The action of the Weyl group on the $E_8$ root system
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be the graph on the roots of the $E_8$ root system, where any two distinct vertices $e$ and $f$ are connected by an edge with color equal to the inner product of $e$ and $f$. For any set $c$ of colors, let $Γ_c$ be the subgraph of $Γ$ consisting of all the $240$ vertices, and all the edges whose color lies in $c$. We consider cliques, i.e., complete subgraphs, of $Γ$ that are either monochromatic, or of size at most $3$, or a maximal clique in $Γ_c$ for some color set $c$, or whose vertices are the vertices of a face of the $E_8$ root polytope. We prove that, apart from two exceptions, two such cliques are conjugate under the automorphism group of $Γ$ if and only if they are isomorphic as colored graphs. Moreover, for an isomorphism $f$ from one such clique $K$ to another, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for $f$ to extend to an automorphism of $Γ$, in terms of the restrictions of $f$ to certain special subgraphs of $K$ of size at most 7.
Analogs of Schur functions for rank two Weyl groups obtained from grid-like posets
In prior work, the authors, along with M. McClard, R. A. Proctor, and N. J. Wildberger, studied certain distributive lattice models for the `Weyl bialternants' (aka `Weyl characters') associated with the rank two root systems/Weyl groups. These distributive lattices were uniformly described as lattices of order ideals taken from certain grid-like posets, although the arguments connecting the lattices to Weyl bialternants were case-by-case depending on the type of the rank two root system. Using this connection with Weyl bialternants, these lattices were shown to be rank symmetric and rank unimodal, and their rank generating functions were shown to have beautiful quotient-of-products expressions. Here, these results are re-derived from scratch using completely uniform and elementary combinatorial reasoning in conjunction with some combinatorial methodology developed elsewhere by the second listed author.

Branching Rules For Splint Root Systems
A root system is splint if it is a decomposition into a union of two root systems. Examples of such root systems arise naturally in studying embeddings of reductive Lie subalgebras into simple Lie algebras. Given a splint root system, one can try to understand its branching rule. In this paper we discuss methods to understand such branching rules, and give precise formulas for specific cases, including the restriction functor from the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$ to $\mathfrak{sl}_3$.

Exponents Associated with $Y$-Systems and their Relationship with $q$-Series
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 028, 42 pages • View PublicationBIB
Let $X_r$ be a finite type Dynkin diagram, and $\ell$ be a positive integer greater than or equal to two. The $Y$-system of type $X_r$ with level $\ell$ is a system of algebraic relations, whose solutions have been proved to have periodicity. For any pair $(X_r, \ell)$, we define an integer sequence called exponents using formulation of the $Y$-system by cluster algebras. We give a conjectural formula expressing the exponents by the root system of type $X_r$, and prove this conjecture for $(A_1,\ell)$ and $(A_r, 2)$ cases. We point out that a specialization of this conjecture gives a relationship between the exponents and the asymptotic dimension of an integrable highest weight module of an affine Lie algebra. We also give a point of view from $q$-series identities for this relationship.

Tutte Polynomial of Ideal Arrangement
The Tutte polynomial is originally a bivariate polynomial enumerating the colorings of a graph and of its dual graph. But it reveals more of the internal structure of the graph like its number of forests, of spanning subgraphs, and of acyclic orientations. In 2007, Ardila extended the notion of Tutte polynomial to the hyperplane arrangements, and computed the Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems for a certain prime power of the first variable. In this article, we compute Tutte polynomials of ideal arrangements. Those arrangements were introduced in 2006 by Sommers and Tymoczko, and are defined for ideals of root systems. For the ideals of the classical root systems, we bring a slight improvement of the finite field method showing that it can applied on any finite field whose cardinality is not a minor of the matrix associated to a hyperplane arrangement. Computing the minor set associated to an ideal of a classical root system permits us particularly to deduce the Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems. For the ideals of the exceptional root systems of type $G_2$, $F_4$, and $E_6$, we use the formula of Crapo.

Shellability of generalized Dowling posets
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 171, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
A generalization of Dowling lattices was recently introduced by Bibby and Gadish, in a work on orbit configuration spaces. The authors left open the question as to whether these posets are shellable. In this paper we prove EL-shellability and use it to determine the homotopy type. Our result generalizes shellability of Dowling lattices and of posets of layers of abelian arrangements defined by root systems. We also show that subposets corresponding to invariant subarrangements are not shellable in general.

Gradedness of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$
A rook placement is a subset of a root system consisting of positive roots with pairwise non-positive inner products. To each rook placement in a root system one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the Borel subgroup of a reductive algebraic group with this root system. Degenerations of such orbits induce a natural partial order on the set of rook placements. We study combinatorial structure of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$ with respect to a slightly different order and prove that this poset is graded.

Reflexive polytopes arising from bipartite graphs with $γ$-positivity associated to interior polynomials
Published in Selecta Mathematica. New Series 26 (2020), 59 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce polytopes ${\mathcal B}_G$ arising from root systems $B_n$ and finite graphs $G$, and study their combinatorial and algebraic properties. In particular, it is shown that ${\mathcal B}_G$ is reflexive if and only if $G$ is bipartite. Moreover, in the case, ${\mathcal B}_G$ has a regular unimodular triangulation. This implies that the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is palindromic and unimodal when $G$ is bipartite. Furthermore, we discuss stronger properties, namely the $γ$-positivity and the real-rootedness of the $h^*$-polynomials. In fact, if $G$ is bipartite, then the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is $γ$-positive and its $γ$-polynomial is given by an interior polynomial (a version of the Tutte polynomial for a hypergraph). The $h^*$-polynomial is real-rooted if and only if the corresponding interior polynomial is real-rooted. From a counterexample to Neggers--Stanley conjecture, we construct a bipartite graph $G$ whose $h^*$-polynomial is not real-rooted but $γ$-positive, and coincides with the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere.
Characterization of queer supercrystals
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory, Series A 173 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We provide a characterization of the crystal bases for the quantum queer superalgebra recently introduced by Grantcharov et al.. This characterization is a combination of local queer axioms generalizing Stembridge's local axioms for crystal bases for simply-laced root systems, which were recently introduced by Assaf and Oguz, with further axioms and a new graph $G$ characterizing the relations of the type $A$ components of the queer crystal. We provide a counterexample to Assaf's and Oguz' conjecture that the local queer axioms uniquely characterize the queer supercrystal. We obtain a combinatorial description of the graph $G$ on the type $A$ components by providing explicit combinatorial rules for the odd queer operators on certain highest weight elements.
Extended Weyl groups, Hurwitz transitivity and weighted projective lines I: Generalities and the tubular case
We start the systematic study of extended Weyl groups, and continue the combinatorial description of thick subcategories in hereditary categories started by Ingalls-Thomas, Igusa-Schiffler-Thomas and Krause. We show that for a weighted projective line $\mathbb{X}$ there exists an order preserving bijection between the thick subcategories of $\mathrm{coh}(\mathbb{X})$ generated by an exceptional sequence and a subposet of the interval poset of a Coxeter transformation $c$ in the Weyl group of a simply-laced extended root system if the Hurwitz action is transitive on the reduced reflection factorizations of $c$ that generate the Weyl group. By using combinatorial and group theoretical tools we show that this assumption on the transitivity of the Hurwitz action is fulfilled for a weighted projective line $\mathbb{X}$ of tubular type.

The action of a Coxeter element on an affine root system
Published • View PublicationBIB
The characterization of orbits of roots under the action of a Coxeter element is a fundamental tool in the study of finite root systems and their reflection groups. This paper develops the analogous tool in the affine setting, adding detail and uniformity to a result of Dlab and Ringel.

Root systems in number fields

We classify the types of root systems $R$ in the rings of integers of number fields $K$ such that the Weyl group $W(R)$ lies in the group $\mathcal L(K)$ generated by ${\rm Aut} (K)$ and multiplications by the elements of $K^*$. We also classify the Weyl groups of roots systems of rank $n$ which are isomorphic to a subgroup of $\mathcal L(K)$ for a number field $K$ of degree $n$ over $\mathbb Q$.

Borel-de Siebenthal theory for affine reflection systems
Published in Mosc. Math. J. 21 (2021), no. 1, 99-127 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a Borel-de Siebenthal theory for affine reflection systems by classifying their maximal closed subroot systems. Affine reflection systems (introduced by Loos and Neher) provide a unifying framework for root systems of finite-dimensional semi-simple Lie algebras, affine and toroidal Lie algebras, and extended affine Lie algebras. In the special case of nullity $k$ toroidal Lie algebras, we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between maximal closed subroot systems with full gradient and triples $(q,(b_i),H)$, where $q$ is a prime number, $(b_i)$ is a $n$-tuple of integers in the interval $[0,q-1]$ and $H$ is a $(k\times k)$ Hermite normal form matrix with determinant $q$. This generalizes the $k=1$ result of Dyer and Lehrer in the setting of affine Lie algebras.

Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra and root systems, II
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory, 23, no.4 (2020), 1487-1498 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a simple Lie algebra with a Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak b$ and $\mathfrak{Ab}$ the set of abelian ideals of $\mathfrak b$. Let $Δ^+$ be the corresponding set of positive roots. We continue our study of combinatorial properties of the partition of $\mathfrak{Ab}$ parameterised by the long positive roots. In particular, the union of an arbitrary set of maximal abelian ideals is described, if $\mathfrak g\ne\mathfrak{sl}_n$. We also characterise the greatest lower bound of two positive roots, when it exists, and point out interesting subposets of $Δ^+$ that are modular lattices.

Characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals and signed graphs of classical root systems
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 79 (2019), 179-192 • View PublicationBIB
With a main tool is signed graphs, we give a full description of the characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals of classical root systems ($ABCD$) with respect to the integer and root lattices. As a result, we obtain a full description of the characteristic polynomials of the toric arrangements defined by these ideals. As an application, we provide a combinatorial verification to the fact that the characteristic polynomial of every ideal subarrangement factors over the dual partition of the ideal in the classical cases.

The weak order on Weyl posets
Published in Canad. J. Math., 72(4):867-899, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We define a natural lattice structure on all subsets of a finite root system that extends the weak order on the elements of the corresponding Coxeter group. For crystallographic root systems, we show that the subposet of this lattice induced by antisymmetric closed subsets of roots is again a lattice. We then study further subposets of this lattice which naturally correspond to the elements, the intervals and the faces of the permutahedron and the generalized associahedra of the corresponding Weyl group. These results extend to arbitrary finite crystallographic root systems the recent results of G. Chatel, V. Pilaud and V. Pons on the weak order on posets and its induced subposets.

Skew divided difference operators in the Nichols algebra associated to a finite Coxeter group
Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system with root system $R$ and with set of positive roots $R^+$. For $α\in R$, $v,w\in W$, we denote by $\partial_α$, $\partial_w$ and $\partial_{w/v}$ the divided difference operators and skew divided difference operators acting on the coinvariant algebra of $W$. Generalizing the work of Liu, we prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In fact, we prove the stronger and analogous statement in the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model for Schubert calculus on $W$ after Bazlov. We draw consequences of this theorem on saturated chains in the Bruhat order, and partially treat the question when $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a monomial in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In an appendix, we study related combinatorics on shuffle elements and Bruhat intervals of length two.
On the Tits cone of a Weyl groupoid
We translate the axioms of a Weyl groupoid with (not necessarily finite) root system in terms of arrangements. The result is a correspondence between Weyl groupoids permitting a root system and Tits arrangements satisfying an integrality condition which we call the crystallographic property.

A positive formula for the Ehrhart-like polynomials from root system chip-firing
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, 2(6), 2019 • View PublicationBIB
In earlier work in collaboration with Pavel Galashin and Thomas McConville we introduced a version of chip-firing for root systems. Our investigation of root system chip-firing led us to define certain polynomials analogous to Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytopes, which we termed the symmetric and truncated Ehrhart-like polynomials. We conjectured that these polynomials have nonnegative integer coefficients. Here we affirm "half" of this positivity conjecture by providing a positive, combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the symmetric Ehrhart-like polynomials. This formula depends on a subtle integrality property of slices of permutohedra, and in turn a lemma concerning dilations of projections of root polytopes, which both may be of independent interest. We also discuss how our formula very naturally suggests a conjecture for the coefficients of the truncated Ehrhart-like polynomials that turns out to be false in general, but which may hold in some cases.

The Weyl-Kac weight formula
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 78B (2017), Article #77 • Search Publication
We provide the first formulae for the weights of all simple highest weight modules over Kac-Moody algebras. For generic highest weights, we present a formula for the weights of simple modules similar to the Weyl-Kac character formula. For the remaining highest weights, the formula fails in a striking way, suggesting the existence of 'multiplicity-free' Macdonald identities for affine root systems.
