Recently, the theory of dense graph limits has received attention from multiple disciplines including graph theory, computer science, statistical physics, probability, statistics, and group theory. In this paper we initiate the study of the general structure of differentiable graphon parameters $F$. We derive consistency conditions among the higher Gâteaux derivatives of $F$ when restricted to the subspace of edge weighted graphs $\mathcal{W}_{\bf p}$. Surprisingly, these constraints are rigid enough to imply that the multilinear functionals $Λ: \mathcal{W}_{\bf p}^n \to \mathbb{R}$ satisfying the constraints are determined by a finite set of constants indexed by isomorphism classes of multigraphs with $n$ edges and no isolated vertices. Using this structure theory, we explain the central role that homomorphism densities play in the analysis of graphons, by way of a new combinatorial interpretation of their derivatives. In particular, homomorphism densities serve as the monomials in a polynomial algebra that can be used to approximate differential graphon parameters as Taylor polynomials. These ideas are summarized by our main theorem, which asserts that homomorphism densities $t(H,-)$ where $H$ has at most $N$ edges form a basis for the space of smooth graphon parameters whose $(N+1)$st derivatives vanish. As a consequence of this theory, we also extend and derive new proofs of linear independence of multigraph homomorphism densities, and characterize homomorphism densities. In addition, we develop a theory of series expansions, including Taylor's theorem for graph parameters and a uniqueness principle for series. We use this theory to analyze questions raised by Lovász, including studying infinite quantum algebras and the connection between right- and left-homomorphism densities.
Averages of alpha-determinants over permutations
We show that certain weighted average of the alpha-determinant of a $kn$ by $kn$ matrix of the form $A\otimes1_{1,k}$, the Kronecker product of a $kn$ by $n$ matrix $A$ and $1$ by $k$ all one matrix $1_{1,k}$, over permutations of $kn$ letters is reduced to the $k$-wreath determinant of $A$ up to constant. The constant is exactly given by the modified content polynomial for the Young diagram $(k^n)$. As a corollary, we give a `determinantal' formula for certain functions on the symmetric groups which are invariant under the left and right translation by a Young subgroup, especially the values of the Kostka numbers for rectangular shapes with arbitrary weight. This corollary gives a generalization of the formula of irreducible characters of the symmetric group for rectangular shapes due to Stanley.

Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all colored quotient rings that are Macaulay-Lex, and give a simultaneous generalization of both the Clements-Lindström theorem and the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai theorem. We also show that the $f$-vectors of $(a_1, \dots, a_n)$-colored simplicial complexes or multicomplexes are never characterized by "reverse-lexicographic" complexes or multicomplexes when $n>1$ and $(a_1, \dots, a_n) \neq (1, \dots, 1)$.
The Q-generating function for graphs with application

For a simple connected graph $G$, the $Q$-generating function of the numbers $N_k$ of semi-edge walks of length $k$ in $G$ is defined by $W_Q(t)=\sum\nolimits_{k = 0}^\infty {N_k t^k }$. This paper reveals that the $Q$-generating function $W_Q(t)$ may be expressed in terms of the $Q$-polynomials of the graph $G$ and its complement $\overline{G}$. Using this result, we study some $Q$-spectral properties of graphs and compute the $Q$-polynomials for some graphs obtained by the use of some operation on graphs, such as the complement graph of a regular graph, the join of two graphs, the (edge)corona of two graphs and so forth. As another application of the $Q$-generating function $W_Q(t)$, we also give a combinatorial interpretation of the $Q$-coronal of $G$, which is defined to be the sum of the entries of the matrix $(λI_n-Q(G))^{-1}$. This result may be used to obtain the many alternative calculations of the $Q$-polynomials of the (edge)corona of two graphs. Further, we also compute the $Q$-coronals of the join of two graphs and the complete multipartite graphs.

A hyperoval in the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is a set of $q+2$ points no three of which are collinear. Hyperovals have been studied extensively since the 1950s with the ultimate goal of establishing a complete classification. It is well known that hyperovals in $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ are in one-to-one correspondence to polynomials with certain properties, called o-polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_q$. We classify o-polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_q$ of degree less than $\frac12q^{1/4}$. As a corollary we obtain a complete classification of exceptional o-polynomials, namely polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$ that are o-polynomials of infinitely many extensions of $\mathbb{F}_q$.
Shapes of topological RNA structures

A topological RNA structure is derived from a diagram and its shape is obtained by collapsing the stacks of the structure into single arcs and by removing any arcs of length one. Shapes contain key topological, information and for fixed topological genus there exist only finitely many such shapes. We shall express topological RNA structures as unicellular maps, i.e. graphs together with a cyclic ordering of their half-edges. In this paper we prove a bijection of shapes of topological RNA structures. We furthermore derive a linear time algorithm generating shapes of fixed topological genus. We derive explicit expressions for the coefficients of the generating polynomial of these shapes and the generating function of RNA structures of genus $g$. Furthermore we outline how shapes can be used in order to extract essential information of RNA structure databases.
The glow of Fourier matrices: universality and fluctuations

The glow of an Hadamard matrix $H\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ is the probability measure $μ\in\mathcal P(\mathbb C)$ describing the distribution of $\varphi(a,b)=<a,Hb>$, where $a,b\in\mathbb T^N$ are random. We prove that $\varphi/N$ becomes complex Gaussian with $N\to\infty$, and that the universality holds as well at order 2. In the case of a Fourier matrix, $F_G\in M_N(\mathbb C)$ with $|G|=N$, the universality holds up to order 4, and the fluctuations are encoded by certain subtle integrals, which appear in connection with several Hadamard-related questions. In the Walsh matrix case, $G=\mathbb Z_2^n$, we conjecture that the glow is polynomial in $N=2^n$.

This article studies real roots of the flow polynomial $F(G,λ)$ of a bridgeless graph $G$. For any integer $k\ge 0$, let $ξ_k$ be the supremum in $(1,2]$ such that $F(G,λ)$ has no real roots in $(1,ξ_k)$ for all graphs $G$ with $|W(G)|\le k$, where $W(G)$ is the set of vertices in $G$ of degrees larger than $3$. We prove that $ξ_k$ can be determined by considering a finite set of graphs and show that $ξ_k=2$ for $k\le 2$, $ξ_3=1.430\cdots$, $ξ_4=1.361\cdots$ and $ξ_5=1.317\cdots$. We also prove that for any bridgeless graph $G=(V,E)$, if all roots of $F(G,λ)$ are real but some of these roots are not in the set $\{1,2,3\}$, then $|E|\ge |V|+17$ and $F(G,λ)$ has at least 9 real roots in $(1,2)$.
On the domination polynomials of cactus chains
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The domination polynomial of $G$ is the polynomial $D(G, x)=\sum_{i=γ(G)}^{n} d(G,i) x^{i}$, where $d(G,i)$ is the number of dominating sets of $G$ of size $i$ and $γ(G)$ is the domination number of $G$. In this paper we consider cactus chains with triangular and square blocks and study their domination polynomials.
Polynomials with dense zero sets and discrete models of the Kakeya conjecture and the Furstenberg set problem

We prove the discrete analogue of Kakeya conjecture over $\mathbb{R}^n$. This result suggests that a (hypothetically) low dimensional Kakeya set cannot be constructed directly from discrete configurations. We also prove a generalization which completely solves the discrete analogue of the Furstenberg set problem in all dimensions. The difference between our theorems and the (true) problems is only the (still difficult) issue of continuity since no transversality-at-incidences assumptions are imposed. The main tool of the proof is a theorem of Wongkew \cite{wongkew2003volumes} which states that a low degree polynomial cannot have its zero set being too dense inside the unit cube, coupled with Dvir-type polynomial arguments \cite{dvir2009size}. From the viewpoint of the proofs, we also state a conjecture that is stronger than and almost equivalent to the (lower) Minkowski version of the Kakeya conjecture and prove some results towards it. We also present our own version of the proof of the theorem in \cite{wongkew2003volumes}. Our proof shows that this theorem follows from a combination of properties of zero sets of polynomials and a general proposition about hypersurfaces which might be of independent interest. Finally, we discuss how to generalize Bourgain's conjecture to high dimensions, which is closely related to the theme here.
Optimal constructions for ID-based one-way-function key predistribution schemes realizing specified communication graphs

We study a method for key predistribution in a network of $n$ users where pairwise keys are computed by hashing users' IDs along with secret information that has been (pre)distributed to the network users by a trusted entity. A communication graph $G$ can be specified to indicate which pairs of users should be able to compute keys. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for schemes of this type to be secure. We also consider the problem of minimizing the storage requirements of such a scheme; we are interested in the total storage as well as the maximum storage required by any user. Minimizing the total storage is NP-hard, whereas minimizing the maximum storage required by a user can be computed in polynomial time.
The tropical discriminant in positive characteristic
We study singularities in tropical hypersurfaces defined by a valuation over a field of positive characteristic. We provide a method to compute the set of singular points of a tropical hypersurface in positive characteristic and the p-adic case. This computation is applied to determine all maximal cones of the tropical linear space of univariate polynomials of degree $n$ and characteristic $p$ with a fixed double root and the fan of all tropical polynomials that have $0$ as a double root independently of the characteristic. We also compute, by pure tropical means, the number of vertices, edges and 2-faces of the Newton polytope of the discriminant of polynomials of degree $p$ in characteristic $p$.

During the last few years several new results on packing problems were obtained using a blend of tools from semidefinite optimization, polynomial optimization, and harmonic analysis. We survey some of these results and the techniques involved, concentrating on geometric packing problems such as the sphere-packing problem or the problem of packing regular tetrahedra in R^3.
Factoring the characteristic polynomial of a lattice

We introduce a new method for showing that the roots of the characteristic polynomial of certain finite lattices are all nonnegative integers. This method is based on the notion of a quotient of a poset which will be developed to explain this factorization. Our main theorem will give two simple conditions under which the characteristic polynomial factors with nonnegative integer roots. We will see that Stanley's Supersolvability Theorem is a corollary of this result. Additionally, we will prove a theorem which gives three conditions equivalent to factorization. To our knowledge, all other theorems in this area only give conditions which imply factorization. This theorem will be used to connect the generating function for increasing spanning forests of a graph to its chromatic polynomial. We finish by mentioning some other applications of quotients of posets as well as some open questions.

The order complex of inclusion poset $PF_n$ of Borel orbit closures in skew-symmetric matrices is investigated. It is shown that $PF_n$ is an EL-shellable poset, and furthermore, its order complex triangulates a ball. The rank-generating function of $PF_n$ is computed and the resulting polynomial is contrasted with the Hasse-Weil zeta function of the variety of skew-symmetric matrices over finite fields.

Matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of graph theory. In this paper we propose an analogous correspondence between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. We show that delta-matroids arise as the natural extension of graphic matroids to the setting of embedded graphs. We show that various basic ribbon graph operations and concepts have delta-matroid analogues, and illustrate how the connections between embedded graphs and delta-matroids can be exploited. Also, in direct analogy with the fact that The Tutte polynomial is matroidal, we show that several polynomials of embedded graphs from the literature, including the Las Vergnas, Bollabas-Riordan and Krushkal polynomials, are in fact delta-matroidal.

We prove a structure theorem for multiplicative functions which states that an arbitrary bounded multiplicative function can be decomposed into two terms, one that is approximately periodic and another that has small Gowers uniformity norm of an arbitrary degree. The proof uses tools from higher order Fourier analysis and some soft number theoretic input that comes in the form of an orthogonality criterion of Kátai. We use variants of this structure theorem to derive applications of number theoretic and combinatorial flavor: $(i)$ we give simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gowers norms (over $\mathbb{N}$) of a bounded multiplicative function to be zero, $(ii)$ generalizing a classical result of Daboussi and Delange we prove asymptotic orthogonality of multiplicative functions to "irrational" nilsequences, $(iii)$ we prove that for certain polynomials in two variables all "aperiodic" multiplicative functions satisfy Chowla's zero mean conjecture, $(iv)$ we give the first partition regularity results for homogeneous quadratic equations in three variables showing for example that on every partition of the integers into finitely many cells there exist distinct $x,y$ belonging to the same cell and $λ\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $16x^2+9y^2=λ^2$ and the same holds for the equation $x^2-xy+y^2=λ^2$.

We introduce a new approach to the enumeration of rational slope parking functions with respect to the area and a generalized dinv statistics, and relate the combinatorics of parking functions to that of affine permutations. We relate our construction to two previously known combinatorial constructions: Haglund's bijection exchanging the pairs of statistics (area, dinv) and (bounce, area) on Dyck paths, and Pak-Stanley labeling of the regions of k-Shi hyperplane arrangements by k-parking functions. Essentially, our approach can be viewed as a generalization and a unification of these two constructions. We also relate our combinatorial constructions to representation theory. We derive new formulas for the Poincare polynomials of certain affine Springer fibers and describe a connection to the theory of finite dimensional representations of DAHA and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials.
