We use a Mayer-Vietoris-like spectral sequence to establish vanishing results for the cohomology of complements of linear and elliptic hyperplane arrangements, as part of a more general framework involving duality and abelian duality properties of spaces and groups. In the process, we consider cohomology of local systems with a general, Cohen-Macaulay-type condition. As a result, we recover known vanishing theorems for rank-1 local systems as well as group ring coefficients, and obtain new generalizations.

We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double theta polynomials, which specialize to both the theta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis, and to double (or factorial) Schur S-polynomials and Q-polynomials. These double theta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of symplectic Grassmannians, and we employ them to obtain a new presentation of this ring in terms of intrinsic generators and relations.

This paper introduces a two-parameter deformation of the cohomology of generalized flag varieties. One special case is the Belkale-Kumar deformation (used to study eigencones of Lie groups). Another picks out intersections of Schubert varieties that behave nicely under projections. Our construction yields a new proof that the Belkale-Kumar product is well-defined. This proof is shorter and more elementary than earlier proofs.

A bi-arrangement of hyperplanes in a complex affine space is the data of two sets of hyperplanes along with a coloring information on the strata. To such a bi-arrangement, one naturally associates a relative cohomology group, that we call its motive. The motivation for studying such relative cohomology groups comes from the notion of motivic period. More generally, we suggest the systematic study of the motive of a bi-arrangement of hypersurfaces in a complex manifold. We provide combinatorial and cohomological tools to compute the structure of these motives. Our main object is the Orlik-Solomon bi-complex of a bi-arrangement, which generalizes the Orlik-Solomon algebra of an arrangement. Loosely speaking, our main result states that "the motive of an exact bi-arrangement is computed by its Orlik-Solomon bi-complex", which generalizes classical facts involving the Orlik-Solomon algebra of an arrangement. We show how this formalism allows us to explicitly compute motives arising from the study of multiple zeta values and sketch a more general application to periods of mixed Tate motives.
Cohomology classes of interval positroid varieties and a conjecture of Liu

To each finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ (a diagram), one can associate a subvariety of a complex Grassmannian (a diagram variety), and a representation of a symmetric group (a Specht module). Liu has conjectured that the cohomology class of a diagram variety is represented by the Frobenius characteristic of the corresponding Specht module. We give a counterexample to this conjecture.
However, we show that for the diagram variety of a permutation diagram, Liu's conjectured cohomology class $σ$ is at least an upper bound on the actual class $τ$, in the sense that $σ- τ$ is a nonnegative linear combination of Schubert classes. To do this, we exhibit the appropriate diagram variety as a component in a degeneration of one of Knutson's interval positroid varieties (up to Grassmann duality). A priori, the cohomology classes of these interval positroid varieties are represented by affine Stanley symmetric functions. We give a different formula for these classes as ordinary Stanley symmetric functions, one with the advantage of being Schur-positive and compatible with inclusions between Grassmannians.
On cohomology theory of (di)graphs

To a digraph with a choice of certain integral basis, we construct a CW complex, whose integral singular cohomology is canonically isomorphic to the path cohomology of the digraph as introduced in \cite{GLMY}. The homotopy type of the CW complex turns out to be independent of the choice of basis. After a very brief discussion of functoriality, this construction immediately implies some of the expected but perhaps combinatorially subtle properties of the digraph cohomology and homotopy proved very recently \cite{GLMY2}. Furthermore, one gets a very simple expected formula for the cup product of forms on the digraph. On the other hand, we present an approach of using sheaf theory to reformulate (di)graph cohomologies. The investigation of the path cohomology from this framework, leads to a subtle version of Poincare lemma for digraphs, which follows from the construction of the CW complex.
Matroid theory for algebraic geometers

This article is a survey of matroid theory aimed at algebraic geometers. Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear subspaces and hyperplane arrangements. Not all matroids come from linear subspaces; those that do are said to be representable. Still, one may apply linear algebraic constructions to non-representable matroids. There are a number of different definitions of matroids, a phenomenon known as cryptomorphism. In this survey, we begin by reviewing the classical definitions of matroids, develop operations in matroid theory, summarize some results in representability, and construct polynomial invariants of matroids. Afterwards, we focus on matroid polytopes, introduced by Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova, which give a cryptomorphic definition of matroids. We explain certain locally closed subsets of the Grassmannian, thin Schubert cells, which are labeled by matroids, and which have applications to representability, moduli problems, and invariants of matroids following Fink-Speyer. We explain how matroids can be thought of as cohomology classes in a particular toric variety, the permutohedral variety, by means of Bergman fans, and apply this description to give an exposition of the proof of log-concavity of the characteristic polynomial of representable matroids due to the author with Huh.

Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $Λ_0, \ldots, Λ_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these operators we deduce the existence of two quantum cohomology rings, which satisfy properties conjectured earlier by Guest and Otofuji for $G= \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The first quantum ring is a deformation of the subalgebra of $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ generated by divisors. The second ring, denoted $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$, deforms the ordinary quantum cohomology ring $\mathrm{QH}^*(G/B)$ by adding an affine quantum parameter $q_0$. We prove that $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ is a Frobenius algebra, and that the new quantum product determines a flat Dubrovin connection. Further, we develop an analogue of Givental and Kim formalism for this ring and we deduce a presentation of $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ by generators and relations. The ideal of relations is generated by the integrals of motion for the periodic Toda lattice associated to the dual of the extended Dynkin diagram of $G$.

An important combinatorial result in equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory Schubert calculus is represented by the formulas of Billey and Graham-Willems for the localization of Schubert classes at torus fixed points. These formulas work uniformly in all Lie types, and are based on the concept of a root polynomial. In this paper we define formal root polynomials associated with an arbitrary formal group law (and thus a generalized cohomology theory). We focus on the case of the hyperbolic formal group law (corresponding to elliptic cohomology). We study some of the properties of formal root polynomials. We give applications to the efficient computation of the transition matrix between two natural bases of the formal Demazure algebra in the hyperbolic case. As a corollary, we rederive in a transparent and uniform manner the formulas of Billey and Graham-Willems. We also prove the corresponding formula in connective $K$-theory, which seems new, and a duality result in this case. Other applications, including some related to the computation of Bott-Samelson classes in elliptic cohomology, are also discussed.

The amplituhedron was recently introduced in the study of scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ super Yang-Mills. We compute the cohomology class of a tree amplituhedron subvariety of the Grassmannian to be the truncation of an affine Stanley symmetric function.
Cohomological consequences of the pattern map

Billey and Braden defined maps on flag manifolds that are the geometric counterpart of permutation patterns. A section of their pattern map is an embedding of the flag manifold of a Levi subgroup into the full flag manifold. We give two expressions for the induced map on cohomology. One is in terms of generators and the other is in terms of the Schubert basis. We show that the coefficients in the second expression are naturally Schubert structure constants and therefore positive. These formulas also hold for K-theory, and generalize known formulas in type A for cohomology and K-theory.
Local spectral expansion approach to high dimensional expanders
This paper introduces the notion of local spectral expansion of a simplicial complex as a possible analogue of spectral expansion defined for graphs. We show the condition of local spectral expansion has several nice implications. For example, for a simplicial complex with local spectral expansion we show vanishing of cohomology with real coefficients, Cheeger type inequalities and mixing type results and geometric overlap results.
Spaces of Hermitian operators with simple spectra and their finite-order cohomology
The topology of spaces of Hermitian operators in $C^n$ with non-simple spectra was studied by V.Arnold in a relation with the theory of adiabatic connections and the quantum Hall effect. The natural filtration of these spaces by the sets of operators with fixed numbers of eigenvalues defines the spectral sequence, providing interesting combinatorial and homological information on this stratification.
We construct a different spectral sequence, also counting the homology groups of these spaces and based on the universal techniques of {\em topological order complexes} and resolutions of algebraic varieties, generalizing the combinatorial inclusion-exclusion formula and similar to the construction of finite degree knot invariants.
This spectral sequence degenerates at the term $E_1$, is (conjecturally) multiplicative, and as $n$ grows then it converges to a stable spectral sequence counting the cohomology of the space of infinite Hermitian operators without multiple eigenvalues, all whose terms $E^{p,q}_r$ are finitely generated. It allows us to define the finite degree cohomology classes of this space, and to apply the well-known facts and methods of the topological theory of flag manifolds to the problems of geometrical combinatorics, especially concerning the continuous partially ordered sets of subspaces and flags.

The combinatorics and topology of proper toric maps

We study the topology of toric maps. We show that if $f\colon X\to Y$ is a proper toric morphism, with $X$ simplicial, then the cohomology of every fiber of $f$ is pure and of Hodge-Tate type. When the map is a fibration, we give an explicit formula for the Betti numbers of the fibers in terms of a relative version of the $f$-vector, extending the usual formula for the Betti numbers of a simplicial complete toric variety. We then describe the Decomposition Theorem for a toric fibration, giving in particular a nonnegative combinatorial invariant attached to each cone in the fan of $Y$, which is positive precisely when the corresponding closed subset of $Y$ appears as a support in the Decomposition Theorem. The description of this invariant involves the stalks of the intersection cohomology complexes on $X$ and $Y$, but in the case when both $X$ and $Y$ are simplicial, there is a simple formula in terms of the relative $f$-vector.
On Hochster's formula for a class of quotient spaces of moment-angle complexes

Any finite simplicial complex K and a partition of the vertex set of K determines a canonical quotient space of the moment-angle complex of K. We prove that the cohomology groups of such a space can be computed via some Hochster's type formula, which generalizes the usual Hochster's formula for the cohomology groups of moment-angle complexes. In addition, we show that the stable decomposition of moment-angle complexes can also be extended to such spaces. This type of spaces include all the quasitoric manifolds that are pullback from the linear models. And we prove that the moment-angle complex associated to a finite simplicial poset is always homotopy equivalent to one of such spaces.

We give a Pieri rule for the torus-equivariant cohomology of (submaximal) Grassmannians of Lie types B, C, and D. To the authors' best knowledge, our rule is the first manifestly positive formula, beyond the equivariant Chevalley formula. We also give a simple proof of the equivariant Pieri rule for the ordinary (type A) Grassmannian.

We prove the affine Pieri rule for the cohomology of the affine flag variety conjectured by Lam, Lapointe, Morse and Shimozono. We study the cap operator on the affine nilHecke ring that is motivated by Kostant and Kumar's work on the equivariant cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cap operators for Pieri elements are the same as Pieri operators defined by Berg, Saliola and Serrano. This establishes the affine Pieri rule.
Morse Theory on 1-Skeleta
Guillemin and Zara gave necessary and sufficient conditions under which Morse theoretic techniques could be used to construct an additive basis for the equivariant cohomology of a 1-skeleton that is either 3-independent or GKM. We show that their conditions remain valid for all 1-skeleta, 3-independent, GKM, or otherwise.
On models of the braid arrangement and their hidden symmetries

The De Concini-Procesi wonderful models of the braid arrangement of type $A_{n-1}$ are equipped with a natural $S_n$ action, but only the minimal model admits an `hidden' symmetry, i.e. an action of $S_{n+1}$ that comes from its moduli space interpretation. In this paper we explain why the non minimal models don't admit this extended action: they are `too small'. In particular we construct a {\em supermaximal} model which is the smallest model that can be projected onto the maximal model and again admits an extended $S_{n+1}$ action. We give an explicit description of a basis for the integer cohomology of this supermaximal model.
Furthermore, we deal with another hidden extended action of the symmetric group: we observe that the symmetric group $S_{n+k}$ acts by permutation on the set of $k$-codimensionl strata of the minimal model. Even if this happens at a purely combinatorial level, it gives rise to an interesting permutation action on the elements of a basis of the integer cohomology.
