Topology of the tropical moduli spaces $M_{2,n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the topology of the link $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{g,n}[1]$ of the tropical moduli spaces of curves when g=2. Tropical moduli spaces can be identified with boundary complexes for $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, as shown by Abramovich-Caporaso-Payne, so their reduced rational homology encodes top-weight rational cohomology of the complex moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. We prove that $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{2,n}[1]$ is an $n$-connected topological space whose reduced integral homology is supported in the top two degrees only. We compute the reduced Euler characteristic of $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{g,n}[1]$ for all n, and we compute the rational homology of $M^{\mathrm{trop}}_{2,n}[1]$ when $n \le 8$, determining completely the top-weight $\mathbb{Q}$-cohomology of $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$ in that range.
Renormalization and Hopf Algebraic Structure of the 5-Dimensional Quartic Tensor Field Theory
Published in J.Phys. A48 (2015) no.48, 485204 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the study of renormalization of the quartic melonic tensor model in dimension (=rank) five. We review the perturbative renormalization and the computation of the one loop beta function, confirming the asymptotic freedom of the model. We then define the Connes-Kreimer-like Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of the renormalization of this model and we analyze in detail, at one- and two-loop levels, the Hochschild cohomology allowing to write the combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations. Feynman tensor graph Hopf subalgebras are also exhibited.

Exponential formulas for models of complex reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we find some exponential formulas for the Betti numbers of the De Concini-Procesi minimal wonderful models Y_{G(r,p,n)} associated to the complex reflection groups G(r,p,n). Our formulas are different from the ones already known in the literature: they are obtained by a new combinatorial encoding of the elements of a basis of the cohomology by means of set partitions with weights and exponents. We also point out that a similar combinatorial encoding can be used to describe the faces of the real spherical wonderful models of type A_{n-1}=G(1,1,n), B_n=G(2,1,n) and D_n=G(2,2,n). This provides exponential formulas for the f-vectors of the associated nestohedra: the Stasheff's associahedra (in this case closed formulas are well known) and the graph associahedra of type D_n.

Double eta polynomials and equivariant Giambelli formulas
Published in J. London Math. Society 94 (2016), 209-229 • Search Publication
We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double eta polynomials, which are an even orthogonal analogue of Wilson's double theta polynomials. Our double eta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of even orthogonal Grassmannians, and specialize to the single eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author.

Combinatorial description of the cohomology of the affine flag variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

On equivariant quantum Schubert calculus for G/P
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show a Z^2-filtered algebraic structure and a "quantum to classical" principle on the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of a complete flag variety of general Lie type, generalizing earlier works of Leung and the second author. We also provide various applications on equivariant quantum Schubert calculus, including an equivariant quantum Pieri rule for any partial flag variety of Lie type A.

The Kuenneth formula for graphs
We construct a Cartesian product G x H for finite simple graphs. It satisfies the Kuenneth formula: H^k(G x H) is a direct sum of tensor products H^i(G) x H^j(G) with i+j=k and so p(G x H,x) = p(G,x) p(H,y) for the Poincare polynomial p(G,x) and X(G x H) = X(G) X(H) for the Euler characteristic X(G)=p(G,-1). G1=G x K1 has as vertices the simplices of G and a natural digraph structure. We show that dim(G1) is larger or equal than dim(G) and G1 is homotopic to G. The Kuenneth identity is proven using Hodge describing the harmonic forms by the product f g of harmonic forms of G and H and uses a discrete de Rham theorem given by a combinatorial chain homotopy between simplicial and de Rham cohomology. We show dim(G x H) = dim(G1) + dim(H1) implying that dim(G x H) is larger or equal than dim(G) + dim(H) as for Hausdorff dimension in the continuum. The chromatic number c(G1) is smaller or equal than c(G) and c(G x H) is bounded above by c(G)+c(H)-1. The automorphism group of G x H contains Aut(G) x Aut(H). If G~H and U~V then (G x U) ~ (H x V) if ~ means homotopic: homotopy classes can be multiplided. If G is k-dimensional geometric meaning that all unit spheres S(x) in G are (k-1)-discrete homotopy spheres, then G1 is k-dimensional geometric. If G is k-dimensional geometric and H is l-dimensional geometric, then G x H is geometric of dimension (l+k). The product extends to a ring of chains which unlike the category of graphs is closed under boundary operation taking quotients G/A with A subset Aut(G). As we can glue graphs or chains, joins or fibre bundles can be defined with the same features as in the continuum, allowing to build isomorphism classes of bundles.

Representation stability for cohomology of configuration spaces in $\mathbf{R}^d$
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies representation stability in the sense of Church and Farb for representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of the configuration space of $n$ ordered points in $\mathbf{R}^d$. This cohomology is known to vanish outside of dimensions divisible by $d-1$; it is shown here that the $S_n$-representation on the $i(d-1)^{st}$ cohomology stabilizes sharply at $n=3i$ (resp. $n=3i+1$) when $d$ is odd (resp. even). The result comes from analyzing $S_n$-representations known to control the cohomology: the Whitney homology of set partition lattices for $d$ even, and the higher Lie representations for $d$ odd. A similar analysis shows that the homology of any rank-selected subposet in the partition lattice stabilizes by $n\geq 4i$, where $i$ is the maximum rank selected. Further properties of the Whitney homology and more refined stability statements for $S_n$-isotypic components are also proven, including conjectures of J. Wiltshire-Gordon.

Intersection cohomology of the symmetric reciprocal plane

We compute the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of the uniform matroid of rank n-1 on n elements by proving that the i-th coefficient of is equal to the number of ways to choose i non-intersecting chords in an (n-i+1)-gon. We also show that the corresponding intersection cohomology group is isomorphic to the irreducible representation of the symmetric group associated to the partition [n-2i,2,...,2].

The integer cohomology algebra of toric arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute the cohomology ring of the complement of a toric arrangement with integer coefficients and investigate its dependency from the arrangement's combinatorial data. To this end, we study a morphism of spectral sequences associated to certain combinatorially defined subcomplexes of the toric Salvetti category in the complexified case, and use a technical argument in order to extend the results to full generality. As a byproduct we obtain: -a "combinatorial" version of Brieskorn's lemma in terms of Salvetti complexes of complexified arrangements, -a uniqueness result for realizations of arithmetic matroids with at least one basis of multiplicity 1.

Dimension filtration, sequential Cohen--Macaulayness and a new polynomial invariant of graded algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\k$ be a field and let $A$ be a standard $\mathbb{N}$-graded $\k$-algebra. Using numerical information of some invariants in the primary decomposition of $0$ in $A$, namely the so called dimension filtration, we associate a bivariate polynomial $\BW(A;t,w)$, that we call the Björner--Wachs polynomial, to $A$. It is shown that the Björner--Wachs polynomial is an algebraic counterpart of the combinatorially defined $h$-triangle of finite simplicial complexes introduced by Björner \& Wachs. We provide a characterisation of sequentially Cohen--Macaulay algebras in terms of the effect of the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal on the Björner--Wachs polynomial. More precisely, we show that a graded algebra is sequentially Cohen--Macaulay if and only if it has a stable Björner--Wachs polynomial under passing to the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal. We conclude by discussing connections with the Hilbert series of local cohomology modules.

Sparse multivariate polynomial interpolation in the basis of Schubert polynomials
Published in Computational Complexity, 2017 Dec, 26(4), pp. 881-909 • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials were discovered by A. Lascoux and M. Schützenberger in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds in 1980's. These polynomials generalize Schur polynomials, and form a linear basis of multivariate polynomials. In 2003, Lenart and Sottile introduced skew Schubert polynomials, which generalize skew Schur polynomials, and expand in the Schubert basis with the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In this paper we initiate the study of these two families of polynomials from the perspective of computational complexity theory. We first observe that skew Schubert polynomials, and therefore Schubert polynomials, are in $\CountP$ (when evaluating on non-negative integral inputs) and $\VNP$. Our main result is a deterministic algorithm that computes the expansion of a polynomial $f$ of degree $d$ in $\Z[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in the basis of Schubert polynomials, assuming an oracle computing Schubert polynomials. This algorithm runs in time polynomial in $n$, $d$, and the bit size of the expansion. This generalizes, and derandomizes, the sparse interpolation algorithm of symmetric polynomials in the Schur basis by Barvinok and Fomin (Advances in Applied Mathematics, 18(3):271--285). In fact, our interpolation algorithm is general enough to accommodate any linear basis satisfying certain natural properties. Applications of the above results include a new algorithm that computes the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

FI_W-modules and constraints on classical Weyl group characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the characters of sequences of representations of any of the three families of classical Weyl groups W_n: the symmetric groups, the signed permutation groups (hyperoctahedral groups), or the even-signed permutation groups. Our results extend work of Church, Ellenberg, Farb, and Nagpal on the symmetric groups. We use the concept of an FI_W-module, an algebraic object that encodes the data of a sequence of W_n-representations with maps between them, defined in the author's recent work ArXiv:1309.3817. We show that if a sequence {V_n} of W_n-representations has the structure of a finitely generated FI_W-module, then there are substantial constraints on the growth of the sequence and the structure of the characters: for n large, the dimension of V_n is equal to a polynomial in n, and the characters of V_n are given by a character polynomial in signed-cycle-counting class functions, independent of n. We determine bounds the degrees of these polynomials. We continue to develop the theory of FI_W-modules, and we apply this theory to obtain new results about a number of sequences associated to the classical Weyl groups: the cohomology of complements of classical Coxeter hyperplane arrangements, and the cohomology of the pure string motion groups (the groups of symmetric automorphisms of the free group).

Toric chordality
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometric change of Chow cohomology classes in projective toric varieties under the Weil-McMullen dual of the intersection product with a Lefschetz element. Based on this, we introduce toric chordality, a generalization of graph chordality to higher skeleta of simplicial complexes with a coordinatization over characteristic 0, leading us to a far-reaching generalization of Kalai's work on applications of rigidity of frameworks to polytope theory. In contrast to "homological" chordality, the notion that is usually studied as a higher-dimensional analogue of graph chordality, we will show that toric chordality has several advantageous properties and applications. -- Most strikingly, we will see that toric chordality allows us to introduce a higher version of Dirac's propagation principle. -- Aside from the propagation theorem, we also study the interplay with the geometric properties of the simplicial chain complex of the underlying simplicial complex, culminating in a quantified version of the Stanley--Murai--Nevo generalized lower bound theorem. -- Finally, we apply our technique to give a simple proof of the generalized lower bound theorem in polytope theory and -- prove the balanced generalized lower bound conjecture of Klee and Novik.

Generalized Random Simplicial Complexes
We consider a multi-parameter model for randomly constructing simplicial complexes. This model interpolates between random clique complexes and Linial-Meshulam random $k$-dimensional complexes, two models that have been extensively studied. While these models asymptotically exhibit nontrivial cohomology in only one or two dimensions, we show that in this generalized setting nontrivial cohomology can occur in several dimensions simultaneously. We establish upper and lower thresholds for the appearance of nontrivial cohomology in a particular dimension, and in some instances characterize the behavior at criticality.

On the isotypic decomposition of cohomology modules of symmetric semi-algebraic sets: polynomial bounds on multiplicities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider symmetric (under the action of products of finite symmetric groups) real algebraic varieties and semi-algebraic sets, as well as symmetric complex varieties in affine and projective spaces, defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by a fixed constant $d$. We prove that if a Specht module, $\mathbb{S}^λ$, appears with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the cohomology modules of such sets, then the rank of the partition $λ$ is bounded by $O(d)$. This implies a polynomial (in the dimension of the ambient space) bound on the number of such modules. Furthermore, we prove a polynomial bound on the multiplicities of those that do appear with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the above mentioned cohomology modules. We give some applications of our methods in proving lower bounds on the degrees of defining polynomials of certain symmetric semi-algebraic sets, as well as improved bounds on the Betti numbers of the images under projections of (not necessarily symmetric) bounded real algebraic sets, improving in certain situations prior results of Gabrielov, Vorobjov and Zell.

Harmonic functions with finite $p$-energy on lamplighter graphs are constant
Published in Comptes Rendus Mathematique Volume 354, Issue 8, August 2016, Pages 762-765 • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this note is to show that lamplighter graphs where the space graph is infinite and at most two-ended and the lamp graph is at most two-ended do not admit harmonic functions with gradients in $\ell^p$ (\ie finite $p$-energy) for any $p\in [1,\infty[$ except constants (and, equivalently, that their reduced $\ell^p$ cohomology is trivial in degree one). Using similar arguments, it is also shown that many direct products of graphs (including all direct products of Cayley graphs) do not admit non-constant harmonic function with gradient in $\ell^p$. The proof relies on a theorem of Thomassen on spanning lines in squares of graphs.

A tropical approach to a generalized Hodge conjecture for positive currents
Published in Duke Math. J. 166, no. 14 (2017), 2749-2813 • View PublicationBIB
Demailly showed that the Hodge conjecture is equivalent to the statement that any (p,p)-dimensional closed current with rational cohomology class can be approximated by linear combinations of integration currents associated to subvarieties, and asked whether any strongly positive (p,p)-dimensional closed current with rational cohomology class can be approximated by positive linear combinations of integration currents associated to subvarieties. Using tropical geometry, we construct a (p,p)-dimensional current on a smooth projective variety that does not satisfy the latter statement.

Equivariant quantum cohomology of cotangent bundle of $G/P$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ denote a complex semisimple linear algebraic group, $P$ a parabolic subgroup of $G$ and $\mathcal{P}=G/P$. We identify the quantum multiplication by divisors in $T^*\mathcal{P}$ in terms of stable basis, which is introduced by Maulik and Okounkov. Using this and the restriction formula for stable basis, we show that the $G\times\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant quantum multiplication formula in $T^*\mathcal{P}$ is conjugate to the conjectured formula by Braverman.

The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We associate to every matroid M a polynomial with integer coefficients, which we call the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of M, in analogy with Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials in representation theory. We conjecture that the coefficients are always non-negative, and we prove this conjecture for representable matroids by interpreting our polynomials as intersection cohomology Poincare polynomials. We also introduce a q-deformation of the Mobius algebra of M, and use our polynomials to define a special basis for this deformation, analogous to the canonical basis of the Hecke algebra. We conjecture that the structure coefficients for multiplication in this special basis are non-negative, and we verify this conjecture in numerous examples.
