For any $r\geq 1$ and $\mathbf{n} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq0}^r \setminus \{\mathbf0\}$ we construct a poset $W_{\mathbf{n}}$ called a 2-associahedron. The 2-associahedra arose in symplectic geometry, where they are expected to control maps between Fukaya categories of different symplectic manifolds. We prove that the completion $\widehat{W_{\mathbf{n}}}$ is an abstract polytope of dimension $|\mathbf{n}|+r-3$. There are forgetful maps $W_{\mathbf{n}} \to K_r$, where $K_r$ is the $(r-2)$-dimensional associahedron, and the 2-associahedra specialize to the associahedra (in two ways) and to the multiplihedra. In an appendix, we work out the 2- and 3-dimensional associahedra in detail.

Let $λ$ be a symplectic partition, denote Jord^{bp}($λ$) the set of even positive integers i which appear in $λ$, and let a map $ε:Jord^{bp}(λ) \to {\pm 1}$. The generalized Springer's correspondence associates to $(λ,ε)$ an irreducible representation $ρ(λ,ε)$ of some Weyl group. We can also define a representation $\underlineρ(λ,ε)$ of the same Weyl group, in general reducible. Roughly speaking, $ρ(λ,ε)$ is the representation of the Weyl group in the top cohomology group of some variety and $\underlineρ$ is the representation in the sum of all the cohomology groups of the same variety. The representation $\underlineρ$ decomposes as a direct sum of $ρ(λ',ε')$ with some multiplicities, where $(λ',ε')$ describes the pairs similar to $(λ,ε)$. It is well know that $(λ,ε)$ appears in this decomposition with multiplicity one and is minimal in this decomposition. That is, if $(λ',ε')$ appears, we have $λ'>λ$ or $(λ',ε')=(λ,ε)$. Assuming that $λ$ has only even parts, we prove that there exists also a maximal pair $(λ^{max},ε^{max})$. That is $4(λ^{max},ε^{max})$ appears with positive multiplicity (in fact one) and, if $(λ',ε')$ appears, we have $λ^{max}>λ'$ or $(λ',ε')=(λ^{max},ε^{max})$.

We prove that when $q$ is a power of $2$, every complex irreducible representation of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be defined over the real numbers, that is, all Frobenius-Schur indicators are 1. We also obtain a generating function for the sum of the degrees of the unipotent characters of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$, or of $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1, \mathbb{F}_q)$, for any prime power $q$.

We define the Barbasch-Evens-Magyar varieties. We show they are isomorphic to the smooth varieties defined in [D.~Barbasch-S.~Evens '94] that map generically finitely to symmetric orbit closures, thereby giving resolutions of singularities in certain cases. Our definition parallels [P.~Magyar '98]'s construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties [H.~C.~Hansen '73, M.~Demazure '74]. From this alternative viewpoint, one deduces a graphical description in type $A$, stratification into closed subvarieties of the same kind, and determination of the torus-fixed points. Moreover, we explain how these manifolds inherit a natural symplectic structure with Hamiltonian torus action. We then express the moment polytope in terms of the moment polytope of a Bott-Samelson variety.

The cage problem asks for the smallest number $c(k,g)$ of vertices in a $k$-regular graph of girth $g$ and graphs meeting this bound are known as cages. While cages are known to exist for all integers $k \ge 2$ and $g \ge 3$, the exact value of $c(k, g)$ is known only for some small values of $k, g$ and three infinite families where $g \in \{6, 8, 12\}$ and $k - 1$ is a prime power. These infinite families come from the incidence graphs of generalized polygons. Some of the best known upper bounds on $c(k,g)$ for $g \in \{6, 8, 12\}$ have been obtained by constructing small regular induced subgraphs of these cages. In this paper, we first use the Expander Mixing Lemma to give a general lower bound on the size of an induced $k$-regular subgraph of a regular bipartite graph in terms of the second largest eigenvalue of the host graph. We use this bound to show that the known construction of $(k,6)$-graphs using Baer subplanes of the Desarguesian projective plane is the best possible. For generalized quadrangles and hexagons, our bounds are new. In particular, we improve the known lower bound on the size of a $q$-regular induced subgraphs of the classical generalized quadrangle $\mathsf{Q}(4,q)$ and show that the known constructions are asymptotically sharp. For prime powers $q$, we also improve the known upper bounds on $c(q,8)$ and $c(q,12)$ by giving new geometric constructions of $q$-regular induced subgraphs in the symplectic generalized quadrangle $\mathsf{W}(3,q)$ and the split Cayley hexagon $\mathsf{H}(q)$, respectively. Our constructions show that \[c(q,8) \le 2(q^3 - q\sqrt{q} - q)\] for $q$ an even power of a prime, and \[c(q, 12) \le 2(q^5 - 3q^3)\] for all prime powers $q$. For $q \in \{3,4,5\}$ we also give a computer classification of all $q$-regular induced subgraphs of the classical generalized quadrangles of order $q$.

We give a purely combinatorial proof of the positivity of the stabilized forms of the generalized exponents associated to each classical root system. In finite type A_{n-1}, we rederive the description of the generalized exponents in terms of crystal graphs without using the combinatorics of semistandard tableaux or the charge statistic. In finite type C_n, we obtain a combinatorial description of the generalized exponents based on the so-called distinguished vertices in crystals of type A_{2n-1}, which we also connect to symplectic King tableaux. This gives a combinatorial proof of the positivity of Lusztig t-analogues associated to zero weight spaces in the irreducible representations of symplectic Lie algebras. We also present three applications of our combinatorial formula, and discuss some implications to relating two type C branching rules. Our methods are expected to extend to the orthogonal types.

The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that computes Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a Pfaffian formula of geometric interest for $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ when $z$ is a fixed-point-free version of a Grassmannian permutation. We also classify the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions that are single Schur $P$-functions, and show that the decomposition of $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ into Schur $P$-functions is unitriangular with respect to dominance order on strict partitions. These results and proofs mirror previous work by the authors related to the orthogonal group action on the type A flag variety.

We examine the relationship between the (double) Schubert polynomials of Billey-Haiman and Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse and the (double) theta and eta polynomials of Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis and Wilson from the perspective of Weyl group invariants. We obtain generators for the kernel of the natural map from the corresponding ring of Schubert polynomials to the (equivariant) cohomology ring of symplectic and orthogonal flag manifolds.

Let $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ be the odd-symplectic Grassmannian. Property $\mathcal{O}$, introduced by Galkin, Golyshev and Iritani for arbitrary complex, Fano manifolds $X$, is a statement about the eigenvalues of the linear operator obtained by the quantum multiplication by the anticanonical class of $X$. We prove that property $\mathcal{O}$ holds in the case when $X= \mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ is an odd-symplectic Grassmannian. The proof uses the combinatorics of the recently found quantum Chevalley formula for $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$, together with the Perron-Frobenius theory of nonnegative matrices.

The odd symplectic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}:=\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ parametrizes $k$ dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$ which are isotropic with respect to a general (necessarily degenerate) symplectic form. The odd symplectic group acts on $\mathrm{IG}$ with two orbits, and $\mathrm{IG}$ is itself a smooth Schubert variety in the submaximal isotropic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+2)$. We use the technique of curve neighborhoods to prove a Chevalley formula in the equivariant quantum cohomology of $\mathrm{IG}$, i.e. a formula to multiply a Schubert class by the Schubert divisor class. This generalizes a formula of Pech in the case $k=2$, and it gives an algorithm to calculate any multiplication in the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.
A $q$-deformation of the symplectic Schur functions and the Berele insertion algorithm

A randomisation of the Berele insertion algorithm is proposed, where the insertion of a letter to a symplectic Young tableau leads to a distribution over the set of symplectic Young tableaux. Berele's algorithm provides a bijection between words from an alphabet and a symplectic Young tableau along with a recording oscillating tableau. The randomised version of the algorithm is achieved by introducing a parameter $0 < q < 1$. The classic Berele algorithm corresponds to letting the parameter $q \to 0$. The new version provides a probabilistic framework that allows to prove Littlewood-type identities for a $q$-deformation of the symplectic Schur functions. These functions correspond to multilevel extensions of the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials. Finally, we show that when both the original and the $q$-modified insertion algorithms are applied to a random word then the shape of the symplectic Young tableau evolves as a Markov chain on the set of partitions.
Enumerating the symplectic Dellac configurations
Fang and Fourier defined the symplectic Dellac configurations in order to parametrize the torus fixed points of the symplectic degenerated flag varieties, and conjectured that their numbers are the elements of a sequence of integers (1, 2, 10, 98, 1594, ...) which appears in the study by Randrianarivony and Zeng of the median Euler numbers. In this paper, we prove the conjecture by considering a combinatorial interpretation of these integers in terms of the surjective pistols (which form a well-known combinatorial model of the Genocchi numbers), and constructing an appropriate surjection from the symplectic Dellac configurations to the surjective pistols.

The wavefunction of the free-fermion six-vertex model was found to give a natural realization of the Tokuyama combinatorial formula for the Schur polynomials by Bump-Brubaker-Friedberg. Recently, we studied the correspondence between the dual version of the wavefunction and the Schur polynomials, which gave rise to another combinatorial formula. In this paper, we extend the analysis to the reflecting boundary condition, and show the exact correspondence between the dual wavefunction and the symplectic Schur functions. This gives a dual version of the integrable model realization of the symplectic Schur functions by Ivanov. We also generalize to the correspondence between the wavefunction, the dual wavefunction of the six-vertex model and the factorial symplectic Schur functions by the inhomogeneous generalization of the model.

In this paper, we present a uniform formula for the integration of polynomials over the unitary, orthogonal, and symplectic groups using Weingarten calculus. From this description, we further simplify the integration formulas and give several optimizations for various cases. We implemented the optimized Weingarten calculus in Maple in a package called IntHaar for all three compact groups. Here we will discuss its functions, provide instructions for the package, and produce some examples of computed integrals.
Extensions of character formulas by the Littlewood decomposition
In 2015, the author proved combinatorially character formulas expressing sums of the (formal) dimensions of irreducible representations of symplectic groups, refining some works of Nekrasov and Okounkov, Han, King, and Westbury. In this article, we obtain generalizations of these character formulas, by using a bijection on integer partitions, namely the Littlewood decomposition, for which we prove new properties. As applications, we derive signed generating functions for subsets of integer partitions, and new hook length formulas.

In this article, we describe symplectic and complex toric spaces associated to the five regular convex polyhedra. The regular tetrahedron and the cube are rational and simple, the regular octahedron is not simple, the regular dodecahedron is not rational and the regular icosahedron is neither simple nor rational. We remark that the last two cases cannot be treated via standard toric geometry.

Feit and Fine derived a generating function for the number of ordered pairs of commuting n by n matrices over the finite field F_q. This has been reproved and studied by Bryan and Morrison from the viewpoint of motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory. In this note we give a new proof of the Feit-Fine result, and generalize it to the Lie algebra of finite unitary groups and to the Lie algebra of odd characteristic finite symplectic groups. We extract some asymptotic information from these generating functions. Finally, we derive generating functions for the number of commuting nilpotent elements for the Lie algebras of the finite general linear and unitary groups, and of odd characteristic symplectic groups.
Some conjectures on the asymptotic behavior of Gromov-Witten invariants
The purpose of this note is to share some observations and speculations concerning the asymptotic behavior of Gromov-Witten invariants. They may be indicative of some deep phenomena in symplectic topology that in full generality are outside of the reach of current techniques. On the other hand, many interesting cases can perhaps be treated via combinatorial techniques.

The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.
A relative $m$-cover of a Hermitian surface is a relative hemisystem

An $m$-cover of the Hermitian surface $H(3,q^2)$ of $PG(3,q^2)$ is a set $\mathcal{S}$ of lines of $H(3,q^2)$ such that every point of $H(3,q^2)$ lies on exactly $m$ lines of $\mathcal{S}$, and $0<m<q+1$. Segre (1965) proved that if $q$ is odd, then $m=(q+1)/2$, and called such a set $\mathcal{S}$ of lines a hemisystem. Penttila and Williford (2011) introduced the notion of a relative hemisystem: a set of lines $\mathcal{R}$ of $H(3,q^2)$, $q$ even, disjoint from a symplectic subgeometry $W(3,q)$ such that every point of $H(3,q^2)\setminus W(3,q)$ lies on exactly $q/2$ elements of $\mathcal{R}$. In this paper, we provide an analogue of Segre's result by introducing relative $m$-covers of $H(3,q^2)$ with respect to a symplectic subgeometry and proving that $m$ must necessarily be $q/2$.
