Riemann-Hilbert problem and the discrete Bessel kernel
We use discrete analogs of Riemann-Hilbert problem's methods to derive the discrete Bessel kernel which describes the poissonized Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. To do this we define discrete analogs of a Riemann-Hilbert problem and of an integrable integral operator and show that computing the resolvent of a discrete integrable operator can be reduced to solving a corresponding discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem.
We also give an example, explicitly solvable in terms of classical special functions, when a discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem converges in a certain scaling limit to a conventional one; the example originates from the representation theory of the infinite symmetric group.

In this paper we introduce and investigate a one-parameter family of polynomials. They are semisymmetric, i.e. symmetric in the variables with odd and even index separately. In fact, the family forms a basis of the space of semisymmetric polynomials. For two values of the parameter r, namely r=1/2 and r=1, the polynomials have a representation theoretic meaning. In general, they form the semisymmetric analogue of (shifted) Jack polynomials.

The purpose of this paper is to present an interpretation for the decomposition of the tensor product of two or more irreducible representations of GL(N) in terms of a system of quantum particles. Our approach is based on a certain scattering matrix that satisfies a Yang-Baxter type equation. The corresponding piecewise-linear transformations of parameters give a solution to the tetrahedron equation. These transformation maps are naturally related to the dual canonical bases for modules over the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(sl_n)$. A byproduct of our construction is an explicit description for the cone of Kashiwara's parametrizations of dual canonical bases. This solves a problem posed by Berenstein and Zelevinsky. We present a graphical interpretation of the scattering matrices in terms of web functions, which are related to honeycombs of Knutson and Tao.

Recently Tracy and Widom conjectured [math.CO/9904042] and Johansson proved [math.CO/9906120] that the expected shape λof the semi-standard tableau produced by a random word in k letters is asymptotically the spectrum of a random traceless k by k GUE matrix. In this article we give two arguments for this fact. In the first argument, we realize the random matrix itself as a quantum random variable on the space of random words, if this space is viewed as a quantum state space. In the second argument, we show that the distribution of λis asymptotically given by the usual local limit theorem, but the resulting Gaussian is disguised by an extra polynomial weight and by reflecting walls. Both arguments more generally apply to an arbitrary finite-dimensional representation V of an arbitrary simple Lie algebra g. In the original question, V is the defining representation of g = su(k).

We study the statistics of a system of N random levels with integer values, in the presence of a logarithmic repulsive potential of Dyson type. This probleme arises in sums over representations (Young tableaux) of GL(N) in various matrix problems and in the study of statistics of partitions for the permutation group. The model is generalized to include an external source and its correlators are found in closed form for any N. We reproduce the density of levels in the large N and double scaling limits and the universal correlation functions in Dyson's short-distance scaling limit. We also study the statistics of small levels.
A straightening algorithm for row-convex tableaux

We produce a new basis for the Schur and Weyl modules associated to a row-convex shape, D. The basis is indexed by new class of "straight" tableaux which we introduce by weakening the usual requirements for standard tableaux. Spanning is proved via a new straightening algorithm for expanding elements of the representation into this basis. For skew shapes, this algorithm specializes to the classical straightening law. The new straight basis is used to produce bases for flagged Schur and Weyl modules, to provide Groebner and sagbi bases for the homogeneous coordinate rings of some configuration varieties and to produce a flagged branching rule for row-convex representations. Systematic use of supersymmetric letterplace techniques enables the representation theoretic results to be applied to representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra as well as to the general linear group.
Zeta Functions Of Discrete Groups Acting On Trees

This paper generalizes Bass' work on zeta functions for uniform tree lattices. Using the theory of von Neumann algebras, machinery is developed to define the zeta function of a discrete group of automorphisms of a bounded degree tree. The main theorems relate the zeta function to determinants of operators defined on edges or vertices of the tree. A zeta function associated to a non-uniform tree lattice with appropriate Hilbert representation is defined. Zeta functions are defined for infinite graphs with a cocompact or finite covolume group action.

Basil Gordon, in the sixties, and George Andrews, in the seventies, generalized the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to higher moduli. These identities arise in many areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. One of these areas is representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras, where various known interpretations of these identities have led to interesting applications. Motivated by their connections with Lie algebra representation theory, we give a new interpretation of a sum related to generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of multi-color partitions.
Conjugate Bailey pairs
In this paper it is shown that the one-dimensional configuration sums of the solvable lattice models of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester and the string functions associated with admissible representations of the affine Lie algebra A$_1^{(1)}$ as introduced by Kac and Wakimoto can be exploited to yield a very general class of conjugate Bailey pairs. Using the recently established fermionic or constant-sign expressions for the one-dimensional configuration sums, our result is employed to derive fermionic expressions for fractional-level string functions, parafermion characters and A$_1^{(1)}$ branching functions. In addition, $q$-series identities are obtained whose Lie algebraic and/or combinatorial interpretation is still lacking.

Recently the second named author discovered a combinatorial identity in the context of vertex representations of quantum Kac-Moody algebras. We give a direct and elementary proof of this identity. Our method is to show a related identity of distributions.

We suggest an hierarchy of all the results known so far about the connection of the asymptotics of combinatorial or representation theoretic problems with ``beta=2 ensembles'' arising in the random matrix theory. We show that all such results are, essentially, degenerations of one general situation arising from so-called generalized regular representations of the infinite symmetric group.

I show that there exist universal constants $C(r) < \infty$ such that, for all loopless graphs $G$ of maximum degree $\le r$, the zeros (real or complex) of the chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$ lie in the disc $|q| < C(r)$. Furthermore, $C(r) \le 7.963906... r$. This result is a corollary of a more general result on the zeros of the Potts-model partition function $Z_G(q, {v_e})$ in the complex antiferromagnetic regime $|1 + v_e| \le 1$. The proof is based on a transformation of the Whitney-Tutte-Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation of $Z_G(q, {v_e})$ to a polymer gas, followed by verification of the Dobrushin-Kotecký-Preiss condition for nonvanishing of a polymer-model partition function. I also show that, for all loopless graphs $G$ of second-largest degree $\le r$, the zeros of $P_G(q)$ lie in the disc $|q| < C(r) + 1$. Along the way, I give a simple proof of a generalized (multivariate) Brown-Colbourn conjecture on the zeros of the reliability polynomial for the special case of series-parallel graphs.

We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering and normalizing, an N -> infinity limit which is equal to the distribution function for the largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of k x k hermitian matrices of trace zero.
On Lunn-Senior's Mathematical Model of Isomerism in Organic Chemistry. Part I
The aim of this paper is to present a generalization of Lunn-Senior's mathematical model of isomerism in organic chemistry. The main idea of Lunn and Senior is that if the type of isomerism is fixed, a molecule with a fixed skeleton and d univalent substituents has a symmetry group $W\leq S_d$ which is generally not the molecule's 3-dimensional symmetry group. The unit character of W induces a representation of the symmetric group $S_d$ which governs the combinatorics of the isomers of the given molecule. Lunn-Senior's thesis is that certain non-negative integers established by this representation are upper boundaries of the corresponding numbers, yielded by the experiment (and often coincide with them). Moreover, the authors define (in a particular case) a partial order among the objects of the model, such that some simple substitution reactions correspond to inequalities. These two groups of data determine the group W, and produce so called "type properties" of the molecule (properties which do not depend on the nature of the univalent substituents). Our hypothesis is that if we replace the unit character of $W$ by any one-dimensional character of $W$ (thus we count only a part of the isomers - those having a maximum property), we also get a type property of the molecule. An instance of that is the inventory of the stereoisomers called chiral pairs. The formalism can be generalized naturally and produces some preliminary chemical results. Especially the partial order is defined and studied in the general case and indicates the possible genetic relations among the corresponding molecules. An important result of E. Ruch which connects the dominance order among partitions and the existence of chiral pairs is obtained as a consequence of a more general statement.
Principal Nilpotent pairs in a semisimple Lie algebra, I

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to certain pairs of commuting nilpotent elements in a semisimple Lie algebra that enjoy quite remarkable properties and which are expected to play a major role in Representation theory. The properties of these pairs and their role is similar to those of the principal nilpotents. To any principal nilpotent pair we associate a two-parameter analogue of the Kostant partition function, and propose the corresponding two-parameter analogue of the weight multiplicity formula.
In a different direction, each principal nilpotent pair gives rise to a harmonic polynomial on the Cartesian square of the Cartan subalgebra, that transforms under an irreducible representation of the Weyl group. In the special case of sl_n, the conjugacy classes of principal nilpotent pairs and the irreducible representations of the Symmetric group, S_n, are both parametrised (in a compatible way) by Young diagrams. In general, our theory provides a natural generalization to arbitrary Weyl groups of the classical construction of simple S_n-modules in terms of Young's symmetrisers.

The Jacobi-Trudi formula implies some interesting quadratic identities for characters of representations of $gl_n$. Earlier work of Kirillov and Reshetikhin proposed a generalization of these identities to the other classical Lie algebras, and conjectured that the characters of certain finite-dimensional representations of $U_q(g-affine)$ satisfy it. Here we use a positivity argument to show that the generalized identities have only one solution.

We study the explicit formula of Lusztig's integral forms of the level one quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ in the endomorphism ring of symmetric functions in infinitely many variables tensored with the group algebra of $\mathbb Z$. Schur functions are realized as certain orthonormal basis vectors in the vertex representation associated to the standard Heisenberg algebra. In this picture the Littlewood-Richardson rule is expressed by integral formulas, and is used to define the action of Lusztig's $\mathbb Z[q, q]$-form of $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ on Schur polynomials.
A Generalization of Redfield's Master Theorem
Generalizations of Redfield's master theorem and superposition theorem are proved by using decomposition of the tensor product of several induced monomial representations of the symmetric group $S_d$ into transitive constituents. As direct consequences, one obtains several graphical corollaries. Given graphs $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, with $d$ vertices, together with their automorphism groups $W_1\leq S_d,\hdots, W_k\leq S_d$, one can find the number of superpositions of $Γ_1,\hdots ,Γ_k$, whose automorphism groups satisfy one of the following conditions: (1) the groups consist of even permutations; (2) the groups are trivial, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is cyclic; (3) the groups are of odd order, in case at least one of $W_m$'s is dihedral and its order is not divisible by 4; (4) the groups are of order dividing a natural number $r$, in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal solvable subgroup of order $r$, such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $r$; (5) the groups are $q$-groups ($q$ is a prime), in case at least one of $W_m$'s has a normal $q$-subgroup such that the corresponding factor-group is cyclic of order relatively prime to $q$.
A Generalization of Polya's Enumeration Theorem or the Secret Life of Certain Index Sets
Polya's fundamental enumeration theorem is generalized in terms of Schur-Macdonald's theory (S-MT) of invariant matrices. Given a permutation group $W\leq S_d$ and a one-dimensional character $χ$ of $W$, the polynomial functor $F_χ$ corresponding via S-MT to the induced monomial representation $U_χ= ind_W^{S_d}(χ)$ of $S_d$, is studied. It turns out that the characteristic $ch(F_χ)$ is the weighted inventory of some set $J(χ)$ of $W$-orbits in the integer-valued hypercube $[0,\infty)^d$. The elements of $J(χ) can be distinguished among all $W$-orbits by a maximum property. The identity $ch(F_χ) = ch(U_χ)$ of both characteristics is a consequence of S-MT. Polya's theorem can be obtained from the above identity by specialization $χ=1_W$, where $1_W$ is the unit character of $W$.
A New Representation of the Riemann Zeta Function $ζ(s)$
A generalization of a well-known relation between the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ and Bernoulli numbers $B_n$ is obtained. The formula is a new representation of the Riemann zeta function in terms of a nested series of Bernoulli numbers.
