Richard Stanley through a crystal lens and from a random angle
Published in in: The Mathematical Legacy of Richard P. Stanley, AMS 2016, edited by P. Hersh, T. Lam, P. Pylyavskyy, V. Reiner, pp. 287-299 • View PublicationBIB
We review Stanley's seminal work on the number of reduced words of the longest element of the symmetric group and his Stanley symmetric functions. We shed new light on this by giving a crystal theoretic interpretation in terms of decreasing factorizations of permutations. Whereas crystal operators on tableaux are coplactic operators, the crystal operators on decreasing factorization intertwine with the Edelman-Greene insertion. We also view this from a random perspective and study a Markov chain on reduced words of the longest element in a finite Coxeter group, in particular the symmetric group, and mention a generalization to a poset setting.
Some remarkable new Plethystic Operators in the Theory of Macdonald Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the 90's a collection of Plethystic operators were introduced in [3], [7] and [8] to solve some Representation Theoretical problems arising from the Theory of Macdonald polynomials. This collection was enriched in the research that led to the results which appeared in [5], [6] and [9]. However since some of the identities resulting from these efforts were eventually not needed, this additional work remained unpublished. As a consequence of very recent publications [4], [11], [19], [20], [21], a truly remarkable expansion of this theory has taken place. However most of this work has appeared in a language that is virtually inaccessible to practitioners of Algebraic Combinatorics. Yet, these developments have led to a variety of new conjectures in [2] in the Combinatorics and Symmetric function Theory of Macdonald Polynomials. The present work results from an effort to obtain in an elementary and accessible manner all the background necessary to construct the symmetric function side of some of these new conjectures. It turns out that the above mentioned unpublished results provide precisely the tools needed to carry out this project to its completion.

Hook coefficients of chromatic functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic symmetric function of a graph is a generalization of the chromatic polynomial. The key motivation for studying the structure of a chromatic symmetric function is to answer positivity conjectures by Stanley in 1995 and Gasharov in 1996. As a symmetric function one can write the chromatic symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. In this paper we address the positivity of the Schur coefficients when the parameter of the Schur function is a hook shape. Furthermore, when a graph is the incomparability graph of a poset with specific properties we construct a correspondence between acyclic orientations of the graph and P-tableaux with a hook shape.
Compositional (km,kn)-Shuffle Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2008, Haglund, Morse and Zabrocki formulated a Compositional form of the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund et al. In very recent work, Gorsky and Negut by combining their discoveries with the work of Schiffmann-Vasserot on the symmetric function side and the work of Hikita and Gorsky-Mazin on the combinatorial side, were led to formulate an infinite family of conjectures that extend the original Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund et al. In fact, they formulated one conjecture for each pair (m,n) of coprime integers. This work of Gorsky-Negut leads naturally to the question as to where the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund-Morse-Zabrocki fits into these recent developments. Our discovery here is that there is a compositional extension of the Gorsky-Negut Shuffle Conjecture for each pair (km,kn), with (m,n) co-prime and k > 1.

On the Schur expansion of Hall-Littlewood and related polynomials via Yamanouchi words
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper uses the theory of dual equivalence graphs to give explicit Schur expansions for several families of symmetric functions. We begin by giving a combinatorial definition of the modified Macdonald polynomials and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by any diagram $δ\subset {\mathbb Z} \times {\mathbb Z}$, written as $\widetilde H_δ(X;q,t)$ and $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$, respectively. We then give an explicit Schur expansion of $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$ as a sum over a subset of the Yamanouchi words, as opposed to the expansion using the charge statistic given in 1978 by Lascoux and Schüztenberger. We further define the symmetric function $R_{γ,δ}(X)$ as a refinement of $\widetilde H_δ(X;0,t)$ and similarly describe its Schur expansion. We then analyze $R_{γ,δ}(X)$ to determine the leading term of its Schur expansion. We also provide a conjecture towards the Schur expansion of $\widetilde H_δ(X;q,t)$. To gain these results, we use a construction from the 2007 work of Sami Assaf to associate each Macdonald polynomial with a signed colored graph $\mathcal{H}_δ$. In the case where a subgraph of $\mathcal{H}_δ$ is a dual equivalence graph, we provide the Schur expansion of its associated symmetric function, yielding several corollaries.

A Generalization of Tokuyama's Formula to the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.

Hopf Algebras of m-permutations, (m+1)-ary trees, and m-parking functions
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 117 (2020) 102019 • View PublicationBIB
The m-Tamari lattice of F. Bergeron is an analogue of the clasical Tamari order defined on objects counted by Fuss-Catalan numbers, such as m-Dyck paths or (m+1)-ary trees. On another hand, the Tamari order is related to the product in the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of planar binary trees. We introduce new combinatorial Hopf algebras based on (m+1)-ary trees, whose structure is described by the m-Tamari lattices. In the same way as planar binary trees can be interpreted as sylvester classes of permutations, we obtain (m+1)-ary trees as sylvester classes of what we call m-permutations. These objects are no longer in bijection with decreasing (m+1)-ary trees, and a finer congruence, called metasylvester, allows us to build Hopf algebras based on these decreasing trees. At the opposite, a coarser congruence, called hyposylvester, leads to Hopf algebras of graded dimensions (m+1)^{n-1}, generalizing noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions in a natural way. Finally, the algebras of packed words and parking functions also admit such m-analogues, and we present their subalgebras and quotients induced by the various congruences.

Kronecker Coefficients For Some Near-Rectangular Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give formulae for computing Kronecker coefficients occurring in the expansion of $s_μ*s_ν$, where both $μ$ and $ν$ are nearly rectangular, and have smallest parts equal to either 1 or 2. In particular, we study $s_{(n,n-1,1)}*s_{(n,n)}$, $s_{(n-1,n-1,1)}*s_{(n,n-1)}$, $s_{(n-1,n-1,2)}*s_{(n,n)}$, $s_{(n-1,n-1,1,1)}*s_{(n,n)}$ and $s_{(n,n,1)}*s_{(n,n,1)}$. Our approach relies on the interplay between manipulation of symmetric functions and the representation theory of the symmetric group, mainly employing the Pieri rule and a useful identity of Littlewood. As a consequence of these formulae, we also derive an expression enumerating certain standard Young tableaux of bounded height, in terms of the Motzkin and Catalan numbers.

Hall-Littlewood polynomials and Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for Jacobians of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for Jacobians of random graphs give rise to random partitions. We connect these random partitions to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of symmetric function theory, and use this connection to give combinatorial proofs of properties of these random partitions. In addition, we use Markov chains to give an algorithm for generating these partitions.

A Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule For Noncommutative Schur Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the noncommutative Schur functions introduced by Bessenrodt, Luoto and van Willigenburg. In other words, we give an explicit combinatorial formula for expanding the product of a noncommutative power sum symmetric function and a noncommutative Schur function in terms of noncommutative Schur functions. In direct analogy to the classical Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, the summands are computed using a noncommutative analogue of border strips, and have coefficients equal to 1 or -1 determined by the height of these border strips. The rule is proved by interpreting the noncommutative Pieri rules for noncommutative Schur functions in terms of box-adding operators on compositions.

Multivariate Juggling Probabilities
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 20 (2015), no. 5, 1-29 • View PublicationBIB
We consider refined versions of Markov chains related to juggling introduced by Warrington. We further generalize the construction to juggling with arbitrary heights as well as infinitely many balls, which are expressed more succinctly in terms of Markov chains on integer partitions. In all cases, we give explicit product formulas for the stationary probabilities. The normalization factor in one case can be explicitly written as a homogeneous symmetric polynomial. We also refine and generalize enriched Markov chains on set partitions. Lastly, we prove that in one case, the stationary distribution is attained in bounded time.

Whittaker vector of deformed Virasoro algebra and Macdonald symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a proof of Awata and Yamada's conjecture for the explicit formula of Whittaker vector of the deformed Virasoro algebra realized in the Fock space. The formula is expressed as a summation over Macdonald symmetric functions with factored coefficients. In the proof we fully use currents appearing in the Fock representation of Ding-Iohara-Miki quantum algebra. We also mention an interpretation of Whittaker vector in terms of the geometry of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane.
Bell polynomials in combinatorial Hopf algebras
Partial multivariate Bell polynomials have been defined by E.T. Bell in 1934. These polynomials have numerous applications in Combinatorics, Analysis, Algebra, Probabilities, etc. Many of the formulae on Bell polynomials involve combinatorial objects (set partitions, set partitions in lists, permutations, etc.). So it seems natural to investigate analogous formulae in some combinatorial Hopf algebras with bases indexed by these objects. The algebra of symmetric functions is the most famous example of a combinatorial Hopf algebra. In a first time, we show that most of the results on Bell polynomials can be written in terms of symmetric functions and transformations of alphabets. Then, we show that these results are clearer when stated in other Hopf algebras (this means that the combinatorial objects appear explicitly in the formulae). We investigate also the connexion with the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra and the Lagrange-B{ü}rmann formula.

Law of Large Numbers for Infinite Random Matrices over a Finite Field
Published • View PublicationBIB
Asymptotic representation theory of general linear groups GL(n,q) over a finite field leads to studying probability measures ρon the group U of all infinite uni-uppertriangular matrices over F_q, with the condition that ρis invariant under conjugations by arbitrary infinite matrices. Such probability measures form an infinite-dimensional simplex, and the description of its extreme points (in other words, ergodic measures ρ) was conjectured by Kerov in connection with nonnegative specializations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Vershik and Kerov also conjectured the following Law of Large Numbers. Consider an n by n diagonal submatrix of the infinite random matrix drawn from an ergodic measure coming from the Kerov's conjectural classification. The sizes of Jordan blocks of the submatrix can be interpreted as a (random) partition of n, or, equivalently, as a (random) Young diagram λ(n) with n boxes. Then, as n goes to infinity, the rows and columns of λ(n) have almost sure limiting frequencies corresponding to parameters of this ergodic measure. Our main result is the proof of this Law of Large Numbers. We achieve it by analyzing a new randomized Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) insertion algorithm which samples random Young diagrams λ(n) coming from ergodic measures. The probability weights of these Young diagrams are expressed in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our insertion algorithm is a modified and extended version of a recent construction by Borodin and the second author (arXiv:1305.5501). On the other hand, our randomized RSK insertion generalizes a version of the RSK insertion introduced by Vershik and Kerov (1986) in connection with asymptotic representation theory of symmetric groups (which is governed by nonnegative specializations of Schur symmetric functions).

Combinatorial Interpretation of the Scalar Products of State Vectors of Integrable Models
Published in J. Math. Sci., vol. 200, no. 6, (2014), 662-670 • View PublicationBIB
The representation of the Bethe wave functions of certain integrable models via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The algebraic relations arising in the calculation of the scalar products and the correlation functions are based on the Binet-Cauchy formula for the Schur functions. We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the formula for the scalar products of the Bethe state-vectors in terms of nests of the self-avoiding lattice paths constituting the so-called watermelon configurations. The interpretation proposed is, in its turn, related to the enumeration of the boxed plane partitions.

Refined Cauchy and Littlewood identities, plane partitions and symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 137 (2016), 126-165 • View PublicationBIB
We prove and conjecture some new symmetric function identities, which equate the generating series of 1. Plane partitions, subject to certain restrictions and weightings, and 2. Alternating sign matrices, subject to certain symmetry properties. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity, allowing them to be interpreted as generating series for plane partitions. The right hand side of each identity is a partition function of the six-vertex model, on a relevant domain. These can be interpreted as generating series for alternating sign matrices, using the well known bijection with six-vertex model configurations.

Correlation Functions of XX0 Heisenberg Chain, q-Binomial Determinants, and Random Walks
Published in Nuclear Physics B 879 [FS] (2014) 268-291 • View PublicationBIB
The XX0 Heisenberg model on a cyclic chain is considered. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the well-developed theory of the symmetric functions to the calculation of the thermal correlation functions. The determinantal expressions of the form-factors and of the thermal correlation functions are obtained. The q-binomial determinants enable the connection of the form-factors with the generating functions both of boxed plane partitions and of self-avoiding lattice paths. The asymptotical behavior of the thermal correlation functions is studied in the limit of low temperature provided that the characteristic parameters of the system are large enough.

Multilevel Dyson Brownian motions via Jack polynomials
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields, 163, no. 3 (2015), 413-463 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce multilevel versions of Dyson Brownian motions of arbitrary parameter $β>0$, generalizing the interlacing reflected Brownian motions of Warren for $β=2$. Such processes unify $β$ corners processes and Dyson Brownian motions in a single object. Our approach is based on the approximation by certain multilevel discrete Markov chains of independent interest, which are defined by means of Jack symmetric polynomials. In particular, this approach allows to show that the levels in a multilevel Dyson Brownian motion are intertwined (at least for $β\ge 1$) and to give the corresponding link explicitly.
