Partition functions of integrable lattice models and combinatorics of symmetric polynomials
We review and present new studies on the relation between the partition functions of integrable lattice models and symmetric polynomials, and its combinatorial representation theory based on the correspondence, including our work. In particular, we examine the correspondence between the wavefunctions of the XXZ type, Felderhof type and the boson type integrable models and symmetric polynomials such as the Schur, Grothendieck and symplectic Schur functions. We also give a brief report of our work on generalizing the correspondence between the Felderhof models and factorial Schur and symplectic Schur functions.
Tutte relations, TQFT, and planarity of cubic graphs

It has been known since the work of Tutte that the value of the chromatic polynomial of planar triangulations at $(3+\sqrt{5})/2$ has a number of remarkable properties. We investigate to what extent Tutte's relations characterize planar graphs. A version of the Tutte linear relation for the flow polynomial at $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$ is shown to give a planarity criterion for $3$-connected cubic graphs. A conjecture is formulated that the golden identity for the flow polynomial characterizes planarity of cubic graphs as well. In addition, Tutte's upper bound on the chromatic polynomial of planar triangulations at $(3+\sqrt{5})/2$ is generalized to other Beraha numbers, and an exponential lower bound is given for the value at $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$. The proofs of these results rely on the structure of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and more generally on methods of topological quantum field theory.

Two vectors $x,y$ in $\mathbb{Z}_g^n$ are $ qualitatively$ $ independent$ if for all pairs $(a,b)\in \mathbb{Z}_g\times \mathbb{Z}_g$, there exists $i\in \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ such that $(x_i,y_i)=(a,b)$. A covering array on a graph $G$, denoted by $CA(n,G,g)$, is a $|V(G)|\times n$ array on $\mathbb{Z}_g$ with the property that any two rows which correspond to adjacent vertices in $G$ are qualitatively independent. The number of columns in such array is called its $size$. Given a graph $G$, a covering array on $G$ with minimum size is called $optimal$. Our primary concern in this paper is with constructions that make optimal covering arrays on large graphs those are obtained from product of smaller graphs. We consider four most extensively studied graph products in literature and give upper and lower bounds on the the size of covering arrays on graph products. We find families of graphs for which the size of covering array on the Cartesian product achieves the lower bound. Finally, we present a polynomial time approximation algorithm with approximation ratio $\log(\frac{V}{2^{k-1}})$ for constructing covering array on graph $G=(V,E)$ with $k>1$ prime factors with respect to the Cartesian product.
Determinants Containing Powers of Generalized Fibonacci Numbers
We study determinants of matrices whose entries are powers of Fibonacci numbers. We then extend the results to include entries that are powers of generalized Fibonacci numbers defined as a second-order linear recurrence relation. These studies have led us to discover a fundamental identity of determinant involving powers of linear polynomials. Finally, we discuss the determinants of matrices whose entries are products of the generalized Fibonacci numbers.
Combinatorial and Probabilistic Formulae for Divided Symmetrization

Divided symmetrization of a function $f(x_1,\dots,x_n)$ is symmetrization of the ratio $$DS_G(f)=\frac{f(x_1,\dots,x_n)}{\prod (x_i-x_j)},$$ where the product is taken over the set of edges of some graph $G$. We concentrate on the case when $G$ is a tree and $f$ is a polynomial of degree $n-1$, in this case $DS_G(f)$ is a constant function. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the divided symmetrization of monomials for general trees and probabilistic game interpretation for a tree which is a path. In particular, this implies a result by Postnikov originally proved by computing volumes of special polytopes, and suggests its generalization.

Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $p>2$ and $A\subset F$ have sufficiently small cardinality in terms of $p$. We improve the state of the art of a variety of sum-product type inequalities. In particular, we prove that $$ |AA|^2|A+A|^3 \gg |A|^6,\qquad |A(A+A)|\gg |A|^{3/2}. $$ We also prove several two-variable extractor estimates: ${\displaystyle |A(A+1)| \gg|A|^{9/8},}$ $$ |A+A^2|\gg |A|^{11/10},\; |A+A^3|\gg |A|^{29/28}, \; |A+1/A|\gg |A|^{31/30}.$$
Besides, we address questions of cardinalities $|A+A|$ vs $|f(A)+f(A)|$, for a polynomial $f$, where we establish the inequalities $$ \max(|A+A|,\, |A^2+A^2|)\gg |A|^{8/7}, \;\; \max(|A-A|,\, |A^3+A^3|)\gg |A|^{17/16}. $$ Szemerédi-Trotter type implications of the arithmetic estimates in question are that a Cartesian product point set $P=A\times B$ in $F^2$, of $n$ elements, with $|B|\leq |A|< p^{2/3}$ makes $O(n^{3/4}m^{2/3} + m + n)$ incidences with any set of $m$ lines. In particular, when $|A|=|B|$, there are $\ll n^{9/4}$ collinear triples of points in $P$, $\gg n^{3/2}$ distinct lines between pairs of its points, in $\gg n^{3/4}$ distinct directions.
Besides, $P=A\times A$ determines $\gg n^{9/16}$ distinct pair-wise distances.
These estimates are obtained on the basis of a new plane geometry interpretation of the incidence theorem between points and planes in three dimensions, which we call collisions of images.
Spectral Analysis of Quasi-Cyclic Product Codes

This paper considers a linear quasi-cyclic product code of two given quasi-cyclic codes of relatively prime lengths over finite fields. We give the spectral analysis of a quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the spectral analysis of the row- and the column-code. Moreover, we provide a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given quasi-cyclic code and present a new algebraic decoding algorithm.More specifically, we prove an explicit (unreduced) basis of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the generator matrix in reduced Gr{ö}bner basis with respect to the position-over-term order (RGB/POT) form of the l\_a-quasi-cyclic row- and the l\_b-quasi-cyclic column-code, respectively. This generalizes the work of Burton and Weldon for the generator polynomial of a cyclic product code (where l\_a =l\_b=1). Furthermore, we derive the generator matrix in Pre-RGB/POT form of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code for two special cases: (i) for l\_a=2 and l\_b=1, and (ii) if the row-code is a 1-level l\_a-quasi-cyclic code (for arbitrary l\_a) and l\_b=1.For arbitrary l\_a and l\_b, the Pre-RGB/POT form of the generator matrix of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code is conjectured. The spectral analysis is applied to the generator matrix of the product of an l-quasi-cyclic and a cyclic code, and we propose a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given l-quasi-cyclic code. In addition, we develop an efficient syndrome-based decoding algorithm for l-phased burst errors with guaranteed decoding radius.
The C-finite Ansatz Meets the Holonomic Ansatz
We show how the continuous Almkvist-Zeilberger algorithm can be used to efficiently discover and prove differential equations satisfied by generating functions of sequences defined as integrals of powers of C-finite polynomial sequences (like the Chebyshev polynomials) from which one can automatically derive linear recurrences with polynomial coefficients for the sequences themselves. We fully implement this with a Maple package, CfiniteIntergal.txt .

We generalize a parity result of Fleishner and Stiebitz that being combined with Alon--Tarsi polynomial method allowed them to prove that a 4-regular graph formed by a Hamiltonian cycle and several disjoint triangles is always 3-choosable. Also we present a modification of polynomial method and show how it gives slightly more combinatorial information about colourings than direct application of Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

We show that a finite set of integers $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le K |A|$ contains a large piece $X \subseteq A$ with Freĭman dimension $O(\log K)$, where large means $|A|/|X| \ll \exp(O(\log^2 K))$. This can be thought of as a major quantitative improvement on Freĭman's dimension lemma, or as a "weak" Freĭman--Ruzsa theorem with almost polynomial bounds.
The methods used, centered around an "additive energy increment strategy", differ from the usual tools in this area and may have further potential.
Most of our argument takes place over $\mathbb{F}_2^n$, which is itself curious. There is a possibility that the above bounds could be improved, assuming sufficiently strong results in the spirit of the Polynomial Freĭman--Ruzsa Conjecture over finite fields.

We introduce and study the minimum distance function of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field, and show that it generalizes the minimum distance of projective Reed-Muller-type codes over finite fields. This gives an algebraic formulation of the minimum distance of a projective Reed-Muller-type code in terms of the algebraic invariants and structure of the underlying vanishing ideal. Then we give a method, based on Groebner bases and Hilbert functions, to find lower bounds for the minimum distance of certain Reed-Muller-type codes. Finally we show explicit upper bounds for the number of zeros of polynomials in a projective nested cartesian set and give some support to a conjecture of Carvalho, Lopez-Neumann and Lopez.
Non-representable hyperbolic matroids

The generalized Lax conjecture asserts that each hyperbolicity cone is a linear slice of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. Hyperbolic polynomials give rise to a class of (hyperbolic) matroids which properly contains the class of matroids representable over the complex numbers. This connection was used by the second author to construct counterexamples to algebraic (stronger) versions of the generalized Lax conjecture by considering a non-representable hyperbolic matroid. The Vámos matroid and a generalization of it are, prior to this work, the only known instances of non-representable hyperbolic matroids.
We prove that the Non-Pappus and Non-Desargues matroids are non-representable hyperbolic matroids by exploiting a connection between Euclidean Jordan algebras and projective geometries. We further identify a large class of hyperbolic matroids which contains the Vámos matroid and the generalized Vámos matroids recently studied by Burton, Vinzant and Youm. This proves a conjecture of Burton et al. We also prove that many of the matroids considered here are non-representable. The proof of hyperbolicity for the matroids in the class depends on proving nonnegativity of certain symmetric polynomials. In particular we generalize and strengthen several inequalities in the literature, such as the Laguerre-Turán inequality and Jensen's inequality. Finally we explore consequences to algebraic versions of the generalized Lax conjecture.
Intrinsic Volumes of Polyhedral Cones: A combinatorial perspective

The theory of intrinsic volumes of convex cones has recently found striking applications in areas such as convex optimization and compressive sensing. This article provides a self-contained account of the combinatorial theory of intrinsic volumes for polyhedral cones. Direct derivations of the General Steiner formula, the conic analogues of the Brianchon-Gram-Euler and the Gauss-Bonnet relations, and the Principal Kinematic Formula are given. In addition, a connection between the characteristic polynomial of a hyperplane arrangement and the intrinsic volumes of the regions of the arrangement, due to Klivans and Swartz, is generalized and some applications are presented.
The Cohen-Macaulayness of the bounded complex of an affine oriented matroid

An affine oriented matroid is a combinatorial abstraction of an affine hyperplane arrangement. From it, Novik, Postnikov and Sturmfels constructed a squarefree monomial ideal in a polynomial ring, called an oriented matroid ideal, and got beautiful results. Developing their theory, we will show the following.
(1) If an oriented matroid ideal is Cohen-Macaulay, then the bounded complex (a regular CW complex associated with it) of the corresponding affine oriented matroid is a contractible homology manifold with boundary. This is closely related to Dong's theorem, which used to be "Zaslavsky's conjecture".
(2) We characterize the affine oriented matroid whose corresponding ideal is Cohen-Macaulay.
(3) In the Cohen-Macaulay case, we give a description of the canonical module of the residue class ring by an oriented matroid ideal.

Let $HD_d(p,q)$ denote the minimal size of a transversal that can always be guaranteed for a family of compact convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which satisfy the $(p,q)$-property ($p \geq q \geq d+1$). In a celebrated proof of the Hadwiger-Debrunner conjecture, Alon and Kleitman proved that $HD_d(p,q)$ exists for all $p \geq q \geq d+1$. Specifically, they prove that $HD_d(p,d+1)$ is $\tilde{O}(p^{d^2+d})$.
We present several improved bounds:
(i) For any $q \geq d+1$, $HD_d(p,q) = \tilde{O}(p^{d \left(\frac{q-1}{q-d}\right)})$.
(ii) For $q \geq \log p$, $HD_d(p,q) = \tilde{O}(p+(p/q)^d)$.
(iii) For every $ε> 0$ there exists a $p_0 = p_0(ε)$ such that for every $p \geq p_0$ and for every $q \geq p^{\frac{d-1}{d}+ε}$ we have: $p-q+1 \leq HD_d(p,q) \leq p-q+2$.
The latter is the first near tight estimate of $HD_d(p,q)$ for an extended range of values of $(p,q)$ since the 1957 Hadwiger-Debrunner theorem.
We also prove a $(p,2)$-theorem for families in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with union complexity below a specific quadratic bound. Based on this, we introduce a polynomial time constant factor approximation algorithm for MAX-CLIQUE of intersection graphs of convex sets satisfying this property.
A Probabilistic Characterization of the Dominance Order on Partitions

A probabilistic characterization of the dominance partial order on the set of partitions is presented. This extends work in "Symmetric polynomials and symmetric mean inequalities". Electron. J. Combin., 20(3): Paper 34, 2013.
Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $ν$ be a partition of $n$. Let $F$ be the Ferrers diagram of $ν$. Let $m$ be a positive integer and let $p \in (0,1)$. Fill each cell of $F$ with balls, the number of which is independently drawn from the random variable $X = Bin(m,p)$. Given non-negative integers $j$ and $t$, let $P(ν,j,t)$ be the probability that the total number of balls in $F$ is $j$ and that no row of $F$ contains more that $t$ balls. We show that if $ν$ and $μ$ are partitions of $n$, then $ν$ dominates $μ$, i.e. $\sum_{i=1}^k ν(i) \geq \sum_{i=1}^k μ(i)$ for all positive integers $k$, if and only if $P(ν,j,t) \leq P(μ,j,t)$ for all non-negative integers $j$ and $t$. It is also shown that this same result holds when $X$ is replaced by any one member of a large class of random variables.
Let $p = \{p_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ be a sequence of real numbers. Let ${\cal T}_p$ be the $\mathbb{N}$ by $\mathbb{N}$ matrix with $({\cal T}_p)_{i,j} = p_{j-i}$ for all $i, j \in \mathbb{N}$ where we take $p_n = 0$ for $n < 0$. Let $(p^i)_j$ be the coefficient of $x^j$ in $(p(x))^i$ where $p(x) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty p_n x^n$ and $p^0(x) =1$. Let ${\cal S}_p$ be the $\mathbb{N}$ by $\mathbb{N}$ matrix with $({\cal S}_p)_{i,j} = (p^i)_j$ for all $i, j \in \mathbb{N}$. We show that if ${\cal T}_p$ is totally non-negative of order $k$ then so is ${\cal S}_p$. The case $k=2$ of this result is a key step in the proof of the result on domination. We also show that the case $k=2$ would follow from a combinatorial conjecture that might be of independent interest.
Rectangular Kronecker coefficients and plethysms in geometric complexity theory

We prove that in the geometric complexity theory program the vanishing of rectangular Kronecker coefficients cannot be used to prove superpolynomial determinantal complexity lower bounds for the permanent polynomial.
Moreover, we prove the positivity of rectangular Kronecker coefficients for a large class of partitions where the side lengths of the rectangle are at least quadratic in the length of the partition. We also compare rectangular Kronecker coefficients with their corresponding plethysm coefficients, which leads to a new lower bound for rectangular Kronecker coefficients. Moreover, we prove that the saturation of the rectangular Kronecker semigroup is trivial, we show that the rectangular Kronecker positivity stretching factor is 2 for a long first row, and we completely classify the positivity of rectangular limit Kronecker coefficients that were introduced by Manivel in 2011.
Generalized Weyl modules, alcove paths and Macdonald polynomials
Classical local Weyl modules for a simple Lie algebra are labeled by dominant weights. We generalize the definition to the case of arbitrary weights and study the properties of the generalized modules. We prove that the representation theory of the generalized Weyl modules can be described in terms of the alcove paths and the quantum Bruhat graph. We make use of the Orr-Shimozono formula in order to prove that the $t=\infty$ specializations of the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials are equal to the characters of certain generalized Weyl modules.
On Euclidean $t$-designs
A Euclidean $t$-design, as introduced by Neumaier and Seidel (1988), is a finite set ${\cal X} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with a weight function $w: {\cal X} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^+$ for which $$\sum_{r \in R} W_r \overline{f}_{S_{r}} = \sum_{{\bf x} \in {\cal X}} w({\bf x}) f({\bf x})$$ holds for every polynomial $f$ of total degree at most $t$; here $R$ is the set of norms of the points in ${\cal X}$, $W_r$ is the total weight of all elements of ${\cal X}$ with norm $r$, $S_r$ is the $n$-dimensional sphere of radius $r$ centered at the origin, and $\overline{f}_{S_{r}}$ is the average of $f$ over $S_{r}$. Neumaier and Seidel (1988), as well as Delsarte and Seidel (1989), also proved a Fisher-type inequality $|{\cal X}| \geq N(n,|R|,t)$ (assuming that the design is antipodal if $t$ is odd). For fixed $n$ and $|R|$ we have $N(n,|R|,t)=O(t^{n-1})$. In Part I of this paper we provide a recursive construction for Euclidean $t$-designs in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Namely, we show how to use certain Gauss--Jacobi quadrature formulae to "lift" a Euclidean $t$-design in $\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ to a Euclidean $t$-design in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, preserving both the norm spectrum $R$ and the weight sum $W_r$ for each $r \in R$. A Euclidean design with exactly $N(n,|R|,t)$ points is called tight. In Part II of this paper we construct tight Euclidean designs for $n=2$ and every $t$ and $|R|$ with $|R| \leq \frac{t+5}{4}$. We also provide examples for tight Euclidean designs with $(n,|R|,t) \in \{(3,2,5),(3,3,7),(4,2,7)\}$.
Crossing Number is Hard for Kernelization
The graph crossing number problem, cr(G)<=k, asks for a drawing of a graph G in the plane with at most k edge crossings. Although this problem is in general notoriously difficult, it is fixed- parameter tractable for the parameter k [Grohe]. This suggests a closely related question of whether this problem has a polynomial kernel, meaning whether every instance of cr(G)<=k can be in polynomial time reduced to an equivalent instance of size polynomial in k (and independent of |G|). We answer this question in the negative. Along the proof we show that the tile crossing number problem of twisted planar tiles is NP-hard, which has been an open problem for some time, too, and then employ the complexity technique of cross-composition. Our result holds already for the special case of graphs obtained from planar graphs by adding one edge.
