Absorbing time asymptotics in the oriented swap process
Published • View PublicationBIB
The oriented swap process is a natural directed random walk on the symmetric group that can be interpreted as a multi-species version of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) on a finite interval. An open problem from a 2008 paper of Angel, Holroyd, and Romik asks for the limiting distribution of the absorbing time of the process. We resolve this question by proving that this random variable satisfies GOE Tracy-Widom asymptotics. Our starting point is a distributional identity relating the behavior of the oriented swap process to last passage percolation, conjectured in a recent paper of Bisi, Cunden, Gibbons, and Romik. The main technical tool is a shift-invariance principle for multi-species TASEPs, obtained by exploiting recent results of Borodin, Gorin, and Wheeler for the stochastic colored six-vertex model.

Transition between characters of classical groups, decomposition of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and last passage percolation
Published in Adv. Math., 404-B, 108453 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ and between characters of ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We identify the first family as a one-parameter specialization of Koornwinder polynomials, for which we thus provide a novel combinatorial structure; on the other hand, the second family appears to be new. We next develop a method of Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern decomposition to establish identities between all these polynomials that, in the case of irreducible characters, can be viewed as branching rules. Through these formulas we connect orthogonal and symplectic characters, and more generally the interpolating polynomials, to LPP models with various symmetries, thus going beyond the link with classical Schur polynomials originally found by Baik and Rains (Duke Math. J., 2001). Taking the scaling limit of the LPP models, we finally provide an explanation of why the Tracy-Widom GOE and GSE distributions from random matrix theory admit formulations in terms of both Fredholm determinants and Fredholm Pfaffians.

On the longest common subsequence of independent random permutations invariant under conjugation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bukh and Zhou conjectured that the expectation of the length of the longest common subsequence of two i.i.d random permutations of size $n$ is greater than $\sqrt{n}$. We prove in this paper that there exists a universal constant $n_1$ such that their conjecture is satisfied for any pair of i.i.d random permutations of size greater than $n_1$ with distribution invariant under conjugation. We prove also that asymptotically, this expectation is at least of order $2\sqrt{n}$ which is the asymptotic behaviour of the uniform setting. More generally, in the case where the laws of the two permutations are not necessarily the same, we gibe a lower bound for the expectation. In particular, we prove that if one of the permutations is invariant under conjugation and with a good control of the expectation of the number of its cycles, the limiting fluctuations of the length of the longest common subsequence are of Tracy-Widom type. This result holds independently of the law of the second permutation.

Random polymers via orthogonal Whittaker and symplectic Schur functions
This thesis deals with some $(1+1)$-dimensional lattice path models from the KPZ universality class: the directed random polymer with inverse-gamma weights (known as log-gamma polymer) and its zero temperature degeneration, i.e. the last passage percolation model, with geometric or exponential waiting times. We consider three path geometries: point-to-line, point-to-half-line, and point-to-line with paths restricted to stay in a half-plane. Through exact formulas, we establish new connections between integrable probabilistic models and the ubiquitous Whittaker and Schur functions. More in detail, via the use of A. N. Kirillov's geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, we compute the Laplace transform of the polymer partition functions in the above geometries in terms of orthogonal Whittaker functions. In the case of the first two geometries we also provide multiple contour integral formulas. For the corresponding last passage percolation problems, we obtain new formulas in terms of symplectic Schur functions, both directly via RSK on polygonal arrays and via zero temperature limit from the log-gamma polymer formulas. As scaling limits of the point-to-line and point-to-half-line models with exponential waiting times, we derive Sasamoto's Fredholm determinant formula for the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution, as well as the one-point marginal distribution of the ${\rm Airy}_{2\to1}$ process.

Generalizations of TASEP in discrete and continuous inhomogeneous space
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a rich new class of exactly solvable particle systems generalizing the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP). Our particle systems can be thought of as new exactly solvable examples of tandem queues, directed first- or last-passage percolation models, or Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type systems with random input. One of the novel features of the particle systems is the presence of spatial inhomogeneity which can lead to the formation of traffic jams. For systems with special step-like initial data, we find explicit limit shapes, describe hydrodynamic evolution, and obtain asymptotic fluctuation results which put the systems into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. At a critical scaling around a traffic jam in the continuous space TASEP, we observe deformations of the Tracy-Widom distribution and the extended Airy kernel, revealing the finer structure of this novel type of phase transitions. A homogeneous version of a discrete space system we consider is a one-parameter deformation of the geometric last-passage percolation, and we obtain extensions of the limit shape parabola and the corresponding asymptotic fluctuation results. The exact solvability and asymptotic behavior results are powered by a new nontrivial connection to Schur measures and processes.

The periodic Schur process and free fermions at finite temperature
Published in Math Phys Anal Geom (2019) 22: 3 • View PublicationBIB
We revisit the periodic Schur process introduced by Borodin in 2007. Our contribution is threefold. First, we provide a new simpler derivation of its correlation functions via the free fermion formalism. In particular, we shall see that the process becomes determinantal by passing to the grand canonical ensemble, which gives a physical explanation to Borodin's "shift-mixing" trick. Second, we consider the edge scaling limit in the simplest nontrivial case, corresponding to a deformation of the poissonized Plancherel measure on partitions. We show that the edge behavior is described, in a certain crossover regime different from that for the bulk, by the universal finite-temperature Airy kernel, which was previously encountered by Johansson and Le Doussal et al. in other models, and whose extreme value statistics interpolates between the Tracy-Widom GUE and the Gumbel distributions. We also define and prove convergence for a stationary extension of our model. Finally, we compute the correlation functions for a variant of the periodic Schur process involving strict partitions, Schur's P and Q functions, and neutral fermions.

Longest increasing paths with gaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a variant of the continuous and discrete Ulam-Hammersley problems: we study the maximal length of an increasing path through a Poisson point process (or a Bernoulli point process) with the restriction that there must be minimal gaps between abscissae and ordinates of successive points of the path. For both cases (continuous and discrete) our approach rely on couplings with well-studied models: respectively the classical Ulam-Hammersley problem and last-passage percolation with geometric weights. Thanks to these couplings we obtain explicit limiting shapes in both settings. We also establish that, as in the classical Ulam-Hammersley problem, the fluctuations around the mean are given by the Tracy-Widom distribution.

Monotonous subsequences and the descent process of invariant random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known from the work of Baik, Deift, and Johansson [1999] that we have Tracy-Widom fluctuations for the longest increasing subsequence of uniform permutations. In this paper, we prove that this result holds also in the case of the Ewens distribution and more generally for a class of random permutation with distribution invariant under conjugation. Moreover, we obtain the convergence of the first components of the associated Young tableaux to the Airy Ensemble as well as the global convergence to the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp shape. Using similar techniques, we also prove that the limiting descent process of a large class of random permutations is stationary, one-dependent and determinantal.

Half-space Macdonald processes
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 8 (2020) e11 • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysis is considerably harder than their full-space counterparts. We compute moments and Laplace transforms of observables for general half-space Macdonald measures. Introducing new dynamics preserving this class of measures, we relate them to various stochastic processes, in particular the log-gamma polymer in a half-quadrant (they are also related to the stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and the half-space ASEP). For the polymer model, we provide explicit integral formulas for the Laplace transform of the partition function. Non-rigorous saddle point asymptotics yield convergence of the directed polymer free energy to either the Tracy-Widom GOE, GSE or the Gaussian distribution depending on the average size of weights on the boundary.

Probability distributions of multi-species q-TAZRP and ASEP as double cosets of parabolic subgroups
Published in Annales Henri Poincaré, April 2019, 20(4), 1149-1173 • View PublicationBIB
We write explicit contour integral formulas for probability distributions of the multi-species q-TAZRP and the multi-species ASEP starting with q-exchangeable initial conditions. The formulas are equal to the corresponding explicit contour integral formulas for the single-species q-TAZRP ([Korhonen-Lee 2014, Wang-Waugh 2016]) and ASEP [Tracy-Widom 2007], with a factor in front of the integral. For the multi-species q-TAZRP, we use a decomposition theorem for elements of double cosets of parabolic subgroups in a Coxeter group. The set of distinguished double coset representatives with minimal length is viewed as a particle configuration. For the multi-species ASEP we use a more direct proof.
Stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and half-line open ASEP
Published in Duke Math. J. 167, no. 13 (2018), 2457-2529 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space Macdonald processes, as well as two surprising relations. The first relates a special (Hall-Littlewood) case of these measures to the half-space stochastic six-vertex model (which further limits to ASEP) using a Yang-Baxter graphical argument. The second relates certain averages under these measures to their half-space (or Pfaffian) Schur process analogs via a refined Littlewood identity.

Statistical properties of eigenvalues of Laplace-Beltrami operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the eigenvalues of a Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on the set of the symmetric polynomials, where the eigenvalues are expressed in terms of partitions of integers. By assigning partitions with the restricted uniform measure, the restricted Jack measure, the uniform measure or the Plancherel measure, we prove that the global distribution of the eigenvalues is asymptotically a new distribution $μ$, the Gamma distribution, the Gumbel distribution and the Tracy-Widom distribution, respectively. An explicit representation of $μ$ is obtained by a function of independent random variables. We also derive an independent result on random partitions itself: a law of large numbers for the restricted uniform measure. Two open problems are also asked.

Tracy-Widom asymptotics for a random polymer model with gamma-distributed weights
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 20: 1-18 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
We establish Tracy-Widom asymptotics for the partition function of a random polymer model with gamma-distributed weights recently introduced by Seppäläinen. We show that the partition function of this random polymer can be represented within the framework of the geometric RSK correspondence and consequently its law can be expressed in terms of Whittaker functions. This leads to a representation of the law of the partition function which is amenable to asymptotic analysis. In this model, the partition function plays a role analogous to the smallest eigenvalue in the Laguerre unitary ensemble of random matrix theory.

A Central Limit Theorem for the Length of the Longest Common Subsequences in Random Words
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability 2023, Vol. 28, paper no. 3, 1-24 • View PublicationBIB
Let $(X_i)_{i \geq 1}$ and $(Y_i)_{i\geq1}$ be two independent sequences of independent identically distributed random variables taking their values in a common finite alphabet and having the same law. Let $LC_n$ be the length of the longest common subsequences of the two random words $X_1\cdots X_n$ and $Y_1\cdots Y_n$. Under a lower bound assumption on the order of its variance, $LC_n$ is shown to satisfy a central limit theorem. This is in contrast to the limiting distribution of the length of the longest common subsequences in two independent uniform random permutations of $\{1, \dots, n\}$, which is shown to be the Tracy-Widom distribution.

Macdonald processes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald processes are probability measures on sequences of partitions defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and two Macdonald parameters q,t in [0,1). We prove several results about these processes, which include the following. (1) We explicitly evaluate expectations of a rich family of observables for these processes. (2) In the case t=0, we find a Fredholm determinant formula for a q-Laplace transform of the distribution of the last part of the Macdonald-random partition. (3) We introduce Markov dynamics that preserve the class of Macdonald processes and lead to new "integrable" 2d and 1d interacting particle systems. (4) In a large time limit transition, and as q goes to 1, the particles of these systems crystallize on a lattice, and fluctuations around the lattice converge to O'Connell's Whittaker process that describe semi-discrete Brownian directed polymers. (5) This yields a Fredholm determinant for the Laplace transform of the polymer partition function, and taking its asymptotics we prove KPZ universality for the polymer (free energy fluctuation exponent 1/3 and Tracy-Widom GUE limit law). (6) Under intermediate disorder scaling, we recover the Laplace transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. (7) We provide contour integral formulas for a wide array of polymer moments. (8) This results in a new ansatz for solving quantum many body systems such as the delta Bose gas.

Limiting distribution of maximal crossing and nesting of Poissonized random matchings
Published in Annals of Probability 2013, Vol. 41, No. 6, 4359-4406 • View PublicationBIB
The notion of $r$-crossing and $r$-nesting of a complete matching was introduced and a symmetry property was proved by Chen et al. [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 359 (2007) 1555-1575]. We consider random matchings of large size and study their maximal crossing and their maximal nesting. It is known that the marginal distribution of each of them converges to the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution. We show that the maximal crossing and the maximal nesting becomes independent asymptotically, and we evaluate the joint distribution for the Poissonized random matchings explicitly to the first correction term. This leads to an evaluation of the asymptotic of the covariance. Furthermore, we compute the explicit second correction term in the distribution function of two objects: (a) the length of the longest increasing subsequence of Poissonized random permutation and (b) the maximal crossing, and hence also the maximal nesting, of Poissonized random matching.

The Distribution of the Largest Non-trivial Eigenvalues in Families of Random Regular Graphs
Published in Experimental Mathematics 17 (2008), no. 2, 231--244 • View PublicationBIB
Recently Friedman proved Alon's conjecture for many families of d-regular graphs, namely that given any epsilon > 0 `most' graphs have their largest non-trivial eigenvalue at most 2 sqrt{d-1}+epsilon in absolute value; if the absolute value of the largest non-trivial eigenvalue is at most 2 sqrt{d-1} then the graph is said to be Ramanujan. These graphs have important applications in communication network theory, allowing the construction of superconcentrators and nonblocking networks, coding theory and cryptography. As many of these applications depend on the size of the largest non-trivial positive and negative eigenvalues, it is natural to investigate their distributions. We show these are well-modeled by the beta=1 Tracy-Widom distribution for several families. If the observed growth rates of the mean and standard deviation as a function of the number of vertices holds in the limit, then in the limit approximately 52% of d-regular graphs from bipartite families should be Ramanujan, and about 27% from non-bipartite families (assuming the largest positive and negative eigenvalues are independent).

Limiting distributions for a polynuclear growth model with external sources
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the limiting distribution functions for a polynuclear growth model with two external sources, which was considered by Prähofer and Spohn. Depending on the strength of the sources, the limiting distribution functions are either the Tracy-Widom functions of random matrix theory, or a new explicit function which has the special property that its mean is zero. Moreover, we obtain transition functions between pairs of the above distribution functions in suitably scaled limits. There are also similar results for a discrete totally asymmetric exclusion process.

Random vicious walks and random matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.
