A superpotential for Grassmannian Schubert varieties
While mirror symmetry for flag varieties and Grassmannians has been extensively studied, Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian are singular, and hence standard mirror symmetry statements are not well-defined. Nevertheless, in this article we introduce a ``superpotential'' $W^λ$ for each Grassmannian Schubert variety $X_λ$, generalizing the Marsh-Rietsch superpotential for Grassmannians, and we show that $W^λ$ governs many toric degenerations of $X_λ$. We also generalize the ``polytopal mirror theorem'' for Grassmannians from our previous work: namely, for any cluster seed $G$ for $X_λ$, we construct a corresponding Newton-Okounkov convex body $Δ_G^λ$, and show that it coincides with the superpotential polytope $Γ_G^λ$, that is, it is cut out by the inequalities obtained by tropicalizing an associated Laurent expansion of $W^λ$. This gives us a toric degeneration of the Schubert variety $X_λ$ to the (singular) toric variety $Y(\mathcal{N}_λ)$ of the Newton-Okounkov body. Finally, for a particular cluster seed $G=G^λ_{\mathrm{rec}}$ we show that the toric variety $Y(\mathcal{N}_λ)$ has a small toric desingularisation, and we describe an intermediate partial desingularisation $Y(\mathcal{F}_λ)$ that is Gorenstein Fano. Many of our results extend to more general varieties in the Grassmannian.
Cluster structures on spinor helicity and momentum twistor varieties
We study the homogeneous coordinate rings of partial flag varieties and Grassmannians in their Plücker embeddings and exhibit an embedding of the former into the latter. Both rings are cluster algebras and the embedding respects the cluster algebra structures in the sense that there exists a seed for the Grassmannian that restricts to a seed for the partial flag variety (\textit{i.e.} it is obtained by freezing and deleting some cluster variables).
The motivation for this project stems from the application of cluster algebras in scattering amplitudes: spinor helicity and momentum twistor varieties describe massless scattering without assuming dual conformal symmetry. Both may be obtained from Grassmanninas which model the dual conformal case. They are instances of partial flag varieties and their cluster structures reveal information for the scattering amplitudes. As an application of our main result we exhibit the relation between these cluster algebras.

We show that interlacing triangular arrays, introduced by Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler to study certain probability measures, can be used to compute structure constants for multiplying Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians, in the cohomology of their cotangent bundles, and in the cohomology of partial flag varieties. Our results are achieved by establishing a splitting lemma, allowing for interlacing triangular arrays of high rank to be decomposed into arrays of lower rank, and by constructing a bijection between interlacing triangular arrays of rank 3 with certain proper vertex colorings of the triangular grid graph that factors through generalizations of Knutson-Tao puzzles. Along the way, we prove one enumerative conjecture of Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler and disprove another.
Minimal semisimple Hessenberg schemes
We study a collection of Hessenberg varieties in the type A flag variety associated to a nonzero semisimple matrix whose conjugacy class has minimal dimension. We prove each such minimal semisimple Hessenberg variety is a union Richardson varieties and compute this set of Richardson varieties explicitly. Our methods leverage the notion of matrix Hessenberg schemes to answer questions about the geometry of minimal semisimple Hessenberg varieties using commutative algebra and known results on Schubert determinantal ideals. In particular, we show that all type A minimal semisimple matrix Hessenberg schemes are reduced.
Grothendieck Shenanigans: Permutons from pipe dreams via integrable probability
We study random permutations arising from reduced pipe dreams. Our main model is motivated by Grothendieck polynomials with parameter $β=1$ arising in K-theory of the flag variety. The probability weight of a permutation is proportional to the principal specialization (setting all variables to 1) of the corresponding Grothendieck polynomial. By mapping this random permutation to a version of TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), we describe the limiting permuton and fluctuations around it as the order $n$ of the permutation grows to infinity. The fluctuations are of order $n^{\frac13}$ and have the Tracy-Widom GUE distribution, which places this algebraic (K-theoretic) model into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.
We also investigate non-reduced pipe dreams and make progress on a recent open problem on the asymptotic number of inversions of the resulting permutation. Inspired by Stanley's question for the maximal value of principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, we resolve the analogous question for $β=1$ Grothendieck polynomials, and provide bounds for general $β$.
Birational maps, PBW degenerate flags and poset polytopes
We extend the results on the graph closures of the birational maps between projective spaces and Grassmannians to the case of PBW degenerate flag varieties. The advantage of the PBW degenerate flags (as opposed to their classical analogues) is the existence of a large group of symmetries for the graph closures. We discuss the combinatorial, algebraic and geometric sides of the picture. In particular, we show that toric degenerations of Borovik, Sturmfels and Sverrisdóttir are still available in the general settings. We also derive a description of the graph closures for flag varieties in terms of quiver representations.
Embedding bumpless pipedreams as Bruhat chains
Schubert polynomials are distinguished representatives of Schubert cycles in the cohomology of the flag variety. In the spirit of Bergeron and Sottile, we use the Bruhat order to give $(n-1)!$ different combinatorial formulas for the Schubert polynomial of a permutation in $S_n$. By work of Lenart and Sottile, one extreme of the formulas recover the classical Pipedream (PD) formula. We prove the other extreme corresponds to Bumpless pipedreams (BPDs). We give two applications of this perspective to view BPDs: Using the Fomin-Kirrilov algebra, we solve the problem of finding a BPD analogue of Fomin and Stanley's algebraic construction on PDs; We also establish a bijection between PDs and BPDs using Lenart's growth diagram, which conjectually agrees with the existing bijection of Gao and Huang.
Singular loci of Schubert varieties and the Lookup Conjecture in type $\tilde A_{2}$
We describe the loci of non-rationally smooth (nrs) points and of singular points for any non-spiral Schubert variety of $\tilde{A}_2$ in terms of the geometry of the (affine) Weyl group action on the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. Together with the results of Graham and Li for spiral elements, this allows us to explicitly identify the maximal singular and nrs points in any Schubert variety of type $\tilde{A}_2$. Comparable results are not known for any other infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody flag variety (except for type $\tilde{A}_1$, where every Schubert variety is rationally smooth). As a consequence, we deduce that if $x$ is a point in a non-spiral Schubert variety $X_w$, then $x$ is nrs in $X_w$ if and only if there are more than $\dim X_w$ curves in $X_w$ through $x$ which are stable under the action of a maximal torus, as is true for Schubert varieties in (finite) type $A$. Combined with the work of Graham and Li for spiral Schubert varieties, this implies the Lookup Conjecture for $\tilde{A}_2$.
Symplectic Grassmannians and Cyclic Quivers
The goal of this paper is to extend the quiver Grassmannian description of certain degenerations of Grassmann varieties to the symplectic case. We introduce a symplectic version of quiver Grassmannians studied in our previous papers and prove a number of results on these projective algebraic varieties. First, we construct a cellular decomposition of the symplectic quiver Grassmannians in question and develop combinatorics needed to compute Euler characteristics and Poincaré polynomials. Second, we show that the number of irreducible components of our varieties coincides with the Euler characteristic of the classical symplectic Grassmannians. Third, we describe the automorphism groups of the underlying symplectic quiver representations and show that the cells are the orbits of this group. Lastly, we provide an embedding into the affine flag varieties for the affine symplectic group.
Spinor-Helicity Varieties
The spinor-helicity formalism in particle physics gives rise to natural subvarieties in the product of two Grassmannians. These include two-step flag varieties for subspaces of complementary dimension. Taking Hadamard products leads to Mandelstam varieties. We study these varieties through the lens of combinatorics and commutative algebra, and we explore their tropicalization, positive geometry, and scattering correspondence.
$B_{n-1}$-orbits on the flag variety and the Bruhat graph of the symmetric group
Let $G=G_{n}=GL(n)$ be the $n\times n$ complex general linear group and embed $G_{n-1}=GL(n-1)$ in the top left hand corner of $G$. The standard Borel subgroup of upper triangular matrices $B_{n-1}$ of $G_{n-1}$ acts on the flag variety of $G$ with finitely many orbits. In this paper, we show that each $B_{n-1}$-orbit is the intersection of orbits of two Borel subgroups of $G$ acting on the flag variety of $G$. This allows us to give a new combinatorial description of the $B_{n-1}$-orbits by associating to each orbit a pair of Weyl group elements. The closure relations for the $B_{n-1}$-orbits can then be understood in terms of the Bruhat order on the Weyl group, and the Richardson-Springer monoid action on the orbits can be understood in terms of the classical monoid action of the Weyl group on itself. This approach makes the closure relation more transparent than in earlier work of Magyar and the monoid action significantly more computable than in our earlier papers, and also allows us to obtain new information about the orbits including a simple formula for the dimension of an orbit.
Orbit structures and complexity in Schubert and Richardson Varieties
The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we provide a type-uniform formula for the torus complexity of the usual torus action on a Richardson variety, by developing the notion of algebraic dimensions of Bruhat intervals, strengthening a type $A$ result by Donten-Bury, Escobar and Portakal. In the process, we give an explicit description of the torus action on any Deodhar component as well as describe the root subgroups that comprise the component. Secondly, when a Levi subgroup in a reductive algebraic group acts on a Schubert variety, we exhibit a codimension preserving bijection between the Levi-Borel subgroup (a Borel subgroup in the Levi subgroup) orbits in the big open cell of that Schubert variety and torus orbits in the big open cell of a distinguished Schubert subvariety. This bijection has many applications including a type-uniform formula for the Levi-Borel complexity of the usual Levi-Borel subgroup action on a Schubert variety. We conclude by extending the Levi-Borel complexity results to a large class of Schubert varieties in the partial flag variety.
Regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties
Let $G$ be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group. Fix a subset $Θ$ of simple roots. Given a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots, one can define the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ in the full flag variety $G/B$. For a $Θ$-ideal $I$ (which is a special lower ideal), we can define the regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in the partial flag variety $G/P$. In this manuscript we first provide a summand formula and a product formula for the Poincaré polynomial of regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. It is a well-known result from Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand that the cohomology ring of the partial flag variety $G/P$ is isomorphic to the invariants in the cohomology ring of the full flag variety $G/B$ under an action of the parabolic Weyl group $W_Θ$ generated by $Θ$. We generalize this result to regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. More concretely, we give an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ and the $W_Θ$-invariant subring of the cohomology ring of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$. Furthermore, we provide a description of the cohomology ring for a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in terms of the $W_Θ$-invariants in the logarithmic derivation module of the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, which is a generalization of the result by Abe-Masuda-Murai-Sato with the author.

Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the cohomology of the complete flag variety and have a combinatorial formulation in terms of bumpless pipe dreams. Quantum double Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of the complete flag variety, but no analogous combinatorial formulation had been discovered. We introduce a generalization of the bumpless pipe dreams called quantum bumpless pipe dreams, giving a novel combinatorial formula for quantum double Schubert polynomials as a sum of binomial weights of quantum bumpless pipe dreams. We give a bijective proof for this formula by showing that the sum of binomial weights satisfies a defining transition equation.
Poset polytopes and pipe dreams: toric degenerations and beyond
We demonstrate how pipe dreams can be applied to the theory of poset polytopes to produce toric degenerations of flag varieties. Specifically, we present such constructions for marked chain-order polytopes of Dynkin types A and C. These toric degenerations also give rise to further algebraic and geometric objects such as PBW-monomial bases and Newton--Okounkov bodies. We discuss a construction of the former in the type A case and of the latter in type C.

Schubert polynomials represent a basis for the cohomology of the complete flag variety and thus play a central role in geometry and combinatorics. In this context, Schubert polynomials are generating functions over various combinatorial objects, such as rc-graphs or reduced pipe dreams. By restricting Bergeron and Billey's chute moves on rc-graphs, we define a Demazure crystal structure on the monomials of a Schubert polynomial. As a consequence, we provide a method for decomposing Schubert polynomials as sums of key polynomials, complementing related work of Assaf and Schilling via reduced factorizations with cutoff, as well as Lenart's coplactic operators on biwords.
Enumerating Permutations Avoiding Split Patterns 3|12 and 23|1
In this paper, we give a formula for the number of permutations that avoid the split patterns $3|12$ and $23|1$ with respect to a position $r$. Such permutations count the number of Schubert varieties for which the projection map from the flag variety to a Grassmannian induces a fiber bundle structure. We also study the corresponding bivariate generating function and show how it is related to modified Bessel functions.
Poset polytopes and pipe dreams: types C and B
The first part of this paper concerns type C. We present new explicitly defined families of algebro-combinatorial structures of three kinds: combinatorial bases in representations, Newton--Okounkov bodies of flag varieties and toric degenerations of flag varieties. All three families are parametrized by the same family of polytopes: the marked chain-order polytopes of Fang and Fourier which interpolate between the type C Gelfand--Tsetlin and FFLV polytopes. Thus, in each case the obtained structures interpolate between the well-known bases, Newton--Okounkov bodies or degenerations associated with the latter two polytopes. We then obtain similar results for type B after introducing a new family of poset polytopes to be considered in place of marked chain-order polytopes. In both types our constructions and proofs rely crucially on a combinatorial connection between poset polytopes and pipe dreams.
Acyclic matchings on Bruhat intervals and applications to total positivity
The existence of acyclic complete matchings on the face poset of a regular CW complex implies that the underlying topological space of the CW complex is contractible by discrete Morse theory.
In this paper, we construct explicitly acyclic complete matchings on any non-trivial Bruhat interval $[v,w]$ based on any reflection order on the Coxeter group $W$. We then apply this combinatorial result to regular CW complexes arising from the theory of total positivity.
As an application, we show that the totally nonnegative Springer fibers are contractible. This verifies a conjecture of Lusztig. As another application, we show that the totally nonnegative fibers of the natural projection from full flag varieties to partial flag varieties are contractible. This leads to a much simplified proof of the regularity property on totally nonnegative partial flag varieties compared to the proofs by Galashin-Karp-Lam and in our earlier work.
A Plücker coordinate mirror for partial flag varieties and quantum Schubert calculus
We construct a Plücker coordinate superpotential $\mathcal{F}_-$ that is mirror to a partial flag variety $\mathbb{ F}\ell(n_\bullet)$. Its Jacobi ring recovers the small quantum cohomology of $\mathbb{ F}\ell(n_\bullet)$ and we prove a folklore conjecture in mirror symmetry. Namely, we show that the eigenvalues for the action of the first Chern class $c_1(\mathbb{ F}\ell(n_\bullet))$ on quantum cohomology are equal to the critical values of $\mathcal{F}_-$. We achieve this by proving new identities in quantum Schubert calculus that are inspired by our formula for $\mathcal{F}_-$ and the mirror symmetry conjecture.
