Folding rotationally symmetrical tableaux via webs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Rectangular standard Young tableaux with 2 or 3 rows are in bijection with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-webs and $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$-webs respectively. When $W$ is a web with a reflection symmetry, the corresponding tableau $T_W$ has a rotational symmetry. Folding $T_W$ transforms it into a domino tableau $D_W$. We study the relationships between these correspondences. For 2-row tableaux, folding a rotationally symmetric tableau corresponds to "literally folding" the web along its axis of symmetry. For $3$-row tableaux, we give simple algorithms, which provide direct bijective maps between symmetrical webs and domino tableaux (in both directions). These details of these algorithms reflect the intuitive idea that $D_W$ corresponds to "$W$ modulo symmetry".

A Multigraph Approach for Performing the Quantum Schur Transform
We take inspiration from the Okounkov-Vershik approach to the representation theory of the symmetric groups to develop a new way of understanding how the Schur-Weyl duality can be used to perform the Quantum Schur Transform. The Quantum Schur Transform is a unitary change of basis transformation between the computational basis of $(\mathbb{C}^d)^{\otimes n}$ and the Schur-Weyl basis of $(\mathbb{C}^d)^{\otimes n}$. We describe a new multigraph, which we call the Schur-Weyl-Young graph, that represents both standard Weyl tableaux and standard Young tableaux in the same diagram. We suggest a major improvement on Louck's formula for calculating the transition amplitudes between two standard Weyl tableaux appearing in adjacent levels of the Schur-Weyl-Young graph for the case $d=2$, merely by looking at the entries in the two tableaux. The key theoretical component that underpins our results is the discovery of a branching rule for the Schur-Weyl states, which we call the Schur-Weyl branching rule. This branching rule allows us to perform the change of basis transformation described above in a straightforward manner for any $n$ and $d$.

Balanced shifted tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce balanced shifted tableaux, as an analogue of balanced tableaux of Edelman and Greene, from the perspective of root systems of type B and C. We show that they are equinumerous to standard Young tableaux of the corresponding shifted shape by presenting an explicit bijection.

Lattice path enumeration for semi-magic squares by Latin rectangles
Similar to how standard Young tableaux represent paths in the Young lattice, Latin rectangles may be use to enumerate paths in the poset of semi-magic squares with entries zero or one. The symmetries associated to determinant preserve this poset, and we completely describe the orbits, covering data, and maximal chains for squares of size 4, 5, and 6. The last item gives the number of Latin squares in these cases. To calculate efficiently for size 6, we in turn identify orbits with certain equivalence classes of hypergraphs.

{T}he Gröbner Basis of a Catalan Path Ideal
Published • View PublicationBIB
For the ideal $I = \langle y_1 + \dots + y_n, y^2_1, \dots , y^2_n \rangle$ in $R = {\mathbb F}[y_1, \dots , y_n]$ with char($\mathbb F$) = 0, we show that the reduced Gröbner basis with lex-order consists of polynomials $g_α$ that are represented in terms of paths, moving northeast in the Cartesian plane, that stay above the diagonal and cross the diagonal at the last step. This implies that a linear basis for the quotient ring $R/I$ is given by a set of Catalan paths. We show that the dimension is the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and height at most two. The graded Frobenius characteristic of $R/I$ as a symmetric group module is given by $\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor } s_{n-k,k}q^k$.

Standard Young tableaux and lattice paths
Using lattice path counting arguments, we reproduce a well known formula for the number of standard Young tableaux. We also produce an interesting new formula for tableaux of height $\leq 3$ using the Fourier methods of Ault and Kicey.
The Young matroid: A multiset extension of the Catalan matroid to arbitrary Young diagrams
Introduced by Ardila (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003), the Catalan matroid is obtained by defining the bases of the matroid using Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$. Further research has gone into the topic, with variants like lattice path matroids (introduced by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003)) and shifted matroids (introduced independently by Klivans (2003), and Ardila) being studied intensively. In this short note, we introduce the Young matroid, an extension of the Catalan matroid, where the bases are defined using the standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape. This extension necessarily involves the consideration of independent multisets and multiset bases.

On Schützenberger modules of the cactus group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cactus group acts on the set of standard Young tableau of a given shape by (partial) Schützenberger involutions. It is natural to extend this action to the corresponding Specht module by identifying standard Young tableau with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. We term these representations of the cactus group "Schützenberger modules", denoted $S^λ_{\mathsf{Sch}}$, and in this paper we investigate their decomposition into irreducible components. We prove that when $λ$ is a hook shape, the cactus group action on $S^λ_{\mathsf{Sch}}$ factors through $S_{n-1}$ and the resulting multiplicities are given by Kostka coefficients. Our proof relies on results of Berenstein and Kirillov and Chmutov, Glick, and Pylyavskyy.
Permutations whose reverse shares the same recording tableau in the RSK correspondence
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B86a (2022), 15 pp • Search Publication
The RSK correspondence is a bijection between permutations and pairs of standard Young tableaux with identical shape, where the tableaux are commonly denoted $P$ (insertion) and $Q$ (recording). It has been an open problem to demonstrate $$ |\{w \in \mathfrak{S}_n | \, Q(w) = Q(w^r)\}| = \begin{cases} \displaystyle 2^{\frac{n-1}{2}}{n-1 \choose \frac{n-1}{2}} & n \text{ odd} \newline \displaystyle 0 & n \text{ even} \end{cases}, $$ where $w^r$ is the reverse permutation of $w$. First we show that for each $w$ where $Q(w) = Q(w^r)$ the recording tableau $Q(w)$ has a symmetric hook shape and satisfies a certain simple property. From these two results, we succeed in proving the desired identity.

A Refinement of the Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule by Descents for Border Strip Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition. We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we introduce a new statistic for border strip tableaux, extending the classical definition of descents in standard Young tableaux. Curiously, it turns out that our new statistic is very closely related to a descent set for tuples of standard Young tableaux appearing in the quasisymmetric expansion of LLT polynomials given by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr.

$q{\rm RS}t$: A probabilistic Robinson--Schensted correspondence for Macdonald polynomials (extended abstract)
We present a probabilistic generalization of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence in which a permutation maps to several different pairs of standard Young tableaux with nonzero probability. The probabilities depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$, and the correspondence gives a new proof of the squarefree part of the Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$ in various ways, one recovers both the row and column insertion versions of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence, as well as several $q$- and $t$-deformations of row and column insertion which have been introduced in recent years in connection with integrable probability.

Cyclic descents for Motzkin paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
A notion of cyclic descents on standard Young tableaux (SYT) of rectangular shape was introduced by Rhoades, and extended to certain skew shapes by Adin, Elizalde and Roichman. The cyclic descent set restricts to the usual descent set when the largest value is ignored, and has the property that the number of SYT of a given shape with a given cyclic descent set D is invariant under cyclic shifts of the entries of D. Adin, Reiner and Roichman proved that a skew shape has a cyclic descent map if and only if it is not a connected ribbon. Unfortunately, their proof is nonconstructive. Recently Huang constructed an explicit cyclic descent map for all shapes where this is possible. In the earlier version of Adin, Elizalde and Roichman's paper, they asked to find statistics on combinatorial objects which are equidistributed with cyclic descents on SYT of given shapes. In this paper, we explicitly describe cyclic descent sets for Motzkin paths, which are equidistributed with cyclic descent sets of SYT for three-row shapes. Moreover, in light of Stanley's shuffling theorem, we give a bijective proof of the shuffling property of descent statistics for Motzkin paths.
Bijecting hidden symmetries for skew staircase shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a bijection between the set of standard Young tableaux of staircase minus rectangle shape, and the set of marked shifted standard Young tableaux of a certain shifted shape. Numerically, this result is due to DeWitt (2012). Combined with other known bijections this gives a bijective proof of the product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of staircase minus rectangle shape. This resolves an open problem by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019), and allows for efficient random sampling. Other applications include a bijection for semistandard Young tableaux, and a bijective proof of Stembridge's symmetry of LR-coefficients of the staircase shape. We also extend these results to set-valued standard Young tableaux in the combinatorics of K-theory, leading to new proofs of results by Lewis and Marberg (2019) and Abney-McPeek, An and Ng (2020).
A New Partial Order on SYT
We define a new partial order on $SYT_n$, the set of all standard Young tableaux with $n$ cells, by combining the chain order with the notion of horizontal strips. We prove various desirable properties of this new order.

This paper completely characterizes the standard Young tableaux that can be reconstructed from their sets or multisets of $1$-minors. In particular, any standard Young tableau with at least $5$ entries can be reconstructed from its set of $1$-minors.

A Bijection Between Weighted Dyck Paths and 1234-avoiding Up-Down Permutations
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.

A Robinson-Schensted Correspondence for Partial Permutations
We study the Steinberg variety associated to matrix Schubert varieties, and develop a Robinson-Schensted type correspondence, $τ\leftrightarrow(Λ,\mathsf Q,\mathsf P)$. Here $τ$ is a partial permutation of size $p\times q$, $Λ$ an admissible signed Young diagram of size $p+q$, and $\mathsf P$ (resp. $\mathsf Q$) a standard Young tableau of size $p$ (resp. $q$) whose shape is determined by $Λ$. By embedding the matrix Schubert variety into a Schubert variety, we find a close relationship between the combinatorics of the classical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and our bijection. We also show that an involution $(Λ,\mathsf Q,\mathsf P)\mapsto(Λ^\vee,\mathsf P,\mathsf Q)$ corresponds to projective duality on matrix Schubert varieties.
Freely Independent Coin Tosses, Standard Young Tableaux, and the Kesten--McKay Law
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we shall start with a closed walk on a regular tree of degree $d$. These walks are described by the Kesten-McKay law which arises as the asymptotic distribution of a random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. We will show that the moments of the Kesten-McKay law are given by counting standard Young tableaux with at most 2 rows, and how some properties of the walk make sense even when $d$ is not an integer. We will use free probability to instruct us how to build an explicit model in random matrix theory.

Enumeration of Gelfand-Cetlin type reduced words
Published • View PublicationBIB
The combinatorics of reduced words and commutation classes plays an important role in geometric representation theory. A string polytope is a lattice polytope associated to each reduced word of the longest element $w_0$ in the symmetric group which encodes the character of a certain irreducible representation of a Lie group of type $A$. In this paper, we provide a recursive formula for the number of reduced words of $w_0$ such that the corresponding string polytopes are combinatorially equivalent to a Gelfand-Cetlin polytope. The recursive formula involves the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted shape. We also show that each commutation class is completely determined by a list of quantities called indices.

$q{\rm RS}t$: A probabilistic Robinson--Schensted correspondence for Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a probabilistic generalization of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence in which a permutation maps to several different pairs of standard Young tableaux with nonzero probability. The probabilities depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$, and the correspondence gives a new proof of the squarefree part of the Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials (i.e., the equality of the coefficients of $x_1 \cdots x_n y_1 \cdots y_n$ on either side, which are related to permutations and standard Young tableaux). By specializing $q$ and $t$ in various ways, one recovers the row and column insertion versions of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence, several $q$- and $t$-deformations of row and column insertion which have been introduced in recent years in connection with $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood processes, and the Plancherel measure on partitions. Our construction is based on Fomin's growth diagrams and the recently introduced notion of a probabilistic bijection between weighted sets.
