Tuning as convex optimisation: a polynomial tuner for multi-parametric combinatorial samplers

Combinatorial samplers are algorithmic schemes devised for the approximate- and exact-size generation of large random combinatorial structures, such as context-free words, various tree-like data structures, maps, tilings, RNA molecules. They can be adapted to combinatorial specifications with additional parameters, allowing for a more flexible control over the output profile of parametrised combinatorial patterns. One can control, for instance, the number of leaves, profile of node degrees in trees or the number of certain sub-patterns in generated strings. However, such a flexible control requires an additional and nontrivial tuning procedure.
Using techniques of convex optimisation, we present an efficient tuning algorithm for multi-parametric combinatorial specifications. Our algorithm works in polynomial time in the system description length, the number of tuning parameters, the number of combinatorial classes in the specification, and the logarithm of the total target size. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on a series of practical examples, including rational, algebraic, and so-called Pólya specifications. We show how our method can be adapted to a broad range of less typical combinatorial constructions, including symmetric polynomials, labelled sets and cycles with cardinality lower bounds, simple increasing trees or substitutions. Finally, we discuss some practical aspects of our prototype tuner implementation and provide its benchmark results.

For a graph $G=(V, E)$ and $i, j\in V$, denote the distance between $i$ and $j$ in $G$ by $D(i, j)$ and the degrees of $i$, $j$ by $d_i$, $d_j$, respectively. Let $f(D(i, j), d_{i}, d_{j})$ be a function symmetric in $i$ and $j$. Define a matrix $W_f(G)$, called the weighted distance matrix, of $G$, with the $ij$-entry $W_f(G)(i, j)=f(D(i, j), d_{i}, d_{j})$ if $i\neq j$ and $W_f(G)(i, j)=0$ if $i=j$. In this paper, we prove that if the symmetric function $f$ satisfies that $f(D(i, j), (1+o(1))np, (1+o(1))np)=(1+o(1))f(D(i, j), np, np)$, then for almost all graphs $G_p$ in the $Erd\ddot{o}s$-$R\acute{e}nyi$ random graph model $\mathcal{G}_{n, p}$, the energy of $W_f(G_p)$ is $\{(\frac{8}{3π}\sqrt{p(1-p)}+o(1))\cdot|f(1, np, np)-f(2, np, np)|+o(|f(2, np, np)|)\}\cdot n^{3/2}$. As a consequence, we give the asymptotic values of energies of a variety of weighted distance matrices with function $f$ from distance-based only and mixed with degree-distance-based topological indices of chemical use. This generalizes our former result with only degree-based weights.

The ring of symmetric functions has a basis of dual Grothendieck polynomials that are inhomogeneous $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials. We prove that dual Grothendieck polynomials determine column distributions for a directed last-passage percolation model.
Truncated Homogeneous Symmetric Functions

Extending the elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions, we introduce the truncated homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ^{\dd}$ in $(\ref{THSF})$ for any integer partition $λ$, and show that the transition matrix from $h_λ^{\dd}$ to the power sum symmetric functions $p_λ$ is given by \[M(h^{\dd},p)=M'(p,m)z^{-1}D^{\dd},\] where $D^{\dd}$ and $z$ are nonsingular diagonal matrices. Consequently, $\{h_λ^{\dd}\}$ forms a basis of the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. In addition, we show that the generating function $H^{\dd}(t)=\ssum_{n\ge 0}h_n^{\dd}(x)t^n$ satisfies \[ω(H^{\dd}(t))=\left(H^{\dd}(-t)\right)^{-1},\] where $ω$ is the involution of $Λ$ sending each elementary symmetric function $e_λ$ to the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ$.
Branching Rules for Koornwinder Polynomials with One Column Diagrams and Matrix Inversions

We present an explicit formula for the transition matrix $\mathcal{C}$ from the type $BC_n$ Koornwinder polynomials $P_{(1^r)}(x|a,b,c,d|q,t)$ with one column diagrams, to the type $BC_n$ monomial symmetric polynomials $m_{(1^{r})}(x)$. The entries of the matrix $\mathcal{C}$ enjoy a set of four terms recursion relations. These recursions provide us with the branching rules for the Koornwinder polynomials with one column diagrams, namely the restriction rules from $BC_n$ to $BC_{n-1}$. To have a good description of the transition matrices involved, we introduce the following degeneration scheme of the Koornwinder polynomials: $P_{(1^r)}(x|a,b,c,d|q,t) \longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}(x|a,-a,c,d|q,t)\longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}(x|a,-a,c,-c|q,t) \longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}\big(x|t^{1/2}c,-t^{1/2}c,c,-c|q,t\big) \longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}\big(x|t^{1/2},-t^{1/2},1,-1|q,t\big)$. We prove that the transition matrices associated with each of these degeneration steps are given in terms of the matrix inversion formula of Bressoud. As an application, we give an explicit formula for the Kostka polynomials of type $B_n$, namely the transition matrix from the Schur polynomials $P^{(B_n,B_n)}_{(1^r)}(x|q;q,q)$ to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials $P^{(B_n,B_n)}_{(1^r)}(x|t;0,t)$. We also present a conjecture for the asymptotically free eigenfunctions of the $B_n$ $q$-Toda operator, which can be regarded as a branching formula from the $B_n$ $q$-Toda eigenfunction restricted to the $A_{n-1}$ $q$-Toda eigenfunctions.

We investigate the zonal polynomials, a family of symmetric polynomials that appear in many mathematical contexts, such as multivariate statistics, differential geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics. We present two computer algebra packages, in SageMath and in Mathematica, for their computation. With the help of these software packages, we carry out an experimental mathematics study of some properties of zonal polynomials. Moreover, we derive and prove closed forms for several infinite families of zonal polynomial coefficients.
Pattern Hopf algebras

This is a study on pattern Hopf algebras in combinatorial structures. We introduce the notion of combinatorial presheaf, by adapting the algebraic framework of species to the study of substructures in combinatorics. Afterwards, we consider functions that count the number of patterns of objects and endow the linear span of these functions with a product and a coproduct. In this way, any well behaved family of combinatorial objects that admits a notion of substructure generates a Hopf algebra, and this association is functorial. For example, the Hopf algebra on permutations studied by Vargas in 2014 and the Hopf algebra on symmetric functions are particular cases of this construction. A specific family of pattern Hopf algebras is of interest, the ones arising from commutative combinatorial presheaves. This includes the presheaves on graphs, posets and generalized permutahedra. Here, we show that all the pattern Hopf algebras corresponding to commutative presheaves are free. We also study a non-commutative presheaf on marked permutations, i.e. permutations with a marked element. These objects have an inherent product called inflation, which is an operation motivated by factorization theorems of permutations. In this paper we find new factorization theorems on marked permutations, and use them to show that this is another example of a pattern Hopf algebra that is free.

In their 2011 paper on the AGT conjecture, Alba, Fateev, Litvinov and Tarnopolsky (AFLT) obtained a closed-form evaluation for a Selberg integral over the product of two Jack polynomials, thereby unifying the well-known Kadell and Hua--Kadell integrals. In this paper we use a variety of symmetric functions and symmetric function techniques to prove generalisations of the AFLT integral. These include (i) an $\mathrm{A}_n$ analogue of the AFLT integral, containing two Jack polynomials in the integrand; (ii) a generalisation of (i) for $γ=1$ (the Schur or GUE case), containing a product of $n+1$ Schur functions; (iii) an elliptic generalisation of the AFLT integral in which the role of the Jack polynomials is played by a pair of elliptic interpolation functions; (iv) an AFLT integral for Macdonald polynomials.

We propose periodic Macdonald processes as a $(q,t)$-deformation of periodic Schur processes and a periodic analogue of Macdonald processes. It is known that, in the theory of stochastic processes related to a family of symmetric functions, the Cauchy-like identity gives an explicit expression of a partition function. We compute the partition functions of periodic Macdonald processes relying on the free field realization of the Macdonald theory. We also study several families of observables for periodic Macdonald processes and give formulas of their moments. The technical tool is the free field realization of operators that are diagonalized by the Macdonald symmetric functions, where the operators admit expressions by means of vertex operators. We show that, when we adopt Plancherel specializations, the corresponding periodic Macdonald process is related to a Young diagram-valued periodic continuous process. It is known that, for periodic Schur processes, determinantal formulas are only available when we extend them to take into account the charge. We also consider this kind of shift-mixed periodic Macdonald processes and discuss their Schur-limit.

We employ the fact certain divided differences can be written as weighted means of B-splines and hence are positive. These divided differences include the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials of even degree $2p$, the positivity of which is a classical result by D. B. Hunter. We extend Hunter's result to complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials of fractional degree, which are defined via Jacobi's bialternant formula. We show in particular that these polynomials have positive real part for real degrees $μ$ with $|μ-2p|< 1/2$. We also prove a positivity criterion for linear combinations of the classical complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials and a sufficient criterion for the positivity of linear combinations of products of such polynomials.

We prove several general formulas for the distributions of various permutation statistics over any set of permutations whose quasisymmetric generating function is a symmetric function. Our formulas involve certain kinds of plethystic substitutions on quasisymmetric generating functions, and the permutation statistics we consider include the descent number, peak number, left peak number, and the number of up-down runs. We apply these results to cyclic permutations, involutions, and derangements, and more generally, to derive formulas for counting all permutations by the above statistics jointly with the number of fixed points and jointly with cycle type. A number of known formulas are recovered as special cases of our results, including formulas of Désarménien-Foata, Gessel-Reutenauer, Stembridge, Fulman, Petersen, Diaconis-Fulman-Holmes, Zhuang, and Athanasiadis.

We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.

Given a symmetric polynomial $P$ in $2n$ variables, there exists a unique symmetric polynomial $Q$ in $n$ variables such that \[ P(x_1,\ldots,x_n,x_1^{-1},\ldots,x_n^{-1}) =Q(x_1+x_1^{-1},\ldots,x_n+x_n^{-1}). \] We denote this polynomial $Q$ by $Φ_n(P)$ and show that $Φ_n$ is an epimorphism of algebras. We compute $Φ_n(P)$ for several families of symmetric polynomials $P$: symplectic and orthogonal Schur polynomials, elementary symmetric polynomials, complete homogeneous polynomials, and power sums. Some of these formulas were already found by Elouafi (2014) and Lachaud (2016).
The polynomials of the form $Φ_n(\operatorname{s}_{λ/μ}^{(2n)})$, where $\operatorname{s}_{λ/μ}^{(2n)}$ is a skew Schur polynomial in $2n$ variables, arise naturally in the study of the minors of symmetric banded Toeplitz matrices, when the generating symbol is a palindromic Laurent polynomial, and its roots can be written as $x_1,\ldots,x_n,x^{-1}_1,\ldots,x^{-1}_n$. Trench (1987) and Elouafi (2014) found efficient formulas for the determinants of symmetric banded Toeplitz matrices. We show that these formulas are equivalent to the result of Ciucu and Krattenthaler (2009) about the factorization of the characters of classical groups.

Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices with $q$-Laplacian $L_T^q$ and Laplacian matrix $L_T$. Let $GTS_n$ be the generalized tree shift poset on the set of unlabelled trees on $n$ vertices. Inequalities are known between coefficients of the immanantal polynomial of $L_T$ (and $L_T^q$) as we go up the poset $GTS_n$. Using the Frobenius characteristic, this can be thought as a result involving the schur symmetric function $s_λ$. In this paper, we use an arbitrary symmetric function to define a {\it generalized matrix function} of an $n \times n$ matrix. When the symmetric function is the monomial and the forgotten symmetric function, we generalize such inequalities among coefficients of the generalized matrix polynomial of $L_T^q$ as we go up the $GTS_n$ poset.

In this paper, we investigate the strength of chromatic symmetric homology as a graph invariant. Chromatic symmetric homology is a lift of the chromatic symmetric function for graphs to a homological setting, and its Frobenius characteristic is a q,t generalization of the chromatic symmetric function. We exhibit three pairs of graphs where each pair has the same chromatic symmetric function but distinct homology. We also show that integral chromatic symmetric homology contains torsion, and based on computations, conjecture that Z_2-torsion in bigrading (1,0) detects nonplanarity in the graph.

By combining the Gessel--Xin method with plethystic substitutions, we obtain a recursion for a symmetric function generalization of the $q$-Dyson constant term identity also known as the Zeilberger--Bressoud $q$-Dyson theorem. This yields a constant term identity which generalizes the non-zero part of Kadell's orthogonality ex-conjecture and a result of Károlyi, Lascoux and Warnaar.
Bases for Quotients of Symmetric Polynomials
We create several families of bases for the symmetric polynomials. From these bases we prove that certain Schur symmetric polynomials form a basis for quotients of symmetric polynomials that generalize the cohomology and the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. Our work also provides an alternative proof of a result due to Grinberg.

We introduce and study affine analogues of the fixed-point-free (FPF) involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski. Our methods use the theory of quasiparabolic sets introduced by Rains and Vazirani, and we prove that the subset of FPF-involutions is a quasiparabolic set for the affine symmetric group under conjugation. Using properties of quasiparabolic sets, we prove a transition formula for the affine FPF involution Stanley symmetric functions, analogous to Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials. Our results suggest several conjectures and open problems.

For numerical semigroups with a specified list of (not necessarily minimal) generators, we obtain explicit asymptotic expressions, and in some cases quasipolynomial/quasirational representations, for all major factorization length statistics. This involves a variety of tools that are not standard in the subject, such as algebraic combinatorics (Schur polynomials), probability theory (weak convergence of measures, characteristic functions), and harmonic analysis (Fourier transforms of distributions). We provide instructive examples which demonstrate the power and generality of our techniques. We also highlight unexpected consequences in the theory of homogeneous symmetric functions.
