Chromatic quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative $P$-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a natural unit interval order $P$, we describe proper colorings of the incomparability graph of $P$ in the language of heaps. We also introduce a combinatorial operation, called a \emph{local flip}, on the heaps. This operation defines an equivalence relation on the proper colorings, and the equivalence relation refines the ascent statistic introduced by Shareshian and Wachs. In addition, we define an analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions introduced by Fomin and Greene, with respect to $P$. We establish a duality between the chromatic quasisymmetric function of $P$ and these noncommutative symmetric functions. This duality leads us to positive expansions of the chromatic quasisymmetric functions into several symmetric function bases. In particular, we present some partial results for the $e$-positivity conjecture.
The mystery of plethysm coefficients
Published in Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics (PSPUM) 110 (2024), 275-292 • View PublicationBIB
Composing two representations of the general linear groups gives rise to Littlewood's (outer) plethysm. On the level of characters, this poses the question of finding the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. A combinatorial interpretation for the Schur expansion coefficients of the plethysm of two Schur functions is, in general, still an open problem. We identify a proof technique of combinatorial representation theory, which we call the "$s$-perp trick", and point out several examples in the literature where this idea is used. We use the $s$-perp trick to give algorithms for computing monomial and Schur expansions of symmetric functions. In several special cases, these algorithms are more efficient than those currently implemented in {\sc SageMath}.

Skew Symplectic and Orthogonal Schur Functions
Published in SIGMA 20 (2024), 041, 23 pages • View PublicationBIB
Using the vertex operator representations for symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we define two families of symmetric functions and show thatthey are the skew symplectic and skew orthogonal Schur polynomials defined implicitly by Koike and Terada and satisfy the general branching rules. Furthermore, we derive the Jacobi-Trudi identities and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns for these symmetric functions. Additionally, the vertex operator method yields their Cauchy-type identities. This demonstrates that vertex operator representations serve not only as a tool for studying symmetric functions but also offers unified realizations for skew Schur functions of types A, C, and D.

Down-up algebras and chromatic symmetric functions
We establish Guay-Paquet's unpublished linear relation between certain chromatic symmetric functions by relating his algebra on paths to the $q$-Klyachko algebra. The coefficients in this relations are $q$-hit polynomials, and they come up naturally in our setup as connected remixed Eulerian numbers, in contrast to the computational approach of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova. As Guay-Paquet's algebra is a down-up algebra, we are able to harness algebraic results in the context of the latter and establish results of a combinatorial flavour. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova on chromatic symmetric functions. This concerns the abelian case of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, which we briefly survey.

Quantum K theory of Grassmannians, Wilson line operators, and Schur bundles
Published in Forum of Math. Sigma 13 (2025) e140 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a `Whitney' presentation, and a `Coulomb branch' presentation, for the torus equivariant quantum K theory of the Grassmann manifold $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, inspired from physics, and stated in an earlier paper. The first presentation is obtained by quantum deforming the product of the Hirzebruch $λ_y$ classes of the tautological bundles. In physics, the $λ_y$ classes arise as certain Wilson line operators. The second presentation is obtained from the Coulomb branch equations involving the partial derivatives of a twisted superpotential from supersymmetric gauge theory. This is closest to a presentation obtained by Gorbounov and Korff, utilizing integrable systems techniques. Algebraically, we relate the Coulomb and Whitney presentations utilizing transition matrices from the (equivariant) Grothendieck polynomials to the (equivariant) complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials. Along the way, we calculate K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of wedge powers of the tautological bundles on $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, using the `quantum=classical' statement.

q-Whittaker functions, finite fields, and Jordan forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $q$-Whittaker function $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ associated to a partition $λ$ is a $q$-analogue of the Schur function $s_λ(\mathbf{x})$, and is defined as the $t=0$ specialization of the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. We show combinatorially how to expand $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ in terms of partial flags compatible with a nilpotent endomorphism over the finite field of size $1/q$. This yields an expression analogous to a well-known formula for the Hall-Littlewood functions. We show that considering pairs of partial flags and taking Jordan forms leads to a probabilistic bijection between nonnegative-integer matrices and pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape, proving the Cauchy identity for $q$-Whittaker functions. We call our probabilistic bijection the $q$-Burge correspondence, and prove that in the limit as $q\to 0$, we recover a description of the classical Burge correspondence (also known as column RSK) due to Rosso (2012). A key step in the proof is the enumeration of an arbitrary double coset of $\text{GL}_n$ modulo two parabolic subgroups, which we find to be of independent interest. As an application, we use the $q$-Burge correspondence to count isomorphism classes of certain modules over the preprojective algebra of a type $A$ quiver (i.e. a path), refined according to their socle filtrations. This develops a connection between the combinatorics of symmetric functions and the representation theory of preprojective algebras.

Categorifications of ${\textsf {QSym}}$ using supercharacter theories and a new basis for ${\textsf {NSym}}_{\mathbb{C}(q,t)}$
Let us fix a positive integer $ν>1$. For each positive integer $n>1$, we consider a normal supercharacter theory $\mathcal{S}_n$ of $G_n$, where $G_n$ is the direct-product of $n-1$ copies of the cyclic group of order $ν$. Then we endow $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} \textsf{scf}(\mathcal{S}_n)$, the direct-product of supercharacter function spaces, with the Hopf algebra structure that is isomorphic to the Hopf algebra $\textsf{QSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions. Furthermore, we compute the structure constants of the Hopf algebra thus obtained for the basis consisting of superclass identifier functions. Using our categorifications, we study a new basis for the Hopf algebra $\textsf{NSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q,t)}$ of noncommutative symmetric functions over the rational function field $\mathbb{C}(q,t)$ in commuting variables $q$ and $t$, with an emphasis on the structure constants of $\textsf{NSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q,t)}$ for this basis. Some interesting applications are also obtained via the specializations of $q$ and $t$.

The symmetric function theorem via the Faà di Bruno formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric function theorem states that a polynomial that is invariant under permutation of variables, is a polynomial in the elementary symmetric polynomials. We deduce this classical result, in the analytic setting, from the multivariate Faà di Bruno formula. In two variables, this allows us to completely determine all coefficients that occur in the inductive equations.

Higher Degree Erdos-Ginzburg-Ziv Constants
We generalize the notion of Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants -- along the same lines we generalized in earlier work the notion of Davenport constants -- to a ``higher degree" and obtain various lower and upper bounds. These bounds are sometimes exact as is the case for certain finite commutative rings of prime power cardinality. We also consider to what extent a theorem due independently to W.D.~Gao and the first author that relates these two parameters extends to this higher degree setting. Two simple examples that capture the essence of these higher degree Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants are the following. 1) Let $ν_p(m)$ denote the $p-$adic valuation of the integer $m$. Suppose we have integers $t | {m \choose 2}$ and $n=t+2^{ν_2(m)}$, then every sequence $S$ over ${\mathbb Z}_2$ of length $|S| \geq n$ contains a subsequence $S'$ of length $t$ for which $\sum_{a_{i_1},\ldots, a_{i_m} \in S'} a_{i_1}\cdots a_{i_m} \equiv 0 \pmod{2}$, and this is sharp. 2) Suppose $k=3^α$ for some integer $α\geq 2$. Then every sequence $S$ over ${\mathbb Z}_3$ of length $|S| \geq k+6$ contains a subsequence $S'$ of length $k$ for which $\sum_{a_h, a_i, a_j \in S'} a_ha_ia_j \equiv 0 \pmod{3}$. These examples illustrate that if a sequence of elements from a finite commutative ring is long enough, certain symmetric expressions (symmetric polynomials) have to vanish on the elements of a subsequence of prescribed length. The Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem is just the case where a sequence of length $2n-1$ over ${\mathbb Z}_n$ contains a subsequence $S'=(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$ of length $n$ that vanishes when substituted in the linear symmetric polynomial $a_1+\cdots+a_n.$

A combinatorial interpretation of the noncommutative inverse Kostka matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a combinatorial formula for the expansion of immaculate noncommutative symmetric functions into complete homogeneous noncommutative symmetric functions. To do this, we introduce generalizations of Ferrers diagrams which we call GBPR diagrams. We define tunnel hooks, which play a role similar to that of the special rim hooks appearing in the Eğecioğlu-Remmel formula for the symmetric inverse Kostka matrix. We extend this interpretation to skew shapes and fully generalize to define immaculate functions indexed by integer sequences skewed by integer sequences. Finally, as an application of our combinatorial formula, we extend Campbell's results on ribbon decompositions of immaculate functions to a larger class of shapes.

Polysymmetric functions and motivic measures of configuration spaces

On Signed Multiplicities of Schur Expansions Surrounding Petrie Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $k\ge 1$, the homogeneous symmetric functions $G(k,m)$ of degree $m$ defined by $\sum_{m\ge 0} G(k,m) z^m=\prod_{i\ge 1} \big(1+x_iz+x^2_iz^2+\cdots+x^{k-1}_iz^{k-1}\big)$ are called \emph{Petrie symmetric functions}. As derived by Grinberg and Fu--Mei independently, the expansion of $G(k,m)$ in the basis of Schur functions $s_λ$ turns out to be signed multiplicity free, i.e., the coefficients are $-1$, $0$ and $1$. In this paper we give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient of $s_λ$ in terms of the $k$-core of $λ$ and a sequence of rim hooks of size $k$ removed from $λ$. We further study the product of $G(k,m)$ with a power sum symmetric function $p_n$. For all $n\ge 1$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameters $k$ and $m$ in order for the expansion of $G(k,m)\cdot p_n$ in the basis of Schur functions to be signed multiplicity free. This settles affirmatively a conjecture of Alexandersson as the special case $n=2$.

Some consequences of the valley Delta conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In (Haglund, Remmel, Wilson 2018) Haglund, Remmel and Wilson introduced their Delta conjectures, which give two different combinatorial interpretations of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{n-k-1}} e_n$ in terms of rise-decorated or valley-decorated labelled Dyck paths respectively. While the rise version has been recently proved (D'Adderio, Mellit 2021; Blasiak, Haiman, Morse, Pun, Seelinger preprint 2021), not much is known about the valley version. In this work we prove the Schröder case of the valley Delta conjecture, the Schröder case of its square version (Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2021), and the Catalan case of its extended version (Qiu, Wilson 2020). Furthermore, assuming the symmetry of (a refinement of) the combinatorial side of the extended valley Delta conjecture, we deduce also the Catalan case of its square version (Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2021).

Invariant Theory for the free left-regular band and a q-analogue
Published in Pacific J. Math. 322 (2023) 251-280 • View PublicationBIB
We examine from an invariant theory viewpoint the monoid algebras for two monoids having large symmetry groups. The first monoid is the free left-regular band on $n$ letters, defined on the set of all injective words, that is, the words with at most one occurrence of each letter. This monoid carries the action of the symmetric group. The second monoid is one of its $q$-analogues, considered by K. Brown, carrying an action of the finite general linear group. In both cases, we show that the invariant subalgebras are semisimple commutative algebras, and characterize them using Stirling and $q$-Stirling numbers. We then use results from the theory of random walks and random-to-top shuffling to decompose the entire monoid algebra into irreducibles, simultaneously as a module over the invariant ring and as a group representation. Our irreducible decompositions are described in terms of derangement symmetric functions introduced by Désarménien and Wachs.

Characters of local and regular permutation statistics
The goal of this monograph is to study the indicator function for a set of permutations mapping one finite sequence of positive integers to another from a representation theoretic, combinatorial and probabilistic perspective. The degree of a function of permutations is the size of the largest pair of sequences required when expressing it as a linear combination of these indicators. This notion of degree, implicit in work of Diaconis, is critical for many applications of representation theory to extremal combinatorics, machine learning, probability and statistics. We use the term local to indicate bounded degree and initiate the study of low degree class functions, which encode probabilistic data for permutation statistics on each cycle type simultaneously. We begin with a self contained treatment of for functions of permutations, developing its theory using language familiar to enumerative and algebraic combinatorialists. This leads naturally to a novel basis for symmetric functions we call the path power sum symmetric functions. The most technically challenging part of our work is the path Murnaghan-Nakayama formula, which expands path power sums into Schur functions. By combining the the path Murnaghan-Nakayam formula with the classical theory of character polynomials, one obtains a structural characterization for moments for permutation statistics conditioning on cycle type. We then analyze asymptotic properties of these moments. In doing so, we introduce the novel family of regular permutation statistics, which include almost all reasonable weighted pattern counting statistics. We show a large family of regular statistics satisfy a law of large numbers on a given cycle type depending only on the proportion of fixed points and a have variances depending only on fixed points and two cycles.

A rooted variant of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Richard Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ and asked whether there are non-isomorphic trees $T$ and $U$ with $X_T=X_U$. We study variants of the chromatic symmetric function for rooted graphs, where we require the root vertex to either use or avoid a specified color. We present combinatorial identities and recursions satisfied by these rooted chromatic polynomials, explain their relation to pointed chromatic functions and rooted $U$-polynomials, and prove three main theorems. First, for all non-empty connected graphs $G$, Stanley's polynomial $X_G(x_1,\ldots,x_N)$ is irreducible in $\mathbb{Q}[x_1,\ldots,x_N]$ for all large enough $N$. The same result holds for our rooted variant where the root node must avoid a specified color. We prove irreducibility by a novel combinatorial application of Eisenstein's Criterion. Second, we prove the rooted version of Stanley's Conjecture: two rooted trees are isomorphic as rooted graphs if and only if their rooted chromatic polynomials are equal. In fact, we prove that a one-variable specialization of the rooted chromatic polynomial (obtained by setting $x_0=x_1=q$, $x_2=x_3=1$, and $x_n=0$ for $n>3$) already distinguishes rooted trees. Third, we answer a question of Pawlowski by providing a combinatorial interpretation of the monomial expansion of pointed chromatic functions.

$m$-Symmetric functions, non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and positivity conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the space, $R_m$, of $m$-symmetric functions consisting of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},x_{m+3},\dots$ but have no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$. We obtain $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials by $t$-symmetrizing non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, and show that they form a basis of $R_m$. We define $m$-symmetric Schur functions through a somewhat complicated process involving their dual basis, tableaux combinatorics, and the Hecke algebra generators, and then prove some of their most elementary properties. We conjecture that the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials (suitably normalized and plethystically modified) expand positively in terms of $m$-symmetric Schur functions. We obtain relations on the $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$ in the $m$-symmetric world, and show in particular that the usual $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients are special cases of the $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$'s. Finally, we show that when $m$ is large, the positivity conjecture, modulo a certain subspace, becomes a positivity conjecture on the expansion of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials in terms of non-symmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

Unicellular LLT polynomials and twin of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The solution of Shareshian-Wachs conjecture by Brosnan-Chow linked together the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and graded chromatic symmetric functions on unit interval graphs. On the other hand, it is known that unicellular LLT polynomials have similar properties to graded chromatic symmetric functions. In this paper, we link together the unicellular LLT polynomials and twin of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties introduced by Ayzenberg-Buchstaber. We prove their palindromicity from topological viewpoint. We also show that modules of a symmetric group generated by faces of a permutohedron are related to a shifted unicellular LLT polynomial and observe the $e$-positivity of shifted unicellular LLT polynomials, which is established by Alexandersson-Sulzgruber in general, for path graphs and complete graphs through the cohomology of the twins.

A symmetric function lift of torus link homology
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $M$ and $N$ are positive integers and let $k = \gcd(M, N)$, $m = M/k$, and $n=N/k$. We define a symmetric function $L_{M,N}$ as a weighted sum over certain tuples of lattice paths. We show that $L_{M,N}$ satisfies a generalization of Mellit and Hogancamp's recursion for the triply-graded Khovanov--Rozansky homology of the $M,N$-torus link. As a corollary, we obtain the triply-graded Khovanov--Rozansky homology of the $M,N$-torus link as a specialization of $L_{M,N}$. We conjecture that $L_{M,N}$ is equal (up to a constant) to the elliptic Hall algebra operator $\mathbf{Q}_{m,n}$ composed $k$ times and applied to 1.

A geometric approach to characters of Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
To any element of a connected, simply connected, semisimple complex algebraic group G and a choice of an element of the corresponding Weyl group there is an associated Lusztig variety. When the element of G is regular semisimple, the corresponding variety carries an action of the Weyl group on its (equivariant) intersection cohomology. From this action, we recover the induced characters of an element of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In type A, we prove a more precise statement: that the Frobenius character of this action is precisely the symmetric function given by the characters of a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element. The main idea is to find celular decompositions of desingularizations of these varieties and apply the Brosnan-Chow palindromicity criterion for determining when the local invariant cycle map is an isomorphism. This recovers some results of Lusztig about character sheaves and gives a generalization of the Brosnan-Chow solution to the Sharesian-Wachs conjecture to non-codominant permutations, where singularities are involved. We also review the connections between Immanants, Hecke algebras, and Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of indifference graphs.
