Let $H\subseteq \mathbb{N}^d$ be a normal affine semigroup, $R=K[H]$ its semigroup ring over the field $K$ and $ω_R$ its canonical module. The Ulrich elements for $H$ are those $h$ in $H$ such that for the multiplication map by $\mathbf{x}^h$ from $R$ into $ω_R$, the cokernel is an Ulrich module. We say that the ring $R$ is almost Gorenstein if Ulrich elements exist in $H$. For the class of slim semigroups that we introduce, we provide an algebraic criterion for testing the Ulrich propery. When $d=2$, all normal affine semigroups are slim. Here we have a simpler combinatorial description of the Ulrich property. We improve this result for testing the elements in $H$ which are closest to zero. In particular, we give a simple arithmetic criterion for when is $(1,1)$ an Ulrich element in $H$.

A simple way of computing the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup (or monoid) with respect to a generator, using Groebner bases, is presented, together with a generalization for affine semigroups. This computation allows us to calculate the type set and, henceforth, to check the Gorenstein condition which characterizes the symmetric numerical subgroups.

We consider a construction by which we obtain a simple graph $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ from a simple graph $H$ and a non-isolated vertex $v$ of $H$. We call this construction "Trung's construction". We prove that $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ is well-covered, W$_2$ or Gorenstein if and only if $H$ is so. Also we present a formula for computing the independence polynomial of $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ and investigate when $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ satisfies the Charney-Davis conjecture. As a consequence of our results, we show that every Gorenstein planar graph with girth at least four, satisfies the Charney-Davis conjecture.

We characterize some graphs with a Gorenstein edge ideal. In particular, we show that if $G$ is a circulant graph with vertex degree at most four or a circulant graph of the form $C_n(1,\ldots, d)$ for some $d\leq n/2$, then $G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G\cong tK_2$, $G\cong t\overline{C_n}$ or $G\cong tC_{13}(1,5)$ for some integers $t$ and $n\geq 4$. Also we prove that if $G$ is a \mathcal{SQC}\ graph, then $G$ is Gorenstein if and only if each component of $G$ is either an edge or a 5-cycle.

The toric variety of a matroid is projectively normal, and therefore it is Cohen-Macaulay. We provide a complete graph-theoretic classification when the toric variety of a graphic matroid is Gorenstein.
Strict log-concavity of the Kirchhoff polynomial and its applications to the strong Lefschetz property
Anari, Gharan, and Vinzant proved (complete) log-concavity of the basis generating functions for all matroids. From the viewpoint of combinatorial Hodge theory, it is natural to ask whether these functions are "strictly" log-concave for simple matroids. In this paper, we show this strictness for simple graphic matroids, that is, we show that Kirchhoff polynomials of simple graphs are strictly log-concave. Our key observation is that the Kirchhoff polynomial {of a complete graph} can be seen as the (irreducible) relative invariant of a certain prehomogeneous vector space, which may be independently interesting in its own right. Furthermore, we prove that for any $a_i\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, $a_1x_1+\cdots+a_nx_n\in R^1_{M}$ satisfies the strong Lefschetz property (moreover, Hodge--Riemann bilinear relation) at degree one of the Artinian Gorenstein algebra $R^*_M$ associated to a graphic matroid $M$, which is defined by Maeno and Numata for all matroids.
Birkhoff polytopes of different type and the orthant-lattice property
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also possess regular, unimodular triangulations. Noting that our triangulation proofs do not rely on the combinatorial structure of $\mathcal{BB}(n)$, we define the notion of an orthant-lattice property polytope and use this to prove more general results for the existence of regular, unimodular triangulations and unimodular covers for a significant family of reflexive polytopes. We conclude by remarking on some connections to Gale-duality, Birkhoff polytopes of other types, and possible applications of orthant-lattice property.

The trace of the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay ring describes its non-Gorenstein locus. We study the trace of the canonical module of a Segre product of algebras, and we apply our results to compute the non-Gorenstein locus of toric rings. We provide several sufficient and necessary conditions for Hibi rings and normal semigroup rings to be Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum.

The combinatorial mutation of polygons, which transforms a given lattice polygon into another one, is an important operation to understand mirror partners for two-dimensional Fano manifolds, and the mutation-equivalent polygons give ${\mathbb Q}$-Gorenstein deformation-equivalent toric varieties. On the other hand, for a dimer model, which is a bipartite graph described on the real two-torus, one can assign a lattice polygon called the perfect matching polygon. It is known that for each lattice polygon $P$ there exists a dimer model having $P$ as the perfect matching polygon and satisfying certain consistency conditions. Moreover, a dimer model has rich information regarding toric geometry associated with the perfect matching polygon. In this paper, we introduce a set of operations which we call deformations of consistent dimer models, and show that the deformations of consistent dimer models realize the combinatorial mutations of the associated perfect matching polygons.

Stanley introduced two classes of lattice polytopes associated to posets, which are called the order polytope ${\mathcal O}_P$ and the chain polytope ${\mathcal C}_P$ of a poset $P$. It is known that, given a poset $P$, the Ehrhart polynomials of ${\mathcal O}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}_P$ are equal to the order polynomial of $P$ that counts the $P$-partitions. In this paper, we introduce the enriched order polytope of a poset $P$ and show that it is a reflexive polytope whose Ehrhart polynomial is equal to that of the enriched chain polytope of $P$ and the left enriched order polynomial of $P$ that counts the left enriched $P$-partitions, by using the theory of Gröbner bases. The toric rings of enriched order polytopes are called enriched Hibi rings. It turns out that enriched Hibi rings are normal, Gorenstein, and Koszul. The above result implies the existence of a bijection between the lattice points in the dilations of ${\mathcal O}^{(e)}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}^{(e)}_P$. Towards such a bijection, we give the facet representations of enriched order and chain polytopes.
The monoid of monotone functions on a poset and quasi-arithmetic multiplicities for uniform matroids
We describe the structure of the monoid of natural-valued monotone functions on an arbitrary poset. For this monoid we provide a presentation, a characterization of prime elements, and a description of its convex hull. We also study the associated monoid ring, proving that it is normal, and thus Cohen-Macaulay. We determine its Cohen-Macaulay type, characterize the Gorenstein property, and provide a Gröbner basis of the defining ideal. Then we apply these results to the monoid of quasi-arithmetic multiplicities on a uniform matroid. Finally we state some conjectures on the number of irreducibles for the monoid of multiplicities on an arbitrary matroid.
Gorenstein $T$-spread Veronese algebras
In this paper we characterize the Gorenstein $t$-spread Veronese algebras.
The eigenvalues of Hessian matrices of the complete and complete bipartite graphs
In this paper, we consider the Hessian matrices $H_Γ$ of the complete and complete bipartite graphs, and the special value of $\tilde H_Γ$ at $x_{i}=1$ for all $x_{i}$. We compute the eigenvalues of $\tilde H_Γ$. We show that one of them is positive and that the others are negative. In other words, the metric with respect to the symmetric matrix $\tilde H_Γ$ is Lorentzian. Hence those Hessian $\det (H_Γ)$ are not identically zero. As an application, we show the strong Lefschetz property for the Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to the graphic matroids of the complete and complete bipartite graphs with at most five vertices.
Quasi-period collapse for duals to Fano polygons: an explanation arising from algebraic geometry
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for rational polygons dual to Fano polygons and describe explicitly the discrepancy between the quasi-period and the denominator.

The main object in this paper is a certain rational convex polytope whose lattice points give a polyhedral realization of a highest weight crystal basis. This is also identical to a Newton-Okounkov body of a flag variety, and it gives a toric degeneration. In this paper, we prove that a specific class of this polytope is given by Kiritchenko's Demazure operators on polytopes. This implies that polytopes in this class are all lattice polytopes. As an application, we give a sufficient condition for the corresponding toric variety to be Gorenstein Fano.

The discrete LS algebra over a totally ordered set is the homogeneous coordinate ring of an irreducible projective (normal) toric variety. We prove that this algebra is the ring of invariants of a finite abelian group containing no pseudo-reflection acting on a polynomial ring. This is used to study the Gorenstein property for LS algebras. Further we show that any LS algebra is Koszul.

We introduce the notion of a $Y$-pattern with coefficients and its geometric counterpart: a cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety with coefficients. We use these constructions to build a flat degeneration of every skew-symmetrizable specially completed cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety $\widehat{\mathcal{X}}$ to the toric variety associated to its $\mathbf{g}$-fan. Moreover, we show that the fibers of this family are stratified in a natural way, with strata the specially completed $\mathcal{X}$-varieties encoded by $\mathrm{Star}(τ)$ for each cone $τ$ of the $\mathbf{g}$-fan. These strata degenerate to the associated toric strata of the central fiber. We further show that the family is cluster dual to $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{prin}}$ of Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich, and the fibers cluster dual to $\mathcal{A}_t$. Finally, we give two applications. First, we use our construction to identify the Rietsch-Williams toric degeneration of Grassmannians with the Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich degeneration in the case of $\mathrm{Gr}_2(\mathbb{C}^5)$. Next, we use it to link cluster duality to Batyrev-Borisov duality of Gorenstein toric Fanos in the context of mirror symmetry.

Lattice polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property (IDP for short) turn up in many fields of mathematics. It is known that if the Cayley sum of lattice polytopes possesses IDP, then so does their Minkowski sum. In this paper, the Cayley sum of the order polytope of a finite poset and the stable set polytope of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the Cayley sum of an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a perfect graph possesses a regular unimodular triangulation and IDP, and hence so does their Minkowski sum. Moreover, it turns out that, for an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a graph, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the Cayley sum is Gorenstein; (ii) the Minkowski sum is Gorenstein; (iii) the graph is perfect.
On 2-representation infinite algebras arising from dimer models

The Jacobian algebra arising from a consistent dimer model is a bimodule $3$-Calabi-Yau algebra, and its center is a $3$-dimensional Gorenstein toric singularity. A perfect matching of a dimer model gives the degree making the Jacobian algebra $\mathbb{Z}$-graded. It is known that if the degree zero part of such an algebra is finite dimensional, then it is a $2$-representation infinite algebra which is a generalization of a representation infinite hereditary algebra. Internal perfect matchings, which correspond to toric exceptional divisors on a crepant resolution of a $3$-dimensional Gorenstein toric singularity, characterize the property that the degree zero part of the Jacobian algebra is finite dimensional. Combining this characterization with the theorems due to Amiot-Iyama-Reiten, we show that the stable category of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules admits a tilting object for any $3$-dimensional Gorenstein toric isolated singularity. We then show that all internal perfect matchings corresponding to the same toric exceptional divisor are transformed into each other using the mutations of perfect matchings, and this induces derived equivalences of $2$-representation infinite algebras.

Since their introduction by Stanley~\cite{StanleyOrderPoly} order polytopes have been intriguing mathematicians as their geometry can be used to examine (algebraic) properties of finite posets. In this paper, we follow this route to examine the levelness property of order polytopes. The levelness property was also introduced by Stanley~\cite{Stanley-CM-complexes} and it generalizes the Gorenstein property. This property has been recently characterized by Miyazaki~\cite{Miyazaki} for the case of order polytopes. We provide an alternative characterization using weighted digraphs. Using this characterization, we give a new infinite family of level posets and show that determining levelness is in $\operatorname{co-NP}$. This family can be used to create infinitely many examples illustrating that the levelness property can not be characterized by the $h^{\ast}$-vector. We then turn to the more general family of alcoved polytopes. We give a characterization for levelness of alcoved polytopes using the Minkowski sum. Then we study several cases when the product of two polytopes is level. In particular, we provide an example where the product of two level polytopes is not level.
