Applications of Waring's formula to some identities of Chebyshev polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Some identities of Chebyshev polynomials are deduced from Waring's formula on symmetric functions. In particular, these formulae generalize some recent results of Grabner and Prodinger.

Nonintersecting Paths, Noncolliding Diffusion Processes and Representation Theory
Published in RIMS Kokyuroku 1438 (2005) 83-102 • Search Publication
The system of one-dimensional symmetric simple random walks, in which none of walkers have met others in a given time period, is called the vicious walker model. It was introduced by Michael Fisher and applications of the model to various wetting and melting phenomena were described in his Boltzmann medal lecture. In the present report, we explain interesting connections among representation theory, probability theory, and random matrix theory using this simple diffusion particle system. Each vicious walk of $N$ walkers is represented by an $N$-tuple of nonintersecting lattice paths on the spatio-temporal plane. There is established a simple bijection between nonintersecting lattice paths and semistandard Young tableaux. Based on this bijection and some knowledge of symmetric polynomials called the Schur functions, we can give a determinantal expression to the partition function of vicious walks, which is regarded as a special case of the Karlin-McGregor formula in the probability theory (or the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot formula in the enumerative combinatorics). Due to a basic property of Schur function, we can take the diffusion scaling limit of the vicious walks and define a noncolliding system of Brownian particles. This diffusion process solves the stochastic differential equations with the drift terms acting as the repulsive two-body forces proportional to the inverse of distances between particles, and thus it is identified with Dyson's Brownian motion model. In other words, the obtained noncolliding system of Brownian particles is equivalent in distribution with the eigenvalue process of a Hermitian matrix-valued process.

Symmetric functions in superspace
We construct a generalization of the theory of symmetric functions involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions, called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group acting on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. We first obtain superspace analogues of a number of standard objects and concepts in the theory of symmetric functions: partitions, monomials, elementary symmetric functions, completely symmetric functions, power sums, involutions, generating functions, Cauchy formulas, and scalar products. We then consider a one-parameter extension of the combinatorial scalar product. It provides the natural setting for the definition of a family of ``combinatorial'' orthogonal Jack polynomials in superspace. We show that this family coincides with that of ``physical'' Jack polynomials in superspace that were previously introduced by the authors as orthogonal eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The equivalence of the two families is established by showing that the ``physical'' Jack polynomials are also orthogonal with respect to the combinatorial scalar product. This equivalence is also directly demonstrated for particular values of the free parameter.

Some positive differences of products of Schur functions
The product $s_μs_ν$ of two Schur functions is one of the most famous examples of a Schur-positive function, i.e. a symmetric function which, when written as a linear combination of Schur functions, has all positive coefficients. We ask when expressions of the form $s_λs_ρ- s_μs_ν$ are Schur-positive. This general question seems to be a difficult one, but a conjecture of Fomin, Fulton, Li and Poon says that it is the case at least when $λ$ and $ρ$ are obtained from $μ$ and $ν$ by redistributing the parts of $μ$ and $ν$ in a specific, yet natural, way. We show that their conjecture is true in several significant cases. We also formulate a skew-shape extension of their conjecture, and prove several results which serve as evidence in favor of this extension. Finally, we take a more global view by studying two classes of partially ordered sets suggested by these questions.
Free quasi-symmetric functions, product actions and quantum field theory of partitions
We examine two associative products over the ring of symmetric functions related to the intransitive and Cartesian products of permutation groups. As an application, we give an enumeration of some Feynman type diagrams arising in Bender's QFT of partitions. We end by exploring possibilities to construct noncommutative analogues.

The smash product of symmetric functions. Extended abstract
We construct a new operation among representations of the symmetric group that interpolates between the classical internal and external products, which are defined in terms of tensor product and induction of representations. Following Malvenuto and Reutenauer, we pass from symmetric functions to non-commutative symmetric functions and from there to the algebra of permutations in order to relate the internal and external products to the composition and convolution of linear endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. The new product we construct corresponds to the smash product of endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. For symmetric functions, the smash product is given by a construction which combines induction and restriction of representations. For non-commutative symmetric functions, the structure constants of the smash product are given by an explicit combinatorial rule which extends a well-known result of Garsia, Remmel, Reutenauer, and Solomon for the descent algebra. We describe the dual operation among quasi-symmetric functions in terms of alphabets.

Diagonal Temperley-Lieb Invariants and Harmonics
Published in Sém. Lothar. Combin. 54A (2005/07), Art. B54Aq, 19 pp. • Search Publication
In the context of the ring Q[x,y], of polynomials in 2n variables x=x1,...,x_n and y=y1,...,yn, we introduce the notion of diagonally quasi-symmetric polynomials. These, also called "diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants", make possible the further introduction of the space of "diagonal Temperley-Lieb harmonics" and "diagonal Temperley-Lieb coinvariant space". We present new results and conjectures concerning these spaces, as well as the space obtained as the quotient of the ring of diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants by the ideal generated by constant term free diagonally symmetric invariants. We also describe how the space of diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants affords a natural graded Hopf algebra structure, for n going to infinity. We finally show how this last space and its graded dual Hopf algebra are related to the well known Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasi-symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions.

Higher order peak algebras
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 9:4 (2005), 411-430 • View PublicationBIB
Using the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions, we introduce the higher order peak algebras, a sequence of graded Hopf algebras which contain the descent algebra and the usual peak algebra as initial cases (N = 1 and N = 2). We compute their Hilbert series, introduce and study several combinatorial bases, and establish various algebraic identities related to the multisection of formal power series with noncommutative coefficients.
Brill-Gordan Loci, Transvectants and an Analogue of the Foulkes Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combining a selection of tools from modern algebraic geometry, representation theory, the classical invariant theory of binary forms, together with explicit calculations with hypergeometric series and Feynman diagrams, we obtain the following interrelated results. A Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound and a projective normality result for the locus of hypersufaces that are equally supported on two hyperplanes. The surjectivity of an equivariant map between two plethystic compositions of symmetric powers; a statement which is reminiscent of the Foulkes-Howe conjecture. The nonvanishing of even transvectants of exact powers of generic binary forms. The nonvanishing of a collection of symmetric functions defined by sums over magic squares and transportation matrices with nonnegative integer entries. An explicit set of generators, in degree three, for the ideal of the coincident root locus of binary forms with only two roots of equal multiplicity.

We prove an identity for Hall--Littlewood symmetric functions labelled by the Lie algebra A_2. Through specialization this yields a simple proof of the A_2 Rogers--Ramanujan identities of Andrews, Schilling and the author.

Symmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and quasisymmetric functions
Published in Acta Appl. Math. 75 (2003), 55-83 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is concerned with two generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions that have more or less recently appeared. The Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions and its dual, the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. The focus is on the incredibly rich structure of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions and the question of which structures and properties have good analogues for the noncommutative symmetric functions and/or the quasisymmetric functions. This paper attempt to survey the ongoing investigations in this topic as dictated by the knowledge and interests of its author. There are many open questions that are discussed.

Word Hopf algebras
Two important generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions are the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions and its graded dual the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. A common generalization of the latter is the selfdual Hopf algebra of permutations (MPR Hopf algebra). This latter Hopf algebra can be seen as a Hopf algebra of endomorphisms of a Hopf algebra. That turns out to be a fruitful way of looking at things and gives rise to wide ranging further generalizations such as the word Hopf algebra and the double word Hopf algebra (and many more).

Hopf algebras of endomorphisms of Hopf algebras
In the last decennia two generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions have appeared and shown themselves important, the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions NSymm and the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions QSymm. It has also become clear that it is important to understand the noncommutative versions of such important structures as Symm the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. Not least because the right noncommmutative versions are often more beautiful than the commutaive ones (not all cluttered up with counting coefficients). NSymm and QSymm are not truly the full noncommutative generalizations. One is maximally noncommutative but cocommutative, the other is maximally non cocommutative but commutative. There is a common, selfdual generalization, the Hopf algebra of permutations of Malvenuto, Poirier, and Reutenauer (MPR). This one is, I feel, best understood as a Hopf algebra of endomorphisms. In any case, this point of view suggests vast generalizations leading to the Hopf algebras of endomorphisms and word Hopf algebras with which this paper is concerned. This point of view also sheds light on the somewhat mysterious formulas of MPR and on the question where all the extra structure (such as autoduality) comes from. The paper concludes with a few sections on the structure of MPR and the question of algebra retractions of the natural inclusion of Hopf algebras of NSymm into MPR and section of the naural projection of MPR onto QSymm.

The primitives of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let NSymm be the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions over the integers. In this paper a description is given of its Lie algebra of primitives over the integers, Prim(NSymm), in terms of recursion formulas. For each of the primitives of a basis of Prim(NSymm), indexed by Lyndon words, there is a recursively given divided power series over it. This gives another proof of the theorem that the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions is free over the integers.

Ribbon Schur Operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new combinatorial approach to the ribbon tableaux generating functions and q-Littlewood Richardson coefficients of Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon is suggested. We define operators which add ribbons to partitions and following Fomin and Greene study non-commutative symmetric functions in these operators. This allows us to give combinatorial interpretations for some (skew) q-Littlewood Richardson coefficients whose non-negativity appears not to be known. Our set up also leads to a new proof of the action of the Heisenberg algebra on the Fock space of U_q(sl^_n) due to Kashiwara, Miwa and Stern.

Structure of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of trees
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 295, Issue 2 , 15 January 2006, 473--511. • View PublicationBIB
Loday and Ronco defined an interesting Hopf algebra structure on the linear span of the set of planar binary trees. They showed that the inclusion of the Hopf algebra of non-commutative symmetric functions in the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations factors through their Hopf algebra of trees, and these maps correspond to natural maps from the weak order on the symmetric group to the Tamari order on planar binary trees to the boolean algebra. We further study the structure of this Hopf algebra of trees using a new basis for it. We describe the product, coproduct, and antipode in terms of this basis and use these results to elucidate its Hopf-algebraic structure. We also obtain a transparent proof of its isomorphism with the non-commutative Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of Foissy, and show that this algebra is related to non-commutative symmetric functions as the (commutative) Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra is related to symmetric functions.

The ring of multisymmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let R be a commutative ring and let n,m be two positive integers. The symmetric group on n letters acts diagonally on the ring of polynomials in nxm variables with coefficients in R. The subrings of invariants for this action is called the ring of multisymmetric functions since these are the usual symmetric functions when m=1. In this paper we will give a presentation in terms of generators and relations that holds for any R and any n,m answering in this way to a classical question. I would like to thank M.Brion, C.De Concini and C.Procesi, in alphabetical order, for useful discussions.
Decomposable compositions, symmetric quasisymmetric functions and equality of ribbon Schur functions
Published in Adv. Math. 204: 204--240 (2006) • View PublicationBIB
We define an equivalence relation on integer compositions and show that two ribbon Schur functions are identical if and only if their defining compositions are equivalent in this sense. This equivalence is completely determined by means of a factorization for compositions: equivalent compositions have factorizations that differ only by reversing some of the terms. As an application, we can derive identities on certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Finally, we consider the cone of symmetric functions having a nonnnegative representation in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric basis. We show the Schur functions are among the extremes of this cone and conjecture its facets are in bijection with the equivalence classes of compositions.

Signature quantization, representations of compact Lie groups, and a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss some applications of signature quantization to the representation theory of compact Lie groups. In particular, we prove signature analogues of the Kostant formula for weight multiplicities and the Steinberg formula for tensor product multiplicities. Using symmetric functions, we also find, for type A, analogues of the Weyl branching rule and the Gelfand-Tsetlin theorem. These analogues involve a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function. We show that in type A, this q-analogue is polynomial in the relative interior of the cells of a complex of cones. This chamber complex can be taken to be the same as the chamber complex of the usual Kostant partition function. We present the case of A_2 as a detailed example.

Matrix methods for arithmetic functions
We apply matrix methods to arithmetic functions by associating matrices to the functions in a manner drawn from the theory of symmetric functions. Then we study the characteristic polynomials of the associated matrices.
