The intersection ring of matroids

We study a particular graded ring structure on the set of all loopfree matroids on a fixed labeled ground set, which occurs naturally in tropical geometry. The product is given by matroid intersection and the additive structure is defined by assigning to each matroid the indicator vector of its chains of flats. We show that this ring is generated in corank one, more precisely that any matroid can be written as a linear combination of products of corank one matroids. Moreover, we prove that a basis for the graded part of rank r matroids is given by the set of nested matroids and that the total number of these is a Eulerian number. Derksen's G-invariant then defines a Z-linear map on this ring, which implies for example that the Tutte polynomial is linear on it as well. Finally we show that the ring is the cohomology ring of the toric variety of the permutohedron and thus fulfills Poincaré duality.
A second proof of the Shareshian--Wachs conjecture, by way of a new Hopf algebra
This is a set of working notes which give a second proof of the Shareshian--Wachs conjecture, the first (and recent) proof being by Brosnan and Chow in November 2015. The conjecture relates some symmetric functions constructed combinatorially out of unit interval graphs (their $q$-chromatic quasisymmetric functions), and some symmetric functions constructed algebro-geometrically out of Tymoczko's representation of the symmetric group on the equivariant cohomology ring of a family of subvarieties of the complex flag variety, called regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. Brosnan and Chow's proof is based in part on the idea of deforming the Hessenberg varieties. The proof given here, in contrast, is based on the idea of recursively decomposing Hessenberg varieties, using a new Hopf algebra as the organizing principle for this recursion. We hope that taken together, each approach will shed some light on the other, since there are still many outstanding questions regarding the objects under study.

The problem of computing products of Schubert classes in the cohomology ring can be formulated as the problem of expanding skew Schur polynomials into the basis of ordinary Schur polynomials. In contrast, the problem of computing the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a Grassmannian variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves is not equivalent to expanding skew stable Grothendieck polynomials into the basis of ordinary stable Grothendiecks. Instead, we show that the appropriate K-theoretic analogy is through the expansion of skew reverse plane partitions into the basis of polynomials which are Hopf-dual to stable Grothendieck polynomials. We combinatorially prove this expansion is determined by Yamanouchi set-valued tableaux. A by-product of our results is a dual approach proof for Buch's K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of stable Grothendieck polynomials.

We compute the cohomology of the complement of toric arrangements associated to root systems as representations of the corresponding Weyl groups. Specifically, we develop an algorithm for computing the cohomology of the complement of toric arrangements associated to general root systems and we carry out this computation for the exceptional root systems $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$ and $E_7$. We also compute the total cohomology of the complement of the toric arrangement associated to $A_n$ as a representation of the Weyl group and give a formula for its Poincaré polynomial.
Polynomial partitioning for several sets of varieties
We give a new, systematic proof for a recent result of Larry Guth and thus also extend the result to a setting with several families of varieties: For any integer $D\geq 1$ and any collection of sets $Γ_1,\ldots,Γ_j$ of low-degree $k$-dimensional varieties in $\mathbb{R}^n$ there exists a non-zero polynomial $p\in\mathbb{R}[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$ of degree at most $D$ so that each connected component of $\mathbb{R}^n{\setminus}Z(p)$ intersects $O(jD^{k-n}|Γ_i|)$ varieties of $Γ_i$, simultaneously for every $1\leq i\leq j$. For $j=1$ we recover the original result by Guth. Our proof, via an index calculation in equivariant cohomology, shows how the degrees of the polynomials used for partitioning are dictated by the topology, namely by the Euler class being given in terms of a top Dickson polynomial.

Let $n$ be a fixed positive integer and $h: \{1,2,\ldots,n\} \rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ a Hessenberg function. The main results of this paper are twofold. First, we give a systematic method, depending in a simple manner on the Hessenberg function $h$, for producing an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the cohomology ring $H^\ast(Hess(\mathsf{N},h))$ with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients of the corresponding regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $Hess(\mathsf{N},h)$. Our result generalizes known results in special cases such as the Peterson variety and also allows us to answer a question posed by Mbirika and Tymoczko. Moreover, our list of generators in fact forms a regular sequence, allowing us to use techniques from commutative algebra in our arguments. Our second main result gives an isomorphism between the cohomology ring $H^*(Hess(\mathsf{N},h))$ of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety and the $S_n$-invariant subring $H^*(Hess(\mathsf{S},h))^{S_n}$ of the cohomology ring of the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety (with respect to the $S_n$-action on $H^*(Hess(\mathsf{S},h))$ defined by Tymoczko). Our second main result implies that $\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{Q}} H^k(Hess(\mathsf{N},h)) = \mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{Q}} H^k(Hess(\mathsf{S},h))^{S_n}$ for all $k$ and hence partially proves the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture in combinatorics, which is in turn related to the well-known Stanley-Stembridge conjecture. A proof of the full Shareshian-Wachs conjecture was recently given by Brosnan and Chow, but in our special case, our methods yield a stronger result (i.e. an isomorphism of rings) by more elementary considerations. This paper provides detailed proofs of results we recorded previously in a research announcement.
Abelian duality and propagation of resonance

We explore the relationship between a certain "abelian duality" property of spaces and the propagation properties of their cohomology jump loci. To that end, we develop the analogy between abelian duality spaces and those spaces which possess what we call the "EPY property." The same underlying homological algebra allows us to deduce the propagation of jump loci: in the former case, characteristic varieties propagate, and in the latter, the resonance varieties. We apply the general theory to arrangements of linear and elliptic hyperplanes, as well as toric complexes, right-angled Artin groups, and Bestvina-Brady groups. Our approach brings to the fore the relevance of the Cohen-Macaulay condition in this combinatorial context.
Unit Interval Orders and the Dot Action on the Cohomology of Regular Semisimple Hessenberg Varieties

Motivated by a 1993 conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge, Shareshian and Wachs conjectured that the characteristic map takes the dot action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to $ωX_G(t)$, where $X_G(t)$ is the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph $G$ of the corresponding natural unit interval order, and $ω$ is the usual involution on symmetric functions. We prove the Shareshian--Wachs conjecture. Our proof uses the local invariant cycle theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne to obtain a surjection from the cohomology of a regular Hessenberg variety of Jordan type $λ$ to a space of local invariant cycles; as $λ$ ranges over all partitions, these spaces collectively contain all the information about the dot action on a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. Using a palindromicity argument, we show that in our case the surjections are actually isomorphisms, thus reducing the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture to computing the cohomology of a regular Hessenberg variety. But this cohomology has already been described combinatorially by Tymoczko; we give a bijective proof (using a generalization of a combinatorial reciprocity theorem of Chow) that Tymoczko's combinatorial description coincides with the combinatorics of the chromatic quasisymmetric function.

We develop a cohomological method to classify amalgams of groups. We generalize this to simplicial amalgams in any concrete category. We compute the non-commutative 1-cohomology for several examples of amalgams defined over small simplices.

We introduce a theory of volume polynomials and corresponding duality algebras of multi-fans. Any complete simplicial multi-fan $Δ$ determines a volume polynomial $V_Δ$ whose values are the volumes of multi-polytopes based on $Δ$. This homogeneous polynomial is further used to construct a Poincare duality algebra $\mathcal{A}^*(Δ)$. We study the structure and properties of $V_Δ$ and $\mathcal{A}^*(Δ)$ and give applications and connections to other subjects, such as Macaulay duality, Novik--Swartz theory of face rings of simplicial manifolds, generalizations of Minkowski's theorem on convex polytopes, cohomology of torus manifolds, computations of volumes, and linear relations on the powers of linear forms. In particular, we prove that the analogue of the $g$-theorem does not hold for multi-polytopes.

Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.

We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.
Cell complexes, poset topology and the representation theory of algebras arising in algebraic combinatorics and discrete geometry

In recent years it has been noted that a number of combinatorial structures such as real and complex hyperplane arrangements, interval greedoids, matroids and oriented matroids have the structure of a finite monoid called a left regular band. Random walks on the monoid model a number of interesting Markov chains such as the Tsetlin library and riffle shuffle. The representation theory of left regular bands then comes into play and has had a major influence on both the combinatorics and the probability theory associated to such structures. In a recent paper, the authors established a close connection between algebraic and combinatorial invariants of a left regular band by showing that certain homological invariants of the algebra of a left regular band coincide with the cohomology of order complexes of posets naturally associated to the left regular band.
The purpose of the present monograph is to further develop and deepen the connection between left regular bands and poset topology. This allows us to compute finite projective resolutions of all simple modules of left regular band algebras over fields and much more. In the process, we are led to define the class of CW left regular bands as the class of left regular bands whose associated posets are the face posets of regular CW complexes. Most of the examples that have arisen in the literature belong to this class. A new and important class of examples is a left regular band structure on the face poset of a CAT(0) cube complex. Also, the recently introduced notion of a COM (complex of oriented matroids or conditional oriented matroid) fits nicely into our setting and includes CAT(0) cube complexes and certain more general CAT(0) zonotopal complexes. A fairly complete picture of the representation theory for CW left regular bands is obtained.
The Cohomology of Quaternionic Hyperplane Complements
Over the complex numbers, the complement of a collection of hyperplanes is a widely-studied object; the cohomology ring, in particular, is known to have a structure depending only on the combinatorial properties of the intersection of hyperplanes. The fundamental group, on the other hand, requires specific knowledge about the particular embedding in complex space, though the tower of nilpotent quotients can still be determined (see arXiv:math/9805056).
Over the quaternions, however, since hyperplane complements are simply connected, the topological properties of hyperplane complements are simultaneously more and less complicated. In this article, we show not only that the cohomology ring of the complement is the same algebra as in the complex case, up to a multiplication of indices by $3$, but that the rational homotopy type can be determined entirely by the cohomology ring.
A Schubert basis in equivariant elliptic cohomology
We address the problem of defining Schubert classes independently of a reduced word in equivariant elliptic cohomology, based on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of a corresponding Hecke algebra. We study some basic properties of these classes, and make two important conjectures about them: a positivity conjecture, and the agreement with the topologically defined Schubert classes in the smooth case. We prove some special cases of these conjectures.
Relations between counting functions on free groups and free monoids

We consider finite sums of counting functions on the free group $F_n$ and the free monoid $M_n$ for $n \geq 2$. Two such sums are considered equivalent if they differ by a bounded function. We find the complete set of linear relations between equivalence classes of sums of counting functions and apply this result to construct an explicit basis for the vector space of such equivalence classes. Moreover, we provide a graphical algorithm to determine whether two given sums of counting functions are equivalent. In particular, this yields an algorithm to decide whether two sums of Brooks quasimorphisms on $F_n$ represent the same class in bounded cohomology.
Algebraic structures on cohomology of configuration spaces of manifolds with flows
Let PConf^n M be the configuration space of ordered n-tuples of distinct points on a smooth manifold M admitting a nowhere-vanishing vector field. We show that the ith cohomology group with coefficients in a field H^i(PConf^n M, k) is an N-module, where N is the category of noncommutative finite sets introduced by Pirashvili and Richter. Studying the representation theory of N, we obtain new polynomiality results for the cohomology groups H^i(PConf^n M, k). In the case of unordered configuration space Conf^n M = (PConf^n M)/S_n and rational coefficients, we show that cohomology dimension in fixed degree is nondecreasing.

Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule expresses the product of a Schur function with a Newton power sum in the basis of Schur functions. We establish a version of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Schubert polynomials and a version for the quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. These rules compute all intersections of Schubert cycles with tautological classes coming from the Chern character.
