"Pushing" our way from the valley Delta to the generalised valley Delta
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [Haglund, Remmel, Wilson 2018] the authors state two versions of the so called Delta conjecture, the rise version and the valley version. Of the former, they also give a more general statement in which zero labels are also allowed. In [Qiu, Wilson 2020], the corresponding generalisation of the valley version is also formulated. In [D'Adderio, Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020], the authors use a pushing algorithm to prove the generalised version of the shuffle theorem. An extension of that argument is used in [Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020] to formulate a valley version of the (generalised) Delta square conjecture, and to suggest a symmetric function identity later stated and proved in [D'Adderio, Romero 2020]. In this paper, we use the pushing algorithm together with the aforementioned symmetric function identity in order to prove that the valley version of the Delta conjecture implies the valley version of the generalised Delta conjecture, which means that they are actually equivalent. Combining this with the results in [Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020], we prove that the valley version of the Delta conjecture also implies the corresponding generalised Delta square conjecture.

Theorems and Conjectures on Some Rational Generating Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $I_n(x)=\prod_{i=1}^n \left( 1+x^{F_{i+1}}\right)$, where $F_{i+1}$ denotes a Fibonacci number. Let $v_r(n)$ denote the sum of the $r$th powers of the coefficients of $I_n(x)$. Our prototypical result is that $\sum_{n\geq 0} v_2(n)x^n= (1-2x^2)/(1-2x-2x^2+2x^3)$. We give many related results and conjectures. A certain infinite poset $\mathfrak{F}$ is naturally associated with $I_n(x)$. We discuss some combinatorial properties of $\mathfrak{F}$ and a natural generalization, including a symmetric function that encodes the flag $h$-vector of $\mathfrak{F}$.

Colored Fermionic Vertex Models and Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this text we introduce and analyze families of symmetric functions arising as partition functions for colored fermionic vertex models associated with the quantized affine Lie superalgebra $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$. We establish various combinatorial results for these vertex models and symmetric functions, which include the following. (1) We apply the fusion procedure to the fundamental $R$-matrix for $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$ to obtain an explicit family of vertex weights satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. (2) We define families of symmetric functions as partition functions for colored, fermionic vertex models under these fused weights. We further establish several combinatorial properties for these symmetric functions, such as branching rules and Cauchy identities. (3) We show that the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials arise as special cases of these symmetric functions. This enables us to show both old and new properties about the LLT polynomials, including Cauchy identities, contour integral formulas, stability properties, and branching rules under a certain family of plethystic transformations. (4) A different special case of our symmetric functions gives rise to a new family of polynomials called factorial LLT polynomials. We show they generalize the LLT polynomials, while also satisfying a vanishing condition reminiscent of that satisfied by the factorial Schur functions. (5) By considering our vertex model on a cylinder, we obtain fermionic partition function formulas for both the symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. (6) We prove combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the LLT polynomials when expanded in the modified Hall-Littlewood basis, as partition functions for a $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (2 | n) \big)$ vertex model.

Gelfand--Tsetlin-type weight bases for all special linear Lie algebra representations corresponding to skew Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the famous weight basis constructions of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ obtained by Gelfand and Tsetlin in 1950. Using combinatorial methods, we construct one such basis for each finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ associated to a given skew Schur function. Our constructions use diamond-colored distributive lattices of skew-shaped semistandard tableaux that generalize some classical Gelfand--Tsetlin (GT) lattices. Our constructions take place within the context of a certain programmatic study of poset models for semisimple Lie algebra representations and Weyl group symmetric functions undertaken by the first-named author and others. Some key aspects of the methodology of that program are recapitulated here. Combinatorial and representation-theoretic applications of our constructions are pursued here and elsewhere.

Renormalization of quasisymmetric functions
As a natural basis of the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, monomial quasisymmetric functions are formal power series defined from compositions. The same definition applies to left weak compositions, while leads to divergence for other weak compositions. We adapt the method of renormalization in quantum field theory, in the framework of Connes and Kreimer, to deal with such divergency. This approach defines monomial quasisymmetric functions for any weak composition as power series while extending the quasi-shuffle (stuffle) relation satisfied by the usual quasisymmetric functions. The algebra of renormalized quasisymmetric functions thus obtained turns out to be isomorphic to the quasi-shuffle algebra of weak compositions, giving the former a natural Hopf algebra structure and the latter a power series realization. This isomorphism also gives the free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra a power series realization, in support of a suggestion of Rota that Rota-Baxter algebra should provide a broad context for generalizations of symmetric functions.

Lambert $W$-Function Branch Identities
After defining in detail the Lambert $W$-function branches, we give a large number of exact identities involving (infinite) symmetric functions of these branches, as well as geometrically convergent series for all the branches. In doing so, we introduce a family of polynomials which may be of independent interest.

A combinatorial formula for the nabla operator
Published in Compositio Math. 161 (2025) 800-830 • View PublicationBIB
We present an LLT-type formula for a general power of the nabla operator applied to the Cauchy product for the modified Macdonald polynomials, and use it to deduce a new proof of the generalized shuffle theorem describing $\nabla^k e_n$, and the Elias-Hogancamp formula for $(\nabla^k p_1^n,e_n)$ as corollaries. We give a direct proof of the theorem by verifying that the LLT expansion satisfies the defining properties of $\nabla^k$, such as triangularity in the dominance order, as well as a geometric proof based on a method for counting bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ due to the second author. These formulas are related to an affine paving of the type A unramified affine Springer fiber studied by Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson, and also to Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions.
A domino tableau-based view on type B Schur-positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Over the past years, major attention has been drawn to the question of identifying Schur-positive sets, i.e. sets of permutations whose associated quasisymmetric function is symmetric and can be written as a non-negative sum of Schur symmetric functions. The set of arc permutations, i.e. the set of permutations $π$ in $S_n$ such that for any $1\leq j \leq n$, $\{π(1),π(2),\dots,π(j)\}$ is an interval in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is one of the most noticeable examples. This paper introduces a new type B extension of Schur-positivity to signed permutations based on Chow's quasisymmetric functions and generating functions for domino tableaux. As an important characteristic, our development is compatible with the works of Solomon regarding the descent algebra of Coxeter groups. In particular, we design descent preserving bijections between signed arc permutations and sets of domino tableaux to show that they are indeed type B Schur-positive.
Chromatic symmetric functions of Dyck paths and q-rook theory (extended abstract)
The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics, and LLT polynomials. In the case of, so-called, abelian Dyck paths they are also curiously related to placements of non-attacking rooks by results of Stanley-Stembridge (1993) and Guay-Paquet (2013). For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers, which are a variant of the ones introduced by Garsia and Remmel. Among our main results is a new proof of Guay-Paquet's elegant identity expressing the $q$-CSFs in a CSF basis with $q$-hit coefficients. We further show its equivalence to the Abreu-Nigro identity expanding the $q$-CSF in the elementary symmetric functions. This is the FPSAC extended abstract version. The full version is at ArXiv: 2104.07599.

The Stable Limit DAHA and the Double Dyck Path Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the compatibility of the action of the DAHA of type GL with two inverse systems of polynomial rings obtained from the standard Laurent polynomial representations. In both cases, the crucial analysis is that of the compatibility of the action of the Cherednik operators. Each case leads to a representation of a limit structure (the +/- stable limit DAHA) on a space of almost symmetric polynomials in infinitely many variables (the standard representation). As an application, we show that the defining representation of the double Dyck path algebra arises from the standard representation of the +stable limit DAHA.
Decorated Dyck paths, polyominoes, and the Delta conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss the combinatorics of decorated Dyck paths and decorated parallelogram polyominoes, extending to the decorated case the main results of both [Haglund 2004] and [Aval et al. 2014]. This settles in particular the cases $\langle\cdot,e_{n-d}h_d\rangle$ and $\langle\cdot,h_{n-d}h_d\rangle$ of the Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2018). Along the way, we introduce some new statistics, formulate some new conjectures, prove some new identities of symmetric functions, and answer a few open problems in the literature (e.g. from [Haglund et al. 2018], [Zabrocki 2016], [Aval et al. 2015]). The main technical tool is a new identity in the theory of Macdonald polynomials that extends a theorem of Haglund in [Haglund 2004]. This is an edited merge of arXiv:1712.08787 and arXiv:1709.08736

Symmetric functions and Springer representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The characters of the (total) Springer representations are identified with the Green functions by Kazhdan [Israel J. Math. {\bf 28} (1977)], and the latter are identified with Hall-Littlewood's $Q$-functions by Green [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. (1955)]. In this paper, we present a purely algebraic proof that the (total) Springer representations of $\mathop{GL} ( n )$ are $\mathrm{Ext}$-orthogonal to each other, and show that it is compatible with the natural categorification of the ring of symmetric functions.
H-chromatic symmetric functions
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 29 (2022) 1 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce $H$-chromatic symmetric functions, $X_{G}^{H}$, which use the $H$-coloring of a graph $G$ to define a generalization of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions. We say two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ are $H$-chromatically equivalent if $X_{G_1}^{H} = X_{G_2}^{H}$, and use this idea to study uniqueness results for $H$-chromatic symmetric functions, with a particular emphasis on the case $H$ is a complete bipartite graph. We also show that several of the classical bases of the space of symmetric functions, i.e. the monomial symmetric functions, power sum symmetric functions, and elementary symmetric functions, can be realized as $H$-chromatic symmetric functions. We end with some conjectures and open problems.

Hilbert series of typical representations for Lie superalgebras
Let g be a basic classical Lie superalgebra over C. In the case of a typical weight whose every nonnegative integer multiple is also typical, we compute a closed form for the Hilbert series whose coefficients encode the dimensions of finite-dimensional irreducible typical g-representations. We give a formula for this Hilbert series in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. Additionally, we show a simple closed form in terms of differential operators.

A new order on integer partitions
Considering Schur positivity of differences of plethysms of homogeneous symmetric functions, we introduce a new relation on integer partitions. This relation is conjectured to be a partial order, with its restriction to one part partitions equivalent to the classical Foulkes conjecture. We establish some of the properties of this relation via the construction of explicit inclusion of modules whose characters correspond to the plethysms considered. We also prove some stability properties for the number of irreducible occurring in these modules as $n$ grows.
The twinning operation on graphs does not always preserve $e$-positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by Stanley's $\mathbf{(3+1)}$-free conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions, Foley, Hoàng and Merkel introduced the concept of strong $e$-positivity and conjectured that a graph is strongly $e$-positive if and only if it is (claw, net)-free. In order to study strongly $e$-positive graphs, they further introduced the twinning operation on a graph $G$ with respect to a vertex $v$, which adds a vertex $v'$ to $G$ such that $v$ and $v'$ are adjacent and any other vertex is adjacent to both of them or neither of them. Foley, Hoàng and Merkel conjectured that if $G$ is $e$-positive, then so is the resulting twin graph $G_v$ for any vertex $v$. Based on the theory of chromatic symmetric functions in non-commuting variables developed by Gebhard and Sagan, we establish the $e$-positivity of a class of graphs called tadpole graphs. By considering the twinning operation on a subclass of these graphs with respect to certain vertices we disprove the latter conjecture of Foley, Hoàng and Merkel. We further show that if $G$ is $e$-positive, the twin graph $G_v$ and more generally the clan graphs $G^{(k)}_v$ ($k \ge 1$) may not even be $s$-positive, where $G^{(k)}_v$ is obtained from $G$ by applying $k$ twinning operations to $v$.

Combinatorics of Double Grothendieck Polynomials
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 31(4) (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We give a proof of the generalized Cauchy identity for double Grothendieck polynomials, a combinatorial interpretation of the stable double Grothendieck polynomials in terms of triples of tableaux, and an interpolation between the stable double Grothendieck polynomial and the weak stable double Grothendieck polynomial. This so-called half weak stable double Grothendieck polynomial evaluated at $x=y$ generalizes the type $B$ Stanley symmetric function of Billey and Haiman and is $Q$-Schur positive by degree. We conclude with two open problems as well as a conjecture regarding the $K$-theoretic analogues of factorial Schur $Q$-functions defined by Ikeda and Naruse. The conjecture is supported by code given in the appendices.

Primitive Elements of the Hopf Algebras of Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
The character theory of symmetric groups, and the theory of symmetric functions, both make use of the combinatorics of Young tableaux, such as the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, Schuetzenberger's "jeu de taquin", and evacuation. In 1995 Poirier and the second author introduced some algebraic structures, different from the plactic monoid, which induce some products and coproducts of tableaux, with homomorphisms. Their starting point are the two dual Hopf algebras of permutations, introduced by the authors in 1995. In 2006 Aguiar and Sottile studied in more detail the Hopf algebra of permutations: among other things, they introduce a new basis, by Moebius inversion in the poset of weak order, that allows them to describe the primitive elements of the Hopf algebra of permutations. In the present note, by a similar method, we determine the primitive elements of the Poirier-Reutenauer algebra of tableaux, using a partial order on tableaux defined by Taskin.

Symmetric polynomials associated with numerical semigroups
We study a new kind of symmetric polynomials P_n(x_1,...,x_m) of degree n in m real variables, which have arisen in the theory of numerical semigroups. We establish their basic properties and find their representation through the power sums E_k=\sum_{j=1}^m x_j^k. We observe a visual similarity between normalized polynomials P_n(x_1,...,x_m)/χ_m, where χ_m=\prod_{j=1}^m x_j, and a polynomial part of a partition function W(s,{d_1,...,d_m}), which gives a number of partitions of s\ge 0 into m positive integers d_j, and put forward a conjecture about their relationship.
$K$-theoretic Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions are part of a family of inhomogenous symmetric functions whose top homogeneous components are Catalan functions, the Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety. Lam-Schilling-Shimozono identified the $K$-$k$-Schur functions as Schubert representatives for $K$-homology of the affine Grassmannian for SL$_{k+1}$. Our perspective reveals that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions satisfy a shift invariance property, and we deduce positivity of their branching coefficients from a positivity result of Baldwin and Kumar. We further show that a slight adjustment of our formulation for $K$-$k$-Schur functions produces a second shift-invariant basis which conjecturally has both positive branching and a rectangle factorization property. Building on work of Ikeda-Iwao-Maeno, we conjecture that this second basis gives the images of the Lenart-Maeno quantum Grothendieck polynomials under a $K$-theoretic analog of the Peterson isomorphism.
