A noncommutative Bohnenblust-Spitzer identity for Rota-Baxter algebras solves Bogoliubov's recursion
Published in Journal of Noncommutative Geometry, Vol. 3, Issue 2 (2009), 181-222 • View PublicationBIB
The Bogoliubov recursion is a particular procedure appearing in the process of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory. It provides convergent expressions for otherwise divergent integrals. We develop here a theory of functional identities for noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras which is shown to encode, among others, this process in the context of Connes-Kreimer's Hopf algebra of renormalization. Our results generalize the seminal Cartier-Rota theory of classical Spitzer-type identities for commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. In the classical, commutative, case, these identities can be understood as deriving from the theory of symmetric functions. Here, we show that an analogous property holds for noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras. That is, we show that functional identities in the noncommutative setting can be derived from the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions. Lie idempotents, and particularly the Dynkin idempotent play a crucial role in the process. Their action on the pro-unipotent groups such as those of perturbative renormalization is described in detail along the way.

On the Young-Fibonacci insertion algorithm
This work is concerned with some properties of the Young-Fibonacci insertion algorithm and its relation with Fomin's growth diagrams. It also investigates a relation between the combinatorics of Young-Fibonacci tableaux and the study of Okada's algebra associated to the Young-Fibonacci lattice. The original algorithm was introduced by Roby and we redefine it in such a way that both the insertion and recording tableaux of any permutation are \emph{conveniently} interpreted as chains in the Young-Fibonacci lattice. A property of Killpatrick's evacuation is given a simpler proof, but this evacuation is no longer needed in making Roby's and Fomin's constructions coincide. We provide the set of Young-Fibonacci tableaux of size $n$ with a structure of graded poset, induced by the weak order on permutations of the symmetric group, and realized by transitive closure of elementary transformations on tableaux. We show that this poset gives a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients in the transition matrix from the analogue of complete symmetric functions to analogue of the Schur functions in Okada's algebra. We end with a quite similar observation for four posets on Young-tableaux studied by Taskin.

The Hopf Algebra Structure of the Character Rings of Classical Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analogous to those used for \Sym. A major structural change arising from the adoption of these bases is the introduction of new orthogonal and symplectic Schur-Hall scalar products. Significantly, the adjoint with respect to multiplication no longer coincides, as it does in the \CGL case, with a Foulkes derivative or skew operation. The adjoint and Foulkes derivative now require separate definitions, and their properties are explored here in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. Moreover, the Hopf algebras \CO and \CSp are not self-dual. The dual Hopf algebras \CO^* and \CSp^* are identified. Finally, the Hopf algebra of the universal rational character ring \CGLrat of mixed irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group is introduced and its structure maps identified.

On the S_n-module structure of the noncommutative harmonics

Using a noncommutative analog of Chevalley's decomposition of polynomials into symmetric polynomials times coinvariants due to Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki we compute the graded Frobenius series for their two sets of noncommutative harmonics with respect to the left action of the symmetric group (acting on variables). We use these results to derive the Frobenius series for the enveloping algebra of the derived free Lie algebra in n variables.

Littlewood-Richardson polynomials
Published in J. Algebra 321 (2009), 3450-3468. • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of rings of symmetric functions depending on an infinite sequence of parameters. A distinguished basis of such a ring is comprised by analogues of the Schur functions. The corresponding structure coefficients are polynomials in the parameters which we call the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials. We give a combinatorial rule for their calculation by modifying an earlier result of B. Sagan and the author. The new rule provides a formula for these polynomials which is manifestly positive in the sense of W. Graham. We apply this formula for the calculation of the product of equivariant Schubert classes on Grassmannians which implies a stability property of the structure coefficients. The first manifestly positive formula for such an expansion was given by A. Knutson and T. Tao by using combinatorics of puzzles while the stability property was not apparent from that formula. We also use the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials to describe the multiplication rule in the algebra of the Casimir elements for the general linear Lie algebra in the basis of the quantum immanants constructed by A. Okounkov and G. Olshanski.

Stabilized plethysms for the classical Lie groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The plethysms of the Weyl characters associated to a classical Lie group by the symmetric functions stabilize in large rank. In the case of a power sum plethysm, we prove that the coefficients of the decomposition of this stabilized form on the basis of Weyl characters are branching coefficients which can be determined by a simple algorithm. This generalizes in particular some classical results by Littlewood on the power sum plethysms of Schur functions. We also establish explicit formulas for the outer multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the tensor square of any irreducible finite dimensional module into its symmetric and antisymmetric parts. These multiplicities can notably be expressed in terms of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Discrete excursions
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 57 (2008) 23 pp • Search Publication
It is well-known that the length generating function E(t) of Dyck paths (excursions with steps +1 and -1) satisfies 1-E+t^2E^2=0. The generating function E^(k)(t) of Dyck paths of height at most k is E^(k)=F_k/F_{k+1}, where the F_k are polynomials in t given by F_0=F_1=1 and F_{k+1}= F_k-t^2F_{k-1}. This means that the generating function of these polynomials is \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= 1/(1-z+t^2z^2). We note that the denominator of this fraction is the minimal polynomial of the algebraic series E(t). This pattern persists for walks with more general steps. For any finite set of steps S, the generating function E^(k)(t) of excursions (generalized Dyck paths) taking their steps in S and of height at most k is the ratio F_k/F_{k+1} of two polynomials. These polynomials satisfy a linear recurrence relation with coefficients in Q[t]. Their (rational) generating function can be written \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= N(t,z)/D(t,z). The excursion generating function E(t) is algebraic and satisfies D(t,E(t))=0 (while N(t,E(t))\not = 0). If max S=a and min S=b, the polynomials D(t,z) and N(t,z) can be taken to be respectively of degree d_{a,b}=binomial(a+b,a) and d_{a,b}-a-b in z. These degrees are in general optimal: for instance, when S={a,-b} with a and b coprime, D(t,z) is irreducible, and is thus the minimal polynomial of the excursion generating function E(t). The proofs of these results involve a slightly unusual mixture of combinatorial and algebraic tools, among which the kernel method (which solves certain functional equations), symmetric functions, and a pinch of Galois theory.

On the elementary symmetric functions of a sum of matrices
Published in Journal of Algebra, Number Theory: Advances and Applications Volume 1, Number 2, 2009, Pages 99-112 • Search Publication
Often in mathematics it is useful to summarize a multivariate phenomenon with a single number and in fact, the determinant -- which is represented by det -- is one of the simplest cases. In fact, this number it is defined only for square matrices and a lot of its properties are very well-known. For instance, the determinant is a multiplicative function, i.e. det(AB)=detA detB, but it is not, in general, an additive function. Another interesting function in the matrix analysis is the characteristic polynomial -- in fact, given a matrix A, this function is defined by $p_A(t)=det(tI-A)$ where I is the identity matrix -- which elements are, up a sign, the elementary symmetric functions associated to the eigenvalues of the matrix A. In the present paper new expressions related with the determinant of sum of matrices and the elementary symmetric functions are given. Moreover, the connection with the Mobius function and the partial ordered sets (poset) is presented. Finally, a problem related with the determinant of sum of matrices is solved.

Macdonald Polynomials and Multivariable Basic Hypergeometric Series
Published in SIGMA 3 (2007), 056, 30 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexed by partitions with complex parts. These appear to possess nice properties.

Gelfand-Graev characters of the finite unitary groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gelfand-Graev characters and their degenerate counterparts have an important role in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Using a characteristic map to translate the character theory of the finite unitary groups into the language of symmetric functions, we study degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters of the finite unitary group from a combinatorial point of view. In particular, we give the values of Gelfand-Graev characters at arbitrary elements, recover the decomposition multiplicities of degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters in terms of tableau combinatorics, and conclude with some multiplicity consequences.

Equivariant cohomology, symmetric functions and the Hilbert schemes of points on the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line
Let X be the quasi-projective symplectic surface that is given by the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line. Let Hilb X be the family of Hilbert schemes of points on X. We give and prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the Hilb X in terms of the standard Fock space description of the cohomology of the Hilb X. As a side result, we also deduce a formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of the Hilb X. The results found here are another step towards a complete description of the tangent bundle of the Hilbert scheme of a general quasi-projective surface as the formulas given here yield certain coefficients in that description. Finally, we also give a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on some tautological bundles on the Hilb X.

Shifted set families, degree sequences, and plethysm
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study, in three parts, degree sequences of k-families (or k-uniform hypergraphs) and shifted k-families. The first part collects for the first time in one place, various implications such as: Threshold implies Uniquely Realizable implies Degree-Maximal implies Shifted, which are equivalent concepts for 2-families (=simple graphs), but strict implications for k-families with k > 2. The implication that uniquely realizable implies degree-maximal seems to be new. The second part recalls Merris and Roby's reformulation of the characterization due to Ruch and Gutman for graphical degree sequences and shifted 2-families. It then introduces two generalizations which are characterizations of shifted k-families. The third part recalls the connection between degree sequences of k-families of size m and the plethysm of elementary symmetric functions e_m[e_k]. It then uses highest weight theory to explain how shifted k-families provide the ``top part'' of these plethysm expansions, along with offering a conjecture about a further relation.
Bitableaux bases for Garsia-Haiman modules of hollow type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Garsia-Haiman modules are quotient rings in variables X_n={x_1, x_2, ..., x_n} and Y_n=y_1, y_2, ..., y_n} that generalize the quotient ring C[X_n]/I, where I is the ideal generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials e_j(X_n) for 1 <= j <= n. A bitableaux basis for the Garsia-Haiman modules of hollow type is constructed. Applications of this basis to representation theory and other related polynomial spaces are considered.

Subgraph posets and graph reconstruction
We consider 3 (weighted) posets associated with a graph G - the poset P(G) of distinct induced unlabelled subgraphs, the lattice Omega(G) of distinct unlabelled graphs induced by connected partitions, and the poset Q(G) of distinct unlabelled edge-subgraphs. We study these posets given up to isomorphism, and their relation to the reconstruction conjectures. We show that when G is not a star or a disjoint union of edges, P(G) and Omega(G) can be constructed from each other. The result implies that trees are reconstructible from their abstract bond lattice. We present many results on the reconstruction questions about the chromatic symmetric function and the symmetric Tutte polynomial. In particular, we show that the symmetric Tutte polynomial of a tree can be constructed from its chromatic symmetric function. We classify graphs that are not reconstructible from their abstract edge-subgraph posets, and further show that the families presented here are the only graphs not Q-reconstructible if and only if the edge reconstruction conjecture is true. Let f be a bijection from the set of all unlabelled graphs to itself such that for all unlabelled graphs G and H, hom(G,H) = hom(f(G), f(H)). We conjecture that f is an identity map. We show that this conjecture is weaker than the edge reconstruction conjecture. Our conjecture is motivated by homomorphism cancellation results due to Lovász.

We review the relation between the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions and the multiple zeta values, and then discuss a commutative diagram involving the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions, the Hopf algebra dual NSym of QSym, and the Hopf algebras of rooted trees and planar rooted trees as defined by Kreimer and Foissy respectively.
On distinguishing trees by their chromatic symmetric functions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 115 (2008), pp. 237-253 • View PublicationBIB
Let $T$ be an unrooted tree. The \emph{chromatic symmetric function} $X_T$, introduced by Stanley, is a sum of monomial symmetric functions corresponding to proper colorings of $T$. The \emph{subtree polynomial} $S_T$, first considered under a different name by Chaudhary and Gordon, is the bivariate generating function for subtrees of $T$ by their numbers of edges and leaves. We prove that $S_T = <Φ,X_T>$, where $<\cdot,\cdot>$ is the Hall inner product on symmetric functions and $Φ$ is a certain symmetric function that does not depend on $T$. Thus the chromatic symmetric function is a stronger isomorphism invariant than the subtree polynomial. As a corollary, the path and degree sequences of a tree can be obtained from its chromatic symmetric function. As another application, we exhibit two infinite families of trees (\emph{spiders} and some \emph{caterpillars}), and one family of unicyclic graphs (\emph{squids}) whose members are determined completely by their chromatic symmetric functions.

Balanced Symmetric Functions over $GF(p)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Under mild conditions on $n,p$, we give a lower bound on the number of $n$-variable balanced symmetric polynomials over finite fields $GF(p)$, where $p$ is a prime number. The existence of nonlinear balanced symmetric polynomials is an immediate corollary of this bound. Furthermore, we conjecture that $X(2^t,2^{t+1}l-1)$ are the only nonlinear balanced elementary symmetric polynomials over GF(2), where $X(d,n)=\sum_{i_1<i_2<...<i_d}x_{i_1} x_{i_2}... x_{i_d}$, and we prove various results in support of this conjecture.

q-Eulerian Polynomials: Excedance Number and Major index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this research announcement we present a new q-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents or their number of excedances. Our q-Eulerian polynomials are the enumerators for the joint distribution of the excedance statistic and the major index. There is a vast literature on q-Eulerian polynomials which involve other combinations of Mahonian and Eulerian permutation statistics, but the combination of major index and excedance number seems to have been completely overlooked until now. We use symmetric function theory to prove our formula. In particular, we prove a symmetric function version of our formula, which involves an intriguing new class of symmetric functions. We also present connections with representations of the symmetric group on the homology of a poset recently introduced by Björner and Welker and on the cohomology of the toric variety associated with the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group, studied by Procesi, Stanley, Stembridge, Dolgachev and Lunts.

Symmetric functions, parabolic category O and the Springer fiber

We prove that the center of a regular block of parabolic category O for the general linear Lie algebra is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of a corresponding Springer fiber. This was conjectured by Khovanov. We also find presentations for the centers of singular blocks, which are cohomology algebras of Spaltenstein varieties.
