On The Maximum Linear Arrangement Problem for Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linear arrangements of graphs are a well-known type of graph labeling and are found in many important computational problems, such as the Minimum Linear Arrangement Problem ($\texttt{minLA}$). A linear arrangement is usually defined as a permutation of the $n$ vertices of a graph. An intuitive geometric setting is that of vertices lying on consecutive integer positions in the real line, starting at 1; edges are often drawn as semicircles above the real line. In this paper we study the Maximum Linear Arrangement problem ($\texttt{MaxLA}$), the maximization variant of $\texttt{minLA}$. We devise a new characterization of maximum arrangements of general graphs, and prove that $\texttt{MaxLA}$ can be solved for cycle graphs in constant time, and for $k$-linear trees ($k\le2$) in time $O(n)$. We present two constrained variants of $\texttt{MaxLA}$ we call $\texttt{bipartite MaxLA}$ and $\texttt{1-thistle MaxLA}$. We prove that the former can be solved in time $O(n)$ for any bipartite graph; the latter, by an algorithm that typically runs in time $O(n^4)$ on unlabelled trees. The combination of the two variants has two promising characteristics. First, it solves $\texttt{MaxLA}$ for almost all trees consisting of a few tenths of nodes. Second, we prove that it constitutes a $3/2$-approximation algorithm for $\texttt{MaxLA}$ for trees. Furthermore, we conjecture that $\texttt{bipartite MaxLA}$ solves $\texttt{MaxLA}$ for at least $50\%$ of all free trees.

Conditionally monotone cumulants via shuffle algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work we study conditional monotone cumulants and additive convolution in the shuffle-algebraic approach to non-commutative probability. We describe c-monotone cumulants as an infinitesimal character and identify the c-monotone additive convolution as an associative operation in the set of pairs of characters in the dual of a double tensor Hopf algebra. In this algebraic framework, we understand previous results on c-monotone cumulants and prove a combinatorial formula that relates c-free and c-monotone cumulants. We also identify the notion of $t$-Boolean cumulants in the shuffle-algebraic approach and introduce the corresponding notion of $t$-monotone cumulants as a particular case of c-monotone cumulants.

Conjectural criteria for the most singular points of the Hilbert schemes of points
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide conjectural necessary and (separately) sufficient conditions for the Hilbert scheme of points of a given length to have the maximum dimension tangent space at a point. The sufficient condition is claimed for 3D and reduces the original problem to a problem in convex geometry. Proving either of the two conjectural statements will in particular resolve a long-standing conjecture by Briançon and Iarrobino back in the '70s for the case of the powers of the maximal ideal. Furthermore, for specific classes of lengths, we conjecturally classify points satisfying the conjectural sufficient conditions. This in particular (conjecturally) provides many new explicit families of examples of maximum dimension tangent space at a point of the Hilbert schemes of points of lengths strictly between two consecutive tetrahedral numbers ${3+k \choose 3}$.
Coxeter interchange graphs
Published in Ann. Comb. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Brualdi and Li introduced tournament interchange graphs. In such a graph, each vertex represents a tournament. Traversing an edge corresponds to reversing a cyclically directed triangle. Such a triangle is neutral, in that its reversal does not affect the score sequence. An interchange graph encodes the combinatorics of the set of tournaments with a given score sequence, or equivalently, of a given fiber of the classical permutahedron from discrete geometry. Coxeter tournaments were introduced by the first author and Sanchez, in relation to the Coxeter permutahedra in Ardila, Castillo, Eur and Postnikov. Coxeter tournaments have collaborative and solitaire games, in addition to the usual competitive games in classical tournaments. We introduce Coxeter interchange graphs. These graphs are more intricate, as there are multiple neutral structures at play, which interact with one another. Our main result shows that the Coxeter interchange graphs are regular, and we describe the degree geometrically, in terms of distances in the Coxeter permutahedra. We also characterize the set of score sequences of Coxeter tournaments, generalizing a classical result of Landau.
Geproci sets on skew lines in $\mathbb P^3$ with two transversals
The purpose of this work is to pursue classification of geproci sets. Specifically we classify $[m,n]$-geproci sets which consist of $m=4$ points on each of $n$ skew lines, assuming the skew lines have two transversals in common. We show that in this case $n\leq 6$. Moreover we show that all geproci sets of this type are contained in the \emph{standard construction} for $m=4$ introduced in arXiv:2209.04820. Finally, we propose a conjectural representation for all geproci sets of this type, irrespective of the number $m$ of points on each skew line.

The Gonality of Queen's Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study queen's graphs, which encode the moves by a queen on an $n\times m$ chess board, through the lens of chip-firing games. We prove that their gonality is equal to $nm$ minus the independence number of the graph, and give a one-to-one correspondence between maximum independent sets and classes of positive rank divisors achieving gonality. We also prove an identical result for toroidal queen's graphs.

On the oriented diameter of near planar triangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that the oriented diameter of any $n$-vertex $2$-connected near triangulation is at most $\lceil{\frac{n}{2}}\rceil$ (except for seven small exceptions), and the upper bound is tight. This extends a result of Wang et.al. on the oriented diameter of maximal outerplanar graphs, and improves an upper bound of $n/2+O(\sqrt{n})$ on the oriented diameter of planar triangulations by Mondal, Parthiban and Rajasingh.

Connectivity Preserving Hamiltonian Cycles in $k$-Connected Dirac Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for $k \geq 2$, there exists a function $f(k) = O(k)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq f(k)$ with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle $H$ such that $G-E(H)$ is $k$-connected. Applying Nash-Williams' result on edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles, we also show that for $k \geq 2$ and $\ell \geq 2$, there exists a function $g(k,\ell) = O(k\ell)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq g(k,\ell)$ with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains $\ell$ edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles $H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_\ell$ such that $G-\cup_{1 \leq i \leq \ell}E(H_i)$ is $k$-connected. As a corollary, we have a statement that refines the result of Nash-Williams for $k$-connected graphs with $k \leq 8$. Moreover, when the connectivity of $G$ is exactly $k$, a similar result with an improved lower bound on $n$ can be shown, which does not depend on the result of Nash-Williams.

Non-backtracking eigenvalues and eigenvectors of random regular graphs and hypergraphs
The non-backtracking operator of a graph is a powerful tool in spectral graph theory and random matrix theory. Most existing results for the non-backtracking operator of a random graph concern only eigenvalues or top eigenvectors. In this paper, we take the first step in analyzing its bulk eigenvector behaviors. We demonstrate that for the non-backtracking operator $B$ of a random $d$-regular graph, its eigenvectors corresponding to nontrivial eigenvalues are completely delocalized with high probability. Additionally, we show complete delocalization for a reduced $2n \times 2n$ non-backtracking matrix $\tilde{B}$. By projecting all eigenvalues of $\tilde{B}$ onto the real line, we obtain an empirical measure that converges weakly in probability to the Kesten-McKay law for fixed $d\geq 3$ and to a semicircle law as $d \to\infty$ with $n \to\infty$. We extend our analysis to random regular hypergraphs, including the limiting measure of the real part of the spectrum for $\tilde{B}$, $\ell_{\infty}$-norm bounds for the eigenvectors of $\tilde{B}$ and $B$, and a deterministic relation between eigenvectors of $B$ and the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix. As an application, we analyze the non-backtracking spectrum of the regular stochastic block model (RSBM) and provide a spectral method based on eigenvectors of $\tilde{B}$ to recover the community structure exactly. We also show that there exists an isolated real eigenvalue with an informative eigenvector inside the circle of radius $\sqrt{d_1+d_2-1}$ in the spectrum of $B$, analogous to the "eigenvalue insider" phenomenon for the Erdős-Rényi stochastic block model conjectured in Dall'Amico et al. (2019).
Domination of subcubic planar graphs with large girth
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since Reed conjectured in 1996 that the domination number of a connected cubic graph of order $n$ is at most $\lceil \frac13 n \rceil$, the domination number of cubic graphs has been extensively studied. It is now known that the conjecture is false in general, but Henning and Dorbec showed that it holds for graphs with girth at least $9$. Zhu and Wu stated an analogous conjecture for 2-connected cubic planar graphs. In this paper, we present a new upper bound for the domination number of subcubic planar graphs: if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph with girth at least 8, then $γ(G) < n_0 + \frac{3}{4} n_1 + \frac{11}{20} n_2 + \frac{7}{20} n_3$, where $n_i$ denotes the number of vertices in $G$ of degree $i$, for $i \in \{0,1,2,3\}$. We also prove that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph with girth at least 9, then $γ(G) < n_0 + \frac{13}{17} n_1 + \frac{9}{17} n_2 + \frac{6}{17} n_3$.
Connected Dominating Sets in Triangulations
We show that every $n$-vertex triangulation has a connected dominating set of size at most $10n/21$. Equivalently, every $n$ vertex triangulation has a spanning tree with at least $11n/21$ leaves. Prior to the current work, the best known bounds were $n/2$, which follows from work of Albertson, Berman, Hutchinson, and Thomassen (J. Graph Theory \textbf{14}(2):247--258). One immediate consequence of this result is an improved bound for the SEFENOMAP graph drawing problem of Angelini, Evans, Frati, and Gudmundsson (J. Graph Theory \textbf{82}(1):45--64). As a second application, we show that for every set $P$ of $\lceil 11n/21\rceil$ points in $\R^2$ every $n$-vertex planar graph has a one-bend non-crossing drawing in which some set of $11n/21$ vertices is drawn on the points of $P$. The main result extends to $n$-vertex triangulations of genus-$g$ surfaces, and implies that these have connected dominating sets of size at most $10n/21+O(\sqrt{gn})$.

Regular polygons, line operators, and elliptic modular surfaces as realization spaces of matroids
For an integer $n\geq 7$, we investigate the matroid realization space of a specific deformation of the regular $n$-gon along with its lines of symmetry. It turns out that this particular realization space is birational to the elliptic modular surface $Ξ_{1}(n)$ over the modular curve $X_{1}(n)$. In this way, we obtain a model of $Ξ_{1}(n)$ defined over the rational numbers. Furthermore, a natural geometric operator acts on these matroid realizations. On the elliptic modular surface, this operator corresponds to the multiplication by $-2$ on the elliptic curves. This provides a new geometric approach to computing multiplication by $-2$ on elliptic curves.

Excluded minors of interval positroids that are paving matroids
We prove that every paving matroid that is an excluded minor of interval positroids can be reduced to one of three fundamental families of excluded minors of interval positroids by relaxing dependent hyperplanes. Using this result, we classify all non-positroid excluded minors of interval positroids that are paving matroids. Additionally, we provide a criterion that characterizes all excluded minors of interval positroids that are paving positroids.

A note on the chromatic number of the square of a sparse random graph

We show that w.h.p the list chromatic number $χ_\ell$ of the square of $G_{n,p}$ for $p=c/n$ is asymptotically equal to the maximum degree $Δ(G_{n,p})$. Since $χ(G^2_{n,p})\leq χ_\ell(G^2_{n,p})$, this also improves an earlier result of Garapaty et al \cite{KLMP} who proved that $χ(G^2_{n,p}) \leq 6 \cdot Δ(G_{n,p})$ w.h.p.

Totally symmetric self-complementary plane partition matrices and related polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plane partitions in the totally symmetric self-complementary symmetry class (TSSCPP) are known to be equinumerous with n x n alternating sign matrices, but no explicit bijection is known. In this paper, we give a bijection from these plane partitions to {0,1,-1}-matrices we call magog matrices, some of which are alternating sign matrices. We explore enumerative properties of these matrices related to natural statistics such as inversion number and number of negative ones. We then investigate the polytope defined as their convex hull. We show that all the magog matrices are extreme and give a partial inequality description. Finally, we define another TSSCPP polytope as the convex hull of TSSCPP boolean triangles and determine its dimension, inequalities, vertices, and facets.

Metallic mean Wang tiles I: self-similarity, aperiodicity and minimality
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) : e133 • View PublicationBIB
For every positive integer $n$, we introduce a set $\mathcal{T}_n$ made of $(n+3)^2$ Wang tiles (unit squares with labeled edges). We represent a tiling by translates of these tiles as a configuration $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathcal{T}_n$. A configuration is valid if the common edge of adjacent tiles has the same label. For every $n\geq1$, we show that the Wang shift $Ω_n$, defined as the set of valid configurations over the tiles $\mathcal{T}_n$, is self-similar, aperiodic and minimal for the shift action. We say that $\{Ω_n\}_{n\geq1}$ is a family of metallic mean Wang shifts, since the inflation factor of the self-similarity of $Ω_n$ is the positive root of the polynomial $x^2-nx-1$. This root is sometimes called the $n$-th metallic mean, and in particular, the golden mean when $n=1$, and the silver mean when $n=2$. When $n=1$, the set of Wang tiles $\mathcal{T}_1$ is equivalent to the Ammann aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles.

$H$-percolation with a random $H$
Published in Electron. Commun. Probab. 29, Paper No. 33, 5 p. (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In $H$-percolation, we start with an Erdős--Rényi graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ and then iteratively add edges that complete copies of $H$. The process percolates if all edges missing from ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ are eventually added. We find the critical threshold $p_c$ when $H={\mathcal G}_{k,1/2}$ is uniformly random, solving a problem of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris.

Multicolor bipartite Ramsey number of double stars
For positive integers $n, m$, the double star $S(n,m)$ is the graph consisting of the disjoint union of two stars $K_{1,n}$ and $K_{1,m}$ together with an edge joining their centers. Finding monochromatic copies of double stars in edge-colored complete bipartite graphs has attracted much attention. The $k$-color bipartite Ramsey number of $ S(n,m)$, denoted by $r_{bip}(S(n,m);k)$, is the smallest integer $N$ such that, in any $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{N,N}$, there is a monochromatic copy of $S(n,m)$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated in the early 1970s by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel. The exact value of $r_{bip}(S(n,m);k)$ is only known when $n=m=1$. Applying the Turán argument in the bipartite setting, here we prove that if $k=2$ and $n\ge m$, or $k\ge3$ and $n\ge 2m$, then \[ r_{bip}(S(n,m);k)=kn+1.\]
Twin-width of sparse random graphs

We show that the twin-width of every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph is at most $n^{\frac{d-2}{2d-2}+o(1)}$ and that almost all $d$-regular graphs attain this bound. More generally, we obtain bounds on the twin-width of sparse Erdős-Renyi and regular random graphs, complementing the bounds in the denser regime due to Ahn, Chakraborti, Hendrey, Kim and Oum.

On a problem of Brown, Erdős and Sós
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $f^{(r)}(n;s,k)$ be the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph not containing a subhypergraph with $k$ edges on at most $s$ vertices. Recently, Delcourt and Postle, building on work of Glock, Joos, Kim, Kühn, Lichev and Pikhurko, proved that the limit $\lim_{n \to \infty} n^{-2} f^{(3)}(n;k+2,k)$ exists for all $k \ge 2$, solving an old problem of Brown, Erdős and Sós (1973). Meanwhile, Shangguan and Tamo asked the more general question of determining if the limit $\lim_{n \to \infty} n^{-t} f^{(r)}(n;k(r-t)+t,k)$ exists for all $r>t\ge 2$ and $k \ge 2$. Here we make progress on their question. For every even $k$, we determine the value of the limit when $r$ is sufficiently large with respect to $k$ and $t$. Moreover, we show that the limit exists for $k \in \{5,7\}$ and all $r > t \ge 2$.
