Traceability of Connected Domination Critical Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A dominating set in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices of $G$ such that every vertex outside $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. A connected dominating set in $G$ is a dominating set $S$ such that the subgraph $G[S]$ induced by $S$ is connected. The connected domination number of $G$, $γ_c(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a connected dominating set of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-critical if the connected domination number $γ_{c}(G)$ is equal to $k$ and $γ_{c}(G + uv) < k$ for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. Let $ζ$ be the number of cut-vertices of $G$. It is known that if $G$ is a $k$-$γ_{c}$-critical graph, then $G$ has at most $k - 2$ cut-vertices, that is $ζ\le k - 2$. In this paper, for $k \ge 4$ and $0 \le ζ\le k - 2$, we show that every $k$-$γ_{c}$-critical graph with $ζ$ cut-vertices has a hamiltonian path if and only if $k - 3 \le ζ\le k - 2$.

Explicit Combinatorial Formulas for Some Irreducible Characters of the $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-module of multivariate diagonal harmonics
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for some irreducible components of $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-modules of multivariate diagonal harmonics. To this end we introduce a new path combinatorial object $T_{n,s}$ allowing us to give the formula directly in terms of Schur functions. This paper also contains formulas written in terms of Schur functions in the $q$ and $t$ variables for special cases of $\nabla(e_n)$, $\nabla^r(e_n)$ and $Δ'_{e_k}(e_n)$. We also give an interpretation in term of path to the adjoint dual Pieri rule applied on these $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-characters.

Two supercongruences related to multiple harmonic sums
Published in Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 103 (2021) 379-389 • View Publication • BIB
Let $p$ be a prime and let $x$ be a $p$-adic integer. We provide two supercongruences for truncated series of the form $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1} \frac{(x)_k}{(1)_k}\cdot \frac{1}{k}\sum_{1\le j_1\le\cdots\le j_r\le k}\frac{1}{j_1^{}\cdots j_r^{}}\quad\mbox{and}\quad \sum_{k=1}^{p-1} \frac{(x)_k(1-x)_k}{(1)_k^2}\cdot \frac{1}{k}\sum_{1\le j_1\le\cdots\le j_r\le k}\frac{1}{j_1^{2}\cdots j_r^{2}}.$$

Extra-factorial sum: a graph-theoretic parameter in Hamiltonian cycles of complete weighted graphs
A graph-theoretic parameter, in a form of a function, called the extra-factorial sum is discussed. The main results are presented in ref. [1] (Nastou et al., Optim Lett, 10, 1203-1220, 2016) and the reader is strongly advised to study the aforementioned paper. The current work presents subject matter in a tutorial form with proofs and some newer unpublished results towards the end (lemma six extension and lemma seven). The extra-factorial sum is relevant to Hamiltonian cycles of complete weighted graphs $WH_n$ with $n$ vertices and is obtained for each edge of $WH_n$. If this sum is multiplied by $1 / (n - 2)$ then it gives directly the arithmetic mean of the sum of lengths $l_i$ of all Hamiltonian cycles that traverse a selected edge $e_q$. The number of terms in this sum is a factorial proven to be $(n - 2)!$ which signifies that its value depends on $n$. Using the extra-factorial sum, the arithmetic mean of the sum of the squared lengths of $(n - 1)! / 2$ Hamiltonian cycles of $WH_{n}$ can be obtained as well.
The Moran forest
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms, 59(2):155-188 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
Starting from any graph on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$, consider the Markov chain where at each time-step a uniformly chosen vertex is disconnected from all of its neighbors and reconnected to another uniformly chosen vertex. This Markov chain has a stationary distribution whose support is the set of non-empty forests on $\{1, \ldots, n\}$. The random forest corresponding to this stationary distribution has interesting connections with the uniform rooted labeled tree and the uniform attachment tree. We fully characterize its degree distribution, the distribution of its number of trees, and the limit distribution of the size of a tree sampled uniformly. We also show that the size of the largest tree is asymptotically $α\log n$, where $α= (1 - \log(e - 1))^{-1} \approx 2.18$, and that the degree of the most connected vertex is asymptotically $\log n / \log\log n$.

Minimal resolutions of monomial ideals
An explicit combinatorial minimal free resolution of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field of characteristic $0$ is defined canonically, without any choices, using higher-dimensional generalizations of combined spanning trees for cycles and cocycles ("hedges") in the upper Koszul simplicial complexes of $I$ at lattice points in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The differentials in these "sylvan resolutions" are expressed as matrices whose entries are sums over lattice paths of weights determined combinatorially by sequences of hedges ("hedgerows") along each lattice path. This combinatorics enters via an explicit matroidal expression for the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses of the differentials in any CW complex as weighted averages of splittings defined by hedges. This "Hedge Formula" also yields a projection formula from CW chains to boundaries. The translation from Moore-Penrose combinatorics to free resolutions relies on Wall complexes, which construct minimal free resolutions of graded ideals from vertical splittings of Koszul bicomplexes. The algebra of Wall complexes applied to individual hedgerows yields explicit but noncanonical combinatorial minimal free resolutions of arbitrary monomial ideals in any characteristic.

Random strict partitions and random shifted tableaux
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 26, 10 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We study asymptotics of random shifted Young diagrams which correspond to a given sequence of reducible projective representations of the symmetric groups. We show limit results (Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem) for their shapes, provided that the representation character ratios and their cumulants converge to zero at some prescribed speed. Our class of examples includes uniformly random shifted standard tableaux with prescribed shape as well as shifted tableaux generated by some natural combinatorial algorithms (such as shifted Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence) applied to a random input.

Group-theoretic generalisations of vertex and edge connectivities
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime. Let $P$ be a finite $p$-group of class $2$ and exponent $p$, whose commutator quotient $P/[P,P]$ is of order $p^n$. We define two parameters for $P$ related to central decompositions. The first parameter, $κ(P)$, is the smallest integer $s$ for the existence of a subgroup $S$ of $P$ satisfying (1) $S\cap [P,P]=[S,S]$, (2) $|S/[S,S]|=p^{n-s}$, and (3) $S$ admits a non-trivial central decomposition. The second parameter, $λ(P)$, is the smallest integer $s$ for the existence of a central subgroup $N$ of order $p^s$, such that $P/N$ admits a non-trivial central decomposition. While defined in purely group-theoretic terms, these two parameters generalise respectively the vertex and edge connectivities of graphs: For a simple undirected graph $G$, through the classical procedures of Baer (Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1938), Tutte (J. Lond. Math. Soc., 1947) and Lovász (B. Braz. Math. Soc., 1989), there is a $p$-group of class $2$ and exponent $p$ $P_G$ that is naturally associated with $G$. Our main results show that the vertex connectivity $κ(G)$ is equal to $κ(P_G)$, and the edge connectivity $λ(G)$ is equal to $λ(P_G)$. We also discuss the relation between $κ(P)$ and $λ(P)$ for a general $p$-group $P$ of class $2$ and exponent $p$, as well as the computational aspects of these parameters.

Arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at the same vertex in compositions of digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A digraph $D=(V, A)$ has a good pair at a vertex $r$ if $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at $r$. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ When $T$ is arbitrary, we obtain the following result: every strong digraph composition $Q$ in which $n_i\ge 2$ for every $1\leq i\leq t$, has a good pair at every vertex of $Q.$ The condition of $n_i\ge 2$ in this result cannot be relaxed. When $T$ is semicomplete, we characterize semicomplete compositions with a good pair, which generalizes the corresponding characterization by Bang-Jensen and Huang (J. Graph Theory, 1995) for quasi-transitive digraphs. As a result, we can decide in polynomial time whether a given semicomplete composition has a good pair rooted at a given vertex.

On the coproduct in affine Schubert calculus
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.
Planar Posets that are Accessible from Below Have Dimension at Most 6
Planar posets can have arbitrarily large dimension. However, a planar poset of height $h$ has dimension at most $192h+96$, while a planar poset with $t$ minimal elements has dimension at most $2t+1$. In particular, a planar poset with a unique minimal element has dimension at most $3$. In this paper, we extend this result by showing that a planar poset has dimension at most $6$ if it has a plane diagram in which every minimal element is accessible from below.

On edge-ordered Ramsey numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge-ordered graph is a graph with a linear ordering of its edges. Two edge-ordered graphs are equivalent if their is an isomorphism between them preserving the ordering of the edges. The edge-ordered Ramsey number $r_{edge}(H; q)$ of an edge-ordered graph $H$ is the smallest $N$ such that there exists an edge-ordered graph $G$ on $N$ vertices such that, for every $q$-coloring of the edges of $G$, there is a monochromatic subgraph of $G$ equivalent to $H$. Recently, Balko and Vizer announced that $r_{edge}(H;q)$ exists. However, their proof uses the Graham-Rothschild theorem and consequently gives an enormous upper bound on these numbers. We give a new proof giving a much better bound. We prove that for every edge-ordered graph $H$ on $n$ vertices, we have $r_{edge}(H;q) \leq 2^{c^qn^{2q-2}\log^q n}$, where $c$ is an absolute constant. We also explore the edge-ordered Ramsey number of sparser graphs and prove a polynomial bound for edge-ordered graphs of bounded degeneracy. We also prove a strengthening for edge-labeled graphs, graphs where every edge is given a label and the labels do not necessary have an ordering.
Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares based on Cellular Automata
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate sets of Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares (MOLS) generated by Cellular Automata (CA) over finite fields. After introducing how a CA defined by a bipermutive local rule of diameter $d$ over an alphabet of $q$ elements generates a Latin square of order $q^{d-1}$, we study the conditions under which two CA generate a pair of orthogonal Latin squares. In particular, we prove that the Latin squares induced by two Linear Bipermutive CA (LBCA) over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ are orthogonal if and only if the polynomials associated to their local rules are relatively prime. Next, we enumerate all such pairs of orthogonal Latin squares by counting the pairs of coprime monic polynomials with nonzero constant term and degree $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Finally, we present a construction of MOLS generated by LBCA with irreducible polynomials and prove the maximality of the resulting sets, as well as a lower bound which is asymptotically close to their actual number.

It is demonstrated how an explicit expression of the (partial) sum of Tetranacci numbers can be found and proved using generating functions and the Hadamard product. We also provide a Binet-type formula for generalized Fibonacci numbers, by explicitly factoring the denominator of their generating functions.

Logarithmic integrals, zeta values, and tiered binomial coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study logarithmic integrals of the form $\int_0^1 x^i\ln^n(x)\ln^m(1-x)dx$. They are expressed as a rational linear combination of certain rational numbers $(n,m)_i$, which we call tiered binomial coefficients, and products of the zeta values $ζ(2)$, $ζ(3)$,\dots. Various properties of the tiered binomial coefficients are established. They involve, amongst others, the binomial transform, truncated multiple zeta and multiple zeta star values, as well as special functions. As an application we discuss the limit law of the number of comparisons of the Quicksort algorithm: we reprove that the moments of the limit law are rational polynomials in the zeta values. A novel expression for the cumulants of the Quicksort limit is also presented.
Minimal definable graphs of definable chromatic number at least three

We show that there is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number three that admits a Borel homomorphism to every analytic graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number at least three. Moreover, we characterize the Borel graphs on standard Borel spaces of vertex-degree at most two with this property, and show that the analogous result for digraphs fails.

Consecutive patterns in inversion sequences II: avoiding patterns of relations
Inversion sequences are integer sequences $e=e_{1}e_{2}\dots e_{n}$ such that $0\leq e_{i}<i$ for each $i$. The study of patterns in inversion sequences was initiated by Corteel--Martinez--Savage--Weselcouch and Mansour--Shattuck in the classical (non-consecutive) case, and later by Auli--Elizalde in the consecutive case, where the entries of a pattern are required to occur in adjacent positions. In this paper we continue this investigation by considering {\em consecutive patterns of relations}, in analogy to the work of Martinez--Savage in the classical case. Specifically, given two binary relations $R_{1},R_2\in\{\leq,\geq,<,>,=,\neq\}$, we study inversion sequences $e$ with no subindex $i$ such that $e_{i}R_{1}e_{i+1}R_{2}e_{i+2}$. By enumerating such inversion sequences according to their length, we obtain well-known quantities such as Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers and central polynomial numbers, relating inversion sequences to other combinatorial structures. We also classify consecutive patterns of relations into Wilf equivalence classes, according to the number of inversion sequences avoiding them, and into more restrictive classes that consider the positions of the occurrences of the patterns. As a byproduct of our techniques, we obtain a simple bijective proof of a result of Baxter--Shattuck and Kasraoui about Wilf-equivalence of vincular patterns, and we prove a conjecture of Martinez and Savage, as well as related enumeration formulas for inversion sequences satisfying certain unimodality conditions.
Globally simple Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ when $k\equiv 0,3\mod 4$
Square Heffter arrays are $n\times n$ arrays such that each row and each column contains $k$ filled cells, each row and column sum is divisible by $2nk+1$ and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for each integer $1\leq x\leq nk$. Archdeacon noted that a Heffter array, satisfying two additional conditions, yields a face $2$-colourable embedding of the complete graph $K_{2nk+1}$ on an orientable surface, where for each colour, the faces give a $k$-cycle system. Moreover, a cyclic permutation on the vertices acts as an automorphism of the embedding. These necessary conditions pertain to cyclic orderings of the entries in each row and each column of the Heffter array and are: (1) for each row and each column the sequential partial sums determined by the cyclic ordering must be distinct modulo $2nk+1$; (2) the composition of the cyclic orderings of the rows and columns is equivalent to a single cycle permutation on the entries in the array. We construct Heffter arrays that satisfy condition (1) whenever (a) $k\equiv 0\mod 4$; or (b) $n\equiv 1\mod 4$ and $k\equiv 3\mod 4$; or (c) $n\equiv 0\mod 4$, $k\equiv3\mod 4$ and $n\gg k$. As corollaries to the above we obtain pairs of orthogonal $k$-cycle decompositions of $K_{2nk+1}$.
