An extension of Maclaurin's inequalities
We give a combinatorial extension of the classical inequalities of Maclaurin about symmetric functions of several variables. We discuss two problems - one analytical and another combinatorial - and show that they are in some sense equaivalent. These results complete and extend earlier results of Motzkin and Straus, Khadzhiivanov, Sos and Straus, Fisher and Ryan, and Petingi and Rodriguez.

A unifying framework for $k$-statistics, polykays and their multivariate generalizations
Published in Bernoulli 2008, Vol. 14, No. 2, 440-468 • View PublicationBIB
Through the classical umbral calculus, we provide a unifying syntax for single and multivariate $k$-statistics, polykays and multivariate polykays. From a combinatorial point of view, we revisit the theory as exposed by Stuart and Ord, taking into account the Doubilet approach to symmetric functions. Moreover, by using exponential polynomials rather than set partitions, we provide a new formula for $k$-statistics that results in a very fast algorithm to generate such estimators.

Representation theories of some towers of algebras related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras
We study the representation theory of three towers of algebras which are related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras. The first one is constructed as the algebras generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. The two others are the monoid algebras of nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions. For these three towers, we describe the structure of simple and indecomposable projective modules, together with the Cartan map. The Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by the induction product and the restriction coproduct are also given explicitly. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

Noncommutative Symmetric Functions Associated with a Code, Lazard Elimination, and Witt Vectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
The construction of the universal ring of Witt vectors is related to Lazard's factorizations of free monoids by means of a noncommutative analogue. This is done by associating to a code a specialization of noncommutative symmetric functions.

Generalized symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that over an infinite field the ring of symmetric functions in a finite number of variables is isomorphic to the one of polynomial functions on matrices that are invariants by the action of conjugation by general linear group. We generalize this result showing that the abelianization of the algebra of the symmetric tensors of fixed order over a free associative algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of the polynomials invariants of several matrices over an infinite field or the integers. While proving the main result we find generators and relations of abelianized divided powers of an algebra over any commutative ring.

Crystal bases and combinatorics of infinite rank quantum groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic algebra and plactic Schur functions distinct for each infinite root system. Surprisingly, the algebras spanned by these plactic Schur functions are all isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions.

Degree-k linear recursions mod(p) and number fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linear recursions of degree $k$ are determined by evaluating the sequence of Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials, $\{F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k)\}$ (isobaric reflects of the complete symmetric polynomials) at the integer vectors $(t_1,...,t_k)$. If $F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k) = f_n$, then $$f_n - \sum_{j=1}^k t_j f_{n-j} = 0,$$ and $\{f_n\}$ is a linear recursion of degree $k$. On the one hand, the periodic properties of such sequences modulo a prime $p$ are discussed, and are shown to be related to the prime structure of certain algebraic number fields; for example, the arithmetic properties of the period are shown to characterize ramification of primes in an extension field. On the other hand, the structure of the semilocal rings associated with the number field is shown to be completely determined by Schur-hook polynomials. Keywords: Symmetric polynomials, Schur polynomials, linear recursions, number fields.

Alternating permutations and symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use the theory of symmetric functions to enumerate various classes of alternating permutations w of {1,2,...,n}. These classes include the following: (1) both w and w^{-1} are alternating, (2) w has certain special shapes, such as (m-1,m-2,...,1), under the RSK algorithm, (3) w has a specified cycle type, and (4) w has a specified number of fixed points. We also enumerate alternating permutations of a multiset. Most of our formulas are umbral expressions where after expanding the expression in powers of a variable E, E^k is interpreted as the Euler number E_k. As a small corollary, we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of an asymptotic expansion appearing in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook.

In this paper we prove the Dipper-James conjecture that the centre of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A is the set of symmetric polynomials in the Jucys-Murphy operators.

The Hecke algebra and structure constants of the ring of symmetric polynomials
We give half a dozen bases of the Hecke algebra of the symmetric group, and relate them to the basis of Geck-Rouquier, and to the basis of Jones, using matrices of change of bases of the ring of symmetric polynomials.

The differential equation satisfied by a plane curve of degree n
Published • View PublicationBIB
Eliminating the arbitrary coefficients in the equation of a generic plane curve of order $n$ by computing sufficiently many derivatives, one obtains a differential equation. This is a projective invariant. The first one, corresponding to conics, has been obtained by Monge. Sylvester, Halphen, Cartan used invariants of higher order. The expression of these invariants is rather complicated, but becomes much simpler when interpreted in terms of symmetric functions.

Noncommutative Bessel symmetric functions
Published in Canadian Mathematical Bulletin 51 (2008), no. 3, 424--438 • View PublicationBIB
The consideration of tensor products of 0-Hecke algebra modules leads to natural analogs of the Bessel J-functions in the algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions. This provides a simple explanation of various combinatorial properties of Bessel functions.

The characteristic ideal of a finite, connected, regular graph
Published in Proc. ISSAC-2004, ACM, 50-57 • Search Publication
Let $Φ(x,y)\in\mathbb{C}[x,y]$ be a symmetric polynomial of partial degree $d$. The graph $G(Φ)$ is defined by taking $\mathbb{C}$ as set of vertices and the points of $\mathbb{V}(Φ(x,y))$ as edges. We study the following problem: given a finite, connected, $d$-regular graph $H$, find the polynomials $Φ(x,y)$ such that $G(Φ)$ has some connected component isomorphic to $H$ and, in this case, if $G(Φ)$ has (almost) all components isomorphic to $H$. The problem is solved by associating to $H$ a characteristic ideal which offers a new perspective to the conjecture formulated in a previous paper, and allows to reduce its scope. In the second part, we determine the characteristic ideal for cycles of lengths $\le 5$ and for complete graphs of order $\le 6$. This results provide new evidence for the conjecture.

A Little bijection for affine Stanley symmetric functions
David Little developed a combinatorial algorithm to study the Schur-positivity of Stanley symmetric functions and the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree. We generalize this algorithm to affine Stanley symmetric functions.

On an identity due to ((Bump and Diaconis) and (Tracy and Widom))
Published in Canadian Math. Bulletin 54 (2011) no. 2, 255-269 • View PublicationBIB
A classical question for a Toeplitz matrix with given symbol is to compute asymptotics for the determinants of its reductions to finite rank. One can also consider how those asymptotics are affected when shifting an initial set of rows and columns (or, equivalently, asymptotics of their minors). Bump and Diaconis (Toeplitz minors, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 97 (2002), pp. 252--271) obtained a formula for such shifts involving Laguerre polynomials and sums over symmetric groups. They also showed how the Heine identity extends for such minors, which makes this question relevant to Random Matrix Theory. Independently, Tracy and Widom (On the limit of some Toeplitz-like determinants, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 23 (2002), pp. 1194--1196) used the Wiener-Hopf factorization to express those shifts in terms of products of infinite matrices. We show directly why those two expressions are equal and uncover some structure in both formulas that was unknown to their authors. We introduce a mysterious differential operator on symmetric functions that is very similar to vertex operators. We show that the Bump-Diaconis-Tracy- Widom identity is a differentiated version of the classical Jacobi-Trudi identity.

Alcove walks, Hecke algebras, spherical functions, crystals and column strict tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper makes precise the close connection between the affine Hecke algebra, the path model, and the theory of crystals. Section 2 is a basic pictorial exposition of Weyl groups and affine Weyl groups and Section 5 is an exposition of the theory of (a) symmetric functions, (b) crystals and (c) the path model. Sections 3 and 4 give an exposition of the affine Hecke algebra and recent results regarding the combinatorics of spherical functions on p-adic groups (Hall-Littlewood polynomials). The $q$-analogue of the theory of crystals developed in Section 4 specializes to the path model version of the ``classical'' crystal theory. The connection to the affine Hecke algebra and the approach to spherical functions for a $p$-adic group in Nelsen-Ram was made concrete by C. Schwer who told me that ``the periodic Hecke module encodes the positively folded galleries'' of Gaussent-Littelmann. This paper is a further development of this point of view.

The $m$-colored composition poset
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize Björner and Stanley's poset of compositions to $m$-colored compositions. Their work draws many analogies between their (1-colored) composition poset and Young's lattice of partitions, including links to (quasi-)symmetric functions and representation theory. Here we show that many of these analogies hold for any number of colors. While many of the proofs for Björner and Stanley's poset were simplified by showing isomorphism with the subword order, we remark that with 2 or more colors, our posets are not isomorphic to a subword order.

On the characteristic map of finite unitary groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In his classic book on symmetric functions, Macdonald describes a remarkable result by Green relating the character theory of the finite general linear group to transition matrices between bases of symmetric functions. This connection allows us to analyze the representation theory of the general linear group via symmetric group combinatorics. Using the work of Ennola, Kawanaka, Lusztig and Srinivasan, this paper describes the analogous setting for the finite unitary group. In particular, we explain the connection between Deligne-Lusztig theory and Ennola's efforts to generalize Green's work, and deduce various representation theoretic results from these results. Applications include finding certain sums of character degrees, and a model of Deligne-Lusztig type for the finite unitary group, which parallels results of Klyachko and Inglis and Saxl for the finite general linear group.

Hopf algebras and dendriform structures arising from parking functions
Published in Fundamenta Mathematicae 193 (2007), 189-241 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3. These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco. Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.
