Dimers, crystals and quantum Kostka numbers
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire - FPSAC 2017, 78B.40, 12pp • Search Publication
We relate the counting of honeycomb dimer configurations on the cylinder to the counting of certain vertices in Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystal graphs. We show that these dimer configurations yield the quantum Kostka numbers of the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian, i.e. the expansion coefficients when multiplying a Schubert class repeatedly with different Chern classes. This allows one to derive sum rules for Gromov-Witten invariants.

Signatures of monic polynomials
To a univariate monic polynomial is attached a special planar forest that is called the picture of the polynomial. Isotopy classes of pictures are called signatures. All combinatorially possible signatures are realized and spaces of polynomials realizing a given signature are contractible. A finite cell complex for the cohomology of the braid groups is obtained.

On Incidence Algebras and their Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a unified approach, via deformations of incidence algebras, to several important types of representations with finiteness conditions, as well as the combinatorial algebras which produce them. We show that over finite dimensional algebras, representations with finitely many orbits, or finitely many invariant subspaces, or distributive coincide, and further coincide with thin modules in the acyclic case. Incidence algebras produce examples of such modules, and we show that algebras which are locally hereditary, and whose projective are distributive, or equivalently, which have finitely many ideals, are precisely the deformations of incidence algebras, and they are the finite dimensional algebra analogue of Pr${\rm \ddot{u}}$fer rings. New characterizations of incidence algebras are obtained, such as they are exactly algebras which have a faithful thin module. A main consequence is that "every thin module comes from an incidence algebra": if $V$ is either a thin module over a finite dimensional algebra $A$, or $V$ is distributive and $A$ is acyclic, then $A/{\rm ann}(V)$ is an incidence algebra and $V$ can be presented as its defining representation. We classify thin/distributive modules, and respectively deformations, of incidence algebras in terms of first and second cohomology of the simplicial realization of the poset. As a main application we obtain a complete classification of thin modules over any finite dimensional algebra. Their moduli spaces are multilinear varieties, and we show that any multilinear variety can be obtained in this way. A few other applications, to Grothendieck rings of combinatorial algebras, to graphs and their incidence matrices, to linear algebra (tori actions on matrices), and to a positive answer to the "no-gap conjecture" of Ringel and Bongartz, in the distributive case, are given. Other results in the literature are re-derived.

Appoximate Cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k$ be a field, $G$ be an abelian group and $r\in \mathbb N$. Let $L$ be an infinite dimensional $k$-vector space. For any $m\in End_k(L)$ we denote by $r(m)\in [0,\infty ]$ the rank of $m$. We define by $R(G,r,k)\in [0,\infty]$ the minimal $R$ such that for any map $A:G \to End_k(L)$ with $r(A(g'+g'')-A(g')-A(g''))\leq r$, $g',g''\in G$ there exists a homomorphism $χ:G\to End_k(L)$ such that $r(A(g)-χ(g))\leq R(G, r, k)$ for all $g\in G$. We show the finiteness of $R(G,r,k)$ for the case when $k$ is a finite field, $G=V$ is a $k$-vector space $V$ of countable dimension. We actually prove a generalization of this result. In addition we introduce a notion of {\it Approximate Cohomology} groups $H^k_{\mathcal F} (V,M)$ (which is a purely algebraic analogue of the notion of $ε$-representation (\cite{ep})) and interperate our result as a computation of the group $H^1_{\mathcal F} (V,M)$ for some $V$-modules $M$.

Cominuscule points and Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a cominuscule point in a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety for a semisimple group. We derive formulas expressing the Hilbert series and multiplicity of a Schubert variety at a cominuscule point in terms of the restrictions of classes in torus-equivariant K-theory and cohomology to that point, generalizing previously known formulas for flag varieties of cominuscule type. Thus, we can calculate Hilbert series and multiplicities in cases where these were previously unknown. The formulas for Schubert varieties are special cases of more general formulas valid at generalized cominuscule points of schemes with torus actions.

Springer fibers and Schubert points
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 76 (2019), pp. 10-26 • View PublicationBIB
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by partitions; they are central objects of study in geometric representation theory. Schubert varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety that induce a well-known basis for the cohomology of the flag variety. This paper relates these two varieties combinatorially. We prove that the Betti numbers of the Springer fiber associated to a partition with at most three rows or two columns are equal to the Betti numbers of a specific union of Schubert varieties.

On Garland's vanishing theorem for $\mathrm{SL}_n$
Published in European Journal of Mathematics 2 (2016), 579-613 • View PublicationBIB
This is an expository paper on Garland's vanishing theorem specialized to the case when the linear algebraic group is $\mathrm{SL}_n$. Garland's theorem can be stated as a vanishing of the cohomology groups of certain finite simplicial complexes. The method of the proof is quite interesting on its own. It relates the vanishing of cohomology to the assertion that the minimal positive eigenvalue of a certain combinatorial laplacian is sufficiently large. Since the 1970's, this idea has found applications in a variety of problems in representation theory, group theory, and combinatorics, so the paper might be of interest to a wide audience. The paper is intended for non-specialists and graduate students.

Lattice Spectral Sequences and Cohomology of Configuration Spaces
For a topological space $X$, we introduce a criterion for the $\rm FI$ module $H^i({\rm Conf}_n(X))$ to be finitely generated and give several applications. For instance, if $C$ is a finite connected $CW$ complex, then $X = C \times \mathbb{R}^2$ satisfies the criterion. Our main tool is a spectral sequence that we derive from the homological algebra of the partition lattice.

Plactic monoids: a braided approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young tableaux carry an associative product, described by the Schensted algorithm. They thus form a monoid $\mathbf{Pl}$, called \emph{plactic}. It is central in numerous combinatorial and algebraic applications. In this paper, the tableaux product is shown to be completely determined by a braiding $σ$ on the (much simpler!) set of columns $\mathbf{Col}$. Here a \emph{braiding} is a set-theoretic solution to the Yang--Baxter equation. As an application, we identify the Hochschild cohomology of $\mathbf{Pl}$, which resists classical approaches, with the more accessible braided cohomology of $(\mathbf{Col},σ)$. The cohomological dimension of $\mathbf{Pl}$ is obtained as a corollary. Also, the braiding~$σ$ is proved to commute with the classical crystal reflection operators~$s\_i$.

A representation-theoretic interpretation of positroid classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A positroid is the matroid of a real matrix with nonnegative maximal minors, a positroid variety is the closure of the locus of points in a complex Grassmannian whose matroid is a fixed positroid, and a positroid class is the cohomology class Poincaré dual to a positroid variety. We define a family of representations of general linear groups whose characters are symmetric polynomials representing positroid classes. These representations are certain diagram Schur modules in the sense of James and Peel. This gives a new algebraic interpretation of the Schubert structure constants for the product of a Schubert polynomial and Schur polynomial, and of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants for Grassmannians, proving a conjecture of Postnikov. As a byproduct, we obtain an effective algorithm for decomposing positroid classes into Schubert classes.

Species with potential arising from surfaces with orbifold points of order 2, Part II: arbitrary weights
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbfΣ=(Σ,M,O)$ be a surface with marked points and order-2 orbifold points which is either unpunctured or once-punctured closed, and $ω:O\rightarrow\{1,4\}$ a function. For each triangulation $τ$ of $\mathbfΣ$ we construct a cochain complex $C^\bullet(τ,ω)$. A colored triangulation is defined to be a pair consisting of a triangulation $τ$ and a 1-cocycle of $C^\bullet(τ,ω)$; the combinatorial notion of colored flip of colored triangulations is then defined as a refinement of the notion of flip of triangulations. Our main construction associates to each colored triangulation a species and a potential, and our main result shows that colored triangulations related by a colored flip have SPs related by the corresponding SP-mutation. We define the flip graph of $(Σ,M,O,ω)$, whose vertices are the pairs $(τ,x)$ with $τ$ a triangulation and $x$ a cohomology class in $H^1(C^\bullet(τ,ω))$, with an edge between $(τ,x)$ and $(σ,z)$ iff $(τ,ξ)$ and $(σ,ζ)$ are related by a colored flip for some cocycles $ξ$ and $ζ$ respectively representing $x$ and $z$. We prove that this graph is disconnected if $Σ$ is not contractible. For unpunctured surfaces we show that $(τ,ξ)$ and $(τ,ξ')$ yield isomorphic Jacobian algebras if and only if $[ξ]=[ξ']$ in cohomology. We prove that every SP-realization of any $(τ,ω)$ via a non-degenerate SP over a cyclic Galois extension with certain roots of unity is right-equivalent to one of the SPs we construct here. The species constructed here are species realizations of the $2^{|O|}$ skew-symmetrizable matrices assigned by Felikson-Shapiro-Tumarkin to any given $τ$. In the prequel to this paper we realized only one of these matrices via species, but therein we allowed the presence of arbitrarily many punctures.

Local Picard Group of Binoids and Their Algebras
We begin by introducing schemes of binoids, invertible $\mathcal{O}_M$-sets and cohomology of sheaves of abelian groups defined on schemes of binoids. We define the so-called punctured combinatorial Čech-Picard complex, whose first cohomology computes $\mathrm{Pic}^{\mathrm{loc}}(M)$, the local Picard group of a binoid. We look then at simplicial binoids, whose spectrum presents very nice combinatorial properties. We prove that the cohomology of a constant sheaf on this punctutured spectra can be computed entirely in terms of simplicial cohomology. Through some other results, we prove that we can compute cohomology of the sheaf of units (and thus the local Picard group) by meaning of reduced simplicial cohomology. We move from combinatorics to algebra and we try to use these tools to understand binoid algebras and cohomology of their sheaf of units. We introduce a new topology, that we call combinatorial topology on $\mathrm{Spec}\mathbb{K}[M]$. In this topology, if $M$ is a reduced, torsion-free and cancellative binoid, we can decompose the sheaf of units of its algebra in a direct sum of a constant part $\mathbb{K}^*$ and of the pushforward of the combinatorial units. We specialize to the case of the Stanley-Reisner rings, for which we are able to prove a vanishing result for the affine case. By meaning of the combinatorial topology we then prove that we can compute the Zariski cohomology of the sheaf of units entirely in terms of simplicial cohomology, both usual and reduced. This ultimately leads to a generalization to any monomial ideal, thus yielding us some purely combinatorial non-vanishing results for $\mathrm{Pic}^{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{K}[M])$ in the last Corollary.

Degrees of cohomological classes of multisinguliarities in Hurwitz spaces of rational functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main goal of the present paper are new formulae for degrees of strata in Hurwitz spaces of rational functions having two degenerate critical values with preimages of prescribed multiplicities. We consider the case where the multiplicities of the preimages of one critical value are arbitrary, while the second critical value has degeneracy of codimension~$1$. Our formulae are based on the universal cohomological expressions for codimension~$1$ strata in terms of certain basic cohomology classes in general Hurwitz spaces of rational functions obtained by M.~Kazarian and S.~Lando. We prove new relations valid in cohomology of Hurwitz spaces that were conjectured by M.~Kazarian on the base of computer experiments. As a corollary, we obtain new, previously unknown, explicit formulae for certain families of double Hurwitz numbers in genus~$0$. One may hope that the methods developed in the present paper are applicable to proving more general relations in cohomology rings of Hurwitz spaces and deducing more general formulae for double Hurwitz numbers.
Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a semisimple complex linear algebraic group $G$ and a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots of $G$, three objects arise: the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, and the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(S,I)$. We show that a certain graded ring derived from the logarithmic derivation module of $\mathcal{A}_I$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ and $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))^W$, the invariants in $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))$ under an action of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$. This isomorphism is shown for general Lie type, and generalizes Borel's celebrated theorem showing that the coinvariant algebra of $W$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the flag variety $G/B$. This surprising connection between Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements enables us to produce a number of interesting consequences. For instance, the surjectivity of the restriction map $H^*(G/B)\to H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ announced by Dale Peterson and an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Sommers-Tymoczko are immediate consequences. We also give an explicit ring presentation of $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ in types $B$, $C$, and $G$. Such a presentation was already known in type $A$ or when $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ is the Peterson variety. Moreover, we find the volume polynomial of $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ and see that the hard Lefschetz property and the Hodge-Riemann relations hold for $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, despite the fact that it is a singular variety in general.
Generating functions and statistics on spaces of maximal tori in classical Lie groups
Published in New York J. Math. 23 (2017) 165-191 • Search Publication
In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.

Additive Combinatorics Using Equivariant Cohomology
We introduce a geometric method to study additive combinatorial problems. Using equivariant cohomology we reprove the Dias da Silva-Hamidoune theorem. We improve a result of Sun on the linear extension of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We generalize a theorem of G. Kós (the Grashopper problem) which in some sense is a simultaneous generalization of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We also prove a signed version of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture and the Grashopper problem. Most identities used are based on calculating the projective degree of an algebraic variety in two different ways.

Transition formulas for involution Schubert polynomials
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 24 (2018) 2991-3025 • View PublicationBIB
The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.
Parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig basis, Schubert classes, and equivariant oriented cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the equivariant oriented cohomology ring $h_T(G/P)$ of partial flag varieties using the moment map approach. We define the right Hecke action on this cohomology ring, and then prove that the respective Bott-Samelson classes in $h_{T}(G/P)$ can be obtained by applying this action to the fundamental class of the identity point, hence generalizing previously known results by Brion, Knutson, Peterson, Tymoczko and others. We then focus on the equivariant oriented cohomology theory corresponding to the 2-parameter Todd genus. We give a new interpretation of Deodhar's construction of the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. Based on it, we define the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig (KL) Schubert classes independently of a reduced word. We make a positivity conjecture, and a conjecture about the relationship of such classes with smoothness of Schubert varieties. We then prove several special cases.

Restricting cohomology classes to disk and segment configuration spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The configuration space of n labeled disks of radius r inside the unit disk is denoted Conf_{n, r}(D^2). We study how the cohomology of this space depends on r. In particular, given a cohomology class of Conf_{n, 0}(D^2), for which r does its restriction to Conf_{n, r}(D^2) vanish? A related question: given the configuration space Seg_{n, r}(D^2) of n labeled, oriented segments of length r, it has a map to (S^1)^n that records the direction of each segment. For which r does this angle map have a continuous section? The paper consists of a collection of partial results, and it contains many questions and conjectures.

On Primes, Graphs and Cohomology
The counting function on the natural numbers defines a discrete Morse-Smale complex with a cohomology for which topological quantities like Morse indices, Betti numbers or counting functions for critical points of Morse index are explicitly given in number theoretical terms. The Euler characteristic of the Morse filtration is related to the Mertens function, the Poincaré-Hopf indices at critical points correspond to the values of the Moebius function. The Morse inequalities link number theoretical quantities like the prime counting functions relevant for the distribution of primes with cohomological properties of the graphs. The just given picture is a special case of a discrete Morse cohomology equivalent to simplicial cohomology. The special example considered here is a case where the graph is the Barycentric refinement of a finite simple graph.
