A Pieri-type formula for the K-theory of a flag manifold
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 359 (2007), 2317--2342. • View PublicationBIB
We derive explicit Pieri-type multiplication formulas in the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety. These expand the product of an arbitrary Schubert class and a special Schubert class in the basis of Schubert classes. These special Schubert classes are indexed by a cycle which has either the form (k-p+1,k-p+2,...,k+1) or the form (k+p,k+p-1,...,k), and are pulled back from a Grassmannian projection. Our formulas are in terms of certain labeled chains in the k-Bruhat order on the symmetric group and are combinatorial in that they involve no cancellations. We also show that the multiplicities in the Pieri formula are naturally certain binomial coefficients.

Linear conditions imposed on flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study subvarieties of the flag variety called Hessenberg varieties, defined by certain linear conditions. These subvarieties arise naturally in applications including geometric representation theory, number theory, and numerical analysis. We describe completely the homology of Hessenberg varieties over GL_n(C) and show that they have no odd-dimensional homology. We provide an explicit geometric construction which partitions each Hessenberg variety into pieces homeomorphic to affine space. We characterize these affine pieces by fillings of Young tableaux and show that the dimension of the affine piece can be computed by combinatorial rules generalizing the Eulerian numbers. We give an equivalent formulation of this result in terms of roots. We conclude with a section on open questions.

Affine Hecke algebras and the Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using a combinatorial approach which avoids geometry, this paper studies the ring structure of K_T(G/B), the T-equivariant K-theory of the (generalized) flag variety G/B. Here the data is a complex reductive algebraic group (or symmetrizable Kac-Moody group) G, a Borel subgroup B, and a maximal torus T, and K_T(G/B) is the Grothendieck group of T-equivariant coherent sheaves on G/B. We prove "Pieri-Chevalley" formulas for the products of a Schubert class by a homogeneous line bundle (dominant or anti-dominant) and for products of a Schubert class by a codimension 1 Schubert class. All of these Pieri-Chevalley formulas are given in terms of the combinatorics of the Littelmann path model. We give explicit computations of products of Schubert classes for the rank two cases and this data allows us to make a "positivity conjecture" generalizing the theorems of Brion and Graham, which treat the cases K(G/B) and H_T^*(G/B), respectively.

A Unified Approach to Combinatorial Formulas for Schubert Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials were introduced in the context of the geometry of flag varieties. This paper investigates some of the connections not yet understood between several combinatorial structures for the construction of Schubert polynomials; we also present simplifications in some of the existing approaches to this area. We designate certain line diagrams known as rc-graphs as the main structure. The other structures in the literature we study include: semistandard Young tableaux, Kohnert diagrams, and balanced labelings of the diagram of a permutation. The main tools in our investigation are certain operations on rc-graphs, which correspond to the coplactic operations on tableaux, and thus define a crystal graph structure on rc-graphs; a new definition of these operations is presented. One application of these operations is a straightforward, purely combinatorial proof of a recent formula (due to Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Yong), which expresses Schubert polynomials in terms of products of Schur polynomials. In spite of the fact that it refers to many objects and results related to them, the paper is mostly self-contained.

The K-theory of the Flag Variety and the Fomin-Kirillov Quadratic Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a new approach to the multiplication of Schubert classes in the K-theory of the flag variety. This extends the work of Fomin and Kirillov in the cohomology case, and is based on the quadratic algebra defined by them. More precisely, we define K-theoretic versions of the Dunkl elements considered by Fomin and Kirillov, show that they commute, and use them to describe the structure constants of the K-theory of the flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes.

Noncommutative algebras related with Schubert calculus on Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ we construct a certain noncommutative algebra, so-called {\it bracket algebra}, together with a familiy of commuting elements, so-called {\it Dunkl elements.} Dunkl elements conjecturally generate an algebra which is canonically isomorphic to the coinvariant algebra of the group $W.$ We prove this conjecture for classical Coxeter groups and $I_2(m)$. We define a ``quantization'' and a multiparameter deformation of our construction and show that for Lie groups of classical type and $G_2,$ the algebra generated by Dunkl elements in the quantized bracket algebra is canonically isomorphic to the small quantum cohomology ring of the corresponding flag variety, as described by B. Kim. For crystallographic Coxeter systems we define {\it quantum Bruhat representation} of the corresponding bracket algebra. We study in more detail relations and structure of $B_n$-, $D_n$- and $G_2$-bracket algebras, and as an application, discover {\it Pieri type formula} in the $B_n$-bracket algebra. As a corollary, we obtain Pieri type formula for multiplication of arbitrary $B_n$-Schubert classes by some special ones. Our Pieri type formula is a generalization of Pieri's formulas obtained by A. Lascoux and M.-P. Schützenberger for flag varieties of type $A.$ We also introduce a super-version of the bracket algebra together with a family of pairwise anticommutative elements which describes ``noncommutative differential geometry on a finite Coxeter group'' in a sense of S. Majid.

Affine Weyl groups in K-theory and representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit combinatorial Chevalley-type formula for the equivariant K-theory of generalized flag varieties G/P which is a direct generalization of the classical Chevalley formula. Our formula implies a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible representations of G and, more generally, for the Demazure characters. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart of the Littelmann path model, and has several advantages. Our construction is given in terms of a certain R-matrix, that is, a collection of operators satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. It reduces to combinatorics of decompositions in the affine Weyl group and enumeration of saturated chains in the Bruhat order on the (nonaffine) Weyl group. Our model easily implies several symmetries of the coefficients in the Chevalley-type formula. We also derive a simple formula for multiplying an arbitrary Schubert class by a divisor class, as well as a dual Chevalley-type formula. The paper contains other applications and examples.

A geometric Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe an explicit geometric Littlewood-Richardson rule, interpreted as deforming the intersection of two Schubert varieties so that they break into Schubert varieties. There are no restrictions on the base field, and all multiplicities arising are 1; this is important for applications. This rule should be seen as a generalization of Pieri's rule to arbitrary Schubert classes, by way of explicit homotopies. It has a straightforward bijection to other Littlewood-Richardson rules, such as tableaux, and Knutson and Tao's puzzles. This gives the first geometric proof and interpretation of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. It has a host of geometric consequences, described in the companion paper "Schubert induction". The rule also has an interpretation in K-theory, suggested by Buch, which gives an extension of puzzles to K-theory. The rule suggests a natural approach to the open question of finding a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the flag variety, leading to a conjecture, shown to be true up to dimension 5. Finally, the rule suggests approaches to similar open problems, such as Littlewood-Richardson rules for the symplectic Grassmannian and two-flag varieties.

Decomposing Hessenberg varieties over classical groups
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety, including the Springer fibers, the Peterson variety, and the entire flag variety itself. The seminal example arises from a problem in numerical analysis and consists for a fixed linear operator M of the full flags V_1 \subsetneq V_2 >... \subsetneq V_n in GL_n with M V_i contained in V_{i+1} for all i. In this paper I show that all Hessenberg varieties in type A_n and semisimple and regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in types B_n,C_n, and D_n can be paved by affine spaces. Moreover, this paving is the intersection of a particular Bruhat decomposition with the Hessenberg variety. In type A_n, an equivalent description of the cells of the paving in terms of certain fillings of a Young diagram can be used to compute the Betti numbers of Hessenberg varieties. As an example, I show that the Poincare polynomial of the Peterson variety in A_n is \sum_{i =0}^{n-1} \binom{n-1}{i} x^{2i}.

Skew Schubert polynomials
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 131 (2003), 3319-3328. • View PublicationBIB
We define skew Schubert polynomials to be normal form (polynomial) representatives of certain classes in the cohomology of a flag manifold. We show that this definition extends a recent construction of Schubert polynomials due to Bergeron and Sottile in terms of certain increasing labeled chains in Bruhat order of the symmetric group. These skew Schubert polynomials expand in the basis of Schubert polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients that are precisely the structure constants of the cohomology of the complex flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes. We rederive the construction of Bergeron and Sottile in a purely combinatorial way, relating it to the construction of Schubert polynomials in terms of rc-graphs.

The cohomology ring of weight varieties and polygon spaces

We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to find explicit formulæfor the rational cohomology rings of the symplectic reduction of flag varieties in C^n, or generic coadjoint orbits of SU(n), by (maximal) torus actions. We also calculate the cohomology ring of the moduli space of $n$ points in CP^k, which is isomorphic to the Grassmannian of k-planes in C^n, by realizing it as a degenerate coadjoint orbit.

Bruhat order for two flags and a line
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Ehresmann-Bruhat order describes the possible degenerations of a pair of flags in a linear space V under linear transformations of V; or equivalently, it describes the closure of an orbit of GL(V) acting diagonally on the product of two flag varieties. We consider the degenerations of a triple consisting of two flags and a line, or equivalently the closure of an orbit of GL(V) acting diagonally on the product of two flag varieties and a projective space. We give a simple rank criterion to decide whether one triple can degenerate to another. We also classify the minimal degenerations, which involve not only reflections (i.e., transpositions) in the Weyl group S_n, n=dim(V), but also cycles of arbitrary length. Our proofs use only elementary linear algebra and combinatorics.

Totally positive Toeplitz matrices and quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the set of totally positive unipotent lower-triangular Toeplitz matrices in $GL_n$ form a real semi-algebraic cell of dimension $n-1$. Furthermore we prove a natural cell decomposition for its closure. The proof uses properties of the quantum cohomology rings of the partial flag varieties of $GL_n(\C)$ relying in particular on the positivity of the structure constants, which are enumerative Gromov--Witten invariants. We also give a characterization of total positivity for Toeplitz matrices in terms of the (quantum) Schubert classes. This work builds on some results of Dale Peterson's which we explain with proofs in the type $A$ case.

Flag varieties and interpretations of Young tableau algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(P,Q)$ under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Other constructions for which we give interpretations are Schützenberger's involution of the set of Young tableaux, jeu de taquin (leading also to an interpretation of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients), and the transpose Robinson-Schensted correspondence (defined using column insertion). In each case we use a doubly indexed family of partitions, defined in terms of the flag (or pair of flags) determined by a point chosen in the variety under consideration. We show that for generic choices, the family satisfies certain combinatorial relations, whence the family describes the computation of the algorithmic operation being interpreted, as we described in a previous publication.
