the transition polynomial, are in fact delta-matroidal. We also express the Penrose polynomial as a sum of characteristic polynomials.

Geometry of infinite planar maps with high degrees
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 22 (2017), no. 35 • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry of infinite random Boltzmann planar maps with vertices of high degree. These correspond to the duals of the Boltzmann maps associated to a critical weight sequence $(q_{k})_{ k \geq 0}$ for the faces with polynomial decay $k^{-a}$ with $a \in ( 3/2, 5/2)$ which have been studied by Le Gall & Miermont as well as by Borot, Bouttier & Guitter. We show the existence of a phase transition for the geometry of these maps at $a = 2$. In the dilute phase corresponding to $a \in (2, 5/2)$ we prove that the volume of the ball of radius $r$ (for the graph distance) is of order $r^{\mathsf{d}}$ with $\mathsf{d}= (a-1/2)/(a-2)$, and we provide distributional scaling limits for the volume and perimeter process. In the dense phase corresponding to $a \in (3/2,2)$ the volume of the ball of radius $r$ is exponential in $r$. We also study the first-passage percolation (FPP) distance with exponential edge weights and show in particular that in the dense phase the FPP distance between the origin and infinity is finite. The latter implies in addition that the random lattices in the dense phase are transient. The proofs rely on the recent peeling process introduced in arXiv:1506.01590 and use ideas of arXiv:1412.5509 in the dilute phase.

A Combinatorial Approach to the Symmetry of $q,t$-Catalan Numbers
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math (SIDMA). 32 (2018) no.1, 191--232 • View PublicationBIB
The \emph{$q,t$-Catalan numbers} $C_n(q,t)$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ that reduce to the ordinary Catalan numbers when $q=t=1$. These polynomials have important connections to representation theory, algebraic geometry, and symmetric functions. Haglund and Haiman discovered combinatorial formulas for $C_n(q,t)$ as weighted sums of Dyck paths (or equivalently, integer partitions contained in a staircase shape). This paper undertakes a combinatorial investigation of the joint symmetry property $C_n(q,t)=C_n(t,q)$. We conjecture some structural decompositions of Dyck objects into "mutually opposite" subcollections that lead to a bijective explanation of joint symmetry in certain cases. A key new idea is the construction of infinite chains of partitions that are independent of $n$ but induce the joint symmetry for all $n$ simultaneously. Using these methods, we prove combinatorially that for $0\leq k\leq 9$ and all $n$, the terms in $C_n(q,t)$ of total degree $\binom{n}{2}-k$ have the required symmetry property.

Some results on an algebro-geometric condition on graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Paolo Aluffi, inspired by an algebro-geometric problem, asked when the Kirchhoff polynomial of a graph is in the Jacobian ideal of the Kirchhoff polynomial of the same graph with one edge deleted. We give some results on which graph-edge pairs have this property. In particular we show that multiple edges can be reduced to double edges, we characterize which edges of wheel graphs satisfy the property, we consider a stronger condition which guarantees the property for any parallel join, and we find a class of series-parallel graphs with the property.

Statistical properties of eigenvalues of Laplace-Beltrami operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the eigenvalues of a Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on the set of the symmetric polynomials, where the eigenvalues are expressed in terms of partitions of integers. By assigning partitions with the restricted uniform measure, the restricted Jack measure, the uniform measure or the Plancherel measure, we prove that the global distribution of the eigenvalues is asymptotically a new distribution $μ$, the Gamma distribution, the Gumbel distribution and the Tracy-Widom distribution, respectively. An explicit representation of $μ$ is obtained by a function of independent random variables. We also derive an independent result on random partitions itself: a law of large numbers for the restricted uniform measure. Two open problems are also asked.

Holonomic Tools for Basic Hypergeometric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
With the exception of q-hypergeometric summation, the use of computer algebra packages implementing Zeilberger's "holonomic systems approach" in a broader mathematical sense is less common in the field of q-series and basic hypergeometric functions. A major objective of this article is to popularize the usage of such tools also in these domains. Concrete case studies showing software in action introduce to the basic techniques. An application highlight is a new computer-assisted proof of the celebrated Ismail-Zhang formula, an important q-analog of a classical expansion formula of plane waves in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials.
The Real-rootedness of Generalized Narayana Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we prove the real-rootedness of two classes of generalized Narayana polynomials: one arising as the $h$-polynomials of the generalized associahedron associated to the finite Weyl groups, the other arising in the study of the infinite log-concavity of the Boros-Moll polynomials. For the former, Brändén has already proved that these $h$-polynomials have only real zeros. We establish certain recurrence relations for the two classes of Narayana polynomials, from which we derive the real-rootedness. To prove the real-rootedness, we use a sufficient condition, due to Liu and Wang, to determine whether two polynomials have interlaced zeros. The recurrence relations are verified with the help of the Mathematica package \textit{HolonomicFunctions}.

Expansion of polynomial Lie group integrals in terms of certain maps on surfaces, and factorizations of permutations
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50 075201 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
Using the diagrammatic approach to integrals over Gaussian random matrices, we find a representation for polynomial Lie group integrals as infinite sums over certain maps on surfaces. The maps involved satisfy a specific condition: they have some marked vertices, and no closed walks that avoid these vertices. We also formulate our results in terms of permutations, arriving at new kinds of factorization problems.

Delta-matroids and Vassiliev invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Vassiliev (finite type) invariants of knots can be described in terms of weight systems. These are functions on chord diagrams satisfying so-called 4-term relations. In the study of the sl2 weight system, it was shown that its value on a chord diagram depends on the intersection graph of the diagram rather than on the diagram itself. Moreover, it was shown that the value of this weight system on an intersection graph depends on the cy- cle matroid of the graph rather than on the graph itself. This result arose the question whether there is a natural way to introduce a 4-term relation on the space spanned by matroids, similar to the one for graphs. It happened however that the answer is negative: there are graphs having isomorphic cycle matroids such that applying the "second Vassiliev move" to a pair of corresponding vertices a;b of the graphs we obtain two graphs with nonisomorphic matroids. The goal of the present paper is to show that the situation is different for binary delta-matroids: one can define both the first and the second Vassiliev moves for binary delta-matroids and introduce a 4-term relation for them in such a way that the mapping taking a chord diagram to its delta-matroid respects the corresponding 4-term relations. Moreover, this mapping admits a natural extension to chord diagrams on several circles, which correspond to singular links. Delta-matroids were introduced by A. Bouchet for the purpose of studying embedded graphs, whence their relationship with (multiloop) chord diagrams is by no means unexpected. Some evidence for the existence of such a relationship can be found, for example, the Tutte polynomial for embedded graphs has been introduced. It was shown that this polynomial depends on the delta-matroid of the embedded graph rather than the graph itself and satises the Vassilev 4-term relation.
Minimum distance functions of complete intersections
Published in J. Algebra Appl. 17 (2018), no. 11, 1850204 (22 pages) • View PublicationBIB
We study the footprint function, with respect to a monomial order, of complete intersection graded ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field. For graded ideals of dimension one, whose initial ideal is a complete intersection, we give a formula for the footprint function and a sharp lower bound for the corresponding minimum distance function. This allows us to recover a formula for the minimum distance of an affine cartesian code and the fact that in this case the minimum distance and the footprint functions coincide. Then we present an extension of a result of Alon and Füredi, about coverings of the cube $\{0,1\}^n$ by affine hyperplanes, in terms of the regularity of a vanishing ideal.

An elliptic extension of the general product formula for augmented rook boards
Published in Europ. J. Combin 58 (2016) 247-266 • View PublicationBIB
Rook theory has been investigated by many people since its introduction by Kaplansky and Riordan in 1946. Goldman, Joichi and White in 1975 showed that the sum over $k$ of the product of the $(n-k)$-th rook numbers multiplied by the $k$-th falling factorial polynomials factorize into a product. In the sequel, different types of generalizations and analogues of this product formula have been derived by various authors. In 2008, Miceli and Remmel constructed a rook theory model involving augmented rook boards in which they showed the validity of a general product formula which can be specialized to all other product formulas that so far have appeared in the literature on rook theory. In this work, we construct an elliptic extension of the $q$-analogue of Miceli and Remmel's result. Special cases yield elliptic extensions of various known rook theory models.
Numerical semigroups II: pseudo-symmetric AA-Semigroups
Published in Journal of Algebra 470 (2017), 484-498 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a continuation of the paper "Numerical Semigroups: Apéry Sets and Hilbert Series". We consider the general numerical AA-semigroup, i.e., semigroups consisting of all non-negative integer linear combinations of relatively prime positive integers of the form $a,a+d,a+2d,\dots,a+kd,c$. We first prove that, in contrast to arbitrary numerical semigroups, there exists an upper bound for the type of AA-semigroups that only depends on the number of generators of the semigroup. We then present two characterizations of pseudo-symmetric AA-semigroups. The first one leads to a polynomial time algorithm to decide whether an AA-semigroup is pseudo-symmetric. The second one gives a method to construct pseudo-symmetric AA-semigroups and provides explicit families of pseudo-symmetric semigroups with arbitrarily large number of generators.
