Random Fibonacci Words via Clone Schur Functions
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 14 (2026) e15 • View PublicationBIB
We study positivity and probabilistic properties arising from the Young--Fibonacci lattice $\mathbb{YF}$, a 1-differential poset on binary (Fibonacci) words of 1's and 2's, graded by digit sum. Building on Okada's theory of clone Schur functions (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 346 (1994), 549--568), we define clone coherent measures on $\mathbb{YF}$ that generate random Fibonacci words of increasing length; unlike for the Young lattice (powered by the classical Schur functions), clone coherent measures are generally not extremal on $\mathbb{YF}$. Our first main result is a complete characterization of Fibonacci positive specializations -- parameter sequences which yield positive clone Schur functions on $\mathbb{YF}$. Second, we connect Fibonacci positivity with: (i) total positivity of tridiagonal matrices; (ii) Stieltjes moment sequences; (iii) the combinatorics of set partitions; and (iv) families of univariate orthogonal polynomials from the (q-)Askey scheme. We further link moment sequences of orthogonal polynomials to combinatorial structures on Fibonacci words, a connection that may be of independent interest. Third, we analyze scaling limits of the induced random words, obtaining stick-breaking-type limits (linked to GEM laws), new dependent stick-breaking limits, and limits supported on the discrete part of the Martin boundary of $\mathbb{YF}$. These results significantly extend the asymptotics of the Plancherel measure on $\mathbb{YF}$ proved by Gnedin--Kerov (Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 129 (2000), 433--446). Finally, we prove Cauchy-type identities for clone Schur functions with quadridiagonal-determinant right-hand side (in contrast to the product form for classical Schur functions), and construct models of random permutations and involutions from Fibonacci-positive specializations together with a Robinson--Schensted correspondence adapted to $\mathbb{YF}$.
Totally positive skew-symmetric matrices
A matrix is totally positive if all of its minors are positive. This notion of positivity coincides with the type A version of Lusztig's more general total positivity in reductive real-split algebraic groups. Since skew-symmetric matrices always have nonpositive entries, they are not totally positive in the classical sense. The space of skew-symmetric matrices is an affine chart of the orthogonal Grassmannian $\mathrm{OGr}(n,2n)$. Thus, we define a skew-symmetric matrix to be totally positive if it lies in the totally positive orthogonal Grassmannian. We provide a positivity criterion for these matrices in terms of a fixed collection of minors, and show that their Pfaffians have a remarkable sign pattern. The totally positive orthogonal Grassmannian is a CW cell complex and is subdivided into Richardson cells. We introduce a method to determine which cell a given point belongs to in terms of its associated matroid.

The Double Almost-Riordan Arrays and Their Sequence Characterization, Compression, and Total Positivity
In this paper, we define double almost-Riordan arrays and find that the set of all double almost-Riordan arrays forms a group, called the double almost-Riordan group. We also obtain the sequence characteristics of double almost-Riordan arrays and give the production matrices for double almost-Riordan arrays. We define the compression of double almost-Riordan arrays and present their sequence characterization. Finally we give a characteristic for the total positivity of double Riordan arrays, by using which we discuss the total positivity for compressed double almost-Riordan arrays.

The monoid representation of upho posets and total positivity
We show that all totally positive formal power series with integer coefficients and constant term $1$ are precisely the rank-generating functions of Schur-positive upho posets, thereby resolving the main conjecture proposed by Gao, Guo, Seetharaman, and Seidel. To achieve this, we construct a bijection between finitary colored upho posets and atomic, left-cancellative, invertible-free monoids, which restricts to a correspondence between $\mathbb{N}$-graded colored upho posets and left-cancellative homogeneous monoids. Furthermore, we introduce semi-upho posets and develop a convolution operation on colored upho posets with colored semi-upho posets within this monoid-theoretic framework.
On two notions of total positivity for generalized partial flag varieties of classical Lie types
For Grassmannians, Lusztig's notion of total positivity coincides with positivity of the Plucker coordinates. This coincidence underpins the rich interaction between matroid theory, tropical geometry, and the theory of total positivity. Bloch and Karp furthermore characterized the (type A) partial flag varieties for which the two notions of positivity similarly coincide. We characterize the symplectic (type C) and odd-orthogonal (type B) partial flag varieties for which Lusztig's total positivity coincides with Plucker positivity.

From total positivity to pure free resolutions
Using the Jacobi-Trudi identity as a base, we establish parallels between the theory of totally positive integer sequences and Koszul algebras. We then focus on the case of quadric hypersurface rings and use this parallel to construct new analogues of Schur modules. We investigate some of their Lie-theoretic properties (and in more detail in a followup article) and use them to construct pure free resolutions for quadric hypersurface rings which are completely analogous to the construction given by Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman in the case of polynomial rings.

Total Positivity of Quasi-Riordan Arrays
In this paper the total positivity of quasi-Riordan arrays is investigated with use of the sequence characterization of quasi-Riordan arrays. Due to the correlation between quasi-Riordan arrays and Riordan arrays, this study is an in-depth discussion of the total positivity of Riordan arrays.

Total Positivity of Almost-Riordan Arrays
In this paper we study the total positivity of almost-Riordan arrays $(d(t)|\, g(t), f(t))$ and establish its necessary conditions and sufficient conditions, particularly, for some well used formal power series $d(t)$. We present a semidirect product of an almost-array and use it to transfer a total positivity problem for an almost-Riordan array to the total positivity problem for a quasi-Riordan array. We find the sequence characterization of total positivity of the almost-Riordan arrays. The production matrix $J$ of an almost-Riordan array $(d|\, g,f)$ is presented so that $J$ is totally positive implies the total positivity of both the almost-Riordan array $(d|\, g,f)$ and the Riordan array $(g,f)$. We also present a counterexample to illustrate that this sufficient condition is not necessary. If the production matrix $J$ is tridiagonal, then the expressions of its principal minors are given. By using expressions, we find a sufficient and necessary condition of the total positivity of almost-Riordan arrays with tridiagonal production matrices. A numerous examples are given to demonstrate our results.
Sufficient conditions for total positivity, compounds, and Dodgson condensation
A $n$-by-$n$ matrix is called totally positive ($TP$) if all its minors are positive and $TP_k$ if all of its $k$-by-$k$ submatrices are $TP$. For an arbitrary totally positive matrix or $TP_k$ matrix, we investigate if the $r$th compound ($1<r<n$) is in turn $TP$ or $TP_k$, and demonstrate a strong negative resolution in general. Focus is then shifted to Dodgson's algorithm for calculating the determinant of a generic matrix, and we analyze whether the associated condensed matrices are possibly totally positive or $TP_k$. We also show that all condensed matrices associated with a $TP$ Hankel matrix are $TP$.

Total positivity and two inequalities by Athanasiadis and Tzanaki
Let $Δ$ be a $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex and $h^ Δ= (h_0^ Δ,\ldots, h_d^ Δ)$ its $h$-vector. For a face uniform subdivision operation ${\mathcal F}$ we write $Δ_{\mathcal F}$ for the subdivided complex and $H_{\mathcal F}$ for the matrix such that $h^ {Δ_{\mathcal F}} = H_{\mathcal F} h^ Δ$. In connection with the real rootedness of symmetric decompositions Athanasiadis and Tzanaki studied for strictly positive $h$-vectors the inequalities $\frac{h_0^ Δ}{h_1^ Δ} \leq \frac{h_1^Δ}{h_{d-1}^ Δ} \leq \cdots \leq \frac{h_d^ Δ}{h_0^Δ}$ and $\frac{h_1^Δ}{h_{d-1}^Δ} \geq \cdots \geq \frac{h_{d-2}^Δ}{h_2^Δ} \geq \frac{h_{d-1}^Δ}{h_1^Δ}$. In this paper we show that if the inequalities holds for a simplicial complex $Δ$ and $H_{\mathcal F}$ is TP$_2$ (all entries and two minors are non-negative) then the inequalities hold for $Δ_{\mathcal F}$. We prove that if ${\mathcal F}$ is the barycentric subdivision then $H_{\mathcal F}$ is TP$_2$. If ${\mathcal F}$ is the $r$\textsuperscript{th}-edgewise subdivision then work of Diaconis and Fulman shows $H_{\mathcal F}$ is TP$_2$. Indeed in this case by work of Mao and Wang $H_{\mathcal F}$ is even TP.

Acyclic matchings on Bruhat intervals and applications to total positivity
The existence of acyclic complete matchings on the face poset of a regular CW complex implies that the underlying topological space of the CW complex is contractible by discrete Morse theory. In this paper, we construct explicitly acyclic complete matchings on any non-trivial Bruhat interval $[v,w]$ based on any reflection order on the Coxeter group $W$. We then apply this combinatorial result to regular CW complexes arising from the theory of total positivity. As an application, we show that the totally nonnegative Springer fibers are contractible. This verifies a conjecture of Lusztig. As another application, we show that the totally nonnegative fibers of the natural projection from full flag varieties to partial flag varieties are contractible. This leads to a much simplified proof of the regularity property on totally nonnegative partial flag varieties compared to the proofs by Galashin-Karp-Lam and in our earlier work.
Lattice paths and branched continued fractions. III. Generalizations of the Laguerre, rook and Lah polynomials
We introduce a triangular array $\widehat{\sf L}^{(α)}$ of 5-variable homogeneous polynomials that enumerate Laguerre digraphs (digraphs in which each vertex has out-degree 0 or 1 and in-degree 0 or 1) with separate weights for peaks, valleys, double ascents, double descents, and loops. These polynomials generalize the classical Laguerre polynomials as well as the rook and Lah polynomials. We show that this triangular array is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is Hankel-totally positive, under suitable restrictions on the values given to the indeterminates. This implies, in particular, the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the monic unsigned univariate Laguerre polyomials. Our proof uses the method of production matrices as applied to exponential Riordan arrays. Our main technical lemma concerns the total positivity of a large class of quadridiagonal production matrices; it generalizes the tridiagonal comparison theorem. In some cases these polynomials are given by a branched continued fraction. Our constructions are motivated in part by recurrences for the multiple orthogonal polynomials associated to weights based on modified Bessel functions of the first kind $I_α$.

Total positivity for matroid Schubert varieties
We define the totally nonnegative matroid Schubert variety $\mathcal Y_V$ of a linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb R^n$. We show that $\mathcal Y_V$ is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, with strata indexed by pairs of acyclic flats of the oriented matroid of $V$. This closely resembles the regularity theorem for totally nonnegative generalized flag varieties. As a corollary, we obtain a regular CW structure on the real matroid Schubert variety of $V$.

Total positivity from a kind of lattice paths
Total positivity of matrices is deeply studied and plays an important role in various branches of mathematics. The main purpose of this paper is to study total positivity of a matrix $M=[M_{n,k}]_{n,k}$ generated by the weighted lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ from the origin $(0,0)$ to the point $(k,n)$ consisting of types of steps: $(0,1)$ and $(1,t+i)$ for $0\leq i\leq \ell$, where each step $(0,1)$ from height~$n-1$ gets the weight~$b_n(\textbf{y})$ and each step $(1,t+i)$ from height~$n-t-i$ gets the weight $a_n^{(i)}(\textbf{x})$. Using an algebraic method, we prove that the $\textbf{x}$-total positivity of the weight matrix $[a_i^{(i-j)}(\textbf{x})]_{i,j}$ implies that of $M$. Furthermore, using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma, we obtain that both $M$ and the Toeplitz matrix of each row sequence of $M$ with $t\geq1$ are $\textbf{x}$-totally positive under the following three cases respectively: (1) $\ell=1$, (2) $\ell=2$ and restrictions for $a_n^{(i)}$, (3) general $\ell$ and both $a^{(i)}_n$ and $b_n$ are independent of $n$. In addition, for the case (3), we show that the matrix $M$ is a Riordan array, present its explicit formula and prove total positivity of the Toeplitz matrix of the each column of $M$. In particular, from the results for Toeplitz-total positivity, we also obtain the Pólya frequency and log-concavity of the corresponding sequence. Finally, as applications, we in a unified manner establish total positivity and the Toeplitz-total positivity for many well-known combinatorial triangles, including the Pascal triangle, the Pascal square, the Delannoy triangle, the Delannoy square, the signless Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Legendre-Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Jacobi-Stirling triangle of the first kind, the Brenti's recursive matrix, and so on.

Symmetric Toda, gradient flows, and tridiagonalization
Published in Phys. D 450 (2023), Paper No. 133766, 10 pages • View PublicationBIB
The Toda lattice (1967) is a Hamiltonian system given by $n$ points on a line governed by an exponential potential. Flaschka (1974) showed that the Toda lattice is integrable by interpreting it as a flow on the space of symmetric tridiagonal $n\times n$ matrices, while Moser (1975) showed that it is a gradient flow on a projective space. The symmetric Toda flow of Deift, Li, Nanda, and Tomei (1986) generalizes the Toda lattice flow from tridiagonal to all symmetric matrices. They showed the flow is integrable, in the classical sense of having $d$ integrals in involution on its $2d$-dimensional phase space. The system may be viewed as integrable in other ways as well. Firstly, Symes (1980, 1982) solved it explicitly via $QR$-factorization and conjugation. Secondly, Deift, Li, Nanda, and Tomei (1986) 'tridiagonalized' the system into a family of tridiagonal Toda lattices which are solvable and integrable. In this paper we derive their tridiagonalization procedure in a natural way using the fact that the symmetric Toda flow is diffeomorphic to a twisted gradient flow on a flag variety, which may then be decomposed into flows on a product of Grassmannians. These flows may in turn be embedded into projective spaces via Plücker embeddings, and mapped back to tridiagonal Toda lattice flows using Moser's construction. In addition, we study the tridiagonalized flows projected onto a product of permutohedra, using the twisted moment map of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990). These ideas are facilitated in a natural way by the theory of total positivity, building on our previous work (2023).

Richardson varieties, projected Richardson varieties and positroid varieties
This is a survey article on Richardson varieties and their combinatorics. A Richardson variety is the intersection, inside the flag manifold GL_n/B_+, of a Schubert cell (B_- u B_+)/B_+ and an opposite Schubert cell (B_+ w B_+)/B_+ (or the similar intersection of Schubert varieties). In this survey, we provide an overview of what is known about (1) homogeneous coordinate rings of Richardson varieties, their bases and degenerations (2) parametrizations of Richardson varieties using Bott-Samelson varieties (3) Deodhar's decompositions of the flag manifold and of Richardson varieties within it and (4) total positivity in the flag manifold. We also provide an overview of the combinatorics of positroid varieties, their relations to Richardson varieties, and how they are parametrized using plabic graphs. Most of this survey is an overview of other authors' work over the last forty years, but there are also some minor original results: For example, that coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are UFD's (Corollary 3.23), that the Deodhar decomposition is not a stratification in Lie type A (Section 4.3) and explicit descriptions of the Deodhar decomposition in terms of ranks of submatrices (Section 4.4).

Total positivity of some polynomial matrices that enumerate labeled trees and forests. II. Rooted labeled trees and partial functional digraphs
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 157, 102703 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbfφ)$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, φ_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbfφ$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Total positivity in twisted product of flag varieties
We show that the totally nonnegative part of the twisted product of flag varieties of a Kac-Moody group admits a cellular decomposition, and the closure of each cell is a topological manifold with boundary. We also establish explicit parameterizations of each totally positive cell. In the special cases of double flag varieties and braid varieties, we show that the totally nonnegative parts are regular CW complexes homeomorphic to closed balls. Moreover, we prove that the link of any totally nonnegative double Bruhat cell in a reductive group is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, solving an open problem of Fomin and Zelevinsky.

One-skeleton posets of Bruhat interval polytopes
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 430 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Introduced by Kodama and Williams, Bruhat interval polytopes are generalized permutohedra closely connected to the study of torus orbit closures and total positivity in Schubert varieties. We show that the 1-skeleton posets of these polytopes are lattices and classify when the polytopes are simple, thereby resolving open problems and conjectures of Fraser, of Lee--Masuda, and of Lee--Masuda--Park. In particular, we classify when generic torus orbit closures in Schubert varieties are smooth.
