P-partition power sums
We develop the theory of weighted P-partitions, which generalises the theory of P-partitions from labelled posets to weighted labelled posets. We define the related generating functions in the natural way and compute their product, coproduct and other properties. As an application we introduce the basis of combinatorial power sums for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and the reverse basis, both of which refine the power sum symmetric functions. These bases share many properties with the type 1 and type 2 quasisymmetric power sums introduced by Ballantine, Daugherty, Hicks, Mason and Niese, and moreover expand into the monomial basis of quasisymmetric functions with nonnegative integer coefficients. We prove formulas for products, coproducts and classical quasisymmetric involutions via the combinatorics of P-partitions, and give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients when expanded into the monomial and fundamental bases.

The $e$-positivity and Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric functions of some trees
We investigate the $e$-positivity and Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric functions of some spider graphs with three legs. We obtain the positivity classification of all broom graphs and that of most double broom graphs. The methods involve extracting particular $e$-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function of these graphs with the aid of Orellana and Scott's triple-deletion property, and using the combinatorial formula of Schur coefficients by examining certain special rim hook tabloids. We also propose some conjectures on the $e$-positivity and Schur positivity of trees.
LLT polynomials in the Schiffmann algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We identify certain combinatorially defined rational functions which, under the shuffle to Schiffmann algebra isomorphism, map to LLT polynomials in any of the distinguished copies $Λ(X^{m,n})\subset \mathcal{E}$ of the algebra of symmetric functions embedded in the elliptic Hall algebra $\mathcal{E}$ of Burban and Schiffmann. As a corollary, we deduce an explicit raising operator formula for the $\nabla$ operator applied to any LLT polynomial. In particular, we obtain a formula for $\nabla ^m s_λ$ which serves as a starting point for our proof of the Loehr-Warrington conjecture in a companion paper to this one.

How to Draw a Correlation Function
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 106, 35 pages • View PublicationBIB
We discuss connection between the XX0 Heisenberg spin chain and some aspects of enumerative combinatorics. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the theory of symmetric functions to the calculation of the correlation functions. We provide a combinatorial derivation of the dynamical auto-correlation functions and visualise them in terms of nests of self-avoiding lattice paths. Asymptotics of the auto-correlation functions are obtained in the double scaling limit provided that the evolution parameter is large.

Hall-Littlewood polynomials, boundaries, and $p$-adic random matrices
We prove that the boundary of the Hall-Littlewood $t$-deformation of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is parametrized by infinite integer signatures, extending results of Gorin and Cuenca on boundaries of related deformed Gelfand-Tsetlin graphs. In the special case when $1/t$ is a prime $p$ we use this to recover results of Bufetov-Qiu and Assiotis on infinite $p$-adic random matrices, placing them in the general context of branching graphs derived from symmetric functions. Our methods rely on explicit formulas for certain skew Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As a separate corollary to these, we obtain a simple expression for the joint distribution of the cokernels of products $A_1, A_2A_1, A_3A_2A_1,\ldots$ of independent Haar-distributed matrices $A_i$ over the $p$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_p$. This expression generalizes the explicit formula for the classical Cohen-Lenstra measure on abelian $p$-groups.

The complex genera, symmetric functions and multiple zeta values
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 206 (2024) 105893 • View PublicationBIB
We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the $\text{Td}^{\frac{1}{2}}$-genus, the $Γ$-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.
Crystal invariant theory I: Geometric RSK
Published • View PublicationBIB
Berenstein and Kazhdan's theory of geometric crystals gives rise to two commuting families of geometric crystal operators acting on the space of complex $m \times n$ matrices. These are birational actions, which we view as a crystal-theoretic analogue of the usual action of ${\rm SL}_m \times {\rm SL}_n$ on $m \times n$ matrices. We prove that the field of rational invariants (and ring of polynomial invariants) of each family of geometric crystal operators is generated by a set of algebraically independent polynomials, which are generalizations of the elementary symmetric polynomials in $m$ (or $n$) variables. We also give a set of algebraically independent generators for the intersection of these fields, and we explain how these fields are situated inside the larger fields of geometric $R$-matrix invariants, which were studied by Lam and the third-named author under the name loop symmetric functions. The key tool in our proof is the geometric RSK correspondence of Noumi and Yamada, which we show to be an isomorphism of geometric crystals. In an appendix jointly written with Thomas Lam, we prove the fundamental theorem of loop symmetric functions, which says that the polynomial invariants of the geometric $R$-matrix are generated by the loop elementary symmetric functions.

On Vanishing Properties of Polynomials on Symmetric Sets of the Boolean Cube, in Positive Characteristic
The finite-degree Zariski (Z-) closure is a classical algebraic object, that has found a key place in several applications of the polynomial method in combinatorics. In this work, we characterize the finite-degree Z-closures of a subclass of symmetric sets (subsets that are invariant under permutations of coordinates) of the Boolean cube, in positive characteristic. Our results subsume multiple statements on finite-degree Z-closures that have found applications in extremal combinatorial problems, for instance, pertaining to set systems (Hegedűs, Stud. Sci. Math. Hung. 2010; Hegedűs, arXiv 2021), and Boolean circuits (Hrǔbes et al., ICALP 2019). Our characterization also establishes that for the subclasses of symmetric sets that we consider, the finite-degree Z-closures have low computational complexity. A key ingredient in our characterization is a new variant of finite-degree Z-closures, defined using vanishing conditions on only symmetric polynomials satisfying a degree bound.

Hopf structures in the representation theory of direct products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combinatorial Hopf algebras give a linear algebraic structure to infinite families of combinatorial objects, a technique further enriched by the categorification of these structure via the representation theory of families of algebras. This paper examines a fundamental construction in group theory, the direct product, and how it can be used to build representation theoretic Hopf algebras out of towers of groups. A key special case gives us the noncommutative symmetric functions NSym, but there are many things that we can say for the general Hopf algebras, including the structure of their character groups and a formula for the antipode.
A characterization of the algebraic degree in semidefinite programming
Published in Collectanea Mathematica, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we show that the algebraic degree in semidefinite programming can be expressed in terms of the coefficient of a certain monomial in a doubly symmetric polynomial. This characterization of the algebraic degree allows us to use the theory of symmetric polynomials to obtain many interesting results of Nie, Ranestad and Sturmfels in a simpler way.

New modular symmetric function and its applications: Modular $s$-Stirling numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider a generalization of the Stirling number sequence of both kinds by using a specialization of a new family of symmetric functions. We give combinatorial interpretations for this symmetric functions by means of weighted lattice path and tilings. We also present some new convolutions involving the complete and elementary symmetric functions. Additionally, we introduce different families of set partitions to give combinatorial interpretations for the modular $s$-Stirling numbers.

A horizontal-strip LLT polynomial is determined by its weighted graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that two horizontal-strip LLT polynomials are equal if the associated weighted graphs defined by the author in a previous paper are isomorphic. This provides a sufficient condition for equality of horizontal-strip LLT polynomials and yields a well-defined LLT polynomial indexed by a weighted graph. We use this to prove some new relations between LLT polynomials and we explore a connection with extended chromatic symmetric functions.
A Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Grothendieck polynomials of Grassmannian type
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, Vol. 28 (2024), 155-168 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Grothendieck polynomials appearing in the K-theory of Grassmannians, which are analogs of Schur polynomials. This paper aims to establish a version of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Grothendieck polynomials of the Grassmannian type. This rule allows us to express the product of a Grothendieck polynomial with a power sum symmetric polynomial into a linear combination of other Grothendieck polynomials.

Peak algebras in combinatorial Hopf algebras
The peak algebra is originally introduced by Stembridge using enriched $P$-partitions. Using the character theory by Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile, the peak algebra is also the image of $Θ$, the universal morphism between certain combinatorial Hopf algebras. We extend the notion of peak algebras and theta maps to shuffle, tensor, and symmetric algebras. As examples, we study the peak algebras of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables and the graded associated Hopf algebra on permutations. We also introduce a new shuffle basis of quasi-symmetric functions that its elements are the eigenfunctions of $Θ$. Using this new basis, we show that the peak algebra is the space spanned by the set of shuffle basis elements indexed by compositions whose all parts are odd.

Auto-correlation functions for unitary groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute the auto-correlations functions of order $m\ge 1$ for the characteristic polynomials of random matrices from certain subgroups of the unitary groups $\U(2)$ and $\U(3)$ by applying branching rules. These subgroups can be understood as analogs of Sato--Tate groups of $\USp(4)$ in our previous paper. This computation yields symmetric polynomial identities with $m$-variables involving irreducible characters of $\U(m)$ for all $m \ge 1$ in an explicit, uniform way.

Fibonacci numbers, consecutive patterns, and inverse peaks
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 141: Article #102406, 19 pp., 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We give multiple proofs of two formulas concerning the enumeration of permutations avoiding a monotone consecutive pattern with a certain value for the inverse peak number or inverse left peak number statistic. The enumeration in both cases is given by a sequence related to Fibonacci numbers. We also show that there is exactly one permutation whose inverse peak number is zero among all permutations with any fixed descent composition, and we give a few elementary consequences of this fact. Our proofs involve generating functions, symmetric functions, regular expressions, and monomino-domino tilings.

Lattice Models, Hamiltonian Operators, and Symmetric Functions
We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation. The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models. Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)
Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

A Generalization of Descent Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of a descent polynomial, a function in enumerative combinatorics that counts permutations with specific properties, enjoys a revived recent research interest due to its connection with other important notions in combinatorics, viz. peak polynomials and symmetric functions. We define the function $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ as a generalization of the descent polynomial and we prove that for any positive integer $m$, this function is a polynomial in $n$ for sufficiently large $n$ (similarly to the descent polynomial). We obtain an explicit formula for $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ when $m$ is sufficiently large. We look at the coefficients of $\mathfrak{d}^{m}(I,n)$ in different falling factorial bases. We prove the positivity of the coefficients and discover a combinatorial interpretation for them. This result is similar to the positivity result of Diaz-Lopez et al. for the descent polynomial.
