We study a $b$-deformation of monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We give an evolution equation for this model and derive from it Virasoro constraints, thereby proving a conjecture of Féray on Jack characters. A combinatorial model of non-oriented monotone Hurwitz maps which generalizes monotone transposition factorizations is provided.
In the case $b=1$ we obtain an explicit Schur expansion of the model and show that it obeys the BKP integrable hierarchy. This Schur expansion also proves a conjecture of Oliveira--Novaes relating zonal polynomials with irreducible representations of $O(N)$. We also relate the model to an $O(N)$ version of the Brézin--Gross--Witten integral, which we solve explicitly in terms of Pfaffians in the case of even multiplicities.

We discover new linear relations between the chromatic symmetric functions of certain sequences of graphs and apply these relations to find new families of e-positive unit interval graphs. Motivated by the results of Gebhard and Sagan, we revisit their ideas and reinterpret their equivalence relation in terms of a new quotient algebra of NCSym. We investigate the projection of the chromatic symmetric function $Y_G$ in noncommuting variables in this quotient algebra, which defines $y_{G : v}$, the chromatic symmetric function of a graph G centred at a vertex v. We then apply our methods to $y_{G :v}$ and find new families of unit interval graphs that are (e)-positive, a stronger condition than classical e-positivity, thus confirming new cases of the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.
In our study of $y_{G : v}$, we also describe methods of constructing new e-positive graphs from given $(e)$-positive graphs and classify the (e)-positivity of trees and cut vertices. We moreover construct a related quotient algebra of NCQSym to prove theorems relating the coefficients of $y_{G : v}$ to acyclic orientations of graphs, including a noncommutative refinement of Stanley's sink theorem.

Plethysm is a fundamental operation in symmetric function theory, derived directly from its connection with representation theory. However, it does not admit a simple combinatorial interpretation, and finding coefficients of Schur function plethysms is a major open question.
In this paper, we introduce a graph-theoretic interpretation for any plethysm based on the chromatic symmetric function. We use this interpretation to give simple proofs of new and previously known plethystic identities, as well as chromatic symmetric function identities.
A Determinantal Identity for the Permanent of a Rank 2 Matrix

We prove an identity relating the permanent of a rank $2$ matrix and the determinants of its Hadamard powers. When viewed in the right way, the resulting formula looks strikingly similar to an identity of Carlitz and Levine, suggesting the possibility that these are actually special cases of some more general identity (or class of identities) connecting permanents and determinants. The proof combines some basic facts from the theory of symmetric functions with an application of a famous theorem of Binet and Cauchy in linear algebra.

In 1991, Craig Gotsman and Nathan Linial conjectured that for all $n$ and $d$, the average sensitivity of a degree-$d$ polynomial threshold function on $n$ variables is maximized by the degree-$d$ symmetric polynomial which computes the parity function on the $d$ layers of the hypercube with Hamming weight closest to $n/2$. We refute the conjecture for almost all $d$ and for almost all $n$, and we confirm the conjecture in many of the remaining cases.
A natural basis for intersection numbers
We advertise elementary symmetric polynomials $e_i$ as the natural basis for generating series $A_{g,n}$ of intersection numbers of genus g and n marked points. Closed formulae for $A_{g,n}$ are known for genera $0$ and $1$ -- this approach provides formulae for $g = 2,3,4$, together with an algorithm to compute the formula for any g. The claimed naturality of the e_i basis relies in the unexpected vanishing of some coefficients with a clear pattern: we conjecture that $A_{g,n}$ can have at most $g$ factors $e_i$, with $i>1$, in its expansion. This observation promotes a paradigm for more general cohomology classes. As an application of the conjecture, we find new integral representations of $A_{g,n}$, which recover expressions for the Weil-Petersson volumes in terms of Bessel functions.
Some new symmetric structures in Ramsey theory
In this article, we will investigate several new configurations in Ramsey Theory, using the $\ostar_{l,k}$-operation on the set of integers, recently introduced in \cite{key-4}. This operation is useful to study symmetric structures in the set of integers, such as monochromatic configurations of the form $\left\{ x,y,x+y+xy\right\} $ as one of its simplest case. In \cite{key-4}, the author has studied more general symmetric structures. It has been shown that the Hindman's Theorem, van der Waerden's Theorem, Deuber's Theorem have their own symmetric versions. In this article we will explore several new structures, including polynomial versions of these symmetric structures and some of its variants. As a result, we get several new symmetric polynomial configurations as well as new linear symmetric patterns. In the final section, we will also introduce two new operations on the set of non-negative integers $\mathbb{N}$, to obtain further new configurations.
Quantum immanants, double Young-Capelli bitableaux and Schur shifted symmetric functions

In this paper are introduced two classes of elements in the enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$: the \emph{double Young-Capelli bitableaux} $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ T$}\ ]$ and the \emph{central} \emph{Schur elements} $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$, that act in a remarkable way on the highest weight vectors of irreducible Schur modules.
Any element $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ is the sum of all double Young-Capelli bitableaux $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ S$}\ ]$, $S$ row (strictly) increasing Young tableaux of shape $\widetildeλ$. The Schur elements $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ are proved to be the preimages - with respect to the Harish-Chandra isomorphism - of the \emph{shifted Schur polynomials} $s_{λ|n}^* \in Λ^*(n)$. Hence, the Schur elements are the same as the Okounkov \textit{quantum immanants}, recently described by the present authors as linear combinations of \emph{Capelli immanants}. This new presentation of Schur elements/quantum immanants doesn't involve the irreducible characters of symmetric groups. The Capelli elements $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ are column Schur elements and the Nazarov-Umeda elements $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$ are row Schur elements. The duality in $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ follows from a combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ on irreducible modules that is {\it{dual}} (in the sense of shapes/partitions) to the combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$.
The passage $n \rightarrow \infty$ for the algebras $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ is obtained both as direct and inverse limit in the category of filtered algebras, via the \emph{Olshanski decomposition/projection}.
Polystability in positive characteristic and degree lower bounds for invariant rings

We develop a representation theoretic technique for detecting closed orbits that is applicable in all characteristics. Our technique is based on Kempf's theory of optimal subgroups and we make some improvements and simplify the theory from a computational perspective. We exhibit our technique in many examples and in particular, give an algorithm to decide if a symmetric polynomial in $n$-variables has a closed ${\rm SL}_n$ orbit.
As an important application, we prove exponential lower bounds on the maximal degree of a system of generators of invariant rings for two actions that are important from the perspective of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT). The first is the action of ${\rm SL}(V)$ on ${\rm Sym}^3(V)^{\oplus 3}$, the space of 3-tuples of cubic forms, and the second is the action of ${\rm SL}(V) \times {\rm SL}(W) \times {\rm SL}(Z)$ on the tensor space $(V \otimes W \otimes Z)^{\oplus 5}$. In both these cases, we prove an exponential lower degree bound for a system of invariants that generate the invariant ring or that define the null cone.

We define, for each subset $S$ of the set $\mathcal{P}$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. $Lie_n^\emptyset$ is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra, while $Lie_n^\mathcal{P}$ is the module $C\!onj_n$ of the conjugacy action of $S_n$ on $n$-cycles. For arbitrary $S$ the module $Lie_n^{S}$ interpolates between the representations $Lie_n$ and $C\!onj_n.$ We consider the symmetric and exterior powers of $Lie_n^S.$ These are the analogues of the higher Lie modules of Thrall. We show that the Frobenius characteristic of these higher $Lie_n^S$ modules can be elegantly expressed as a multiplicity-free sum of power sums. In particular this establishes the Schur positivity of new classes of sums of power sums.
More generally, for each nonempty subset $T$ of positive integers we define a sequence of symmetric functions $f_n^T$ of homogeneous degree $n.$ We show that the series $\sum_{λ, λ_i\in T} p_λ$ can be expressed as symmetrised powers of the functions $f_n^T$, analogous to the higher Lie modules first defined by Thrall. This in turn allows us to unify previous results on the Schur positivity of multiplicity-free sums of power sums, as well as investigate new ones. We also uncover some curious plethystic relationships between $f_n^T$, the conjugacy action and the Lie representation.

Motivated by Stanley's conjecture on the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions, we prove a couple of identities showing that skew Jack symmetric functions are semi-invariant up to translation and rotation of a $π$ angle of the skew diagram. It follows that, in some special cases, the coefficients of the skew Jack symmetric functions with respect to the basis of the monomial symmetric functions are polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients.
Multiplicative and semi-multiplicative functions on non-crossing partitions, and relations to cumulants

We consider the group $(\mathcal{G},*)$ of unitized multiplicative functions in the incidence algebra of non-crossing partitions, where ``$*$'' denotes the convolution operation. We introduce a larger group $(\widetilde{\mathcal{G}},*)$ of unitized functions from the same incidence algebra, which satisfy a weaker condition of being ``semi-multiplicative''. The natural action of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ on sequences of multilinear functionals of a non-commutative probability space captures the combinatorics of transitions between moments and some brands of cumulants that are studied in the non-commutative probability literature. We use the framework of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ in order to explain why the multiplication of free random variables can be very nicely described in terms of Boolean cumulants and more generally in terms of $t$-Boolean cumulants, a one-parameter interpolation between free and Boolean cumulants arising from work of Bozejko and Wysoczanski.
It is known that the group $\mathcal{G}$ can be naturally identified as the group of characters of the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions. We show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ can also be identified as group of characters of a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{T}$, which is an incidence Hopf algebra in the sense of Schmitt. Moreover, the inclusion of $\mathcal{G}$ into $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ turns out to be the dual of a natural bialgebra homomorphism from $\mathcal{T}$ onto Sym.

The fusion ring for $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories is known to be isomorphic to a factor ring of the ring of symmetric polynomials presented by Schur polynomials. We introduce a deformation of this factor ring associated with eigenpolynomials for the elliptic Ruijsenaars difference operators. The corresponding Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are governed by a Pieri rule stemming from the eigenvalue equation. The orthogonality of the eigenbasis gives rise to an analog of the Verlinde formula. In the trigonometric limit, our construction recovers the refined $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(n)_m$ Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring associated with the Macdonald polynomials.
Grothendieck to Lascoux expansions

We establish the conjecture of Reiner and Yong for an explicit combinatorial formula for the expansion of a Grothendieck polynomial into the basis of Lascoux polynomials. This expansion is a subtle refinement of its symmetric function version due to Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong, which gives the expansion of stable Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations into Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. Our expansion is the K-theoretic analogue of that of a Schubert polynomial into Demazure characters, whose symmetric analogue is the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function into Schur functions. Our expansions extend to flagged Grothendieck polynomials.
Stability of combinatorial polynomials and its applications
The aim of this paper is to make a systematical study on the stability of polynomials in combinatorics.
Applying the characterizations of Borcea and Brändén concerning linear operators preserving stability, we present criteria for real stability and Hurwitz stability. We also give a criterion for Hurwitz stability of the Turán expressions. As applications, we derive some stability results occurred in the literature in a unified manner. In addition, we obtain the Hurwitz stability of Turán expressions for alternating runs polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ and solve a conjecture concerning Hurwitz stability of alternating runs polynomials defined on a dual set of Stirling permutations.
Furthermore, we prove that the Hurwitz stability of any symmetric polynomial implies its semi-$γ$-positivity. We study a class of symmetric polynomials and derive many nice properties including Hurwitz stability, semi-$γ$-positivity, non $γ$-positivity, unimodality, strong $q$-log-convexity, the Jacobi continued fraction expansion and the relation with derivative polynomials. In particular, these properties of the alternating descents polynomials of types $A$ and $B$ can be obtained in a unified approach.
Finally, we use real stability to prove a criterion for zeros interlacing between a polynomial and its reciprocal polynomial, which implies the alternatingly increasing property. This criterion extends a result of Brändén and Solus and unifies such properties for many combinatorial polynomials, including ascent polynomials for $k$-ary words, descent polynomials on signed Stirling permutations and $q$-analog of descent polynomials on colored permutations, and so on. We prove the alternatingly increasing property and zeros interlacing for two kinds of peak polynomials on the dual set of Stirling permutations.
Stable spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, combinatorial identities, and half-space Yang-Baxter random field
Stable spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials labeled by partitions were recently introduced by Borodin and Wheeler in the context of higher spin six vertex models, which are one-parameter deformation of the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We present a new combinatorial definition for the stable spin Hall-Littlewood polynomials, and derive a series of new combinatorial identities, including the skew Littlewood identity, refined Cauchy identity and refined Littlewood identity.
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, Bufetov and Petrov introduced local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation. Combining the skew Littlewood identity and these moves, we introduce the half-space Yang-Baxter random field for stable spin Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We match the lengths of the partitions in this field with a new dynamic version of stochastic six vertex model in the half-quadrant, which can be mapped to a dynamic version of discrete-time interacting particle system on the half-line with an open boundary.

The Cauchy identities play an important role in the theory of symmetric functions. It is known that Cauchy sums for the $q$-Whittaker and the skew Schur polynomials produce the same factorized expressions modulo a $q$-Pochhammer symbol. We consider the sums with restrictions on the length of the first rows for labels of both polynomials and prove an identity which relates them. The proof is based on techniques from integrable probability: we rewrite the identity in terms of two probability measures: the $q$-Whittaker measure and the periodic Schur measure. The relation follows by comparing their Fredholm determinant formulas.

For a tree $T$, consider its smallest subtree $T^{\circ}$ containing all vertices of degree at least $3$. Then the remaining edges of $T$ lie on disjoint paths each with one endpoint on $T^{\circ}$. We show that the chromatic symmetric function of $T$ determines the size of $T^{\circ}$, and the multiset of the lengths of these incident paths. In particular, this generalizes a proof of Martin, Morin, and Wagner that the chromatic symmetric function distinguishes spiders.

Let G be a combinatorial graph with vertices V and edges E. A proper coloring of G is an assignment of colors to the vertices such that no edge connects two vertices of the same color. These are the colorings considered in the famous Four Color Theorem. It turns out that the number of proper colorings of G using t colors is a polynomial in t, called the chromatic polynomial of G. This polynomial has many wonderful properties. It also has the surprising habit of appearing in contexts which, a priori, have nothing to do with graph coloring. We will survey three such instances involving acyclic orientations, hyperplane arrangements, and increasing forests. In addition, connections to symmetric functions and algebraic geometry will be mentioned.
