The Schur-positivity order on skew shapes is defined by B \leq A if the difference s_A - s_B is Schur-positive. It is an open problem to determine those connected skew shapes that are maximal with respect to this ordering. A strong necessary condition for the Schur-positivity of s_A - s_B is that the support of B is contained in that of A, where the support of B is defined to be the set of partitions lambda for which s_lambda appears in the Schur expansion of s_B. We show that to determine the maximal connected skew shapes in the Schur-positivity order and this support containment order, it suffices to consider a special class of ribbon shapes. We explicitly determine the support for these ribbon shapes, thereby determining the maximal connected skew shapes in the support containment order.

We give several explicit combinatorial formulas for the expansion of k-Schur functions indexed by maximal rectangles in terms of the standard basis of the affine nilCoxeter algebra. Using our result, we also show a commutation relation of k-Schur functions corresponding to rectangles with the generators of the affine nilCoxeter algebra.
Dual equivalence and Schur positivity
We define dual equivalence for any collection of combinatorial objects endowed with a descent set, and we show that giving a dual equivalence establishes the symmetry and Schur positivity of the quasi-symmetric generating function. We give an explicit formula for the Schur expansion of the generating function in terms of distinguished elements of the dual equivalence classes. These concepts and proofs simplify in the ubiquitous case when the collection of objects has a sufficiently nice reading word.

The spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg magnet is considered for the case of the anisotropy parameter tending to infinity (so-called, Ising limit). A thermal correlation function of the ferromagnetic string is calculated over the ground state. The approach to the calculation of the correlation functions in the limit of infinite anisotropy is based on the observation that the wave function is expressed in terms of the symmetric Schur functions. It is demonstrated that at low temperatures the amplitude of the asymptotical expression of this correlation function is proportional to the squared numbers of strict boxed plane partitions.

We study the class $\mathcal C$ of symmetric functions whose coefficients in the Schur basis can be described by generating functions for sets of tableaux with fixed shape. Included in this class are the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, $k$-atoms, and Stanley symmetric functions; functions whose Schur coefficients encode combinatorial, representation theoretic and geometric information. While Schur functions represent the cohomology of the Grassmannian variety of $GL_n$, Grothendieck functions $\{G_λ\}$ represent the $K$-theory of the same space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the coefficients when any element of $\mathcal C$ is expanded in the $G$-basis or the basis dual to $\{G_λ\}$.
New Formulas and Conjectures for the Nabla Operator
The operator nabla, introduced by Garsia and the author, plays a crucial role in many aspect of the study of diagonal harmonics. Besides giving several new formulas involving this operator, we show how one is lead to representation theoretic explanations for conjectures about the effect of this operator on Schur functions.

An explicit rule is given for the product of the degree two class with an arbitrary Schubert class in the torus-equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannian. In addition a Pieri rule (the Schubert expansion of the product of a special Schubert class with an arbitrary one) is established for the equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannians of SL_n and a similar formula is conjectured for Sp_{2n} and SO_{2n+1}. For SL_n the formula is explicit and positive. By a theorem of Peterson these compute certain products of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of flag varieties. The SL_n Pieri rule is used in our recent definition of k-double Schur functions and affine double Schur functions.

In this paper we classify all Schur functions and skew Schur functions that are multiplicity free when expanded in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions, termed F-multiplicity free. Combinatorially, this is equivalent to classifying all skew shapes whose standard Young tableaux have distinct descent sets. We then generalize our setting, and classify all F-multiplicity free quasisymmetric Schur functions with one or two terms in the expansion, or one or two parts in the indexing composition. This identifies composition shapes such that all standard composition tableaux of that shape have distinct descent sets. We conclude by providing such a classification for quasisymmetric Schur function families, giving a classification of Schur functions that are in some sense almost F-multiplicity free.

Let $S$ be an orthogonal array $OA(d,k)$ and let $c$ be an $r$--coloring of its ground set $X$. We give a combinatorial identity which relates the number of vectors in $S$ with given color patterns under $c$ with the cardinalities of the color classes. Several applications of the identity are considered. Among them, we show that every equitable $r$--coloring of the integer interval $[1,n]$ has at least $1/2(n/r)^2+O(n)$ monochromatic Schur triples. We also show that in an orthogonal array $OA(d,d-1)$, the number of monochromatic vectors of each color depends only on the number of vectors which miss that color and the cardinality of the color class.
Average mixing of continuous quantum walks

If $X$ is a graph with adjacency matrix $A$, then we define $H(t)$ to be the operator $\exp(itA)$. The Schur (or entrywise) product $H(t)\circ H(-t)$ is a doubly stochastic matrix and, because of work related to quantum computing, we are concerned the \textsl{average mixing matrix}. This can be defined as the limit of $C^{-1} \int_0^C H(t)\circ H(-t)\dt$ as $C\to\infty$. We establish some of the basic properties of this matrix, showing that it is positive semidefinite and that its entries are always rational. We find that for paths and cycles this matrix takes on a surprisingly simple form, thus for the path it is a linear combination of $I$, $J$ (the all-ones matrix), and a permutation matrix.
Kron Reduction of Graphs with Applications to Electrical Networks

Consider a weighted and undirected graph, possibly with self-loops, and its corresponding Laplacian matrix, possibly augmented with additional diagonal elements corresponding to the self-loops. The Kron reduction of this graph is again a graph whose Laplacian matrix is obtained by the Schur complement of the original Laplacian matrix with respect to a subset of nodes. The Kron reduction process is ubiquitous in classic circuit theory and in related disciplines such as electrical impedance tomography, smart grid monitoring, transient stability assessment in power networks, or analysis and simulation of induction motors and power electronics. More general applications of Kron reduction occur in sparse matrix algorithms, multi-grid solvers, finite--element analysis, and Markov chains. The Schur complement of a Laplacian matrix and related concepts have also been studied under different names and as purely theoretic problems in the literature on linear algebra. In this paper we propose a general graph-theoretic framework for Kron reduction that leads to novel and deep insights both on the mathematical and the physical side. We show the applicability of our framework to various practical problem setups arising in engineering applications and computation. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive and detailed graph-theoretic analysis of the Kron reduction process encompassing topological, algebraic, spectral, resistive, and sensitivity analyses. Throughout our theoretic elaborations we especially emphasize the practical applicability of our results.

In [Rank-Width and Well-Quasi-Ordering of Skew-Symmetric or Symmetric Matrices, arXiv:1007.3807v1] Oum proved that, for a fixed finite field $\mathbf{F}$, any infinite sequence $M_1,M_2,...$ of (skew) symmetric matrices over $\mathbf{F}$ of bounded $\mathbf{F}$-rank-width has a pair $i< j$, such that $M_i$ is isomorphic to a principal submatrix of a principal pivot transform of $M_j$. We generalise this result to $σ$-symmetric matrices introduced by Rao and myself in [The Rank-Width of Edge-Coloured Graphs, arXiv:0709.1433v4]. (Skew) symmetric matrices are special cases of $σ$-symmetric matrices. As a by-product, we obtain that for every infinite sequence $G_1,G_2,...$ of directed graphs of bounded rank-width there exist a pair $i<j$ such that $G_i$ is a pivot-minor of $G_j$. Another consequence is that non-singular principal submatrices of a $σ$-symmetric matrix form a delta-matroid. We extend in this way the notion of representability of delta-matroids by Bouchet.

We give a Littlewood-Richardson type rule for expanding the product of a row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a symmetric Schur function in terms of row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. This expansion follows from several new properties of an insertion algorithm defined by Mason and Remmel (2010) which inserts a positive integer into a row-strict composition tableau.

In this paper, we extend recent results of Assaf and McNamara on skew Pieri rule and skew Murnaghan-Nakayama rule to a more general identity, which gives an elegant expansion of the product of a skew Schur function with a quantum power sum function in terms of skew Schur functions. We give two proofs, one completely bijective in the spirit of Assaf-McNamara's original proof, and one via Lam-Lauve-Sotille's skew Littlewood-Richardson rule. We end with some conjectures for skew rules for Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

In this paper, we present, given a odd integer $d$, a decomposition of the multiset of bar lengths of a bar partition $λ$ as the union of two multisets, one consisting of the bar lengths in its $\bar{d}$-core partition $\bar{c}_d(λ)$ and the other consisting of modified bar lengths in its $\bar{d}$-quotient partition. In particular, we obtain that the multiset of bar lengths in $\bar{c}_d(λ)$ is a sub-multiset of the multiset of bar lengths in $λ$. Also we obtain a relative bar formula for the degrees of spin characters of the Schur extensions of the symmetric group. The proof involves a recent similar result for partitions, proved in [1].
Doubly-refined enumeration of Alternating Sign Matrices and determinants of 2-staircase Schur functions
We prove a determinantal identity concerning Schur functions for 2-staircase diagrams lambda=(ln+l',ln,l(n-1)+l',l(n-1),...,l+l',l,l',0). When l=1 and l'=0 these functions are related to the partition function of the 6-vertex model at the combinatorial point and hence to enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices. A consequence of our result is an identity concerning the doubly-refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices.

We study on Weyl modules of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras. In particular, we give the character formula of the Weyl modules by using the Kostka numbers and some numbers which are computed by a generalization of Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also study corresponding symmetric functions. Finally, we give some simple applications to modular representations of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras.
Schurity of S-rings over a cyclic group and generalized wreath product of permutation groups

The generalized wreath product of permutation groups is introduced. By means of it we study the schurity problem for S-rings over a cyclic group $G$ and the automorphism groups of them. Criteria for the schurity and non-schurity of the generalized wreath product of two such S-rings are obtained. As a byproduct of the developed theory we prove that $G$ is a Schur group whenever the total number $Ω(n)$ of prime factors of the integer $n=|G|$ is at most 3. Moreover, we describe the structure of a non-schurian S-ring over $G$ when $Ω(n)=4$. The latter result implies in particular that if $n=p^3q$ where $p$ and $q$ are primes, then $G$ is a Schur group.

We establish a correspondence between Young diagrams and differential operators of infinitely many variables. These operators form a commutative associative algebra isomorphic to the algebra of the conjugated classes of finite permutations of the set of natural numbers. The Schur functions form a complete system of common eigenfunctions of these differential operators, and their eigenvalues are expressed through the characters of symmetric groups. The structure constants of the algebra are expressed through the Hurwitz numbers.
