A Note on Ordinally Concave Functions
The notion of ordinal concavity of utility functions has recently been considered by Hafalir, Kojima, Yenmez, and Yokote in economics while there exist earlier related works in discrete optimization and operations research. In the present note we consider functions satisfying ordinal concavity and introduce a weaker notion of ordinal weak-concavity as well. We also investigate useful behaviors of ordinally (weak-)concave functions and related choice correspondences, show a characterization of ordinally weak-concave functions, and give an efficient algorithm for maximizing ordinally concave functions. We further examine a duality in ordinally (weak-)concave functions and introduce the lexicographic composition of ordinally weak-concave functions.

Bijections between Variants of Dyck Paths and Integer Compositions
Published in EPTCS 403, 2024, pp. 101-107 • View PublicationBIB
We give bijective results between several variants of lattice paths of length $2n$ (or $2n-2$) and integer compositions of n, all enumerated by the seemingly innocuous formula $4^{n-1}$. These associations lead us to make new connections between these objects, such as congruence results.

Multi-quasisymmetric functions with semigroup exponents, Hopf algebras and Rota-Baxter algebras
Many years ago, G.-C.~Rota discovered a close connection between symmetric functions and Rota-Baxter algebras, and proposed to study generalizations of symmetric functions in the framework of Rota-Baxter algebras. Guided by this proposal, quasisymmetric functions from weak composition (instead of just compositions) were obtained from free Rota-Baxter algebras on one generator. This paper aims to generalize this approach to free Rota-Baxter algebras on multiple generators in order to obtain further generalizations of quasisymmetric functions. For this purpose and also for its independent interest, the space $\mathrm{MQSym}$ of quasisymmetric functions on multiple sequences of variables is defined, generalizing quasisymmetric functions and diagonally quasisymmetric functions of Aval, Bergeron and Bergeron. Linear bases of such multi-quasisymmetric functions are given by monomial multi-quasisymmetric functions and fundamental multi-quasisymmetric functions, the latter recover the fundamental $G^m$-quasisymmetric functions of Aval and Chapoton. Next introduced is the even more general notion of multi-quasisymmetric functions $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$ with exponents in a semigroup $E$, which also generalizes the quasisymmetric functions with semigroup exponents in a recent work. Through this approach, a natural Hopf algebraic structure is obtained on $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$. Finally, in support of Rota's proposal, the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra on a finite set is shown to be isomorphic to a scalar extension of $\mathrm{MQSym}^E$, a fact which in turn equips the free Rota-Baxter algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

Chromatic symmetric functions of conjoined graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce path-conjoined graphs defined for two rooted graphs by joining their roots with a path, and investigate the chromatic symmetric functions of its two generalizations: spider-conjoined graphs and chain-conjoined graphs. By using the composition method developed by Zhou and the third author recently, we obtain neat positive $e_I$-expansions for the chromatic symmetric functions of clique-path-cycle graphs, path-clique-path graphs, and clique-clique-path graphs. We pose the $e$-positivity conjecture for hat-chains.

Quasisymmetric divided differences
We develop a quasisymmetric analogue of the combinatorial theory of Schubert polynomials and the associated divided difference operators. Our counterparts are "forest polynomials", and a new family of linear operators, whose theory of compositions is governed by forests and the "Thompson monoid". Our approach extends naturally to $m$-colored quasisymmetric functions. We then give several applications of our theory to fundamental quasisymmetric functions, the study of quasisymmetric coinvariant rings and their associated harmonics, and positivity results for various expansions. In particular we resolve a conjecture of Aval-Bergeron-Li regarding quasisymmetric harmonics.

Pfaffian Formulation of Schur's $Q$-functions
Published in J. Algebra 669 (2025) 1--25 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a Pfaffian formula that extends Schur's $Q$-functions $Q_λ$ to be indexed by compositions $λ$ with negative parts. This formula makes the Pfaffian construction more consistent with other constructions, such as the Young tableau and Vertex Operator constructions. With this construction, we develop a proof technique involving decomposing $Q_λ$ into sums indexed by partitions with removed parts. Consequently, we are able to prove several identities of Schur's $Q$-functions using only simple algebraic methods.
Symplectic duality via log topological recursion
Published in Communications in Number Theory and Physics, Volume 18 (2024) Number 4, pp. 795-841 • View PublicationBIB
We review the notion of symplectic duality earlier introduced in the context of topological recursion. We show that the transformation of symplectic duality can be expressed as a composition of $x-y$ dualities in a broader context of log topological recursion. As a corollary, we establish nice properties of symplectic duality: various convenient explicit formulas, invertibility, group property, compatibility with topological recursion and KP integrability. As an application of these properties, we get a new and uniform proof of topological recursion for large families of weighted double Hurwitz numbers; this encompasses and significantly extends all previously known results on this matter.

Quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions and peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explore the relationship between quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions and peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions. We introduce a bijection on $\mathsf{SPIT}(α)$ such that $\{\mathrm{w}_{\rm c}(T) \mid T \in \mathsf{SPIT}(α)\}$ and $\{\mathrm{w}_{\rm r}(T) \mid T \in \mathsf{SPIT}(α)\}$ share identical descent distributions. Here, $\mathsf{SPIT}(α)$ is the set of standard peak immaculate tableaux of shape $α$, and $\mathrm{w}_{\rm c}$ and $\mathrm{w}_{\rm r}$ denote column reading and row reading, respectively. By combining this equidistribution with the algorithm developed by Allen, Hallam, and Mason, we demonstrate that the transition matrix from the basis of quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions to the basis of peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions is upper triangular, with entries being non-negative integers. Furthermore, we provide explicit descriptions of the expansion of peak Young quasisymmetric Schur functions in specific cases, in terms of quasisymmetric Schur $Q$-functions. We also investigate the combinatorial properties of standard peak immaculate tableaux, standard Young composition tableaux, and standard peak Young composition tableaux. We provide a hook length formula for $\mathsf{SPIT}(α)$ and show that standard Young composition tableaux and standard peak Young composition tableaux can be bijectively mapped to specific words in a familiar form. Especially, cases of compositions with rectangular shape are examined in detail.
The spiders $S(4m+2,\,2m,\,1)$ are $e$-positive
By using the composition method, we establish the $e$-positivity of spiders of the form $S(4m+2,\, 2m,\, 1)$, which was conjectured by Aliniaeifard, van Willigenburg and Wang. Following the divide-and-conquer strategy, we group one or two $e_J$-terms that have positive coefficients with each $e_I$-term that has a negative coefficient, where the compositions $J$ are selected to be obtained by rearranging the parts of $I$, and show the positivity of the sum of those coefficients. Our main contribution is an explicit construction of the injection.

Even and odd compositions with restricted parts
A result of Legendre asserts that the difference between the numbers of (length) even and odd partitions of $n$ into distinct parts is $0$, $1$, or $-1$; this also follows from Euler's pentagonal number theorem. We establish an analogous result for compositions and obtain some generalizations that are related to various entries in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

All cycle-chords are $e$-positive
We establish the $e$-positivity of cycle-chord graphs by using the composition method which is developed by Zhou and the author recently. Our method is simpler than the $(e)$-positivity approach which is used for handling cycle-chords with girth at most $4$. We also provide a combinatorial interpretation of the $e$-coefficients, and conjecture that theta graphs are $e$-positive.

Operad structures on the species composition of two operads
We give an explicit description of three operad structures on the species composition $p \circ q$, where $q$ is any given positive operad, and where $p$ is the NAP operad, or a shuffle version of the magmatic operad Mag. No distributive law between $p$ and $q$ is assumed.

Colour-permuting automorphisms of complete Cayley graphs
Let $G$ be a (finite or infinite) group, and let $K_G = \mathrm{Cay} ( G;G \smallsetminus \{1\} )$ be the complete graph with vertex set $G$, considered as a Cayley graph of $G$. Being a Cayley graph, it has a natural edge-colouring by sets of the form $\{s, s^{-1}\}$ for $s \in G$. We prove that every colour-permuting automorphism of $K_G$ is an affine map, unless $G \cong Q_8 \times B$, where $Q_8$ is the quaternion group of order $8$, and $B$ is an abelian group, such that $b^2$ is trivial for all $b \in B$. We also prove (without any restriction on $G$) that every colour-permuting automorphism of $K_G$ is the composition of a group automorphism and a colour-preserving graph automorphism. This was conjectured by D.P.Byrne, M.J.Donner, and T.Q.Sibley in 2013.

Division properties of commuting polynomials
Polynomials commute under composition are referred to as commuting polynomials. In this paper, we study division properties for commuting polynomials with rational (and integer) coefficients. As a consequence, we show an algebraic particularity of the commuting polynomials coming from weighted sums for cycle graphs with pendant edges (arXiv:2402.07209v1.).
Multinomial random combinatorial structures and $r$-versions of Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers
We introduce multinomial and $r$-variants of several classic objects of combinatorial probability, such as the random recursive and Hoppe trees, random set partitions and compositions, the Chinese restaurant process, Feller's coupling, and some others. Just as various classic combinatorial numbers - like Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers - emerge as essential ingredients defining the distributions of the mentioned processes, the so-called $r$-versions of these numbers appear in exact distributional formulas for the multinomial and $r$-counterparts. This approach allows us to offer a concise probabilistic interpretation for various identities involving $r$-versions of these combinatorial numbers, which were either unavailable or meaningful only for specific values of the parameter $r$. We analyze the derived distributions for fixed-size structures and establish distributional limit theorems as the size tends to infinity. Utilizing the aforementioned generalized Stirling numbers of both kinds, we define and analyze $(r,s)$-Lah distributions, which have arisen in the existing literature on combinatorial probability in various contexts.

The inhomogeneous $t$-PushTASEP and Macdonald polynomials
We study a multispecies $t$-PushTASEP system on a finite ring of $n$ sites with site-dependent rates $x_1,\dots,x_n$. Let $λ=(λ_1,\dots,λ_n)$ be a partition whose parts represent the species of the $n$ particles on the ring. We show that for each composition $η$ obtained by permuting the parts of $λ$, the stationary probability of being in state $η$ is proportional to the ASEP polynomial $F_η(x_1,\dots,x_n; q,t)$ at $q=1$; the normalizing constant (or partition function) is the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(x_1,\dots,x_n;q,t)$ at $q=1$. Our approach involves new relations between the families of ASEP polynomials and of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials at $q=1$. We also use multiline diagrams, showing that a single jump of the PushTASEP system is closely related to the operation of moving from one line to the next in a multiline diagram. We derive symmetry properties for the system under permutation of its jump rates, as well as a formula for the current of a single-species system.
Bijections between colored compositions, Dyck paths, and polygon partitions
Published in J. Integer Seq. 27 (2024), no. 1, Article 24.5.2 • Search Publication
In this paper, we give part-preserving bijections between three fundamental families of objects that serve as natural framework for many problems in enumerative combinatorics. Specifically, we consider compositions, Dyck paths, and partitions of a convex polygon, and identify suitable building blocks that are then appropriately decorated to achieve matching cardinalities. Our bijections are constructive and apply for the general case where the building blocks are allowed to come in different colors.
On the Lucky and Displacement Statistics of Stirling Permutations
Stirling permutations are parking functions, and we investigate two parking function statistics in the context of these objects: lucky cars and displacement. Among our results, we consider two extreme cases: extremely lucky Stirling permutations (those with maximally many lucky cars) and extremely unlucky Stirling permutations (those with exactly one lucky car). We show that the number of extremely lucky Stirling permutations of order $n$ is the Catalan number $C_n$, and the number of extremely unlucky Stirling permutations is $(n-1)!$. We also give some results for luck that lies between these two extremes. Further, we establish that the displacement of any Stirling permutation of order $n$ is $n^2$, and we prove several results about displacement composition vectors. We conclude with directions for further study.

Rigid Matroid Categories
We consider three forms of composition of matroids, each of which extends the category of bimatroids to a rigid monoidal category. Many well-known constructions are functorial or defined by morphisms in these categories. Motivating examples include: deletion and contraction, 2-sum, series and parallel connections, the Tutte polynomial, gammoids, positroids, matroids representable over an infinite field, M-convex sets, and matroids associated to stable polynomials.

A group action on cyclic compositions and $γ$-positivity
Let $w_{n,k,m}$ be the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ with $k$ occurrences of $UD$ and $m$ occurrences of $UUD$. We establish in two ways a new interpretation of the numbers $w_{n,k,m}$ in terms of plane trees and internal nodes. The first way builds on a new characterization of plane trees that involves cyclic compositions. The second proof utilizes a known interpretation of $w_{n,k,m}$ in terms of plane trees and leaves, and a recent involution on plane trees constructed by Li, Lin, and Zhao. Moreover, a group action on the set of cyclic compositions (or equivalently, $2$-dominant compositions) is introduced, which amounts to give a combinatorial proof of the $γ$-positivity of the Narayana polynomial, as well as the $γ$-positivity of the polynomial $W_{2k+1,k}(t):=\sum_{1\le m\le k}w_{2k+1,k,m}t^m$ previously obtained by Bóna et al, with apparently new combinatorial interpretations of their $γ$-coefficients.
