q-Stirling numbers in type B
Stirling numbers, which count partitions of a set and permutations in the symmetric group, have found extensive application in combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. We study analogues and q-analogues of these numbers corresponding to the Coxeter group of type B. In particular, we show how they are related to complete homogeneous and elementary symmetric polynomials; demonstrate how they q-count signed partitions and permutations; compute their ordinary, exponential, and q-exponential generating functions; and prove various identities about them. Ordered analogues of the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind have recently appeared in conjectures of Zabrocki and of Swanson--Wallach concerning the Hilbert series of certain super coinvariant algebras. We provide conjectural bases for these algebras and show that they have the correct Hilbert series.
Crystal invariant theory II: Pseudo-energies
The geometric crystal operators and geometric $R$-matrices (or geometric Weyl group actions) give commuting actions on the field of rational functions in $mn$ variables. We study the invariants of various combinations of these actions, which we view as "crystal analogues" of the invariants of $S_m$, ${\rm SL}_m$, $S_n \times S_m$, ${\rm SL}_n \times \, S_m$, and ${\rm SL}_n \times {\rm SL}_m$ acting on the polynomial ring in an $m \times n$ matrix of variables. The polynomial invariants of the $S_m$-action generated by the ${\rm GL}_m$-geometric $R$-matrices were described by Lam and the third-named author as the ring of loop symmetric functions. In a previous paper of the authors, the polynomial invariants of the ${\rm GL}_m$-geometric crystal operators were described as a subring of the ring of loop symmetric functions. In this paper, we give conjectural generating sets for the fields of rational invariants in the remaining cases, and we give formulas expressing a large class of loop symmetric functions in terms of these conjectural generators. Our results include new positive formulas for the central charge and energy function of a product of single-row geometric crystals, and a new derivation of Kirillov and Berenstein's piecewise-linear formula for cocharge. The formulas manifest the symmetries possessed by these functions.

Haglund's positivity conjecture for multiplicity one pairs
Haglund's conjecture states that $\dfrac{\langle J_λ(q,q^k),s_μ\rangle}{(1-q)^{|λ|}} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}[q]$ for all partitions $λ,μ$ and all non-negative integers $k$, where $J_λ$ is the integral form Macdonald symmetric function and $s_μ$ is the Schur function. This paper proves Haglund's conjecture in the cases when the pair $(λ,μ)$ satisfies $K_{λ,μ}=1$ or $K_{μ',λ'}=1$ where $K$ denotes the Kostka number. We also obtain some general results about the transition matrix between Macdonald symmetric functions and Schur functions.
On the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions in superspace
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study in detail the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions in superspace sNSym, introduced by Fishel, Lapointe and Pinto. We introduce a family of primitive elements of sNSym and extend the noncommutative elementary and power sum functions to superspace. Then, we give formulas relating these families of functions. Also, we introduce noncommutative Ribbon Schur functions in superspace and provide a explicit formula for their product. We show that the dual basis of these function is given by a family of the so--called fundamental quasisymmetric functions in superspace. This allows us to obtain a explicit formula for the coproduct of fundamental quasisymmetric functions in superspace. Additionally, by projecting the noncommutative Ribbon Schur functions in superspace, we define a new basis for the algebra of symmetric functions in superspace. On the other hand, we also show that sNSym can be realised as a Hopf algebra of trees.

Quasisymmetric Schubert calculus
The ring of symmetric functions occupies a central place in algebraic combinatorics, with a particularly notable role in Schubert calculus, where the standard cell decompositions of Grassmannians yield the celebrated family of Schur functions and the cohomology ring is governed by Littlewood-Richardson rules. The past 50 years have seen an analogous development of quasisymmetric function theory, with applications to enumerative combinatorics, Hopf algebras, graph theory, representation theory, and other areas. Despite such successes, this theory has lacked a quasisymmetric analogue of Schubert calculus. In particular, there has been much interest, since work of Lam and Pylyavskyy (2007), in developing "$K$-theoretic" analogues of quasisymmetric function theory, for which a major obstacle has been the lack of topological interpretations. Here, building on work of Baker and Richter (2008), we apply the philosophy of Schubert calculus to the loop space $Ω(Σ(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty))$ through the homotopy model given by James reduced product $J(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty)$. We describe a canonical Schubert cell decomposition of $J(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty)$, yielding a canonical basis of its cohomology, which we explicitly identify with monomial quasisymmetric functions. Our constructions apply equally to James reduced products of generalized flag varieties $G/P$, and we show how Littlewood-Richardson rules for any $G/P$ lift to $H^*(J(G/P))$. If $J(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty)$ carried the structure of a normal projective algebraic variety, the structure sheaves of the cell closures would yield a "cellular $K$-theory" Schubert basis. We show this is impossible. Nonetheless, we introduce and study a more subtle $K$-theory Schubert basis. We characterize this $K$-theory ring and develop quasisymmetric representatives with an explicit combinatorial description.

Hopf monoids of set families
A \textit{grounded set family} on $I$ is a subset $F\subseteq2^I$ such that $\emptyset\in F$. We study a linearized Hopf monoid \textbf{SF} on grounded set families, with restriction and contraction inspired by the corresponding operations for antimatroids. Many known combinatorial species, including simplicial complexes and matroids, form Hopf submonoids of \textbf{SF}, although not always with the "standard" Hopf structure (for example, our contraction operation is not the usual contraction of matroids). We use the topological methods of Aguiar and Ardila to obtain a cancellation-free antipode formula for the Hopf submonoid of lattices of order ideals of finite posets. Furthermore, we prove that the Hopf algebra of lattices of order ideals of chain gangs extends the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, and that its character group extends the group of formal power series in one variable with constant term 1 under multiplication.

A Crystal Analysis of $P$-Arrays
Gasharov introduced the combinatorial objects known as $P$-arrays to prove $s$-positivity for the chromatic symmetric functions of incomparability graphs of (3+1)-free posets. We define a crystal, a directed colored graph with some additional axioms, on the set of $P$-arrays. The components of the crystal have $s$-positive characters, thereby refining the $s$-positivity theorems of Gasharov, as well as Shareshian and Wachs. The crystal hints at a possible generalization of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence applied to $P$-arrays.

Noncolliding Macdonald Walks with an Absorbing Wall
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 079, 21 pages • View PublicationBIB
The branching rule is one of the most fundamental properties of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. It expresses a Macdonald polynomial as a nonnegative linear combination of Macdonald polynomials with smaller number of variables. Taking a limit of the branching rule under the principal specialization when the number of variables goes to infinity, we obtain a Markov chain of $m$ noncolliding particles with negative drift and an absorbing wall at zero. The chain depends on the Macdonald parameters $(q,t)$ and may be viewed as a discrete deformation of the Dyson Brownian motion. The trajectory of the Markov chain is equivalent to a certain Gibbs ensemble of plane partitions with an arbitrary cascade front wall. In the Jack limit $t=q^{β/2}\to 1$ the absorbing wall disappears, and the Macdonald noncolliding walks turn into the $β$-noncolliding random walks studied by Huang [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2021 (2021), 5898-5942, arXiv:1708.07115]. Taking $q=0$ (Hall-Littlewood degeneration) and further sending $t\to 1$, we obtain a continuous time particle system on $\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}$ with inhomogeneous jump rates and absorbing wall at zero.

Representation theoretic interpretation and interpolation properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish new properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which are symmetric polynomials generalizing $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We show that these polynomials are defined in terms of a vertex model, whose weights come not from an $R$-matrix, as is often the case, but from other intertwining operators of $U'_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules. Using this construction, we are able to prove a Cauchy-type identity for inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in full generality. Moreover, we are able to characterize spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in terms of vanishing at certain points, and we find interpolation analogues of $q$-Whittaker and elementary symmetric polynomials.

Lattice paths and negatively indexed weight-dependent binomial coefficients
In 1992, Loeb considered a natural extension of the binomial coefficients to negative entries and gave a combinatorial interpretation in terms of hybrid sets. He showed that many of the fundamental properties of binomial coefficients continue to hold in this extended setting. Recently, Formichella and Straub showed that these results can be extended to the $q$-binomial coefficients with arbitrary integer values and extended the work of Loeb further by examining arithmetic properties of the $q$-binomial coefficients. In this paper, we give an alternative combinatorial interpretation in terms of lattice paths and consider an extension of the more general weight-dependent binomial coefficients, first defined by the second author, to arbitrary integer values. Remarkably, many of the results of Loeb, Formichella and Straub continue to hold in the general weighted setting. We also examine important special cases of the weight-dependent binomial coefficients, including ordinary, $q$- and elliptic binomial coefficients as well as elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions.

Principal Specialization of Monomial Symmetric Polynomials and Group Determinants of Cyclic Groups
In this paper, we consider the principal specialization of monomial symmetric polynomials and investigate the special values of these polynomials at the point $$ ζ_{(n,k)} := ( 1, ζ_n, ζ_n^2, \dots, ζ_n^{kn-1} ), $$ where \(ζ_n\) is a primitive \(n\)th root of unity. We give explicit formulas for several special values. Also, we show that these special values naturally appear as the coefficients in the expansion of the $k$th power of the circulant determinant of order $n$ (the group determinant of the cyclic group of order $n$). These results extend Ore's results for $k = 1$. Furthermore, we determine the number of terms in the $k$th power of the group permanent of the cyclic group of order $n$. This extends Brualdi and Newman's result for $k = 1$.

Closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions as $K$-homology Schubert representatives of the affine Grassmannian
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 11 (2024), 667-702 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Blasiak-Morse-Seelinger introduced symmetric functions called Katalan functions, and proved that the $K$-theoretic $k$-Schur functions due to Lam-Schilling-Shimozono form a subfamily of the Katalan functions. They conjectured that another subfamily of Katalan functions called the closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions are identified with the Schubert structure sheaves in the $K$-homology of the affine Grassmannian. The main result is a proof of the conjecture. We also study a $K$-theoretic Peterson isomorphism that Ikeda, Iwao, and Maeno constructed, in a non-geometric manner, based on the unipotent solution of the relativistic Toda lattice of Ruijsenaars. We prove that the map sends a Schubert class of the quantum $K$-theory ring of the flag variety to a closed $K$-$k$-Schur Katalan function up to an explicit factor related to a translation element with respect to an anti-dominant coroot. In fact, we prove the above map coincides with a map whose existence was conjectured by Lam, Li, Mihalcea, Shimozono, and proved by Kato, and more recently by Chow and Leung.

Graph coloring-related properties of (generating functions of) Hodge-Deligne polynomials
Motivated by a connection between the topology of (generalized) configuration spaces and chromatic polynomials, we show that generating functions of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of quasiprojective varieties and colorings of acyclic directed graphs with the complete graph $K_n$ as the underlying undirected graph. In order to do this, we combine an interpretation of Crew-Spirkl for plethysms involving chromatic symmetric polynomials using colorings of directed acyclic graphs to plethystic exponentials often appearing Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties. Applying this to a recent result of Florentino-Nozad-Zamora, we find a connection between $GL_n$-character varieties of finitely presented groups and colorings of these "complete" directed graphs by (signed) variables used in the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of the irreducible representations. As a consequence of the constructions used, generators of Hodge-Deligne polynomials carry over to generators of the plethystic exponentials as a power series in a way that is compatible with this graph coloring interpretation and gives interesting combinatorial information that simplifies when we consider Hodge-Deligne polynomials of birationally equivalent varieties to be equivalent. Finally, we give an application of methods used to symmetries of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties and their configuration spaces and their relation to chromatic symmetric polynomials.

Delta and Theta Operator Expansions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary symmetric function expansion for $MΔ_{m_γe_1}Πe_λ^{\ast}$ and $MΔ_{m_γe_1}Πs_λ^{\ast}$ when $t=1$ in terms of what we call $γ$-parking functions and lattice $γ$-parking functions. Here, $Δ_F$ and $Π$ are certain eigenoperators of the modified Macdonald basis and $M=(1-q)(1-t)$. Our main results in turn give an elementary basis expansion at $t=1$ for symmetric functions of the form $M Δ_{Fe_1} Θ_{G} J$ whenever $F$ is expanded in terms of monomials, $G$ is expanded in terms of the elementary basis, and $J$ is expanded in terms of the modified elementary basis $\{Πe_λ^\ast\}_λ$. Even the most special cases of this general Delta and Theta operator expression are significant; we highlight a few of these special cases. We end by giving an $e$-positivity conjecture for when $t$ is not specialized, proposing that our objects can also give the elementary basis expansion in the unspecialized symmetric function.

Partitions, Multiple Zeta Values and the q-bracket
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a framework for relating certain q-series defined by sums over partitions to multiple zeta values. In particular, we introduce a space of polynomial functions on partitions for which the associated q-series are q-analogues of multiple zeta values. By explicitly describing the (regularized) multiple zeta values one obtains as $q\to 1$, we extend previous results known in this area. Using this together with the fact that other families of functions on partitions, such as shifted symmetric functions, are elements in our space will then give relations among (q-analogues of) multiple zeta values. Conversely, we will show that relations among multiple zeta values can be `lifted' to the world of functions on partitions, which provides new examples of functions where the associated q-series are quasimodular.
Splitting the square of homogeneous and elementary functions into their symmetric and anti-symmetric parts
We consider the expansion of the square of a complete homogeneous function $h_λ$, or of an elementary symmetric function $e_λ$, in the basis of Schur functions. This square also decomposes into two plethysms, $s_2[h_λ]$ and $s_{11}[h_λ]$ (resp. $s_2[h_λ]$ and $s_{11}[h_λ]$), which are called its symmetric and anti-symmetric parts, respectively. We define a sign statistic on the set of tableaux that index the Schur functions appearing in the square of those symmetric functions. This sign statistic allows to determine to which plethysm each Schur function contributes. We use mainly combinatorial tools on tableaux (product on tableau and RSK) and basic manipulations on plethysm and symmetric functions.

Symmetric functions and a natural framework for combinatorial and number theoretic sequences
Certain triples of power series, considered by I. Macdonald, give a natural framework for many combinatorial and number theoretic sequences, such as the Stirling, Bernoulli and harmonic numbers and partitions of different kinds. The power series in such a triple are closely linked by identities coming from the theory of symmetric functions. We extend the work of Z-H. Sun, who developed similar ideas, and Macdonald, revealing more of the structure of these triples. De Moivre polynomials play a key role in this study.

New approaches to $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ weight system
Published • View PublicationBIB
The present paper has been motivated by an aspiration for understanding the weight system corresponding to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The straightforward approach to computing the values of a Lie algebra weight system on a general chord diagram amounts to elaborating calculations in the noncommutative universal enveloping algebra, in spite of the fact that the result belongs to the center of the latter. The first approach is based on a suggestion due to M. Kazarian to define an invariant of permutations taking values in the center of the universal enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The restriction of this invariant to involutions without fixed points (such an involution determines a chord diagram) coincides with the value of the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ -weight system on this chord diagram. We describe the recursion allowing one to compute the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ -invariant of permutations and demonstrate how it works in a number of examples. The second approach is based on the Harish-Chandra isomorphism for the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. This isomorphism identifies the center of the universal enveloping algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ with the ring $Λ^*(N)$ of shifted symmetric polynomials in $N$ variables. The Harish-Chandra projection can be applied separately for each monomial in the defining polynomial of the weight system; as a result, the main body of computations can be done in a commutative algebra, rather than noncommutative one.
