Combinatorial proofs of Petrie Pieri rule and Plethystic Pieri rule
Petrie symmetric functions $G(k,n)$, also known as truncated homogeneous symmetric functions or modular complete symmetric functions, form a class of symmetric functions interpolating between the elementary symmetric functions $e_n$ and the homogeneous symmetric functions $h_n$. Analogous to the Pieri rule for $s_μh_n$ and the dual Pieri rule for $s_μe_n$, Grinberg showed that the Schur coefficients for the ``Pieri rule'' of $s_μG(k,n)$ can be determined by the determinant $\pet_k(λ,μ)$ of Petrie matrices. Cheng, Chou, Eu, Fu, and Yao provided a ribbon tiling interpretation for the coefficient $\pet_k(λ,\varnothing)$, which was later generalized by Jin, Jing, and Liu to $\pet_k(λ,μ)$ in the case where $λ/μ$ is connected. The goal of this paper is to offer a more transparent combinatorial perspective on the structure and behavior of Petrie symmetric functions. First, we provide a refined combinatorial formula for the determinant of a Petrie matrix in terms of certain orientations of the associated graph derived from the matrix. We then generalize the result of JJL to arbitrary skew shapes using purely combinatorial proofs. In addition, we investigate the generating function of these orientations with respect to certain statistics. As an application of our method, we present a combinatorial proof of the plethystic Pieri rule.

Hopf algebra maps taking chromatic symmetric functions to their graph complements
Cho and van Willigenburg (arXiv:1508.07670) and Alinaeifard, Wang, and van Willgenburg (arXiv:2010.00147) introduce multiplicative chromatic bases for the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions, consisting of the chromatic symmetric functions (CSFs) of a sequence of connected graphs $G_1,G_2,\dots$ such that $G_n$ has total weight $n$, together with the CSFs of their disjoint unions. In arXiv:1707.04058, Tsujie introduces an alternative ring structure $\widetildeΛ$ on the vector space $Λ$ that makes CSFs multiply over joins instead of over disjoint unions. The $\widetilde{m}_λ$ basis, consisting of all CSFs of weighted cliques, is a multiplicative basis for $\widetildeΛ$, as is the $r_λ$ basis of complete multipartite graphs studied by Penaguiao (arXiv:1803.08824) and Crew and Spirkl (arXiv:2009.14141). We show that one can get more of these "cochromatic bases" (where the starting graphs are combined by joins instead of disjoint unions, hence forming a multiplicative basis for $\widetildeΛ$ instead of $Λ$) if and only if the starting graphs are edgeless. We also show that $\widetildeΛ$ is a Hopf algebra with the same coproduct as $Λ$, and that many of the chromatic bases for $Λ$ generated by cliques can be taken to their corresponding cochromatic bases via Hopf algebra isomorphisms $Λ\to \widetildeΛ.$ We also show that there is a single Hopf algebra morphism taking the CSFs of all unweighted triangle-free graphs to the CSFs of their complements, and we give several more conditions and examples for when one can or cannot find Hopf algebra maps taking the CSFs of certain graphs to the CSFs of their complements. Finally, we show that $K$-analogues of many of the above statements also hold if one instead uses the Kromatic symmetric function (KSF) defined by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl (arXiv:2301.02177).

Large deviations for probability graphons
We establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for probability graphons, which are symmetric functions from the unit square into the space of probability measures. This notion extends classical graphons and provides a flexible framework for studying the limit behavior of large dense weighted graphs. In particular, our result generalizes the seminal work of Chatterjee and Varadhan (2011), who derived an LDP for Erdős-Rényi random graphs via graphon theory. We move beyond their binary (Bernoulli) setting to encompass arbitrary edge-weight distributions. Specifically, we analyze the distribution on probability graphons induced by random weighted graphs in which edges are sampled independently from a common reference probability measure supported on a compact Polish space. We prove that this distribution satisfies an LDP with a good rate function, expressed as an extension of the Kullback-Leibler divergence between probability graphons and the reference measure. This theorem can also be viewed as a Sanov-type result in the graphon setting. Our work provides a rigorous foundation for analyzing rare events in weighted networks and supports statistical inference in structured random graph models under distributional edge uncertainty.

RSK and Quantum Symmetric Functions: A Combinatorial Approach
We explore an application of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) algorithm in the context of the quantum product of multi-symmetric functions. After reviewing the combinatorial foundations of quantum symmetric functions, we establish connections with transportation polytopes. Our approach highlights the combinatorial richness underlying the star product of symmetric functions.

Towards Upper and Lower Bounds for Chromatic Symmetric Functions in the Elementary Basis
Tatsuyuki Hikita recently proved the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture using probabilistic methods, showing that the chromatic symmetric functions of unit interval graphs are $e$-positive. Finding a combinatorial interpretation for these $e$-coefficients remains a major open problem. Towards this goal, we introduce sets of strong and powerful $P$-tableaux and conjecture that these sets undercount and overcount the $e$-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function $X_{inc(P)}(\mathbf{x}, q)$. We then use this framework to obtain combinatorial interpretations for various cases of $e$-expansion coefficients of chromatic symmetric functions of unit interval graphs. Additionally, we show that strong $P$-tableaux and the Shareshian--Wachs inversion statistic appear naturally in the proof of Hikita's result.

Polynomiality of the Striling coefficients of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$ and Fano schemes
We prove that the $d$-dependence of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$, the Chern class of the $\mathrm{GL}(n)$-representation of degree $d$ homogeneous polynomials in $n$ complex variables is polynomial. We also study the asymptotics of the polynomial $d$-dependence of this Chern class. We apply these results to solve a conjecture of Manivel on the degree of varieties of hypersurfaces containing linear subspaces. We also prove new formulas for the degree and Euler characteristics of Fano schemes of lines for generic hypersurfaces. To prove the polynomial dependence of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$ we introduce the notion of Striling coefficients. This can be considered as a generalization of Stirling numbers. We express the Stirling coefficients in terms of specializations of monomial symmetric polynomials so we can deduce their polynomiality and, in certain cases, their asymptotic behaviour.
Falling stars: a fall-decorated rational shuffle theorem
In this paper, we formulate a rational analog of the fall Delta theorem and the Delta square conjecture. We find a new dinv statistic on fall-decorated paths on a $(m+k) \times (n+k)$ rectangle that simultaneously extends the previously known dinv statistics on decorated square objects and non-decorated rectangular objects. We prove a symmetric function formula for the $q,t$-generating function of fall-decorated rectangular Dyck paths as a skewing operator applied to $e_{m,n+km}$ and, conditionally on the rectangular paths conjecture, an analog formula for fall-decorated rectangular paths.

Generalized Macdonald functions and quantum toroidal gl(1) algebra
The Macdonald operator is known to coincide with a certain element of the quantum toroidal $\mathfrak{gl}(1)$ algebra in the Fock representation of levels $(1,0)$. A generalization of this operator to higher levels $(r,0)$ can be built using the coproduct structure, it is diagonalized by the generalized Macdonald symmetric functions, indexed by $r$-tuple partitions and depending on $r$ alphabets. In this paper, we extend to the generalized case some of the known formulas obeyed by ordinary Macdonald symmetric functions, such as the $e_1$-Pieri rule or the identity relating them to Whittaker vectors obtained by Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. We also propose a generalization of the five-term relation, and the Fourier/Hopf pairing. In addition, we prove the factorized expression of the generalized Macdonald kernel conjectured previously by Zenkevich.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions for signed graphs
In 1995, Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, which specializes to its chromatic polynomial, and which has been the focus of intense research. In 2017, Shareshian, Wachs, and Ellzey defined a refinement of this function for a directed graph, that appears to be in $QSym$, the algebra of quasisymmetric functions, which is of great interest in algebraic combinatorics. Our goal is to extend this work to signed graphs, taking into account the perspective of the hyperplane arrangement associated with a signed graph, developed by Zaslavsky. We introduce the signed chromatic quasisymmetric invariant, and obtain structural properties. As a consequence, we define and study $SQSym$, the algebra of signed quasisymmetric functions.

On graphs with equal and different Kromatic symmetric functions
The Kromatic symmetric function (KSF) $\overline{X}_G$ of a graph $G$ is a $K$-analogue introduced by Crew, Pechenik, and Spirkl in arXiv:2301.02177 of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function (CSF) $X_G$. The KSF is known to distinguish some pairs of graphs with the same CSF. The first author showed in arXiv:2403.15929 and arXiv:2502.21285 that the number of copies in $G$ of certain induced subgraphs can be determined given $\overline{X}_G$, and conjectured that $\overline{X}_G$ distinguishes all graphs. We disprove that conjecture by finding four pairs of 8-vertex graphs with equal KSF, as well as giving several ways to use existing graph pairs with equal KSF to construct larger graph pairs that also have equal KSF. On the other hand, we show that many of the graph pairs from the constructions of Orellana and Scott in arXiv:1308.6005 and of Aliste-Prieto, Crew, Spirkl, and Zamora in arXiv:2007.11042 of graphs with the same CSF are distinguished by the KSF, thus also giving some new examples of cases where the KSF is a stronger invariant than the CSF.

Amplitude maximization in stable systems, Schur positivity, and some conjectures on polynomial interpolation
For $r > 0$ and integers $t \ge n > 0$, we consider the following problem: maximize the amplitude $|x_t|$ at time $t$, over all complex solutions $x = (x_0, x_1, \dots)$ of arbitrary homogeneous linear difference equations of order $n$ with the characteristic roots in the disc $\{z \in \mathbb{C}: |z| \le r\}$, and with initial values $x_0, \dots, x_{n-1}$ in the unit disc. We find that for any triple $t,n,r$, the maximum is attained with coinciding roots on the boundary circle; in particular, this implies that the peak amplitude $\sup_{t \ge n} |x_t|$ can be maximized explicitly, by studying a unique equation with the characteristic polynomial $(z-r)^n$. Moreover, the optimality of the cophase root configuration holds for origin-centered polydiscs. To prove this result, we first reduce the problem to a certain interpolation problem over monomials, then solve the latter by leveraging the theory of symmetric functions and identifying the associated Schur positivity structure. We also discuss the implications for more general Reinhardt domains. Finally, we study the problem of estimating the derivatives of a real entire function from its values at $n/2$ pairs of complex conjugate points in the unit disc. We propose conjectures on the extremality of the monomial $z^n$, and restate them in terms of Schur polynomials.
Quantum Corner Polynomials: A Generalization of Super Macdonald Polynomials and Their VOA Correspondence
In this paper, we introduce a family of partially symmetric polynomials, which we call quantum corner polynomials, as a generalization of the Sergeev-Veselov super Macdonald polynomials. We show that these quantum corner polynomials are precisely the partially symmetric polynomials corresponding to the quantum corner VOAs. Furthermore, we provide a detailed proof of the partial symmetricity of these polynomials.
Inversions in parking functions
In this paper, we obtain a q-exponential generating function for inversions on parking functions via symmetric function theory and also through a direct bijection to rooted labeled forests. We then apply these techniques to unit interval parking functions to give analogous results. We conclude by introducing a probabilistic approach through which we obtain formulas for the total number of inversions and several other statistics across all parking functions and other sets of words closed under rearrangement.
A refined twist on Hurwitz numbers
We introduce a two-parameter refinement of the Jucys-Murphy theory, that we call the CJT-refinement, unifying Schur, zonal, and, conjecturally, Jack actions of the ring of symmetric functions on the Fock space. Applications of this formalism include a partial resolution of a recent conjecture of Coulter-Do, as well as cut-and-join recursion for $b$-Hurwitz numbers. The cut-and-join equations enable the derivation of the tropicalization of $b$--Hurwitz numbers. We also provide a first application of this tropical interpretation by answering an open problem of Chapuy-Dołęga on the polynomial structure of $b$-Hurwitz numbers.

Monotonicity for generalized binomial coefficients and Jack positivity
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 93B (2025), Article #139 • Search Publication
Binomial formulas for Schur polynomials and Jack polynomials were studied by Lascoux in 1978, and Kaneko, Okounkov--Olshanski and Lassalle in the 1990s. We prove that the associated binomial coefficients are monotone and derive some symmetric function inequalities, in particular, a Schur positivity and Jack positivity result. These inequalities are similar to those studied by Newton, Muirhead, Gantmacher, Cuttler--Greene--Skandera, Sra and Khare--Tao.
A plethystic chain rule
We consider a derivation $\mathsf{D}$ on the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions and investigate its combinatorial, algebraic and geometric properties. More precisely, we show that $\mathsf{D}$ restricts to a quasi-isometry, with respect to the Hall product, on the graded component of $Λ$ of each positive degree and provide a chain-rule formula with respect to the plethysm operation. Furthermore, we relate the geometry of the Schur functions supporting $\mathsf{D}(f)$, where $f\in Λ$ is an homogeneous symmetric function, to that of $f$.

Weighted $K$-$k$-Schur functions and their application to the $K$-$k$-Schur alternating conjecture
We introduce the new concept of weighted $K$-$k$-Schur functions -- a novel family within the broader class of Katalan functions -- that unifies and extends both $K$-$k$-Schur functions and closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions. This new notion exhibits a fundamental alternating property under certain conditions on the indexed $k$-bounded partitions. As a central application, we resolve the $K$-$k$-Schur alternating conjecture -- posed by Blasiak, Morse, and Seelinger in 2022 -- for a wide class of $k$-bounded partitions, including all strictly decreasing $k$-bounded partitions. Our results shed new light on the combinatorial structure of $K$-theoretic symmetric functions.

Chromatic MacMahon symmetric functions of graphs
A MacMahon symmetric function is an invariant of the diagonal action of the symmetric group on power series in multiple alphabets of variables. We introduce an analogue of the chromatic symmetric function for vertex-weighted graphs, taking values in the MacMahon symmetric functions on two sets of variables, recording information about both cardinalities and weights of vertex sets. We prove that the chromatic symmetric MacMahon function of a tree determines the generating function for its vertex subsets by cardinality, weight, and the numbers of internal and external edges. This result generalizes the one for the unweighted case, first conjectured by Crew and proved independently by Aliste-Prieto--Martin--Wagner--Zamora and Liu--Tang.

Fano schemes of sub-maximal elementary symmetric functions
Denote by $E_r$ the $r^{th}$ elementary symmetric polynomial in $\dim V$ variables for a vector space $V$ over an infinite field $\Bbbk$. We describe the rational points on the Fano scheme $F_{d-1}(Z(E_{\dim V-1}))$ of projective $(d-1)$-spaces contained in the zero locus of $E_{\dim V-1}$. Isolated points exist precisely for $\dim V=2d$, in which case they are in bijection with the $1\cdot 3\cdots (2d-1)$ pairings on a $2d$-element set. This, in particular, confirming a conjecture of Ambartsoumian, Auel and Jebelli to the effect that (over $\mathbb{R}$) all isolated points are recoverable via integral star transforms with appropriate symbols.

On the reconstruction of trees from their chromatic symmetric functions
We study Stanley's chromatic symmetric function (CSF) for trees when expressed in the star basis. We use the deletion-near-contraction (DNC) algorithm to compute coefficients that occur in the CSF in the star basis. In particular, one of our main results determines the smallest partition in lexicographic order that occurs as an indexing partition in the CSF, and we also give a formula for its coefficient. In addition to describing properties of trees encoded in the coefficients of the star basis, we give an algorithm for reconstructing trees of diameter less than six.
