Mixing time upper bound for the uniformized Rosenthal walk on the special orthogonal groups
We prove that a uniformized variant of both the Rosenthal walk \cite{Rosenthal} and the Kac random walk \cite{Kac} on SO(n) mixes in $\cO(n^3)$ steps in total variation distance. The proof also extends easily to Rosenthal walk with fixed angle $θ\neq π$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first polynomial time bound for both walks. The techniques employed are mainly from representation theory of SO(n). But a crucial new ingredient is the interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of the character ratio as counting the number of particle cascade paths arising from the classical branching rules.

Incidence Homology of Finite Projective Spaces
Let F* be the finite field of q elements and let P(n,q) be the projective space of dimension n-1 over F*. We construct a family H^{n}_{k,i} of combinatorial homology modules associated to P(n,q) over a coefficient field F field of characteristic p_{0}>0 co-prime to q. As FGL(n,q)-representations the modules are obtained from the permutation action of GL(n,q) on the subspaces of F*^n. We prove a branching rule for H^{n}_{k,i} and use this rule to determine these homology representations completely. The main results are a duality theorem and the complete characterisation of H^{n}_{k,i} in terms of the standard irreducibles of GL(n,q) over F and applications.

The weighted hook length formula III: Shifted tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a simple proof of the hook length formula was given via the branching rule. In this paper, we extend the results to shifted tableaux. We give a bijective proof of the branching rule for the hook lengths for shifted tableaux; present variants of this rule, including weighted versions; and make the first tentative steps toward a bijective proof of the hook length formula for d-complete posets.

The weighted hook-length formula II: Complementary formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a new weighted generalization of the branching rule for the hook lengths, equivalent to the hook formula, was proved. In this paper, we generalize the complementary branching rule, which can be used to prove Burnside's formula. We present three different proofs: bijective, via weighted hook walks, and via the ordinary weighted branching rule.
The weighted hook length formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
Based on the ideas in [CKP], we introduce the weighted analogue of the branching rule for the classical hook length formula, and give two proofs of this result. The first proof is completely bijective, and in a special case gives a new short combinatorial proof of the hook length formula. Our second proof is probabilistic, generalizing the (usual) hook walk proof of Green-Nijenhuis-Wilf, as well as the q-walk of Kerov. Further applications are also presented.

Distributive Lattices, Affine Semigroups, and Branching Rules of the Classical Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study algebras encoding stable range branching rules for the pairs of complex classical groups of the same type in the context of toric degenerations of spherical varieties. By lifting affine semigroup algebras constructed from combinatorial data of branching multiplicities, we obtain algebras having highest weight vectors in multiplicity spaces as their standard monomial type bases. In particular, we identify a family of distributive lattices and their associated Hibi algebras which can uniformly describe the stable range branching algebras for all the pairs we consider.

Nonzero coefficients in restrictions and tensor products of supercharacters of $U_n(q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The standard supercharacter theory of the finite unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(q)$ gives rise to a beautiful combinatorics based on set partitions. As with the representation theory of the symmetric group, embeddings of $U_m(q)\subseteq U_n(q)$ for $m\leq n$ lead to branching rules. Diaconis and Isaacs established that the restriction of a supercharacter of $U_n(q)$ is a nonnegative integer linear combination of supercharacters of $U_m(q)$ (in fact, it is polynomial in $q$). In a first step towards understanding the combinatorics of coefficients in the branching rules of the supercharacters of $U_n(q)$, this paper characterizes when a given coefficient is nonzero in the restriction of a supercharacter and the tensor product of two supercharacters. These conditions are given uniformly in terms of complete matchings in bipartite graphs.

Branching rules for symmetric Macdonald polynomials and sl_n basic hypergeometric series
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 46 (2011), 424-456 • Search Publication
A one-parameter generalisation R_λ(X;b) of the symmetric Macdonald polynomials and interpolations Macdonald polynomials is studied from the point of view of branching rules. We establish a Pieri formula, evaluation symmetry, principal specialisation formula and q-difference equation for R_λ(X;b). We also prove a new multiple q-Gauss summation formula and several further results for sl_n basic hypergeometric series based on R_λ(X;b).

Branching rules in the ring of superclass functions of unipotent upper-triangular matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is becoming increasingly clear that the supercharacter theory of the finite group of unipotent upper-triangular matrices has a rich combinatorial structure built on set-partitions that is analogous to the partition combinatorics of the classical representation theory of the symmetric group. This paper begins by exploring a connection to the ring of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables that mirrors the symmetric group's relationship with the ring of symmetric functions. It then also investigates some of the representation theoretic structure constants arising from the restriction, tensor products and superinduction of supercharacters in this context.

Branching rules for Hecke Algebras of Type $D_{n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.

Branching rules, Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and $q$-multiplicities in tensor product for the root systems $B\_{n},C\_{n}$ and $D\_{n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kostka-Foulkes polynomials $K$ related to a root system $φ$ can be defined as alternated sums running over the Weyl group associated to $φ.$ By restricting these sums over the elements of the symmetric group when $% φ$ is of type $B,C$ or $D$, we obtain again a class $\widetilde{K}$ of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. When $φ$ is of type $C$ or $D$ there exists a duality beetween these polynomials and some natural $q$-multiplicities $U$ in tensor product \cite{lec}. In this paper we first establish identities for the $\widetilde{K}$ which implies in particular that they can be decomposed as sums of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials related to the root system of type $A$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. Moreover these coefficients are branching rule coefficients. This allows us to clarify the connection beetween the $q$-multiplicities $U$ and the polynomials defined by Shimozono and Zabrocki in \cite{SZ}. Finally we establish that the $q$-multiplicities $U$ defined for the tensor powers of the vector representation coincide up to a power of $q$ with the one dimension sum $X$ introduced in \cite{Ok} This shows that in this case the one dimension sums $% X$ are affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Signature quantization, representations of compact Lie groups, and a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss some applications of signature quantization to the representation theory of compact Lie groups. In particular, we prove signature analogues of the Kostant formula for weight multiplicities and the Steinberg formula for tensor product multiplicities. Using symmetric functions, we also find, for type A, analogues of the Weyl branching rule and the Gelfand-Tsetlin theorem. These analogues involve a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function. We show that in type A, this q-analogue is polynomial in the relative interior of the cells of a complex of cones. This chamber complex can be taken to be the same as the chamber complex of the usual Kostant partition function. We present the case of A_2 as a detailed example.

BC_n-symmetric polynomials
We consider two important families of BC_n-symmetric polynomials, namely Okounkov's interpolation polynomials and Koornwinder's orthogonal polynomials. We give a family of difference equations satisfied by the former, as well as generalizations of the branching rule and Pieri identity, leading to a number of multivariate q-analogues of classical hypergeometric transformations. For the latter, we give new proofs of Macdonald's conjectures, as well as new identities, including an inverse binomial formula and several branching rule and connection coefficient identities. We also derive families of ordinary symmetric functions that reduce to the interpolation and Koornwinder polynomials upon appropriate specialization. As an application, we consider a number of new integral conjectures associated to classical symmetric spaces.

A straightening algorithm for row-convex tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We produce a new basis for the Schur and Weyl modules associated to a row-convex shape, D. The basis is indexed by new class of "straight" tableaux which we introduce by weakening the usual requirements for standard tableaux. Spanning is proved via a new straightening algorithm for expanding elements of the representation into this basis. For skew shapes, this algorithm specializes to the classical straightening law. The new straight basis is used to produce bases for flagged Schur and Weyl modules, to provide Groebner and sagbi bases for the homogeneous coordinate rings of some configuration varieties and to produce a flagged branching rule for row-convex representations. Systematic use of supersymmetric letterplace techniques enables the representation theoretic results to be applied to representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra as well as to the general linear group.
