Let G be a simply-connected simple compact Lie group over the complex numbers. The affine Grassmannian is a projective ind-variety, homotopy-equivalent to the loop space of G and closely analogous to a maximal flag variety of the classical Grassmannian manifold. It has a Schubert cell decomposition indexed by the coroot lattice or equivalently by the minimal length coset representatives for the affine Weyl group modulo the Weyl group for G. The closure of an affine Schubert cell is a finite dimensional projective variety that we call an affine Schubert variety. In this paper we completely determine the smooth and palindromic (rationally smooth) affine Schubert varieties.

Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety that arise in number theory, numerical analysis, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. We give a "Giambelli formula" expressing the classes of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in terms of Chern classes. In fact, we show that the cohomology class of each regular semisimple Hessenberg variety is the specialization of a certain double Schubert polynomial, giving a natural geometric interpretation to such specializations. We also decompose such classes in terms of the Schubert basis for the cohomology ring of the flag variety. The coefficients obtained are nonnegative, and we give closed combinatorial formulas for the coefficients in many cases. We introduce a closely related family of schemes called regular nilpotent Hessenberg schemes, and use our results to determine when such schemes are reduced.
Block-Toeplitz determinants, chess tableaux, and the type $\hat{A_1}$ Geiss-Leclerc-Schroer $φ$-map
We evaluate the Geiss-Leclerc-Schroer $φ$-map for shape modules over the preprojective algebra $Λ$ of type $\hat{A_1}$ in terms of matrix minors arising from the block-Toeplitz representation of the loop group $\SL_2(\mathcal{L})$. Conjecturally these minors are among the cluster variables for coordinate rings of unipotent cells within $\SL_2(\mathcal{L})$. In so doing we compute the Euler characteristic of any generalized flag variety attached to a shape module by counting standard tableaux of requisite shape and parity; alternatively by counting chess tableaux of requisite shape and content.

This survey paper describes two geometric representations of the permutation group using the tools of toric topology. These actions are extremely useful for computational problems in Schubert calculus. The (torus) equivariant cohomology of the flag variety is constructed using the combinatorial description of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson, discussed in detail. Two permutation representations on equivariant and ordinary cohomology are identified in terms of irreducible representations of the permutation group. We show how to use the permutation actions to construct divided difference operators and to give formulas for some localizations of certain equivariant classes.
This paper includes several new results, in particular a new proof of the Chevalley-Monk formula and a proof that one of the natural permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of the flag variety is the regular representation. Many examples, exercises, and open questions are provided.

We introduce a theory of jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux, extending fundamental work of [Schützenberger '77] for standard Young tableaux. We apply this to give a new combinatorial rule for the K-theory Schubert calculus of Grassmannians via K-theoretic jeu de taquin, providing an alternative to the rules of [Buch '02] and others. This rule naturally generalizes to give a conjectural root-system uniform rule for any minuscule flag variety G/P, extending [Thomas-Yong '06]. We also present analogues of results of Fomin, Haiman, Schensted and Schützenberger.

Let G be a simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group, P \subset G a parabolic subgroup. We prove an unpublished result of D. Peterson which states that the quantum cohomology QH^*(G/P) of a flag variety is, up to localization, a quotient of the homology H_*(Gr_G) of the affine Grassmannian \Gr_G of G. As a consequence, all three-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of $G/P$ are identified with homology Schubert structure constants of H_*(Gr_G), establishing the equivalence of the quantum and homology affine Schubert calculi.
For the case G = B, we use the Mihalcea's equivariant quantum Chevalley formula for QH^*(G/B), together with relationships between the quantum Bruhat graph of Brenti, Fomin and Postnikov and the Bruhat order on the affine Weyl group. As byproducts we obtain formulae for affine Schubert homology classes in terms of quantum Schubert polynomials. We give some applications in quantum cohomology.
Our main results extend to the torus-equivariant setting.
Bruhat order for two subspaces and a flag
The classical Ehresmann-Bruhat order describes the possible degenerations of a pair of flags in a finite-dimensional vector space V; or, equivalently, the closure of an orbit of the group GL(V) acting on the direct product of two full flag varieties.
We obtain a similar result for triples consisting of two subspaces and a partial flag in V; this is equivalent to describing the closure of a GL(V)-orbit in the product of two Grassmannians and one flag variety. We give a rank criterion to check whether such a triple can be degenerated to another one, and we classify the minimal degenerations. Our methods involve only elementary linear algebra and combinatorics of graphs (originating in Auslander-Reiten quivers).

For a connected semisimple algebraic group $G$, we consider some special infinite series of tensor products of simple $G$-modules whose
$G$-fixed point spaces are at most one-dimensional. We prove that their existence is closely related to the existence of open $G$-orbits in multiple flag varieties and address the problem of classifying such series.
Quantum Grothendieck Polynomials
Quantum K-theory is a K-theoretic version of quantum cohomology, which was recently defined by Y.-P. Lee. Based on a presentation for the quantum K-theory of the classical flag variety Fl_n, we define and study quantum Grothendieck polynomials. We conjecture that they represent Schubert classes (i.e., the natural basis elements) in the quantum K-theory of Fl_n, and present strong evidence for this conjecture. We describe an efficient algorithm which, if the conjecture is true, computes the quantum K-invariants of Gromov-Witten type for Fl_n. Two explicit constructions for quantum Grothendieck polynomials are presented. The natural generalizations of several properties of Grothendieck polynomials and of the quantum Schubert polynomials due to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov are proved for our quantum Grothendieck polynomials. For instance, we use a quantization map satisfying a factorization property similar to the cohomology quantization map, and we derive a Monk-type multiplication formula. We also define quantum double Grothendieck polynomials and derive a Cauchy identity. Our constructions are considerably more complex than those for quantum Schubert polynomials. In particular, a crucial ingredient in our work is the Pieri formula for Grothendieck polynomials due to the first author and Sottile.

The necessary and sufficient Horn inequalities which determine the non-vanishing Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in the cohomology of a Grassmannian are recursive in that they are naturally indexed by non-vanishing Littlewood-Richardson coefficients on smaller Grassmannians. We show how non-vanishing in the Schubert calculus for cominuscule flag varieties is similarly recursive. For these varieties, the non-vanishing of products of Schubert classes is controlled by the non-vanishing products on smaller cominuscule flag varieties. In particular, we show that the lists of Schubert classes whose product is non-zero naturally correspond to the integer points in the feasibility polytope, which is defined by inequalities coming from non-vanishing products of Schubert classes on smaller cominuscule flag varieties. While the Grassmannian is cominuscule, our necessary and sufficient inequalities are different than the classical Horn inequalities.

We consider certain modules of the symmetric groups whose basis elements are called tabloids. Some of these modules are isomorphic to subspaces of the cohomology rings of subvarieties of flag varieties as modules of the symmetric groups. We give a combinatorial description for some weighted sums of their characters, i.e., we introduce combinatorial objects called $(ρ,\Ll)$-tabloids and rewrite weighted sums of characters as the numbers of these combinatorial objects. We also consider the meaning of these combinatorial objects, i.e., we construct a correspondence between $(ρ,\Ll)$-tabloids and tabloids whose images are eigenvectors of the action of an element of cycle type $ρ$ in quotient modules.

Fomin and Kirillov initiated a line of research into the realization of the cohomology and $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties $G/B$ as commutative subalgebras of certain noncommutative algebras. This approach has several advantages, which we discuss. This paper contains the most comprehensive result in a series of papers related to the mentioned line of research. More precisely, we give a model for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $K_T(G/B)$ in terms of a certain braided Hopf algebra called the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra. Our model is based on the Chevalley-type multiplication formula for $K_T(G/B)$ due to the first author and Postnikov; this formula is stated using certain operators defined in terms of so-called alcove paths (and the corresponding affine Weyl group). Our model is derived using a type-independent and concise approach.

Motivated by recent developments on visible actions on complex manifolds, we raise a question whether or not the multiplication of three subgroups $L$, $G'$ and $H$ surjects a Lie group $G$ in the setting that $G/H$ carries a complex structure and contains $G'/G' \cap H$ as a totally real submanifold.
Particularly important cases are when $G/L$ and $G/H$ are generalized flag varieties, and we classify pairs of Levi subgroups $(L, H)$ such that $L G' H = G$, or equivalently, the real generalized flag variety $G'/H \cap G'$ meets every $L$-orbit on the complex generalized flag variety $G/H$ in the setting that $(G, G') = (U(n), O(n))$.
For such pairs $(L, H)$, we introduce a \textit{herringbone stitch} method to find a generalized Cartan decomposition for the double coset space $L \backslash G/H$, for which there has been no general theory in the non-symmetric case.
Our geometric results provides a unified proof of various multiplicity-free theorems in representation theory of general linear groups.
The Horn recursion for Schur P- and Q- functions: Extended Abstract
A consequence of work of Klyachko and of Knutson-Tao is the Horn recursion to determine when a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero. Briefly, a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient is non-zero if and only if it satisfies a collection of Horn inequalities which are indexed by smaller non-zero Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. There are similar Littlewood-Richardson numbers for Schur P- and Q- functions. Using a mixture of combinatorics of root systems, combinatorial linear algebra in Lie algebras, and the geometry of certain cominuscule flag varieties, we give Horn recursions to determine when these other Littlewood-Richardson numbers are non-zero. Our inequalities come from the usual Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and while we give two very different Horn recursions, they have the same sets of solutions. Another combinatorial by-product of this work is a new Horn-type recursion for the usual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
Hessenberg varieties are not pure dimensional

We study a family of subvarieties of the flag variety defined by certain linear conditions, called Hessenberg varieties. We compare them to Schubert varieties. We prove that some Schubert varieties can be realized as Hessenberg varieties and vice versa. Our proof explicitly identifies these Schubert varieties by their permutation and computes their dimension.
We use this to answer an open question by proving that Hessenberg varieties are not always pure dimensional. We give examples that neither semisimple nor nilpotent Hessenberg varieties need be pure; the latter are connected, non-pure-dimensional Hessenberg varieties. Our methods require us to generalize the definition of Hessenberg varieties.

This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Veronese, and some determinantal cases.

In this paper we study the partially ordered set Q^J of cells in Rietsch's cell decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of an arbitrary flag variety P^J_{\geq 0}. Our goal is to understand the geometry of P^J_{\geq 0}: Lusztig has proved that this space is contractible, but it is unknown whether the closure of each cell is contractible, and whether P^J_{\geq 0} is homeomorphic to a ball. The order complex |Q^J| is a simplicial complex which can be thought of as a combinatorial approximation of P^J_{\geq 0}. Using combinatorial tools such as Bjorner's EL-labellings and Dyer's reflection orders, we prove that Q^J is graded, thin and EL-shellable. As a corollary, we deduce that Q^J is Eulerian and that the Euler characteristic of the closure of each cell is 1. Additionally, our results imply that |Q^J| is homeomorphic to a ball, and moreover, that Q^J is the face poset of some regular CW complex homeomorphic to a ball.
On some noncommutative algebras related to K-theory of flag varieties, part I
For any Lie algebra of classical type or type $G_2$ we define a $K$-theoretic analog of Dunkl's elements, the so-called truncated {\it Ruijsenaars-Schneider-Macdonald elements}, $RSM$-elements for short, in the corresponding {\it Yang-Baxter group}, which form a commuting family of elements in the latter. For the root systems of type $A$ we prove that the subalgebra of the {\it bracket algebra} generated by the RSM-elements is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the flag variety. In general, we prove that the subalgebra generated by the {\it images} of the RSM-elements in the corresponding {\it Nichols-Woronowicz algebra} is canonically isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the corresponding flag varieties of classical type or of type $G_2$. In other words, we construct the ``Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model'' for the Grothendieck Calculus on Weyl groups of classical type or type $G_2,$ providing a partial generalization of some recent results by Y. Bazlov. We also give a conjectural description (theorem for type $A$) of a commutative subalgebra generated by the {\it truncated RSM-elements} in the bracket algebra for the classical root systems. Our results provide a proof and generalizations of recent conjecture and result by C. Lenart and A. Yong for the root system of type $A$.

We define a new family of symmetric functions which are affine analogues of Stanley symmetric functions. We establish basic properties of these functions including symmetry, dominance and conjugation. We conjecture certain positivity properties in terms of a subfamily of symmetric functions called affine Schur functions. As applications, we show how affine Stanley symmetric functions generalise the (dual of the) $k$-Schur functions of Lapointe, Lascoux and Morse as well as the cylindric Schur functions of Postnikov. Conjecturally, affine Stanley symmetric functions should be related to the cohomology of the affine flag variety.
