Approximating permanents and hafnians
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2017:2, 34 pp • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the logarithm of the permanent of an nxn real matrix A and the logarithm of the hafnian of a 2nx2n real symmetric matrix A can be approximated within an additive error 1 > epsilon > 0 by a polynomial p in the entries of A of degree O(ln n - ln epsilon) provided the entries a_ij of A satisfy delta < a_ij < 1 for an arbitrarily small delta > 0, fixed in advance. Moreover, the polynomial p can be computed in n^{O(ln n - ln epsilon)} time. We also improve bounds for approximating ln per A, ln haf A and logarithms of multi-dimensional permanents for complex matrices and tensors A.

The peak statistics on simsun permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the relationship among left peaks, interior peaks and up-down runs of simsun permutations. Properties of the generating polynomials, including the recurrence relation, generating function and real-rootedness are studied. Moreover, we introduce and study simsun permutations of the second kind.
A family of semifields in characteristic 2
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct and describe the basic properties of a family of semifields in characteristic $2.$ The construction relies on the properties of projective polynomials over finite fields. We start by associating non-associative products to each such polynomial. The resulting presemifields form the degenerate case of our family. They are isotopic to the Knuth semifields which are quadratic over left and right nucleus. The non-degenerate members of our family display a very different behaviour. Their left and right nucleus agrees with the center, the middle nucleus is quadratic over the center. None of those semifields is isotopic or Knuth equivalent to a commutative semifield. As a by-product we obtain the complete taxonomy of the characteristic $2$ semifields which are quadratic over the middle nucleus, bi-quadratic over the left and right nucleus and not isotopic to twisted fields. This includes {determining} when two such semifields are isotopic and the order of the autotopism group.

A survey of Elekes-Rónyai-type problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an overview of recent progress around a problem introduced by Elekes and Rónyai. The prototype problem is to show that a polynomial $f\in \mathbb{R}[x,y]$ has a large image on a Cartesian product $A\times B\subset \mathbb{R}^2$, unless $f$ has a group-related special form. We discuss a number of variants and generalizations. This includes the Elekes-Szabó problem, which generalizes the Elekes-Rónyai problem to a question about an upper bound on the intersection of an algebraic surface with a Cartesian product, and curve variants, where we ask the same questions for Cartesian products of finite subsets of algebraic curves. These problems lie at the crossroads of combinatorics, algebra, and geometry: They ask combinatorial questions about algebraic objects, whose answers turn out to have applications to geometric questions involving basic objects like distances, lines, and circles, as well as to sum-product-type questions from additive combinatorics. As part of a recent surge of algebraic techniques in combinatorial geometry, a number of quantitative and qualitative steps have been made within this framework. Nevertheless, many tantalizing open questions remain.

A proof of the Square Paths Conjecture
The modified Macdonald polynomials, introduced by Garsia and Haiman (1996), have many astounding combinatorial properties. One such class of properties involves applying the related $\nabla$ operator of Bergeron and Garsia (1999) to basic symmetric functions. The first discovery of this type was the (recently proven) Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov (2005), which relates the expression $\nabla e_n$ to parking functions. In (2007), Loehr and Warrington conjectured a similar expression for $\nabla p_n$ in terms of labeled square paths. In this paper, we extend Haglund and Loehr's (2005) notion of schedules to labeled square paths and apply this extension to prove the Square Paths Conjecture.
Kirillov's unimodality conjecture for the rectangular Narayana polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the study of Kostka numbers and Catalan numbers, Kirillov posed a unimodality conjecture for the rectangular Narayana polynomials. We prove that the rectangular Narayana polynomials have only real zeros, and thereby confirm Kirillov's unimodality conjecture with the help of Newton's inequality. By using an equidistribution property between descent numbers and ascent numbers on ballot paths due to Sulanke and a bijection between lattice words and standard Young tableaux, we show that the rectangular Narayana polynomial is equal to the descent generating function on standard Young tableaux of certain rectangular shape, up to a power of the indeterminate. Then we obtain the real-rootedness of the rectangular Narayana polynomial based on Brenti's result that the descent generating function of standard Young tableaux has only real zeros.

Quantum integer-valued polynomials
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 45(2), 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We define a $q$-deformation of the classical ring of integer-valued polynomials which we call the ring of quantum integer-valued polynomials. We show that this ring has a remarkable combinatorial structure and enjoys many positivity properties: for instance, the structure constants for this ring with respect to its basis of $q$-binomial coefficient polynomials belong to $\mathbb{N}[q]$. We then classify all maps from this ring into a field, extending a known classification in the classical case where $q=1$.

Branching Rules for Symmetric Hypergeometric Polynomials
Published in Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics 76 (2018), 125--153 • View PublicationBIB
Starting from a recently found branching formula for the six-parameter family of symmetric Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, we arrive by degeneration at corresponding branching rules for symmetric hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of Wilson, continuous Hahn, Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite type.
Arithmetics and combinatorics of tropical Severi varieties of univariate polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a description of the tropical variety of univariate polynomials of degree n having two double roots. As a set, it is given as the union of three types of maximal cones of dimension n-1, where only cones of two of these types are cones of the secondary fan of {0,...,n}. Through Kapranov's theorem, this goal is achieved by a careful study of the possible valuations of the elementary symmetric functions of the roots of a polynomial with two double root. Despite its apparent simplicity, the computation of the tropical Severi variety has both combinatorial and arithmetic ingredients.

We extend the table of Garoufalidis, Le and Zagier concerning conjectural Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for tails of colored Jones polynomials to all alternating knots up to 10 crossings. We then prove these new identities using q-series techniques.

Polynomials with palindromic and unimodal coefficients
Published in Acta Mathematica Sinica, English Series, 31 (2015), 565--575 • View PublicationBIB
Let $f(q)=a_rq^r+\cdots+a_sq^s$, with $a_r\neq 0$ and $a_s\neq 0$, be a real polynomial. It is a palindromic polynomial of darga $n$ if $r+s=n$ and $a_{r+i}=a_{s-i}$ for all $i$. Polynomials of darga $n$ form a linear subspace $\mathcal{P}_n(q)$ of $\mathbb{R}(q)_{n+1}$ of dimension $\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor+1$. We give transition matrices between two bases $\left\{q^j(1+q+\cdots+q^{n-2j})\right\}, \left\{q^j(1+q)^{n-2j}\right\}$ and the standard basis $\left\{q^j(1+q^{n-2j})\right\}$ of $\mathcal{P}_n(q)$. We present some characterizations and sufficient conditions for palindromic polynomials that can be expressed in terms of these two bases with nonnegative coefficients. We also point out the link between such polynomials and rank-generating functions of posets.

Higher spin six vertex model and symmetric rational functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a fully inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. At least in the case of the step initial condition, our formulas degenerate in appropriate limits to many known formulas of such type for integrable probabilistic systems in the (1+1)d KPZ universality class, including the stochastic six vertex model, ASEP, various q-TASEPs, and associated zero range processes. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions which can be defined as partition functions of the inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains. In the homogeneous case, such functions were previously studied in http://arxiv.org/abs/1410.0976; they also generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model.

Perfect and separating Hash families: new bounds via the algorithmic cluster expansion local lemma
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present new lower bounds for the size of perfect and separating hash families ensuring their existence. Such new bounds are based on the algorithmic Cluster expansion improved version of the Lovász Local Lemma, which also implies that the Moser-Tardos algorithm finds such hash families in polynomial time.

Real zeroes of random polynomials, II: Descartes' rule of signs and anti-concentration on the symmetric group
In this sequel to Part-I, we present a different approach to bounding the expected number of real zeroes of random polynomials with real independent identically distributed coefficients or more generally, exchangeable coefficients. We show that the mean number of real zeroes does not grow faster than the logarithm of the degree. The main ingredients of our approach are Descartes' rule of signs and a new anti-concentration inequality for the symmetric group. This paper can be read independently of part-I in this series.
Unimodality via alternating gamma vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a polynomial with palindromic coefficients, unimodality is equivalent to having a nonnegative $g$-vector. A sufficient condition for unimodality is having a nonnegative $γ$-vector, though one can have negative entries in the $γ$-vector and still have a nonnegative $g$-vector. In this paper we provide combinatorial models for three families of $γ$-vectors that alternate in sign. In each case, the $γ$-vectors come from unimodal polynomials with straightforward combinatorial descriptions, but for which there is no straightforward combinatorial proof of unimodality. By using the transformation from $γ$-vector to $g$-vector, we express the entries of the $g$-vector combinatorially, but as an alternating sum. In the case of the $q$-analogue of $n!$, we use a sign-reversing involution to interpret the alternating sum, resulting in a manifestly positive formula for the $g$-vector. In other words, we give a combinatorial proof of unimodality. We consider this a "proof of concept" result that we hope can inspire a similar result for the other two cases, $\prod_{j=1}^n (1+q^j)$ and the $q$-binomial coefficients.

Structure constants for K-theory of Grassmannians, revisited
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of computing products of Schubert classes in the cohomology ring can be formulated as the problem of expanding skew Schur polynomials into the basis of ordinary Schur polynomials. In contrast, the problem of computing the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a Grassmannian variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves is not equivalent to expanding skew stable Grothendieck polynomials into the basis of ordinary stable Grothendiecks. Instead, we show that the appropriate K-theoretic analogy is through the expansion of skew reverse plane partitions into the basis of polynomials which are Hopf-dual to stable Grothendieck polynomials. We combinatorially prove this expansion is determined by Yamanouchi set-valued tableaux. A by-product of our results is a dual approach proof for Buch's K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of stable Grothendieck polynomials.

Generalised Mycielski graphs and bounds on chromatic numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the coindex of the box complex $\mathrm{B}(H)$ of a graph $H$ can be measured by the generalised Mycielski graphs which admit a homomorphism to it. As a consequence, we exhibit for every graph $H$ a system of linear equations solvable in polynomial time, with the following properties: If the system has no solutions, then $\mathrm{coind}(\mathrm{B}(H)) + 2 \leq 3$; if the system has solutions, then $χ(H) \geq 4$. We generalise the method to other bounds on chromatic numbers using linear algebra.

On the spectral distributions of distance-k graph of free product graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the distribution with respect to the vacuum state of the distance-$k$ graph of a $d$-regular tree. From this result we show that the distance-$k$ graph of a $d$-regular graphs converges to the distribution of the distance-$k$ graph of a regular tree. Finally, we prove that, properly normalized, the asymptotic distributions of distance-$k$ graphs of the $d$-fold free product graph, as $d$ tends to infinity, is given by the distribution of $P_k(s)$, where $s$ is a semicircle random variable and $P_k$ is the $k$-th Chebychev polynomial.

Proof of Sun's conjectures on integer-valued polynomials
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications 444, 182-191 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Z.-W. Sun introduced two kinds of polynomials related to the Delannoy numbers, and proved some supercongruences on sums involving those polynomials. We deduce new summation formulas for squares of those polynomials and use them to prove that certain rational sums involving even powers of those polynomials are integers whenever they are evaluated at integers. This confirms two conjectures of Z.-W. Sun. We also conjecture that many of these results have neat $q$-analogues.

Polynomiality of some hook-content summations for doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2009, the first author proved the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths for integer partitions by using an identity of Macdonald in the framework of type $\widetilde A$ affine root systems, and conjectured that some summations over the set of all partitions of size $n$ are always polynomials in $n$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley. Recently, Pétréolle derived two Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas for $\widetilde C$ and $\widetilde C\,\check{}$ which involve doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions. Inspired by all those previous works, we establish the polynomiality of some hook-content summations for doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions.
