A symmetric function of increasing forests
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e35 • View PublicationBIB
For an indifference graph $G$ we define a symmetric function of increasing spanning forests of $G$. We prove that this symmetric function satisfies certain linear relations, which are also satisfied by the chromatic quasisymmetric function and unicellular LLT polynomials. As a consequence we give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the LLT polynomial in the elementary basis (up to a factor of a power of $(q-1)$), strengthening the description given by Alexandersson and Sulzgruber.

A symmetric Bloch-Okounkov theorem
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 8, 19 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
The algebra of so-called shifted symmetric functions on partitions has the property that for all elements a certain generating series, called the $q$-bracket, is a quasimodular form. More generally, if a graded algebra $A$ of functions on partitions has the property that the $q$-bracket of every element is a quasimodular form of the same weight, we call $A$ a quasimodular algebra. We introduce a new quasimodular algebra consisting of symmetric polynomials in the part sizes and multiplicities.

Chromatic symmetric functions from the modular law
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we show how to compute the chromatic quasisymmetric function of indifference graphs from the modular law introduced by Guay-Paquet. We provide an algorithm which works for any function that satisfies this law, such as unicellular LLT polynomials. When the indifference graph has bipartite complement it reduces to a planar network, in this case, we prove that the coefficients of the chromatic quasisymmetric function in the elementary basis are positive unimodal polynomials and characterize them as certain $q$-hit numbers (up to a factor). Finally, we discuss the logarithmic concavity of the coefficients of the chromatic quasisymmetric function.
Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric plane partitions
We study the Schur polynomial expansion of a family of symmetric polynomials related to the refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to their inversion number, complementary inversion number and the position of the unique $1$ in the top row. We prove that the expansion can be expressed as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions and we are also able to determine the coefficients. This establishes a new connection between alternating sign matrices and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions as well as with descending plane partitions. As a by-product we obtain an interesting map from totally symmetric plane partitions to Dyck paths. The proof is based on a new, quite general antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula.

Polynomial traces and elementary symmetric functions in the latent roots of a non-central Wishart matrix
Published in Journal Multivariate Analysis, vol. 179, September (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials are the tools usually addressed in the literature to deal with the expected value of the elementary symmetric functions in non-central Wishart latent roots. The method here proposed recovers the expected value of these symmetric functions by using the umbral operator applied to the trace of suitable polynomial matrices and their cumulants. The employment of a suitable linear operator in place of hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials was conjectured by de Waal in 1972. Here we show how the umbral operator accomplishes this task and consequently represents an alternative tool to deal with these symmetric functions. When special formal variables are plugged in the variables, the evaluation through the umbral operator deletes all the monomials in the latent roots except those contributing in the elementary symmetric functions. Cumulants further simplify the computations taking advantage of the convolution structure of the polynomial trace. Open problems are addressed at the end of the paper.

Newell-Littlewood numbers
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 374 (2021), 6331-6366 • View PublicationBIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers are defined in terms of their celebrated cousins, the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Both arise as tensor product multiplicities for a classical Lie group. They are the structure coefficients of the K. Koike-I. Terada basis of the ring of symmetric functions. Recent work of H. Hahn studies them, motivated by R. Langlands' beyond endoscopy proposal; we address her work with a simple characterization of detection of Weyl modules. This motivates further study of the combinatorics of the numbers. We consider analogues of ideas of J. De Loera-T. McAllister, H. Derksen-J. Weyman, S. Fomin-W. Fulton-C.-K. Li-Y.-T. Poon, W. Fulton, R. King-C. Tollu-F. Toumazet, M. Kleber, A. Klyachko, A. Differential operators on Schur and Schubert polynomials
This paper deals with decreasing operators on back stable Schubert polynomials. We study two operators $ξ$ and $\nabla$ of degree $-1$, which satisfy the Leibniz rule. Furthermore, we show that all other such operators are linear combinations of $ξ$ and $\nabla$. For the case of Schur functions, these two operators fully determine the product of Schur functions, i.e., it is possible to define the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients only from $ξ$ and $\nabla$. This new point of view on Schur functions gives us an elementary proof of the Giambelli identity and of Jacobi-Trudi identities. For the case of Schubert polynomials, we construct a bigger class of decreasing operators as expressions in terms of $ξ$ and $\nabla$, which are indexed by Young diagrams. Surprisingly, these operators are related to Stanley symmetric functions. In particular, we extend bosonic operators from Schur to Schubert polynomials.

The Gini Index of an Integer Partition
Published in J. Integer Seq. 23 (2020) 20.9.7 • Search Publication
The Gini index is a number that attempts to measure how equitably a resource is distributed throughout a population, and is commonly used in economics as a measurement of inequality of wealth or income. The Gini index is often defined as the area between the Lorenz curve of a distribution and the line of equality, normalized to be between zero and one. In this fashion, we define a Gini index on the set of integer partitions and show that it is closely related to the second elementary symmetric polynomial, and the dominance order on partitions. We conclude with a generating function for the Gini index, and discuss how it can be used to find lower bounds on the width of the dominance lattice.

A generalization of complete and elementary symmetric functions
In this paper, we consider the generating functions of the complete and elementary symmetric functions and provide a new generalization of these classical symmetric functions. Some classical relationships involving the complete and elementary symmetric functions are reformulated in a more general context. Combinatorial interpretations of these generalized symmetric functions are also introduced.

Petrie symmetric functions
Published in Shortened version in: Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 5, pp. 947-1013 • View PublicationBIB
For any positive integer $k$ and nonnegative integer $m$, we consider the symmetric function $G\left( k,m\right)$ defined as the sum of all monomials of degree $m$ that involve only exponents smaller than $k$. We call $G\left( k,m\right)$ a "Petrie symmetric function" in honor of Flinders Petrie, as the coefficients in its expansion in the Schur basis are determinants of Petrie matrices (and thus belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $ by a classical result of Gordon and Wilkinson). More generally, we prove a Pieri-like rule for expanding a product of the form $G\left( k,m\right) \cdot s_μ$ in the Schur basis whenever $μ$ is a partition; all coefficients in this expansion belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $. We also show that $G\left( k,1\right) ,G\left( k,2\right) ,G\left( k,3\right) ,\ldots$ form an algebraically independent generating set for the symmetric functions when $1-k$ is invertible in the base ring, and we prove a conjecture of Liu and Polo about the expansion of $G\left( k,2k-1\right)$ in the Schur basis.

A combinatorial expansion of vertical-strip LLT polynomials in the basis of elementary symmetric functions
Published in Advances in Mathematics Volume 400, (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We give a new characterization of the vertical-strip LLT polynomials $\mathrm{LLT}_P(x;q)$ as the unique family of symmetric functions that satisfy certain combinatorial relations. This characterization is then used to prove an explicit combinatorial expansion of vertical-strip LLT polynomials in terms of elementary symmetric functions. Such formulas were conjectured independently by A. Garsia et al. and the first named author, and are governed by the combinatorics of orientations of unit-interval graphs. The obtained expansion is manifestly positive if $q$ is replaced by $q+1$, thus recovering a recent result of M. D'Adderio. Our results are based on linear relations among LLT polynomials that arise in the work of D'Adderio, and of E. Carlsson and A. Mellit. To some extent these relations are given new bijective proofs using colorings of unit-interval graphs. As a bonus we obtain a new characterization of chromatic quasisymmetric functions of unit-interval graphs.

Free-fermions and skew stable Grothendieck polynomials
Published in J Algebr Comb (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Skew stable Grothendieck polynomials are $K$-theoretic analogues of skew Schur polynomials. We give a free-fermionic presentation of skew stable Grothendieck polynomials and their dual symmetric functions. By using our presentation, we derive a family of determinantal formulas, which are $K$-analogues of the Jacobi-Trudi formula for skew Schur functions. We also introduce a combinatorial method to calculate certain expansions of skew (dual) stable Grothendieck polynomials by using the non-commutative supersymmetric Schur functions.

Non-orientable branched coverings, $b$-Hurwitz numbers, and positivity for multiparametric Jack expansions
Published in Adv. Math. 409, 108645, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so far towards the Matching-Jack conjecture and the "$b$-conjecture" of Goulden and Jackson from 1996, expansions of the $β$-ensemble matrix model, deformations of the HCIZ integral, and $b$-Hurwitz numbers that we introduce here and that are $b$-deformations of classical (single or double) Hurwitz numbers obtained for $b=0$. A key role in our proof is played by a combinatorial model of non-orientable constellations equipped with a suitable $b$-weighting, whose partition function satisfies an infinite set of PDEs. These PDEs have two definitions, one given by Lax equations, the other one following an explicit combinatorial decomposition.

A proof of the Theta Operator Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the context of the (generalized) Delta Conjecture and its compositional form, D'Adderio, Iraci, and Wyngaerd recently stated a conjecture relating two symmetric function operators, $D_k$ and $Θ_k$. We prove this Theta Operator Conjecture, finding it as a consequence of the five-term relation of Mellit and Garsia. As a result, we find surprising ways of writing the $D_k$ operators.

We construct Hopf algebras whose elements are representations of combinatorial automorphism groups, by generalising a theorem of Zelevinsky on Hopf algebras of representations of wreath products. As an application we attach symmetric functions to representations of graph automorphism groups, generalising and refining Stanley's chromatic symmetric function.

Spin q-Whittaker polynomials and deformed quantum Toda
Published • View PublicationBIB
Spin $q$-Whittaker symmetric polynomials labeled by partitions $λ$ were recently introduced by Borodin and Wheeler (arXiv:1701.06292) in the context of integrable $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ vertex models. They are a one-parameter deformation of the $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We present a new, more convenient modification of spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials and find two Macdonald type $q$-difference operators acting diagonally in these polynomials with eigenvalues, respectively, $q^{-λ_1}$ and $q^{λ_N}$ (where $λ$ is the polynomial's label). We study probability measures on interlacing arrays based on spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, and match their observables with known stochastic particle systems such as the $q$-Hahn TASEP. In a scaling limit as $q\nearrow 1$, spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials turn into a new one-parameter deformation of the $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ Whittaker functions. The rescaled Pieri type rule gives rise to a one-parameter deformation of the quantum Toda Hamiltonian. The deformed Hamiltonian acts diagonally on our new spin Whittaker functions. On the stochastic side, as $q\nearrow 1$ we discover a multilevel extension of the beta polymer model of Barraquand and Corwin (arXiv:1503.04117), and relate it to spin Whittaker functions.

Weakly norming graphs are edge-transitive
Published in Combinatorica, vol. 40, no. 4, pp. 601-604, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be the class of bounded measurable symmetric functions on $[0,1]^2$. For a function $h \in \mathcal{H}$ and a graph $G$ with vertex set $\{v_1,\ldots,v_n\}$ and edge set $E(G)$, define \[ t_G(h) \; = \; \int \cdots \int \prod_{\{v_i,v_j\} \in E(G)} h(x_i,x_j) \: dx_1 \cdots dx_n \: . \] Answering a question raised by Conlon and Lee, we prove that in order for $t_G(|h|)^{1/|E(G)|}$ to be a norm on $\mathcal{H}$, the graph $G$ must be edge-transitive.

Robinson-Schensted correspondence for unit interval orders
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Stanley-Stembridge conjecture associates a symmetric function to each natural unit interval order $\mathcal P$. In this paper, we define relations à la Knuth on the symmetric group for each $\mathcal P$ and conjecture that the associated $\mathcal P$-Knuth equivalence classes are Schur-positive, refining theorems of Gasharov, Brosnan-Chow, and Guay-Paquet. The resulting equivalence graphs fit into the framework of D graphs studied by Assaf. Furthermore, we conjecture that the Schur expansion is given by column-readings of $\mathcal P$-tableaux that occur in the equivalence class. We prove these conjectures for $\mathcal P$ avoiding two specific suborders by introducing $\mathcal P$-analog of Robinson-Schensted insertion, giving an answer to a long standing question of Chow.

Flagged Schur polynomial duality via a lattice path bijection
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 30(1) (2023) P1.5 • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves an identity between flagged Schur polynomials, giving a duality between row flags and column flags. This identity generalises both the binomial determinant duality theorem due to Gessel and Viennot and the symmetric function duality theorem due to Aitken. As corollaries we obtain the lifts of the binomial determinant duality theorem to $q$-binomial coefficients and to symmetric polynomials. Our method is a path counting argument on a novel lattice generalising that used by Gessel and Viennot.

A recursion for a symmetric function generalization of the $q$-Dyson constant term identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2000, Kadell gave an orthogonality conjecture for a symmetric function generalization of the $q$-Dyson constant term identity or the Zeilberger--Bressoud $q$-Dyson theorem. The non-zero part of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture is a constant term identity indexed by a weak composition $v=(v_1,\dots,v_n)$ in the case when only one $v_i\neq 0$. This conjecture was first proved by Károlyi, Lascoux and Warnaar in 2015. They further formulated a closed-form expression for the above mentioned constant term in the case when all the parts of $v$ are distinct. Recently we obtain a recursion for this constant term provided that the largest part of $v$ occurs with multiplicity one in $v$. In this paper, we generalize our previous result to all compositions $v$.
