Question about integral of product of four Hermite polynomials integrated with squared weight
We found that the integral of four Hermite polynomials integrated with squared weight over the real line generates symmetric polynomials with a beautiful recursive property. We pose a question whether that integral admit an explicit formula or not. The question has a certain interpretation in terms of Hermitian matrices.

Random plane partitions and corner distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore some probabilistic applications arising in connections with $K$-theoretic symmetric functions. For instance, we determine certain corner distributions of random lozenge tilings and plane partitions. We also introduce some distributions that are naturally related to the corner growth model. Our main tools are dual symmetric Grothendieck polynomials and normalized Schur functions.

A Deletion-Contraction Relation for the Chromatic Symmetric Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the definition of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ to include graphs $G$ with a vertex-weight function $w : V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$. We show how this provides the chromatic symmetric function with a natural deletion-contraction relation analogous to that of the chromatic polynomial. Using this relation we derive new properties of the chromatic symmetric function, and we give alternate proofs of many fundamental properties of $X_G$.
Acyclic orientation polynomials and the sink theorem for chromatic symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the acyclic orientation polynomial of a graph to be the generating function for the sinks of its acyclic orientations. Stanley proved that the number of acyclic orientations is equal to the chromatic polynomial evaluated at $-1$ up to sign. Motivated by this link between acyclic orientations and the chromatic polynomial, we develop "acyclic orientation" analogues of theorems concerning the chromatic polynomial of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Greene-Zaslavsky. As an application, we provide a new proof for Stanley's sink theorem for chromatic symmetric functions $X_G$. This theorem gives a relation between the number of acyclic orientations with a fixed number of sinks and the coefficients in the expansion of $X_G$ with respect to elementary symmetric functions.

A "right" path to cyclic polygons
It is well known that Heron's theorem provides an explicit formula for the area of a triangle, as a symmetric function of the lengths of its sides. It has been extended by Brahmagupta to quadrilaterals inscribed in a circle (cyclic quadrilaterals). A natural problem is trying to further generalize the result to cyclic polygons with a larger number of edges, which, surprisingly, has revealed to be far from simple. In this paper we investigate such a problem by following a new and elementary approach. We start from the simple observation that the incircle of a right triangle touches its hypothenuse in a point that splits it into two segments, the product of whose lengths equals the area of the triangle. From this curious fact we derive in a few lines: an unusual proof of the Pythagoras' theorem, Heron's theorem for right triangles, Heron's theorem for general triangles, and Brahmagupta's theorem for cyclic quadrangles. This suggests that cutting the edges of a cyclic polygon by means of suitable points should be the "right" working method. Indeed, following this idea, we obtain an explicit formula for the area of any convex cyclic polygon, as a symmetric function of the segments split on its edges by the incircles of a triangulation. We also show that such a symmetry can be rediscovered in Heron's and Brahmagupta's results, which consequently represent special cases of the general provided formula.

Positivity of chromatic symmetric functions associated with Hessenberg functions of bounce number 3
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a proof of Stanley-Stembridge conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions for the class of all unit interval graphs with independence number 3. That is, we show that the chromatic symmetric function of the incomparability graph of a unit interval order in which the length of a chain is at most 3 is positively expanded as a linear sum of elementary symmetric functions.
Macdonald Polynomials and level two Demazure modules for affine $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$
We define a family of symmetric polynomials $G_{ν,λ}(z_1,\cdots, z_{n+1},q)$ indexed by a pair of dominant integral weights. The polynomial $G_{ν,0}(z,q)$ is the specialized Macdonald polynomial and we prove that $G_{0,λ}(z,q)$ is the graded character of a level two Demazure module associated to the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{n+1}$. Under suitable conditions on $(ν,λ)$ (which includes the case when $ν=0$ or $λ=0$) we prove that $G_{ν,λ}(z,q)$ is Schur positive and give explicit formulae for them in terms of Macdonald polynomials.

A basis for a quotient of symmetric polynomials
Consider the ring $\mathcal{S}$ of symmetric polynomials in $k$ variables over an arbitrary base ring $\mathbf{k}$. Fix $k$ scalars $a_{1},a_{2},\ldots,a_{k}\in\mathbf{k}$. Let $I$ be the ideal of $\mathcal{S}$ generated by $h_{n-k+1}-a_{1},h_{n-k+2}-a_{2},\ldots,h_{n}-a_{k}$, where $h_{i}$ is the $i$-th complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial. The quotient ring $\mathcal{S}/I$ generalizes both the usual and the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. We show that $\mathcal{S}/I$ has a $\mathbf{k}$-module basis consisting of (residue classes of) Schur polynomials fitting into an $\left( n-k\right) \times k$-rectangle; and that its multiplicative structure constants satisfy the same $S_3$-symmetry as those of the Grassmannian cohomology. We prove a Pieri rule and a "rim hook algorithm", and conjecture a positivity property generalizing that of Gromov-Witten invariants. We construct two further bases of $\mathcal{S}/I$ as well. We also study the quotient of the whole polynomial ring (not just the symmetric polynomials) by the ideal generated by the same $k$ polynomials as $I$.

Combinatorially refine a Zagier-Stanley result on products of permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics 343(8) (2020), Article 111912 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we enumerate the pairs of permutations that are long cycles and whose product has a given cycle-type. Our main result is a simple relation concerning the desired numbers for a few related cycle-types. The relation refines a formula of the number of pairs of long cycles whose product has $k$ cycles independently obtained by Zagier and Stanley relying on group characters, and was previously obtained by Féray and Vassilieva by counting some colored permutations first and then relying on some algebraic computations in the ring of symmetric functions. Our approach here is simpler and combinatorial.
Chromatic Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1995 Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$, whose $e$-positivity and Schur-positivity has been of large interest. In this paper we study the relative $e$-positivity and Schur-positivity between connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We define and investigate two families of posets on distinct chromatic symmetric functions. The relations depend on the $e$-positivity or Schur-positivity of a weighed subtraction between $X_G$ and $X_H$. We find a biconditional condition between $e$-positivity or Schur-positivity and the relation to the complete graph. This gives a new paradigm for $e$-positivity and for Schur-positivity. We show many other interesting properties of these posets including that trees form an independent set and are maximal elements. Additionally, we find that stars are independent elements, the independence number increases as we increase in the poset and that the family of lollipop graphs form a chain.

Two remarks on graph norms
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry (2021) • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $H$, its homomorphism density in graphs naturally extends to the space of two-variable symmetric functions $W$ in $L^p$, $p\geq e(H)$, denoted by $t(H,W)$. One may then define corresponding functionals $\|W\|_{H}:=|t(H,W)|^{1/e(H)}$ and $\|W\|_{r(H)}:=t(H,|W|)^{1/e(H)}$ and say that $H$ is (semi-)norming if $\|.\|_{H}$ is a (semi-)norm and that $H$ is weakly norming if $\|.\|_{r(H)}$ is a norm. We obtain two results that contribute to the theory of (weakly) norming graphs. Firstly, answering a question of Hatami, who estimated the modulus of convexity and smoothness of $\|.\|_{H}$, we prove that $\|.\|_{r(H)}$ is not uniformly convex nor uniformly smooth, provided that $H$ is weakly norming. Secondly, we prove that every graph $H$ without isolated vertices is (weakly) norming if and only if each component is an isomorphic copy of a (weakly) norming graph. This strong factorisation result allows us to assume connectivity of $H$ when studying graph norms. In particular, we correct an error in the original statement of the aforementioned theorem by Hatami.
Value distribution of elementary symmetric polynomials and its perturbations over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we establish the asymptotic behavior of generating functions related to the exponential sum over finite fields of elementary symmetric functions and their perturbations. This asymptotic behavior allows us to calculate the probability generating function of the probability that the the elementary symmetric polynomial of degree $k$ and its perturbations returns $β\in \mathbb{F}_q$ where $\mathbb{F}_q$ represents the field of $q$ elements. Our study extends many of the results known for perturbations over the binary field to any finite field. In particular, we establish when a particular perturbation is asymptotically balanced over a prime field and provide a construction to find such perturbations over any finite field.

An SOS counterexample to an inequality of symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that differences of symmetric functions corresponding to various bases are nonnegative on the nonnegative orthant exactly when the partitions defining them are comparable in dominance order. The only exception is the case of homogeneous symmetric functions where it is only known that dominance of the partitions implies nonnegativity of the corresponding difference of symmetric functions. It was conjectured by Cuttler, Greene, and Skandera in 2011 that the converse also holds, as in the cases of the monomial, elementary, power-sum, and Schur bases. In this paper we provide a counterexample, showing that homogeneous symmetric functions break the pattern. We use semidefinite programming to find an explicit sums of squares decomposition of the polynomial $H_{44} - H_{521}$ as a sum of 41 squares. This rational certificate of nonnegativity disproves the conjecture, since a polynomial which is a sum of squares cannot be negative, and since the partitions 44 and 521 are incomparable in dominance order.

Maximizing the Edelman-Greene statistic
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $\textit{Edelman-Greene statistic}$ of S. Billey-B. Pawlowski measures the "shortness" of the Schur expansion of a Stanley symmetric function. We show that the maximum value of this statistic on permutations of Coxeter length $n$ is the number of involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$, and explicitly describe the permutations that attain this maximum. Our proof confirms a recent conjecture of C. Monical, B. Pankow, and A. Yong: we give an explicit combinatorial injection between a certain collections of Edelman-Greene tableaux and standard Young tableaux.

Enumerating partial Latin rectangles
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27:2 (2020) #P2.47 • View PublicationBIB
This paper deals with distinct computational methods to enumerate the set $\mathrm{PLR}(r,s,n;m)$ of $r \times s$ partial Latin rectangles on $n$ symbols with $m$ non-empty cells. For fixed $r$, $s$, and $n$, we prove that the size of this set is a symmetric polynomial of degree $3m$, and we determine the leading terms (the monomials of degree $3m$ through $3m-9$) using inclusion-exclusion. For $m \leq 13$, exact formulas for these symmetric polynomials are determined using a chromatic polynomial method. Adapting Sade's method for enumerating Latin squares, we compute the exact size of $\mathrm{PLR}(r,s,n;m)$, for all $r \leq s \leq n \leq 7$, and all $r \leq s \leq 6$ when $n=8$. Using an algebraic geometry method together with Burnside's Lemma, we enumerate isomorphism, isotopism, and main classes when $r \leq s \leq n \leq 6$. Numerical results have been cross-checked where possible.

Chromatic symmetric function of graphs from Borcherds algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a Borcherds algebra with the associated graph $G$. We prove that the chromatic symmetric function of $G$ can be recovered from the Weyl denominator identity of $\mathfrak g$ and this gives a Lie theoretic proof of Stanley's expression for chromatic symmetric function in terms of power sum symmetric function. Also, this gives an expression for chromatic symmetric function of $G$ in terms of root multiplicities of $\lie g$. The absolute value of the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ is known as the chromatic discriminant of $G$. As an application of our main theorem, we prove that graphs with different chromatic discriminants are distinguished by their chromatic symmetric functions. Also, we find a connection between the Weyl denominators and the $G$-elementary symmetric functions. Using this connection, we give a Lie theoretic proof of non-negativity of coefficients of $G$-power sum symmetric functions.

On the cohomology of line bundles over certain flag schemes II

Over a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, let $Z$ be the incidence variety in $\mathbb{P}^d \times (\mathbb{P}^d)^*$ and let $\mathcal{L}$ be the restriction to $Z$ of the line bundle $\mathcal{O}(-n-d) \boxtimes \mathcal{O}(n)$, where $n = p+f$ with $0 \leq f \leq p-2$. We prove that $H^d(Z,\mathcal{L})$ is the simple $\operatorname{GL}_{d+1}$-module corresponding to the partition $λ_0 = (p-1+f,p-1,f+1)$. When $f= 0$, using the first author's description of $H^d(Z,\mathcal{L})$ and Jantzen's sum formula, we obtain as a by-product that the sum of the monomial symmetric functions $m_λ$, for all partitions $λ$ of $2p-1$ less than $(p-1,p-1,1)$ in the dominance order, is the alternating sum of the Schur functions $S_{p-1,p-1-i,1^{i+1}}$ for $i=0,\dots,p-2$.

A Pieri rule for Demazure characters of the general linear group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Pieri rule is a nonnegative, multiplicity-free formula for the Schur function expansion of the product of an arbitrary Schur function with a single row Schur function. Key polynomials are characters of Demazure modules for the general linear group that generalize the Schur function basis of symmetric functions to a basis of the full polynomial ring. We prove a nonsymmetric generalization of the Pieri rule by giving a cancellation-free, multiplicity-free formula for the key polynomial expansion of the product of an arbitrary key polynomial with a single part key polynomial. Our proof is combinatorial, generalizing the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth insertion algorithm on tableaux to an insertion algorithm on Kohnert diagrams.
New Invariants for Permutations, Orders and Graphs

We study the symmetric function and polynomial combinatorial invariants of Hopf algebras of permutations, posets and graphs. We investigate their properties and the relations among them. In particular, we show that the chromatic symmetric function and many other invariants have a property we call positively $h$-alternating. This property of positively $h$-alternating leads to Schur positivity and $e$-positivity when applying the operator $\nabla$ at $q=1$. We conclude by showing that the invariants we consider can be expressed as scheduling problems.
Positivity Certificates via Integral Representations

Complete monotonicity is a strong positivity property for real-valued functions on convex cones. It is certified by the kernel of the inverse Laplace transform. We study this for negative powers of hyperbolic polynomials. Here the certificate is the Riesz kernel in Garding's integral representation. The Riesz kernel is a hypergeometric function in the coefficients of the given polynomial. For monomials in linear forms, it is a Gel'fand-Aomoto hypergeometric function, related to volumes of polytopes. We establish complete monotonicity for sufficiently negative powers of elementary symmetric functions. We also show that small negative powers of these polynomials are not completely monotone, proving one direction of a conjecture by Scott and Sokal.
