The Coxeter Flag Variety
For a Coxeter element $c$ in a Weyl group $W$, we define the $c$-Coxeter flag variety $\operatorname{CFl}_c\subset G/B$ as the union of left-translated Richardson varieties $w^{-1}X^{wc}_w$. This is a complex of toric varieties whose geometry is governed by the lattice $\operatorname{NC}(W,c)$ of $c$-noncrossing partitions. We show that $\operatorname{CFl}_c$ is the common vanishing locus of the generalized Plücker coordinates indexed by $W\setminus\operatorname{NC}(W,c)$. We also construct an explicit affine paving of $\operatorname{CFl}_c$ and identify the $T$-weights of each cell in terms of $c$-clusters. This paving gives a GKM description of $H^\bullet(\operatorname{CFl}_c)$ and $H^\bullet_{T_{ad}}(\operatorname{CFl}_c)$ in terms of the induced Cayley subgraph on $\operatorname{NC}(W,c)$, and we show these rings are naturally isomorphic for different choices of $c$. In type $\mathrm{A}$, this recovers the quasisymmetric flag variety for a special $c$, and for general $c$ we show the cohomology ring has a presentation as permuted quasisymmetric coinvariants.

Real gamma distribution on analytic bundles of flag varieties
This paper introduces four matrix normal distributions extending the separable covariance $ \varPhi \otimes \varPsi$ with potentially variable-level ($ \varPsi$) and/or sample-level ($ \varPhi$) correlations. The joint distribution of sample variances and covariances, leading to the product-moment distribution, is considered when precision matrices admit a specific tensor form. Several well-known results, including the non-central Wishart distribution and normal quadratic forms, now appear as corollaries. Moreover, we propose a conjecture concerning the analytic continuation of the real gamma distribution. By applying these results to the flag varieties, we classify the double flag and the single flag.

The Grothendieck Group of the Variety of Spanning Line Configurations
We study the Grothendieck group of the variety $X_{n,k}$ of spanning line configurations introduced by Pawlowski--Rhoades [arXiv:1711.08301] as a geometric model for the generalized coinvariant algebra $R_{n,k}$. Our first result is a localization statement in $K$-theory for the complements of cell closures in smooth cellular varieties. Combining with the Fulton--Lascoux degeneracy loci formula, we prove that $K_0(X_{n,k})$ is canonically isomorphic to $R_{n,k}$, extending classical isomorphisms for the flag variety. We next identify the classes of the Pawlowski--Rhoades varieties with Grothendieck polynomials associated to words $w \in [k]^n$. Motivated by this identification, we develop models of classical and bumpless pipe dreams for words. We show that Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of words are monomial-weight generating functions for these pipe dreams, extending the classical story from permutations to words and ordered set partitions.

On subdivisions of the permutahedron and flags of lattice path matroids
In this manuscript we study the subdivisions of the permutahedron $Π_n$ into two subpolytopes corresponding to flags of positroids, which are in particular flags of lattice path matroids (LPFMs). A subpolytope $P_{[u,v]}$ of $Π_n$ is a Bruhat Interval Polytope (BIP) if $P_{[u,v]}$ is the convex hull of all the permutations (viewed as points in $\RR^n$) in the interval $[u,v]$ in the Bruhat order of $§_n$. We show that the coarsest subdivisions we obtain into LPFMs are the only subdivisions of $Π_n$ via hyperplane splits, into subpolytopes corresponding to BIPs. More specifically, we describe the hyperplanes whose intersection with $Π_n$ give rise to BIPs. Hence, these subdivisions are polytopes coming from points in the complete nonnegative flag variety.

Brion atoms for classical types
Let $G$ be a classical group defined over the complex numbers with a Borel subgroup $B$. Choose a holomorphic involution of $G$ and let $K$ be its set of fixed points. The group $K$ acts on the flag variety $G/B$ with finitely many orbits and Brion has derived a general formula for the cohomology classes of the corresponding orbit closures as linear combinations of Schubert classes. This article provide a uniform description of the sets of Weyl group elements (which we refer to as Brion atoms) indexing the terms in this formula. This builds on prior work addressing types A, B, and C. The main novelty of our results is a thorough treatment of type D. As one application, we introduce a notion of involution Schubert polynomials for all classical types and present several conjectures related to these objects.

Bumpless Pipe Dream Fragments -- Equivariant Geometry of Clans
In this paper, we establish a new geometric setting for bumpless pipe dreams and double Schubert polynomials. Building on the notion of bumpless pipe dream fragments, we define clan polynomials as their weight generating functions. It turns out that clan polynomials arise naturally in the equivariant geometry of ($GL_p\times GL_q$)-orbits over the flag variety $Fl_{p+q}$ parametrized by $(p,q)$-clans. Furthermore, we show that the coefficients in the equivariant Schubert expansion of the fundamental classes of ($GL_p\times GL_q$)-orbit closures are exactly clan polynomials, which resolves an open problem posed by Wyser and Yong.
Structure and geometry of the tableaux algebra
We study the monoid algebra ${}_{n}\mathcal{T}_{m}$ of semistandard Young tableaux, which coincides with the Gelfand--Tsetlin semigroup ring $\mathcal{GT}_{n}$ when $m = n$. Among others, we show that this algebra is commutative, Noetherian, reduced, Koszul, and Cohen--Macaulay. We provide a complete classification of its maximal ideals and compute the topology of its maximal spectrum. Furthermore, we classify its irreducible modules and provide a faithful semisimple representation. We also establish that its associated variety coincides with a toric degeneration of certain partial flag varieties constructed by Gonciulea--Lakshmibai. As an application, we show that this algebra yields injective embeddings of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-crystals, extending a result of Bossinger--Torres.

Markov chains on Weyl groups from the geometry of the flag variety
This paper studies a basic Markov chain, the Burnside process, on the space of flags $G/B$ with $G = GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $B$ its upper triangular matrices. This gives rise to a shuffling: a Markov chain on the symmetric group realized via the Bruhat decomposition. Actually running and describing this Markov chain requires understanding Springer fibers and the Steinberg variety. The main results give a practical algorithm for all n and q and determine the limiting behavior of the chain when q is large. In describing this behavior, we find interesting connections to the combinatorics of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence and to the geometry of orbital varieties. The construction and description is then carried over to finite Chevalley groups of arbitrary type, describing a new class of Markov chains on Weyl groups.

Motivic Classes of Isotropic Degeneracy Loci and Symmetric Orbit Closures
We provide explicit formulas for computing the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of degeneracy loci, especially those coming from the symplectic and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. The Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes, K-theory classes, and Cappell--Shaneson L-classes arise as specializations of the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes. Our result is the analogue of the result of Anderson--Chen--Tarasca for the degeneracy loci from the ordinary Grassmannians. As applications, we obtain the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of orthogonal and symplectic orbit closures in flag varieties.

Totally positive Toeplitz matrices: classical and modern
By a theorem of Edrei, an infinite, normalised totally nonnegative upper-triangular Toeplitz matrix is determined by a pair of nonnegative parameter sequences, the `Schoenberg parameters', where nonzero parameters correspond to the roots and poles of a naturally associated generating function. These totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices and their parameters also arise in the classification of characters of the infinite symmetric group by later work of Thoma. Moreover the Schoenberg parameters have an asymptotic interpretation in terms of irreducible representations of S_n and their Young diagrams by Vershik-Kerov. In this article we consider infinite totally positive Toeplitz matrices as limits of finite ones, and we obtain two further asymptotic descriptions of the Schoenberg parameters that are now related to quantum cohomology of the flag variety as n goes to infinity. One is related to asymptotics of normalised quantum parameters, and the other to asymptotics of the Chern classes of the tautological line bundles. We also describe the asymptotics of (quantum) Schubert classes in terms of the Schoenberg parameters. Our limit formulas relate to and were motivated by a tropical analogue of this theory that we survey. In the tropical setting one finds an asymptotic relationship between the `tropical Schoenberg parameters' and the weight map from Lusztig's parametrisation of the canonical basis.

Special restricted partition functions for the stable sheaf cohomology on flag varieties
Let $\mathbf a:=(a_1,\ldots,a_r)$ be a sequence of positive integers, $d\geq 2$ and $j\geq 1$, some integers. We study the functions $p_{\mathbf a,d}(n):=$ the number of integer solutions $(x_1,\dots,x_r)$ of $\sum_{i=1}^r a_ix_i=n$, with $x_i\geq 0$ and $x_i \equiv 0,1(\bmod\;d)$, for all $1\leq i\leq r$, and $p_{\mathbf a,d}(n;j):=$ the number of $(x_1,\ldots,x_r)$ as above which satisfy also the condition $\sum_{i=1}^r \left(x_i-(d-2)\left\lfloor \frac{x_i}{d} \right\rfloor\right) =j$. We give formulas for $p_{\mathbf a,d}(n)$ and its polynomial part $P_{\mathbf a,d}(n)$, and also for $p_{\mathbf a,d}(n;j)$. As an application, we compute the dimensions of the stable cohomology groups for certain line bundles associated to flag varieties, defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic.

Global positroid varieties
Positroid subvarieties of complex Grassmannians are the images of the Richardson subvarieties of the full flag varieties under the natural projection map. Positroid varieties admit natural embedding into certain quiver Grassmannians for equioriented cyclic quivers. Varying representations of the quiver, one defines global positroid varieties inside the type A global affine Grassmannian. General fiber of a family is isomorphic to the corresponding classical positroid variety and the special fiber is a subvariety of the juggling variety. We show that the global positroid families are flat and describe their (conjecturally reduced) scheme structures. We also describe the special fibers inside the product of classical positroid varieties and realize the irreducible components of the special fibers in terms of the affine Richardson varieties.

On Vanishing of Gromov--Witten Invariants
We consider the decision problem of whether a particular Gromov--Witten invariant on a partial flag variety is zero. We prove that for the $3$-pointed, genus zero invariants, this problem is in the complexity class ${\sf AM}$ assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), and therefore lies in the second level of polynomial hierarchy ${\sf PH}$. For the proof, we construct an explicit system of polynomial equations through a translation of the defining equations. We also need to prove an extension of the Parametric Hilbert's Nullstellensatz to obtain our central reduction.
Notes on the cohomology of partial Hessenberg varieties
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of full flag varieties. This family contains well-known varieties such as Springer fibers, Peterson varieties, and permutohedral varieties. It was introduced by De Mari-Procesi-Shayman in 1992 and has been actively studied in this decade. In particular, unexpected relations to hyperplane arrangements and the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in graph theory have been discovered. Hessenberg varieties can be defined in partial flag varieties. In this paper, we study their cohomology by relating them to the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties in the full flag varieties.

Introduction to the Cohomology of the Flag Variety
One hundred years ago, Hilbert gave a list of important open problems in mathematics. His 15th problem asked for the development of a rigorous calculus explaining Schubert's enumerative results for intersecting varieties defined by rank conditions on vector spaces. Today by way of many contributions in algebraic topology, geometry, and combinatorics, we consider this solved. Yet, deep questions remain about the subtleties of actually carrying out the process. In this chapter, we hope to summarize the rigorous development of what has become known as Schubert calculus, with an eye toward computation. We discuss Grassmannians and flag varieties and their cohomology rings, following Monk's constructive algebraic approach. We derive formulas for Schur and Schubert polynomials, which represent cohomology classes of Schubert varieties. We hint at the vast literature in this area and point to the other references in the Handbook for more information. Finally, we identify open problems that remain a challenge even with modern tools at our fingertips in hopes of inspiring further contributions in this fascinating field. This is intended as the first chapter of a book entitled "Handbook of Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry: Subvarieties of the Flag Variety", a compendium of topics in the area. The book is being edited by Erik Insko, Martha Precup, and Ed Richmond. In addition to this introductory chapter, others will cover more advanced topics such as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, generalized smooth Schubert varieties, Richardson varieties and positroid varieties, spherical and torus orbit closures, spanning line configurations, different types of Hessenberg varieties, and generalizations to Kac-Moody flag varieties, each written by experts in those areas. We hope you enjoy this chapter enough to seek out the others, and that you send us any comments or corrections you find as you read this article!

Chern Classes of Toric Variety Bundles
In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Khovanskii--Monin on the Chern classes of toric variety bundles. The main result is a formula for the total Chern class of the tangent bundle of a toric variety bundle in terms of the total Chern class of the base and the total Chern class of the toric fibre. The result serves as a simultaneous generalization of the description of the total Chern class of a projectivized vector bundle and of the formula for the total Chern class of a toric variety in terms of the Chern classes of the toric divisors. We also establish a topological version of this statement for stably complex quasitoric manifolds. As an immediate application, we obtain a formula for the total Chern class of a toroidal horospherical variety in terms of the Chern classes of the generalized flag variety and the total Chern class of the toric fibre, as well as a new proof of Masuda's formula for equivariant Chern classes. This paper is written with a view towards finding polytopal models for various numeric invariants of spherical varieties.

Upper cluster structure on Kac--Moody Richardson varieties
We show coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. We further show the coordinate rings of (generalized) open Richardson varieties on the twisted product of flag varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. This includes, as special cases, reduced double Bruhat cells, Bott-Samelson varieties, braid varieties. Our results generalize various results by Casals--Gorsky--Gorsky--Le--Shen--Simental and Galashin--Lam--Sherman-Bennett--Speyer in finite types.

Changing Bases with Pipe Dream Combinatorics
Lascoux and Schützenberger introduced Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials to study the cohomology and K-theory of the complete flag variety. We present explicit combinatorial rules for expressing Grothendieck polynomials in the basis of Schubert polynomials, and vice versa, using the bumpless pipe dreams (BPDs) of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. A key advantage of BPDs is that they are naturally back stable, which allows us to give a combinatorial formula for expanding back stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of back stable Schubert polynomials. We also provide pipe dream interpretations for the rules originally given by Lenart (Grothendieck to Schubert) and Lascoux (Schubert to Grothendieck), which were previously formulated in terms of binary triangular arrays. We give new proofs of these results, relying on Knutson's co-transition recurrences. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for expanding Grothendieck polynomials into Schubert polynomials using chains in Bruhat order. The key connection between the pipe dream and BPD change of basis formulas is the canonical bijection of Gao and Huang. We show that co-permutations are preserved by this map.
Some algebraic properties of ASM varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fulton's matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties that arise in the study of Schubert calculus in the complete flag variety. Weigandt showed that arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties, now called ASM varieties, are indexed by alternating sign matrices (ASMs), objects with a long history in enumerative combinatorics. It is very difficult to assess Cohen-Macaulayness of ASM varieties or to compute their codimension, though these properties are well understood for matrix Schubert varieties due to work of Fulton. In this paper we study these properties of ASM varieties with a focus on the relationship between a pair of ASMs and their direct sum. We also consider ASM pattern avoidance from an algebro-geometric perspective.
Relativistic Toda lattice and equivariant $K$-homology of affine Grassmannian
We investigate the phenomenon known as ``quantum equals affine'' in the setting of $T$-equivariant quantum $K$-theory of the flag variety $G/B$, as established by Kato for any semisimple algebraic group $G$. In particular, we focus on the $K$-Peterson isomorphism between the $T$-equivariant quantum $K$-ring $QK_T(SL_n(\mathbb{C})/B)$ and the $T$-equivariant $K$-homology ring $K_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_{SL_n})$ of the affine Grassmannian, after suitable localizations on both sides. Building on an earlier work by Ikeda, Iwao, and Maeno, we present an explicit algebraic realization of the $K$-Peterson map via a rational substitution that sends the generators of the quantum $K$-theory ring to explicit rational expressions in the fundamental generators of $K_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_{SL_n})$, thereby matching the Schubert bases on both sides. Our approach builds on recent developments in the theory of $QK_T(SL_n(\mathbb{C})/B)$ by Maeno, Naito, and Sagaki, as well as the theory of $K$-theoretic double $k$-Schur functions introduced by Ikeda, Shimozono, and Yamaguchi. This concrete formulation provides new insight into the combinatorial structure of the $K$-Peterson isomorphism in the equivariant setting. As an application, we establish a factorization formula for the $K$-theoretic double $k$-Schur function associated with the maximal $k$-irreducible $k$-bounded partition.
