Planar Posets that are Accessible from Below Have Dimension at Most 6
Planar posets can have arbitrarily large dimension. However, a planar poset of height $h$ has dimension at most $192h+96$, while a planar poset with $t$ minimal elements has dimension at most $2t+1$. In particular, a planar poset with a unique minimal element has dimension at most $3$. In this paper, we extend this result by showing that a planar poset has dimension at most $6$ if it has a plane diagram in which every minimal element is accessible from below.

Linear extension numbers of $n$-element posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We address the following natural but hitherto unstudied question: what are the possible linear extension numbers of an $n$-element poset? Let $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ denote the set of all positive integers that arise as the number of linear extensions of some $n$-element poset. We show that $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ skews towards the "small" end of the interval $[1,n!]$. More specifically, $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ contains all of the positive integers up to $\exp\left(c\frac{n}{\log n}\right)$ for some absolute constant $c$, and $|\mathbf{LE}(n) \cap ((n-1)!,n!]|<(n-3)!$. The proof of the former statement involves some intermediate number-theoretic results about the Stern-Brocot tree that are of independent interest.

Total positivity is a quantum phenomenon: the grassmannian case
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main aim of this paper is to establish a deep link between the totally nonnegative grassmannian and the quantum grassmannian. More precisely, under the assumption that the deformation parameter $q$ is transcendental, we show that "quantum positroids" are completely prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian $A$. As a consequence, we obtain that torus-invariant prime ideals in the quantum grassmannian are generated by polynormal sequences of quantum Plücker coordinates and give a combinatorial description of these generating sets. We also give a topological description of the poset of torus-invariant prime ideals in $A$, and prove a version of the orbit method for torus-invariant objects. Finally, we construct separating Ore sets for all torus-invariant primes in $A$. The latter is the first step in the Brown-Goodearl strategy to establish the orbit method for (quantum) grassmannians.

Smooth digraphs modulo primitive positive constructability and cyclic loop conditions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Finite smooth digraphs, that is, finite directed graphs without sources and sinks, can be partially ordered via pp-constructability. We give a complete description of this poset and, in particular, we prove that it is a distributive lattice. Moreover, we show that in order to separate two smooth digraphs in our poset it suffices to show that the polymorphism clone of one of the digraphs satisfies a prime cyclic loop condition that is not satisfied by the polymorphism clone of the other. Furthermore, we prove that the poset of cyclic loop ordered by their strength for clones is a distributive lattice, too.

Hypersimplicial subdivisions
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 28:1 (2022), article 4 • View PublicationBIB
Let $π:{\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^d$ be any linear projection, let $A$ be the image of the standard basis. Motivated by Postnikov's study of postitive Grassmannians via plabic graphs and Galashin's connection of plabic graphs to slices of zonotopal tilings of 3-dimensional cyclic zonotopes, we study the poset of subdivisions induced by the restriction of $π$ to the $k$-th hypersimplex, for $k=1,\dots,n-1$. We show that: - For arbitrary $A$ and for $k\le d+1$, the corresponding fiber polytope $\mathcal F^{(k)}(A)$ is normally isomorphic to the Minkowski sum of the secondary polytopes of all subsets of $A$ of size $\max\{d+2,n-k+1\}$. - When $A={\mathbf P}_n$ is the vertex set of an $n$-gon, we answer the Baues question in the positive: the inclusion of the poset of $π$-coherent subdivisions into the poset of all $π$-induced subdivisions is a homotopy equivalence. - When $A=\mathbf{C}(n,d)$ is the vertex set of a cyclic $d$-polytope with $d$ odd and any $n \ge d+3$, there are non-lifting (and even more so, non-separated) $π$-induced subdivisions for $k=2$.

Fractional Local Dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
The original notion of dimension for posets was introduced by Dushnik and Miller in 1941 and has been studied extensively in the literature. In 1992, Brightwell and Scheinerman developed the notion of fractional dimension as the natural linear programming relaxation of the Dushnik-Miller concept. In 2016, Ueckerdt introduced the concept of local dimension, and in just three years, several research papers studying this new parameter have been published. In this paper, we introduce and study fractional local dimension. As suggested by the terminology, our parameter is a common generalization of fractional dimension and local dimension. For a pair $(n,d)$ with $2\le d<n$, we consider the poset $P(1,d;n)$ consisting of all $1$-element and $d$-element subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ partially ordered by inclusion. This poset has fractional dimension $d+1$, but for fixed $d\ge2$, its local dimension goes to infinity with $n$. On the other hand, we show that as $n$ tends to infinity, the fractional local dimension of $P(1,d;n)$ tends to a value $\text{FLD}(d)$ which we will be able to determine exactly. For all $d\ge2$, $\text{FLD}(d)$ is strictly less than $d+1$, and for large $d$, $\text{FLD}(d)\sim d/(\log d-\log\log d-o(1))$. As an immediate corollary, we show that if $P$ is a poset, and $d$ is the maximum degree of a vertex in the comparability graph of $P$, then the fractional local dimension of $P$, is at most $2+\text{FLD}(d).$ Our arguments use both discrete and continuous methods.

Multivariate polynomials for generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the notion of Mahonian statistic on acyclic posets, we introduce a $q$-analogue of the $h$-polynomial of a simple generalized permutohedron. We focus primarily on the case of nestohedra and on explicit computations for many interesting examples, such as $S_n$-invariant nestohedra, graph associahedra, and Stanley--Pitman polytopes. For the usual (Stasheff) associahedron, our generalization yields an alternative $q$-analogue to the well-studied Narayana numbers.

Whitney Numbers for Poset Cones
Hyperplane arrangements dissect $\mathbb{R}^n$ into connected components called chambers, and a well-known theorem of Zaslavsky counts chambers as a sum of nonnegative integers called Whitney numbers of the first kind. His theorem generalizes to count chambers within any cone defined as the intersection of a collection of halfspaces from the arrangement, leading to a notion of Whitney numbers for each cone. This paper focuses on cones within the braid arrangement, consisting of the reflecting hyperplanes $x_i=x_j$ inside $\mathbb{R}^n$ for the symmetric group, thought of as the type $A_{n-1}$ reflection group. Here cones correspond to posets, chambers within the cone correspond to linear extensions of the poset, and the Whitney numbers of the cone interestingly refine the number of linear extensions of the poset. We interpret this refinement for all posets as counting linear extensions according to a statistic that generalizes the number of left-to-right maxima of a permutation. When the poset is a disjoint union of chains, we interpret this refinement differently, using Foata's theory of cycle decomposition for multiset permutations, leading to a simple generating function compiling these Whitney numbers.

Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.

Upward-closed hereditary families in the dominance order
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23, no. 3, Graph Theory (January 20, 2022) dmtcs:5666 • View PublicationBIB
The majorization relation orders the degree sequences of simple graphs into posets called dominance orders. As shown by Ruch and Gutman (1979) and Merris (2002), the degree sequences of threshold and split graphs form upward-closed sets within the dominance orders they belong to, i.e., any degree sequence majorizing a split or threshold sequence must itself be split or threshold, respectively. Motivated by the fact that threshold graphs and split graphs have characterizations in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs, we define a class $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs to be dominance monotone if whenever no realization of $e$ contains an element $\mathcal{F}$ as an induced subgraph, and $d$ majorizes $e$, then no realization of $d$ induces an element of $\mathcal{F}$. We present conditions necessary for a set of graphs to be dominance monotone, and we identify the dominance monotone sets of order at most 3.

The distinguishing number and distinguishing chromatic number for posets
In this paper we introduce the concepts of the distinguishing number and the distinguishing chromatic number of a poset. For a distributive lattice $L$ and its set $Q_L$ of join-irreducibles, we use classic lattice theory to show that any linear extension of $Q_L$ generates a distinguishing 2-coloring of $L$. We prove general upper bounds for the distinguishing chromatic number and particular upper bounds for the Boolean lattice and for divisibility lattices. In addition, we show that the distinguishing number of any twin-free Cohen-Macaulay planar lattice is at most 2.

On forbidden poset problems in the linear lattice
In this note, we determine the maximum size of a $\{V_{k}, Λ_{l}\}$-free family in the lattice of vector subspaces of a finite vector space both in the non-induced case as well as the induced case, for a large range of parameters $k$ and $l$. These results generalize earlier work by Shahriari and Yu. We also prove a general LYM-type lemma for the linear lattice which resolves a conjecture of Shahriari and Yu.

Asymptotic Semigroups and Two-sided Weak Orders
Various partial orders related to the structures of dual canonical monoids are investigated. It is shown that the nilpotent variety of a dual canonical monoid is equidimensional; its dimension is found. It is shown in type A that certain intervals of the Putcha poset of a dual canonical monoid are isomorphic to the Renner monoids of matrices. The notion of a two-sided weak order on a normal reductive monoid is introduced. A criterion, in terms of type maps, for the covering relations in a two-sided weak order to have degree 2 is found. It is shown that, for the unique equivariant divisor of a dual canonical monoid (the asymptotic semigroup), the covering relations of the two-sided weak order are always of degree 1. These computations provide new insights for the two-sided weak orders on Coxeter groups. In type A, some enumerative results for the covering relations are presented.

Antichain generating polynomials of posets
This paper gives a formula for the antichain generating polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ of the poset $[k]\times Q$, where $[k]$ is an arbitrary chain and $Q$ is any finite graded poset. When $Q$ specializes to be a connected minuscule poet, which was classified by Proctor in 1984, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ bears nice properties. For instance, we will recover the $B_n$-Narayana polynomial and the $D_{2n+2}$-Narayana polynomial. We collect evidence for the conjecture that whenever $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times P}(x)$ is palindromic, it must be $γ$-positive. Moreover, the family $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [m]}$ should be real-rooted and $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [n+1]}$ should be $γ$-positive. We also conjecture that $\mathcal{N}_{Q}(x)$ is log-concave (thus unimodal) for any connected Peck poset $Q$.

The covering lemma and $q$-analogues of extremal set theory problems
We prove a general lemma (inspired by a lemma of Holroyd and Talbot) about the connection of the largest cardinalities (or weight) of structures satisfying some hereditary property and substructures satisfying the same hereditary property. We use it to show how results concerning forbidden subposet problems in the Boolean poset imply analogous results in the poset of subspaces of a finite vector space. We also study generalized forbidden subposet problems in the poset of subspaces.

On the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring of the chain polytope of a poset
Let P be a poset, O(P) the order polytope of P and C(P) the chain polytope of P. In this paper, we study the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring K[C(P)] of C(P) over a field K and characterize the level (resp. anticanonical level) property of K[C(P)] by a combinatorial structure of P. In particular, we show that if K[C(P)] is level (resp. anticanonical level), then so is K[O(P)]. We exhibit examples which show the converse does not hold. Moreover, we show that the symbolic powers of the canonical ideal of K[C(P)] are identical with ordinary ones and degrees of the generators of the canonical and anticanonical ideals are consecutive integers.

$N_\infty$-operads and associahedra
Published in Pacific J. Math. 315 (2021) 285-304 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a new combinatorial approach to studying the collection of N-infinity-operads in G-equivariant homotopy theory for G a finite cyclic group. In particular, we show that for G the cyclic group of order p^n the natural order on the collection of N-infinity-operads stands in bijection with the poset structure of the (n+1)-associahedron. We further provide a lower bound for the number of possible N-infinity-operads for any finite cyclic group G.

Proofs of Conjectures about Pattern-Avoiding Linear Extensions
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 4, Combinatorics (October 2, 2019) dmtcs:5438 • View PublicationBIB
After fixing a canonical ordering (or labeling) of the elements of a finite poset, one can associate each linear extension of the poset with a permutation. Some recent papers consider specific families of posets and ask how many linear extensions give rise to permutations that avoid certain patterns. We build off of two of these papers. We first consider pattern avoidance in $k$-ary heaps, where we obtain a general result that proves a conjecture of Levin, Pudwell, Riehl, and Sandberg in a special case. We then prove some conjectures that Anderson, Egge, Riehl, Ryan, Steinke, and Vaughan made about pattern-avoiding linear extensions of rectangular posets.
On the poset of King-Non-Attacking permutations

A king-non-attacking permutation is a permutation $π\in S_n$ such that $|π(i)-π(i-1)|\neq 1$ for each $i \in \{2,\dots,n\}$. We investigate the structure of the poset of these permutations under the containment relation, and also provide some results on its Möbius function.

Some enumerative properties of a class of Fibonacci-like cubes
A filter lattice is a distributive lattice formed by all filters of a poset in the anti-inclusion order. We study the combinatorial properties of the Hasse diagrams of filter lattices of certain posets, so called Fibonacci-like cubes, in this paper. Several enumerative polynomials, e.g.\ rank generating function, cube polynomials and degree sequence polynomials are obtained. Some of these results relate to Fibonacci sequence and Padovan sequence.
