Stanley symmetric functions for signed involutions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 168 (2019), 288-317 • View PublicationBIB
An involution in a Coxeter group has an associated set of involution words, a variation on reduced words. These words are saturated chains in a partial order first considered by Richardson and Springer in their study of symmetric varieties. In the symmetric group, involution words can be enumerated in terms of tableaux using appropriate analogues of the symmetric functions introduced by Stanley to accomplish the same task for reduced words. We adapt this approach to the group of signed permutations. We show that involution words for the longest element in the Coxeter group $C_n$ are in bijection with reduced words for the longest element in $A_n = S_{n+1}$, which are known to be in bijection with standard tableaux of shape $(n, n-1, \ldots, 2, 1)$.

Fixed-point-free involutions and Schur P-positivity
Published in J. Combin. 11 (2020), no. 1, 65-110 • View PublicationBIB
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

Positivity of Cylindric skew Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cylindric skew Schur functions, a generalization of skew Schur functions, are closely related to the famous problem finding a combinatorial formula for the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannian. In this paper, we prove cylindric Schur positivity of the cylindric skew Schur functions, conjectured by McNamara. We also show that all coefficients appearing in the expansion are the same as $3$-point Gromov-Witten invariants. We start discussing properties of affine Stanley symmetric functions for general affine permutations and $321$-avoiding affine permutations, and explain how these functions are related to cylindric skew Schur functions. We also provide an effective algorithm to compute the expansion of the cylindric skew Schur functions in terms of the cylindric Schur functions, and the expansion of affine Stanley symmetric functions in terms of affine Schur functions.

A Demazure crystal construction for Schubert polynomials
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 1(2) (2018) 225-247 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley symmetric functions are the stable limits of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we show that, conversely, Schubert polynomials are Demazure truncations of Stanley symmetric functions. This parallels the relationship between Schur functions and Demazure characters for the general linear group. We establish this connection by imposing a Demazure crystal structure on key tableaux, recently introduced by the first author in connection with Demazure characters and Schubert polynomials, and linking this to the type A crystal structure on reduced word factorizations, recently introduced by Morse and the second author in connection with Stanley symmetric functions.

Crystal analysis of type $C$ Stanley symmetric functions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24(3) (2017) #P3.51 • View PublicationBIB
Combining results of T.K. Lam and J. Stembridge, the type $C$ Stanley symmetric function $F_w^C(\mathbf{x})$, indexed by an element $w$ in the type $C$ Coxeter group, has a nonnegative integer expansion in terms of Schur functions. We provide a crystal theoretic explanation of this fact and give an explicit combinatorial description of the coefficients in the Schur expansion in terms of highest weight crystal elements.

Weak dual equivalence for polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use dual equivalence to give a short, combinatorial proof that Stanley symmetric functions are Schur positive. We introduce weak dual equivalence, and use it to give a short, combinatorial proof that Schubert polynomials are key positive. To demonstrate further the utility of this new tool, we use weak dual equivalence to prove a nonnegative Littlewood--Richardson rule for the key expansion of the product of a key polynomial and a Schur polynomial, and to introduce skew key polynomials that, when skewed by a partition, expand nonnegatively in the key basis.

Schur P-positivity and involution Stanley symmetric functions
Published in IMRN (2017), rnx274 • View PublicationBIB
The involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}_y$ are the stable limits of the analogues of Schubert polynomials for the orbits of the orthogonal group in the flag variety. These symmetric functions are also generating functions for involution words, and are indexed by the involutions in the symmetric group. By construction each $\hat{F}_y$ is a sum of Stanley symmetric functions and therefore Schur positive. We prove the stronger fact that these power series are Schur $P$-positive. We give an algorithm to efficiently compute the decomposition of $\hat{F}_y$ into Schur $P$-summands, and prove that this decomposition is triangular with respect to the dominance order on partitions. As an application, we derive pattern avoidance conditions which characterize the involution Stanley symmetric functions which are equal to Schur $P$-functions. We deduce as a corollary that the involution Stanley symmetric function of the reverse permutation is a Schur $P$-function indexed by a shifted staircase shape. These results lead to alternate proofs of theorems of Ardila-Serrano and DeWitt on skew Schur functions which are Schur $P$-functions. We also prove new Pfaffian formulas for certain related involution Schubert polynomials.

Schubert polynomials, slide polynomials, Stanley symmetric functions and quasi-Yamanouchi pipe dreams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.

A new family of posets generalizing the weak order on some Coxeter groups
We construct a poset from a simple acyclic digraph together with a valuation on its vertices, and we compute the values of its Möbius function. We show that the weak order on Coxeter groups of type A, B, affine A, and the flag weak order on the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \_r \wr S\_n$ introduced by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, are special instances of our construction. We conclude by associating a quasi-symmetric function to each element of these posets. In the $A$ and $\widetilde{A}$ cases, this function coincides respectively with the classical Stanley symmetric function, and with Lam's affine generalization.

Involution words: counting problems and connections to Schubert calculus for symmetric orbit closures
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 160 (2018), 217-260 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

Combinatorial description of the cohomology of the affine flag variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

Cohomology classes of interval positroid varieties and a conjecture of Liu
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ (a diagram), one can associate a subvariety of a complex Grassmannian (a diagram variety), and a representation of a symmetric group (a Specht module). Liu has conjectured that the cohomology class of a diagram variety is represented by the Frobenius characteristic of the corresponding Specht module. We give a counterexample to this conjecture. However, we show that for the diagram variety of a permutation diagram, Liu's conjectured cohomology class $σ$ is at least an upper bound on the actual class $τ$, in the sense that $σ- τ$ is a nonnegative linear combination of Schubert classes. To do this, we exhibit the appropriate diagram variety as a component in a degeneration of one of Knutson's interval positroid varieties (up to Grassmann duality). A priori, the cohomology classes of these interval positroid varieties are represented by affine Stanley symmetric functions. We give a different formula for these classes as ordinary Stanley symmetric functions, one with the advantage of being Schur-positive and compatible with inclusions between Grassmannians.

Richard Stanley through a crystal lens and from a random angle
Published in in: The Mathematical Legacy of Richard P. Stanley, AMS 2016, edited by P. Hersh, T. Lam, P. Pylyavskyy, V. Reiner, pp. 287-299 • View PublicationBIB
We review Stanley's seminal work on the number of reduced words of the longest element of the symmetric group and his Stanley symmetric functions. We shed new light on this by giving a crystal theoretic interpretation in terms of decreasing factorizations of permutations. Whereas crystal operators on tableaux are coplactic operators, the crystal operators on decreasing factorization intertwine with the Edelman-Greene insertion. We also view this from a random perspective and study a Markov chain on reduced words of the longest element in a finite Coxeter group, in particular the symmetric group, and mention a generalization to a poset setting.

Diagrams of affine permutations, balanced labellings, and symmetric functions
We generalize the work of Fomin, Greene, Reiner, and Shimozono on balanced labellings in two directions: (1) we define the diagrams of affine permutations and the balanced labellings on them; (2) we define the set-valued version of the balanced labellings. We show that the column-strict balanced labellings on the diagram of an affine permutation yield the affine Stanley symmetric function defined by Lam, and that the column-strict set-valued balanced labellings yield the affine stable Grothendieck polynomial of Lam. Moreover, once we impose suitable flag conditions, the flagged column-strict set-valued balanced labellings on the diagram of a finite permutation give a monomial expansion of the Grothendieck polynomial of Lascoux and Schützenberger. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a diagram to be an affine permutation diagram.

Permutation patterns, Stanley symmetric functions and generalized Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing the notion of a vexillary permutation, we introduce a filtration of S_infinity by the number of Schur function terms in the Stanley symmetric function, with the kth filtration level called the k-vexillary permutations. We show that for each k, the k-vexillary permutations are characterized by avoiding a finite set of patterns. A key step is the construction of a Specht series, in the sense of James and Peel, for the Specht module associated to the diagram of a permutation. As a corollary, we prove a conjecture of Liu on diagram varieties for certain classes of permutation diagrams. We apply similar techniques to characterize multiplicity-free Stanley symmetric functions, as well as permutations whose diagram is equivalent to a forest in the sense of Liu.

Tower tableaux and Schubert polynomials
We prove that the well-known condition of being a balanced labeling can be characterized in terms of the sliding algorithm on tower diagrams. The characterization involves a generalization of authors' Rothification algorithm. Using the characterization, we obtain descriptions of Schubert polynomials and Stanley symmetric functions.

A canonical expansion of the product of two Stanley symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of expanding the product of two Stanley symmetric functions $F_w\cdot F_u$ into Stanley symmetric functions in some natural way. Our approach is to consider a Stanley symmetric function as a stabilized Schubert polynomial $F_{w}=\lim_{n\to \infty}\mathfrak{S}_{1^{n}\times w}$, and study the behavior of the expansion of $\s_{1^n\times w}\cdot\s_{1^n\times u}$ into Schubert polynomials, as $n$ increases. We prove that this expansion stabilizes and thus we get a natural expansion for the product of two Stanley symmetric functions. In the case when one permutation is Grassmannian, we have a better understanding of this stability. We then study some other related stable properties, which provides a second proof of the main result.

Affine Stanley symmetric functions for classical types
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce affine Stanley symmetric functions for the special orthogonal groups, a class of symmetric functions that model the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, continuing the work of Lam and Lam, Schilling, and Shimozono on the special linear and symplectic groups, respectively. For the odd orthogonal groups, a Hopf-algebra isomorphism is given, identifying (co)homology Schubert classes with symmetric functions. For the even orthogonal groups, we conjecture an approximate model of (co)homology via symmetric functions. In the process, we develop type B and type D non-commutative k-Schur functions as elements of the nilCoxeter algebra that model homology of the affine Grassmannian. Additionally, Pieri rules for multiplication by special Schubert classes in homology are given in both cases. Finally, we present a type-free interpretation of Pieri factors, used in the definition of noncommutative k-Schur functions or affine Stanley symmetric functions for any classical type.
