On the Okounkov-Olshanski formula for standard tableaux of skew shapes
Published in Comb. Theory 2(1) (2022), #1 • View PublicationBIB
The classical hook length formula counts the number of standard tableaux of straight shapes. In 1996, Okounkov and Olshanski found a positive formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. We prove various properties of this formula, including three determinantal formulas for the number of nonzero terms, an equivalence between the Okounkov-Olshanski formula and another skew tableaux formula involving Knutson-Tao puzzles, and two $q$-analogues for reverse plane partitions, which complements work by Stanley and Chen for semistandard tableaux. We also give several reformulations of the formula, including two in terms of the excited diagrams appearing in a more recent skew tableaux formula by Naruse. Lastly, for thick zigzag shapes we show that the number of nonzero terms is given by a determinant of the Genocchi numbers and improve on known upper bounds by Morales-Pak-Panova on the number of standard tableaux of these shapes.

Derivatives, Eulerian polynomials and the $g$-indexes of Young tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we first present summation formulas for $k$-order Eulerian polynomials and $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials. We then present combinatorial expansions of $(c(x)D)^n$ in terms of inversion sequences as well as $k$-Young tableaux, where $c(x)$ is a differentiable function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. We define the $g$-indexes of $k$-Young tableaux and Young tableaux, which have important applications in combinatorics. By establishing some relations between $k$-Young tableaux and standard Young tableaux, we express Eulerian polynomials, second-order Eulerian polynomials, André polynomials and the generating polynomials of gamma coefficients of Eulerian polynomials in terms of standard Young tableaux, which imply a deep connection among these polynomials.

Counting Standard Young Tableaux With Restricted Runs
The number of Young Tableaux whose shape is a k by n rectangle is famously (nk)! 0! ... (k-1)!/((n+k-1)!(n+k-2)!... n!) implying that for each specific k, that sequence satisfies a linear recurrence equation with polynomial coefficients of the first order. But what about counting Young tableaux where certain "run lengths" are forbidden? Then things seem to get much more complicated. We conclude with four conjectures and pledge donations to the OEIS in honor of the first provers.

Combinatorics of injective words for Temperley-Lieb algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies combinatorial properties of the 'complex of planar injective words', a chain complex of modules over the Temperley-Lieb algebra that arose in our work on homological stability. Despite being a linear rather than a discrete object, our chain complex nevertheless exhibits interesting combinatorial properties. We show that the Euler characteristic of this complex is the n-th Fine number. We obtain an alternating sum formula for the representation given by its top-dimensional homology module and, under further restrictions on the ground ring, we decompose this module in terms of certain standard Young tableaux. This trio of results - inspired by results of Reiner and Webb for the complex of injective words - can be viewed as an interpretation of the n-th Fine number as the 'planar' or 'Dyck path' analogue of the number of derangements of n letters. This interpretation has precursors in the literature, but here emerges naturally from considerations in homological stability. Our final result shows a surprising connection between the boundary maps of our complex and the Jacobsthal numbers.
On the distribution of the major index on standard Young tableaux
The study of permutation and partition statistics is a classical topic in enumerative combinatorics. The major index statistic on permutations was introduced a century ago by Percy MacMahon in his seminal works. In this extended abstract, we study the well-known generalization of the major index to standard Young tableaux. We present several new results. In one direction, we introduce and study two partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us to classify the realizable major index statistics on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes, and has representation-theoretic consequences, both for the symmetric group and for Shephard-Todd groups. In a different direction, we consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, "aft," generalizing earlier results of Canfield-Janson-Zeilberger, Chen-Wang-Wang, and others. We also study unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit properties.

Duality of graded graphs through operads
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Pairs of graded graphs, together with the Fomin property of graded graph duality, are rich combinatorial structures providing among other a framework for enumeration. The prototypical example is the one of the Young graded graph of integer partitions, allowing us to connect number of standard Young tableaux and numbers of permutations. Here, we use operads, that algebraic devices abstracting the notion of composition of combinatorial objects, to build pairs of graded graphs. For this, we first construct a pair of graded graphs where vertices are syntax trees, the elements of free nonsymmetric operads. This pair of graphs is dual for a new notion of duality called $φ$-diagonal duality, similar to the ones introduced by Fomin. We also provide a general way to build pairs of graded graphs from operads, wherein underlying posets are analogous to the Young lattice. Some examples of operads leading to new pairs of graded graphs involving integer compositions, Motzkin paths, and $m$-trees are considered.
Skew characters and cyclic sieving
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma , Volume 9 , 2021 , e41 • View PublicationBIB
In 2010, B. Rhoades proved that promotion together with the fake-degree polynomial associated with rectangular standard Young tableaux give an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon. We extend this result to all skew standard Young tableaux where the fake-degree polynomial evaluates to nonnegative integers at roots of unity, albeit without being able to specify an explicit group action. Put differently, we determine in which cases a skew character of the symmetric group carries a permutation representation of the cyclic group. We use a method proposed by N. Amini and the first author, which amounts to establishing a bound on the number of border-strip tableaux of skew shape. Finally, we apply our results to the invariant theory of tensor powers of the adjoint representation of the general linear group. In particular, we prove the existence of a bijection between permutations and J. Stembridge's alternating tableaux, which intertwines rotation and promotion.

Singular nonsymmetric Jack polynomials for some rectangular tableaux
Published in Symmetry 2020 12(4), 630 • View PublicationBIB
In the intersection of the theories of nonsymmetric Jack polynomials in $N$ variables and representations of the symmetric groups $\mathcal{S}_{N}$ one finds the singular polynomials. For certain values of the parameter $κ$ there are Jack polynomials which span an irreducible $\mathcal{S}_{N}$-module and are annihilated by the Dunkl operators. The $\mathcal{S}_{N}$-module is labeled by a partition of $N$, called the isotype of the polynomials. In this paper the Jack polynomials are of the vector-valued type, that is, elements of the tensor product of the scalar polynomials with the span of reverse standard Young tableaux of the shape of a fixed partition of $N$. In particular this partition is of shape $\left( m,m,\ldots,m\right) $ with $2k$ components and the constructed singular polynomials are of isotype $\left( mk,mk\right) $ for the parameter $κ=$ $1/\left( m+2\right) $. The paper contains the necessary background on nonsymmetric Jack polynomials and representation theory and explains the role of Jucys-Murphy elements in the construction. The main ingredient is the proof of uniqueness of certain spectral vectors, namely, the list of eigenvalues of the Jack polynomials for the Cherednik-Dunkl operators, when specialized to $κ=1/\left( m+2\right) $. The paper finishes with a discussion of associated maps of modules of the rational Cherednik algebra and an example illustrating the difficulty of finding singular polynomials for arbitrary partitions.

Toward a Schurification of Parking Function Formulas via bijections with Young Tableaux
This paper contains a partial answer to the open problem 3.11 of \cite{[H2008]}. That is to find an explicit bijection on Schröder paths that inverts the statistics area and bounce. This paper started as an attempt to write the sum over $m$-Schröder paths with a fix number of diagonal steps into Schur functions in the variables $q$ and $t$. Some results have been generalized to parking functions, and some bijections were made with standard Young tableaux giving way to partial combinatorial formulas in the basis $s_μ(q,t)s_λ(X)$ for $\nabla(e_n)$ (respectively, $\nabla^m(e_n)$), when $μ$ and $λ$ are hooks (respectively, $μ$ is of length one). We also give an explicit algorithm that gives all the Schröder paths related to a Schur function $s_μ(q,t)$ when $μ$ is of length one. In a sense, it is a partial decomposition of Schröder paths into crystals.

Enumeration of row-increasing tableaux of two-row skew shapes
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 344(3) (2021) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we firstly extend a result of Bonin, Shapiro and Simion by giving the distribution of the major index over generalized Schröder paths. Then by providing a bijection between generalized Schröder paths and row-increasing tableaux of skew shapes with two rows, we obtain the distribution of the major index and the amajor index over these tableaux, which extends a result of Du, Fan and Zhao. We also generalize a result of Pechenik and give the distribution of the major index over increasing tableaux of skew shapes with two rows. Especially, a bijection from row-increasing tableaux with shape $(n,m)$ and maximal value $n+m-k$ to standard Young tableaux with shape $((n-k+1,m-k+1,1^k)/(1^2))$ is obtained.

de Finetti Lattices and Magog Triangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
The order ideal $B_{n,2}$ of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ consists of all subsets of size at most $2$. Let $F_{n,2}$ denote the poset refinement of $B_{n,2}$ induced by the rules: $i < j$ implies $\{i \} \prec \{ j \}$ and $\{i,k \} \prec \{j,k\}$. We give an elementary bijection from the set $\mathcal{F}_{n,2}$ of linear extensions of $F_{n,2}$ to the set of shifted standard Young tableau of shape $(n, n-1, \ldots, 1)$, which are counted by the strict-sense ballot numbers. We find a more surprising result when considering the set $\mathcal{F}_{n,2}^{1}$ of minimal poset refinements in which each singleton is comparable with all of the doubletons. We show that $\mathcal{F}_{n,2}^{1}$ is in bijection with magog triangles, and therefore is equinumerous with alternating sign matrices. We adopt our proof techniques to show that row reversal of an alternating sign matrix corresponds to a natural involution on gog triangles.

English title: Eigenvalues of Symmetrized Shuffling Operators The random-to-random shuffling operator explains, for example, the evolution of a deck of cards subject to the following random process: draw a card randomly from the deck and reinsert it at a random position. If one instead draws more than one card at a time before reinserting, then the resulting operator is an example of a family of symmetrized shuffling operators studied by Victor Reiner, Franco Saliola and Volkmar Welker. This thesis describes a way to obtain the eigenvalues of these operators. We build on the work of Anton Dieker and Franco Saliola, who computed the eigenvalues of the random-to-random shuffle. Here, we compute the eigenvalues for all the operators of the family. We proceed with the help of the representation theory of the symmetric group. We decompose the vector space on which the shuffles act into simple modules for the symmetric group. These modules correspond to standard Young tableaux, and the algorithm to compute the eigenvalues is combinatorial because it computes the eigenvalues directly from the standard Young tableaux. As a corollary of our main result, we solve several conjectures of Reiner, Saliola and Welker, including showing that the eigenvalues are all nonnegative integers. Furthermore, the techniques used here allow us to give a new proof of their result that these symmetrized shuffling operators commute. Knowing the eigenvalues is the key step in one method of computing the number of shuffles one needs to execute to get a perfectly shuffled deck, which is briefly explored. We also study a second family of shuffles introduced by Reiner, Saliola and Welker. We present many conjectures about their eigenvalues.

Combinatorial model for m-cluster categories in type E
We revisit the geometric description of cluster categories in type E in terms of colored diagonals in a polygon and generalize it to the case of m-cluster categories. As an application, we relate colored diagonals in a polygon to semi-standard Young tableaux, in type E_6,E_7,E_8. This provides a new compatibility description of semi--standard Young tableaux in Grassmannian cluster algebras in type E_6, E_8 and in a sub-cluster algebra of type E_7.

Roots of descent polynomials and an algebraic inequality on hook lengths

We prove a conjecture by Diaz-Lopez et al. that bounds the roots of descent polynomials. To do so, we prove an algebraic inequality, which we refer to as the "Slice and Push Inequality." This inequality compares expressions that come from Naruse's hook-length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape.

Maximizing the Edelman-Greene statistic
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $\textit{Edelman-Greene statistic}$ of S. Billey-B. Pawlowski measures the "shortness" of the Schur expansion of a Stanley symmetric function. We show that the maximum value of this statistic on permutations of Coxeter length $n$ is the number of involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$, and explicitly describe the permutations that attain this maximum. Our proof confirms a recent conjecture of C. Monical, B. Pankow, and A. Yong: we give an explicit combinatorial injection between a certain collections of Edelman-Greene tableaux and standard Young tableaux.

On cyclic Schur-positive sets of permutation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a notion of {\em cyclic Schur-positivity} for sets of permutations, which naturally extends the classical notion of Schur-positivity, and it involves the existence of a bijection from permutations to standard Young tableaux that preserves the cyclic descent set. Cyclic Schur-positive sets of permutations are always Schur-positive, but the converse does not hold, as exemplified by inverse descent classes, Knuth classes and conjugacy classes. In this paper we show that certain classes of permutations invariant under either horizontal or vertical rotation are cyclic Schur-positive. The proof unveils a new equidistribution phenomenon of descent sets on permutations, provides affirmative solutions to conjectures from [9] and [2], and yields new examples of Schur-positive sets.

Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.
An insertion algorithm on multiset partitions with applications to diagram algebras
Published in J. Algebra 557 no. 1, (2020), 97-128 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to the insertion of two row arrays of multisets. This generalization leads to new enumerative results that have representation theoretic interpretations as decompositions of centralizer algebras and the spaces they act on. In addition, restrictions on the multisets lead to further identities and representation theory analogues. For instance, we obtain a bijection between words of length $k$ with entries in $[n]$ and pairs of tableaux of the same shape with one being a standard Young tableau of size $n$ and the other being a standard multiset tableau of content $[k]$. We also obtain an algorithm from partition diagrams to pairs of a standard tableau and a standard multiset tableau of the same shape, which has the remarkable property that it is well-behaved with respect to restricting a representation to a subalgebra. This insertion algorithm matches recent representation-theoretic results of Halverson and Jacobson.

A Sundaram type bijection for $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$: vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau
We present a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau for the special orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. This bijection is motivated by the direct-sum-decomposition of the $r$th tensor power of the defining representation of $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. To formulate it, we use Kwon's orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and introduce new alternative tableaux they are in bijection with. Moreover we use a suitably defined descent set for vacillating tableaux to determine the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components.

Reduced word enumeration, complexity, and randomization
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 29 (2) (2022), #P2.46 • View PublicationBIB
A reduced word of a permutation $w$ is a minimal length expression of $w$ as a product of simple transpositions. We examine the computational complexity, formulas and (randomized) algorithms for their enumeration. In particular, we prove that the Edelman-Greene statistic, defined by S. Billey-B. Pawlowski, is typically exponentially large. This implies a result of B. Pawlowski, that it has exponentially growing expectation. Our result is established by a formal run-time analysis of A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger's transition algorithm. The more general problem of Hecke word enumeration, and its closely related question of counting set-valued standard Young tableaux, is also investigated. The latter enumeration problem is further motivated by work on Brill-Noether varieties due to M. Chan-N. Pflueger and D. Anderson-L. Chen-N. Tarasca.
